Laggy Gallery - Hero CDMA Themes and Apps

Has anyone had any issue with their gallery not loading pictures or taking an extreme amount of time for just a few to show up at a time?
Mine has been doing this since I've had gallery.

The 3d gallery? That's because it was made for a phone with a snapdragon processor and the right gpu. Our phone is slower, and it doesn't have the graphical hardware to handle it fully.

The 3d gallery is crap... even on the better phones. Use the regular photos app.
That app is a little laggy the first time you run it but is works better after it has loaded all the photos.

Thank you. That answers everything!!

I've noticed the same thing.
For me it will stop loading eventually even the some of the thumbnails are still blank. The ones that it does load, load faster the next time I open the app, there are still a bunch that never load. Are there any gallery replacement apps?

That's weird though, on my current ROM the Gallery doesn't work, however I've used the 3dGallery on other ROMs before and it's worked flawlessly. Its hard to believe that its a hardware thing considering I've used it before with no issues.

Gallery3d has worked fine for me on every ROM from:
DC 2.0.7->2.0.8.1
Fresh 2.11
Fresh 2.12
Fresh Toast 2.1
No issues with lag, no issues with thumbnails not loading.

Default Android Gallery App

I've recently made the switch to a real android phone from my hd2 constantly running fairly smooth android and something I've noticed in both phones, in both different eclair and froyo roms, is that while the default gallery app has a pretty ui it is awful as an actual photo viewer. The hd2 running wm had a great picture viewer with great adaptive zooming so I find it highly disconcerting that a superior os like android could butcher such a vital feature. Just zooming into any photo on my vibrant is a nightmare quite honestly. Even at no zoom pictures look bad and nowhere close to their actual level of detail.
So in short, I was wondering if this was a known issue of the cooliris gallery app and if there are any good photo viewers for android which provide pinch-to-zoom while also not emaciating my precious pictures? I've tried a bunch of android market picture viewer apps but most were even worse or provided no functionality at all.

I think that there is a problem with the rendering of pictures with the gallery, but I can't remember where I found it out...
Try out:
'JustPictures!' and 'Floating Image' from the market.
EDIT - Found out the reason here:

Try Large Image Viewer http://www.appbrain.com/app/image.viewer
I'm using Multi Touch Gallery too - works a treat

Well I tried all the suggested apps but so far l.i.v is my favorite. Its ui is a bit boring and its a bit lacking in features but it's the best at doing what image viewers are supposed to; view images. But thanks for all the suggestions!

[Q] New Picture Gallery app?

I am totally jealous of the photo gallery app on Galaxy S phones. The Droid X gallery is horribly slow and clunky. Could zooming in and out be any worse?
Is there a way to replace it with the Galaxy S app or a 3rd party alternative?
I use Gallery3DMT.apk It's very smooth and works quite well on the X. I believe it's from the nexus. Just be sure to scroll through your pic folders slowly the first time you open it so that it can cache the pics properly for fast loading in the future. Hope this helps.
This app is decent. It's def. the Nexus One app as it ties into my Piccasa account. It's better but still not great. Surprised there aren't better alternatives out there that are faster.
Also ....... wish I could remove the stock Gallery app which blows. Seems if I try to launch the camera from Gallery3DMT.apk it FCs.
I use the WJDgallerymod takes the background pic from the gallery off to load up a tad quicker. other than that it does load quite slow.
here is a link to that, maybe it will help in the slowness. GL
CLICKHERE
It's not even the slowness on that screen that bothers me. The pinch to zoom and scrolling it so pathetic. If a 1st gen iPhone can do it butter smooth, why not a 1ghz Android phone released in 2010?

Not sure there is a good replacement for it, but I agree, the 3D gallery (which is the normal Android gallery BTW) really does suck. Its slow, tries to be overly bling, and can't even show high res images with full detail. As you say, it suffers from bouts of instability too - it force closes on me when I try loads of different wallpapers about one time out of six.

