3rd party charger screwing with touch screen? - Desire Accessories

So I've got a bunch of these cheap ebay USB chargers. I was using them with my HTC Kaiser but now I have my desire - When the phone is on charge using one of these, the touch screen won't work properly. It goes crazy, registering its own "touches" so menus fly about, etc. and if I try touching it, it either doesn't register it, registers the touch about 10 times or in the wrong place!
As soon as I unplug, back to normal!
The HTC charger says output: DC 5v, 1amp
This charger says output: DC 5v+- 0.20v, DC500mA +- 30mA
Does this mean these chargers arent quite powerful enough or something? Could I be damaging my phone by using these? They do charge ok but seem to take longer than the HTC charger.

I had exactly the same problem with the G1 and after a fair amount of time researching that issue, I read, and was told that the voltage on many 3rd party charger are not as well regulated as on HTC charger's or pc's USB ports.
On my G1 the problem stayed even after unplugging the charger.
You'd be much better off with a genuine HTC charger or just using your pc's USB ports.

I have the same problem with my phone .. the problem still remained after unpluging and using my own charger.
Does it go away in some time? is your phone ok now?

Well, on my Dream, the problem wasn't constant, but it was there very often, it seem to occur less when I was swapping with some spare charged batteries.
On my Dream the trick was to turn the screen on and off, and it would work most of the time...
I suggest you try to charge of your computer, the voltage output is regulated properly and I was told several times that the opposite, i.e. cheap chargers, were messing with capacitance screens.
I have been charging my Desire with the HTC charger and my PC and haven't had any issues yet.
Better safe than sorry, I wouldn't have got an upgrade if my Dream didn't have that problem in the first place, and it quickly becomes a massive pain! Especially when you have no keyboard.

Problem didn't go away, so I sent my phone to the waranty service.
Using the original charger and original usb cable everything was ok, the problem appeared when I used an usb extender with my computer. First, windows didn't recognize my device, and then the touchscreen problem appeared.

I had the same problem with charger and usb extender but the problem doesn't stay when I take it out. I Won't be using it again that's for sure...thanks for the heads up

i was having screen freezes and stuff with my HD2 HTC desire rom using a 3rd party charger
my guess is , STAY AWAY

I have a JMB branded car charger ([email protected]) with a mini USB connector, but with a Force branded mini USB to micro USB converter. I have no issues whatsoever.

I use a Samsung Micro USB charger and I notice no problems whatsoever, it's like an older version of the charger that comes with the Galaxy S in Europe.
Straight from the plug as it were, it's great, no issues and charges extra fast

[Q] Broken Micro USB Port

Okay so my usb port has been a bit annoying the past week - where i had to vigorously wiggle the cable to get it to charge or to sync (and even when it did decide to connect to the computer, it would chop out eventually)
But now it's no longer charging or being recognized by my comp
It's strange because the headphone adapter was working fine, and so was the usb host, but it just wont charge anymore - I effectively now have a dead TG01
Currently, i'll get the orange light, telling me it's charging, but when i try to power on, nothing happens...
So i'm thinking a new USB port which is where I need some help: I'm not sure on what part to get
But maybe This is the one? Comparing the images with the ones found on the net of the TG01 (Yep - I still haven't got mine open yet)
But yeah, just a heads up on whether you think it would work would be epic, or whether you think i should just try a different battery/charger/throw it away (Although i'm almost certain it's the port, as it was working intermitently before - it's now gone altogether)

Wall charger, but i tried USB, and still no luck
It just wont charge at all, regardless of the orange light when plugged in now that it's off (though i wouldn't get it when the phone did still have charge left and was therefore still switched on...)
BUMP: Any ideas you clever people? Just some guidance would be nice...
I'm still without my beloved TG01, I'm having to use a **** old Samsung G600
I do have some problems of my own with my USB cable. I believe the problems are due to the cable, though. The wall charger works fine. The USB cable that I use, has to stay somehow "forced"... imagine having the cell laying face up on a desk. The USB cable gets out and is forced by a small pen that stays right near the cellphone, to have a 30% slope upwards, so pushing a bit the cable onto the upper part of the USB port. I do know that you are telling us a different issue, however, maybe this way you could check whether it's just a broken connection and not a completely dead port.
No, this sounds like the exact issue i had...
It was like this with the Charger and USB - where i had to force it to be recognised or charged, and it would still cut out after a while - and wiggling it or knocking it wouldn't actually affect it, it would be of it's own accordance...
But it was strange because the headphone adapter worked fine...
Nothing happens at all now though
Are you try: Settings- Connections- USB to PC- unmark Enable advanced network functionality
I can't turn the phone on because it wont charge, so it's not that
Battery may be defective. Try with any 5V charger, connect directly to battery pin in 10 min
Hi
It vaguely remembers me of something I read on the forum about different micro usb (explaining my different cables do not connect just the same, some easy, some bit forced); I think there also was a drawing. (but I don't have time to search for the exact thread; it was not the "solving usb port mistery one))
Maybe your earphone adaptator don't have exactly the same as your charger? And if it is not battery trouble, find a charger with the "very right" micro usb plug?
Thank you both so much for your response:
I understand why you say it could be the battery problem with the charger - but it doesn't explain the intermittent connection with my computer when using the USB cable. Which is convincing myslef more and more that it's a port problem
One solution for now would be to buy one of these cheap external battery chargers from eBay, but it would mean i still wouldn't be able to use sync using the USB cable and i'm a bit conscious on whether the charger is safe and wont fry my battery
Which is why i'm leaning towards having a stab at reparing it myself
It'd solve the issue directly and it'd be a safer and more secure solution too... (the external charger would have to be ordered in from Hong Kong eBay)
I'm having what seem to be exactly the same problems. I have used 2 x usb based chargers on it - and neither work (whereas they had been working for the past 6 months). Got a mains charger last week - was working for a while - but as of right now, no longer works.
I'm not sure what else to do. I will try later to use the other adapter I have for connection to usb keyboard. The strange thing is - this will probably work but charging won't!
So....is it the micro usb port that's broken? (strange if it is but still works for data)
OR
could it be the battery?

