Doesn't this have to do with hacking a program? Isn't that development?

Droid Incredible Themes and Apps

I was under the impression APPS was for sharing apps, talking about apps, getting help with Apps, etc. Whereas, actually opening up an app and making it do **** it doesn't normally do is what I would call Development. Am I wrong? Does development only mean ROOT, ROMS, and RECOVERY? If so, my bad.
Still, it seems like until we get root access, we're all stuck in developmental purgatory. Since, not all our coder/hacker buddies are working on root, i figure they could take a quick look inside the apps package and see how it identifies our phone. I figure -with my limited knowledge- that we may need to change the values under "about phone"/"phone identity"/"model num". Would you say that falls under the umbrella of development?
Furthermore, the purpose behind a policy to organize and classify posts is efficiency. I had posted prior requests in T/A and nothing ever came of it. If my needs are not met in the apps section I have no choice but to post where people talented enough to help me will see it.

You are wrong. This is ANDROID development not all things Android development.

I do not believe the request to have an application working on the droid incredible when it already does any hacking / development since you can install non-market APK's
This looks like a request to pull the APK form the droid which you can already do and install it on another android which can already be done.
So what this has to do with HTC Incredible development I am not sure...

Thanks for the post, I'm sure there's sombody out there who was unaware of the SDK drop.
So.. sorry for the non-developer question here but.... Now that the SDK is out.. does that mean we will start seeing the devs pushing out 2.2 roms or is there something else that will still need to happen for this to work?
I am no dev but my understanding is that this is just the sdk we need to wait until circa June.
Maybe a dev can be more accurate but I am not sure we have a dump of the Rom yet

Not yet. As far as I'm aware, the source code for Froyo has not yet been released to the AOSP git (where we can access the Google-maintained source). Until it is released there, all we can do is play with the SDK and develop Froyo-ready applications.

Devs could try to use SDK images or device dumps to create roms, but this will be "hacking way" until Google will upload Froyo sources.

no, we wont start seeing ROMs for release on here until some 2.2 sourse is given to the AOSP(android open source project) which will hopefully not be too much longer.i give it end of first week in june.
2.1 has been out for how ever long and they still have not released the correct drivers to us users on G1/MT3G.....(video drivers and such)
I hope they do give the Dev what they need, but why should we expect it when what we still lack on 2.1 has not been released?
I am not even close to being a developer and don't really know what Im talking about, but just my thoughts....
so froyo should work better than eclair on our g1/mt3g's?

[TUT] Ubuntu on Evo 4g

First you have to flash this zimage
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=357141&d=1278649181
Do this by rebooting your phone into fastboot
adb reboot-bootloader
then,
fastboot flash zimage zImage
then reboot and follow the instructions on this tutorial and it will work like a charm
http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-hacks/how-to-install-ubuntu-on-htc-evo-4g/
Thank vinny75 for compiling the zimage that makes this work for the evo
and thank the guy who wrote the tutorial for everything else..
thank me for nothing because i didnt do anything lol
EDIT: EVERYBODY JUST FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS ON THIS LINK

Please, wrong section... I am begging you. The Q&A section is two clicks away.
Ubuntu hasn't been ported to the Evo. It is a highly involved process. You can't expect a ROM for the Nexus One to work on the Evo right? There are drivers to port, kernel modifications to be made. Lots of stuff have to happen first.
The website you pointed to mentions that he is working on a port anyhow. Wait for that to come out.

if loop file system is required and loop support isnt compiled into the stock kernel, i haven't checked this, but with the HTC source coded release last week, shouldn't be an issue to compile your own kernel adding in loop support or having a ROM/kernel dev add in loop support.
edit: if i remember right, its a simple option to check under file system in the make kernel config.

Why is it you repeatedly insist on trolling this "wrong section" bull**** on almost all the threads? It's not your job.
Toast will take care of it. bobdude5 isn't a new member and yet you treat him as such? His question obviously belongs in this section and even when you call him out on it... a Mod has already authorized him to post in section? I bet you feel dumb.
It seems to me, you have no idea where most questions belong, it's probably best you keep your mouth shut and let Toast worry about those who are posting in the wrong section -- it's not even that hard for a Mod to move certain questions to a different section.
Add your input, just don't be a troll.