[Q] [ICS] Lag opening Phone app when it is not in memory

Hi guys,
Since the AOSP ICS builds I noticed that when the Phone app is not in memory it opens very slow. The next time you open it is almost instant. I thought that it would be fixed in the OTA, and even if it is a little faster it is still quite frustrating sometimes. Tried many roms/kernels and even if in some configurations it open faster, it is still slow.
Since I dont use the Phone that much, almost every time that I use it it is not in the memory and it is slow. Anyone has an idea to fix it, like a hack to make it persistent in the memory?
Thanks.
Bump. Is there a way to keep it in memory ? Maybe giving it a special permission like the launcher will help. I will take a look...
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
This is my only problem with ICS - I've tried a few memory management programs to see if I could keep the dialer, or contacts, persistent in memory, but nothing works. When I launch the dialer, the application 'Contacts' ('com.android.contacts', which seems to be the new ICS 'People' app) is shown as an 'active application' in my 'SystemPanel' app off the Market, and as long as that stays as an active app then the dialer usually re-launches straight away when pressed the next time, sometimes with only a small bit of lag if the screen has been of for a minute or two. When the 'contacts' app is shut down by the system, I guess when you open other apps up that need memory, the dialer lags again.
All the time, the process 'Phone' ('com.android.phone') seem to be sitting there as an 'Internal System Process' and seems to be persistent, but that alone doesn't make the dialer launch quickly, the 'contacts' app needs to be active as well.
My observations, but I am not a techie.
actually i recently read a thread here on XDA that addressed this issue. it involved a command on the terminal that allowed you to prioritize certain apps. too bad i can't seem to find that thread anymore!
found it! it involves using the Renice command. you can run it as an init.d script
or demo it out using the prioritzer apk (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1224125) kind thanks to this developer for creating the app. it works great!
all i did, was set the phone and contact app to -20 priority. it loads MUCH faster... try it and report back.
here are more links related to renice

Great, thanks for coming back on this, this sounds interesting - I'm not rooted at the moment, I will look into doing this as I think it would be worth it just to sort out this problem, as well as the other benefits. I will report back with my results!
I decided not to root in order to fix this, I've gone a different way with the dialer - exDialer has a polished looking ICS theme and I installed that to see how it would work, and it works great. It opens up consistently quicker, maybe due to the 'Keep in Memory' option that it has. I haven't had one laggy episode with it yet. Most other third party dialers don't look so good but this has a great ICS look, has smart dial, and a great call history function, and it's free (or you can donate as I did). Worth a look for anyone having similar problems.
I would still go back to the stock dialer if it worked properly, maybe a future update will solve this without having to root.
Hi guys,
an old thread, but i would like to now if there is something new about the "bug" that the Phone app opens slow if it is not in memory.
I'm new to the nexus s and running the newest skank Version.
On my Desire S the phone app opens much faster .
Cheers

One thing to keep in mind is that the Desire S has more RAM.
Mine opens up instantly however. Have you rebooted after installing the rom?
I remember on GB it was instant! On ICS it is indeed very slow. Hopefully JB fixes it...

That's funny because mine doesn't even take a second. :silly:
Same here if not in memory, i can easily notice certain lag on ics roms on my phone, when opening certain apps.
Yeah i did.
Hm Sounds like i have to live with it, or does someone have an alternative way to Set the priority for apps. The one mentioned earlier does Not work for me.

Thanks for the suggestion to try exDialer. The phone lag was really irritating me and this did the trick. With ics dark theme, it's a perfect complement to bugles beast. Hopefully this will be fixed in 4.1, but till then ...

Are you getting system-wide, permant lag and have Google+? Look here.

I use auto upload when WiFi+charging, great for our phones with limited storage, So I rely a lot on Google+ auto backup photos. I delete pictures from my local album to free space, but...
When I am browsing my photos through Google+, I CANNOT swipe left or right to go previous/next picture. If I do that, when I leave the app, my phone gets extreme lag, especially in home screen and notification drawer. I even thought this was some CleanRom related bug, but I'm using stock rooted and the problem is still there. I also thought this could be a Sense Launcher bug, but even with Nova launcher it happens.
Anyone else having this issue? I bet there a lot of people experiencing this.. It took me a while to figure out what was causing it, but it's very simple: Just open a photo on Google+ and swipe left or right to go the next/previous pic. Your phone should lag like crazy until you reboot it.

I get the lag too. I usually get it after closing YouTube, I also did the photo swiping you mentioned and was affected as well. Are you using the elementalx or bulletproof kernels?
Using stock rooted rom and kernel. I used to get similar slowdowns on ElementalX kernel, but I could never find the source. In this case I was able to nail it down, and I haven't experienced lag from other apps.

Honestly unless your a huge fan of Google plus I would recommend using drop box (which has the same feature) .
(Especially since it seems like Google plus failed to take off)
+ drop has integration to backup stuff from quite a few apps (fuelio & tibu for example)

I have used dropbox and box extensively before trying Google+ photos. What makes Google+ more attractive to me is that uploads at standard(but still high) resolution are unlimited. It also uploads my videos in HD, also unlimited.
It's not all about storage(I have a 50gb box account). When I actually want to view or download my photos , Google+ is much, much MUCH faster to load. Dropbox and Box are super slow to load, and they also don't sort my pictures by date. Google+ even highlights what it thinks are the best pictures from any given day, enhances them to make them look better and it even creates animations out of my burst shots.
For photo storage, Google+ is so much better, there's just no contest.
