what would be the benefits in doing this? I already have apps2sd. The settings i'm referring to are in the "other" folder of the recovery menu

There are a whole lot and by whole lot I mean at least twenty threads on this same post. Just in development. And by at least I mean there are probably more than that.
P.S I got a class 6, 4gb microsd card from compusa for six bucks a couple months ago.

No.
Unless you have a hand so steady that your room for error is down to the nanometer.

you can move all the bloatware on the phone to an sdcard if you have a big sdcard and your rooted so it clears up memory but to expand it i would say no

I don't know why you'd need that level of precision. I do surface mount soldering by hand all the time, and BGA re-work with hot air or IR at work. It's no longer exclusively the stuff of billion dollar companies. The act of desoldering a chip and soldering another one in its place would probably be the easy part.
Why do you need more internal storage Rockerboy? Get an SDcard.
I do got an sd card 16gb but some appz cant go on sd card nd my internal memory is running out.

...We have over 500MB of internal storage for Apps, how much crap do you have installed? move some stuff that can be moved over to your sdcard there.
Yea

That isn't enough for me and I alrdy moved everything that could be moved.

To do this you need two things.
1) A SOLDERING STATION, not just a soldering iron
2) god-like steady hands. <--- Might as well be a Marine Sniper
As far as I am concerned the memory controller (ala Northbridge.) should be able to recognize and compensate for a increase in memory as if it were a regular ram upgrade on a PC. As long as we aren't talking hundreds of gigs increase it should work fine, no?
This is not feasible for you to do on your own. If you have to ask, you can't do it. WTF do you have installed that takes up 500MB that can't be moved? there's only a handful of apps that can't be moved.
Wow, 500MB full? That seems unlikely if you've moved every app you can to your SD card and cleared your caches.
I haven't tried it on the Sidekick, but if you're running a custom ROM have you looked at using CustomMTD? That would free up some space (I use it on my G1)
CustomMTD is designed for HTC phones that use the MTD filesystem, rather than the RFS or EXT4 partitions used by our phones. That said, with some hacking/modding it would be possible to get something similar working on our phones, but I'm not the person to work on such a project.
So after doing some the mods from RomTools... all of the sudden my SD card is write protected??
Can can see files but can not add or delete. I've taken it out....try to fix from Win 7...still write protected...then I tried to format from comp.. no go...then I tried right in the phone...nope.
Tried fixing permissions multiple times and it's the same.
Any ideas or suggestions?

look on the card itself most full sized sd cards have a switch of sorts to write protect them on the physical card itself. ive never seen one on a micro-sd card but it cant hurt to look.
if thats not the case then something in your SD Card broke. Micro-SD cards should not have any way to write-protect them from a format.
Yeah..no switch on the micro
I don't even see how it got write protected

then your card is most likely shot. if its fairly new (and you dont mind wasting time) try calling up the manufacturer and requesting a replacement.
Ah crap
What I feared...it's a older card used between different phones I've had.
I appreciate the help

Does anyone know how to change setting for apps and downloads to go to the sd card and not on the phone?

From what I've seen, it's not an easy task & not even always desirable. Many apps are designed by the Devs to Have to be installed on the internal sd. Since you've searched, you're probably aware of some apps that allow you to move some (but not all) apps to the external sd card.
Have a look at this link;
http://androidforums.com/lg-esteem/497036-internal-external-sd-solution.html
And as for searching, Google is sometimes a better place to search than xda..

Thanks for the info. I normally search google over Things like this but figured someone might have had the same question here on xda.

App does not work since ICS release. Apps must run off internal. There are workarounds but more hassle than they are worth.
Not sure why someone would even need this feature in this day and age. It was only invented to deal with shortage of space before cell phones caught up with the times.

So yes, as the title suggests, I want to move my default app install location to my MicroSD card. I've seen lots of tutorials on how to move the default install place to the internal SD card, but nothing has said how to move them to the MicroSD. Thanks for your help in advance!

Are you sure you saw tutorials showing how to get info on the "internal" sd card? They normally go there. You sure it wasn't "external", that's the same as the micro sd card.

Actual you can. One way is to go to manage apps then select an app. There you will see a move to sdcard option. The easiest way by far though is to use this handy little app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.droidsail.dsapp2sd&hl=en
You can also use it to set the SDcard as the default save location. Some apps won't play nice if installed to SD though. Meaning they take forever to load and there widgets won't work. Why you would need to do this with a phone that has 2gigs of storage is sorta beyond me. The OP must have a metric crap ton of apps. lol

It is indeed moving them to the internal SD. Nice catch. I honestly never bothered to look at it. Just assumed SD was the external. Well you know what they say about assuming. Thanks for the catch.

The best help I can manage is a suggestion to avoid this. There is a good reason it wasn't implemented, more than one. Unless you like your apps to dramatically slow down loading times and disappear on boot, that is.

Yes, I did a bit further research and found a way, but it required making your phone think that the external SD was your internal SD, and I just thought that might be too much. Now that you say that it makes it slower, I'm going to abandon the project entirely. I have enough space on my internal SD to store my apps, and I can live with only storing media on my external. Thanks everyone!

I don't so much have a metric ton of apps, rather a metric ton of spare kernels, nandroids, and rom updates.