Ok back on topic please.
Also I wanna add its most likely the kernel also. I can compile one for testing tonight if someone doesn't wanna help out and do it first. I think we also need to setup the evo on decordes Linux for HTC devices wiki. I'm at work so searching and linking isn't possible atm. I know he has a section for us there already. We can also gain from the wikis for similar devices there. Anyhow yeah let's not clutter thus thread with trash and let the development begin.
For anyone wanting to see Ubuntu running on the Nexus One and tutorial on how to do it... here's the video.

Now, obviously the directions are for the NEXUS ONE... and most likely won't work for the EVO, however this is good starting point to see what steps can be taken from the video and tweaked to make it work with our EVO's.
Good luck.
I am actually working on this
The problem with it is that the Evo 4G kernel needs to be compiled with support for loop devices. All Nexus One ROMs actually support this but Evo 4G doesn't.
The best way would be to ask those guys making the ROMs to compile the support for loop devices for future versions such as OMJ Roms.
Then could just use the same Nexus One script and would work.
In the meanwhile, I am learning to compile the kernel myself but perhaps you guys can ask the others to include support for loop devices on other ROMs.
Just need to enable CONFIG_DEV_BLK_LOOP=y in the kernel config and rebuild.
Seems to be working now, installing LXDE as I type this.
extract the attached zImage then boot into fastboot and "fastboot boot zImage" to test.
EDIT: VNC works.
Why not something more lightweight than ubuntu?
Ubuntu netbook remix might be nice.....

Root Achieved for Sensation!!! Next step Superuser

Root was achieved today for the evo3d by Teamwin!!!
Dut to great similarities to the 2 devices it is believed that the sensation will be rooted soon using the same vunrability!!!
EDIT: Root achieved today for sensation by using the free3vo exploit
Next step Superuser so that apps needing root will work
I've JUST seen that too!!!
I'm EXTATIC!
NICE! Keeping my fingers crossed! Does teamwin have a Sensation to work with?
Now all we need is a dev who knows what to do
All we need is for teamwin to release the root info.
Sad that some people who dont even work for HTC can crack their code before they release it. Un real. Those guy(s) are amazing. Bravo
If root info is released Im willing to try it out on my sensation. Should be about the same. Save version of hboot so I would bet it just might work with little to no modification

TeamWin didnt break the code. They found an exploit to gain temp root, and from there we can (probably) flash an engineering hboot, thus unlocking the bootloader.

This is a DEVELOPMENT section. Seeing as how you didn't "develop" or " make" this root option, nor is there an actual RELEASE, it doesn't belong here. you're wrong. Refer to the following:
THE DEVELOPMENT SECTION IS FOR DEVELOPMENT ONLY. UNLESS YOUR THREAD IS A RELEASE OR THINKTANK OF SOME SORT, DO NOT POST A THREAD IN THE DEV SECTION.
Accidentally posting in the dev section is not a big deal, but repeat offenders WILL be issued an infraction if they continue to post after the rules have been made known to them.

[Q] 2.3.3 to 2.2?

I'm a bit confused. I've been reading online for a while, and don't fully understand the ROMs available and what not. (I am a computer programmer, so I'm fairly tech savvy).
Basically, my evo shift has 2.3.3. I did a factory reset hoping it would back down to 2.2, but it did not. Now, I'd like to install 2.2 so I can root my phone. Is there a way I can do this? I've also seen a few roms (ie: evervolv) that are rooted. How can I install these (i'm using a mac).
Also, what do you guys recommend? Should I install a ROM, downgrade to 2.2 (how?) and root, etc?
Thanks!
You cannot downgrade to Froyo.. Sorry. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218580

You can only temp root right now with 2.3 on the Shift. A factory reset just wipes everything and basically gives you a clean OS...it's like getting a new phone. The good folks at HTC should be releasing the the source code and kernel between now and EOL of the phone.

When ppl aren't sure what they are reading they have to ask. It may seem stupid to ppl who aren't new but to someone new, I can see it happening, especially if they don't want to brick their phone!
just my 1.5 cents worth
Yeah, I've read lots. I posted because it's good to have clarification.
I've read that you cannot "downgrade" to 2.2 from 2.3, but that doesn't necessarily answer my question if I can flash a 2.2 ROM..
I know 2.3.3 isn't rooted yet, but that doesn't necessarily mean I can't flash a ROM with an older, rooted version (very common in modchips for gaming systems.. If the company releases an update, you can usually re-flash the chip to the old update and be good to go).
So, it seems that if my phone is 2.3, my *ONLY* option is to temp root, is that correct (impossible to reflash, reprogram, etc)?

You need root and recovery (or the old hboot) in order to flash anything. So yes, until a new root method is found your only option is to temp root.