Charger Outputs

I know some people use chargers other than the stock HTC charger...
does using a different charger with lower or higher milliamp ratings make a difference or hurt the battery in any way?
Dont know anything about damage, wouldnt think so.
In my experience, my HTC desire has two modes of charging USB (500mA) or AC (1A).
If the two middle pins of the usb cable are shorted it assumes its connected to an ac charger so it pulls 1A. This is due to the max rating of a pc usb connection being 500mA, so everytime it thinks its connected to a pc it wont draw too much and damage your pc motherboard etc.
Now coming back to your question, some chargers have their pins shorted, some not. Apart from longer charging times, the only real issue is for car chargers, where some poeple have found that if you use one that sets the phone to USB mode, and you are running lots of thing like nav software etc, the battery will still drain even with the charger connected. ie its using more juice than its taking.
Personally I have charged my desire with many USB devices, like ipod chargers, etc etc with no ill effect. I found out thtat my ipod WONT charge from the HTC charger, whereas my phone would happily charge from the apple charger. Prob due to some usual Apple rubbish about who gets the accessory money, so for travelling I just take the Apple charger now.

Both my kid's iPod 3G charge from their Htc chargers just fine so I'm not sure why yours wont. I bought a dock last week for the phone and when I plugged it in I got the screen problem that a lot of others have had where it doesn't respond much. It was like this for a while after too. The charger was some cheap **** 800mA that came with it but I doubt it was just down to mA.
> Both my kid's iPod 3G charge from their Htc chargers just fine so I'm not sure why

The Problem is with the generation and Software of the Ipod, older ones charge from
normal wall chargers i.e. HTC just fine, but newer ones are more picky. Notices this
myself with my Ipod Nanos...
you should be able to use anything up to 1.5A just fine with a usb port. Just watch for excessive over heating when the phone is on and charging. When its off and the usual over charge protection in many chargers these days they will stop once the charging has finished. I have a bunch of RC lipo batteries and have never had a problem with anything up to 2A+ for ANY battery i have charged no matter the battery makeup.. over this and you can get quick and significant problems...

that doesn't mean the device is not capable... you have 2 ends, the charger/usb port and the phone side.. the charger gives 1A, normal USB gives 0.5A, and only HTC knows what the phone side can take.. but at least 1A

Stupid thing stopped charging :(

So, I'm traveling (for a long period of time) with my TF. One day, it stopped charging.
I took apart the power brick and put it back together, I even tried to freeze it (on advice from some older "not charging" threads), nothing helps.
When I connect the TF to my laptop via USB - it recognizes the TF. When I connect my iPod to the power brick (with its own cable obviously) - it charges just fine. So what broke?!
I hate this, the local stores here don't sell the power brick separately and I don't even know if that's the source of the problem.
This sucks
Sounds like the power pin in the TF port has bent/broken or just has some detritus/dirt/foreign matter in it and is stopping it from charging properly. Have a look, but you might need to check the port with lots of light and a magnifying glass, so not easy while you're on the move.
If you are in the US Office Depot sells the charger and USB cable for $30.
strange thing is that sometime my transformer doesn't charge.
i have to reboot and it start to charge again.
Same happened here. Asus tech wanted me to wipe the device. After trying other options to get it to charge, I did but it didn't wipe... Go figure... But it booted up normally and now it has been charging.

Apparently charging has some history of issues on the TF101.
I just had mine act up on me, went around the house trying different wall sockets and checked that it worked fine via USB to PC. Ended up taking a can of dust-off to all the pins, then shoving the plug hard into the TF101 socket. Now it works.
Should have mentioned I have a dock as well, which doesn't charge either (so problem is probably with cable/brick)
I'm trying to get new ones (nowhere to be found here, but I'm trying to get one sent to me). I tried looking for dust/dirt and different wall sockets, no luck.
Weird thing - I left it plugged in to the wall overnight and it grew from 5% to 15%, so looks like some electricity is trickling.
I had the same problem with mine after I had it for 5 weeks, I just RMA'd it and everything is fine.
Im having the same exact problem. I left it charging over night by mistake the night before yesterday. I only let it charge 3 hours the most because I know the Transformers have known issues.
I tried to charge it this morning and nothing. I plug it into my PC. The PC recognized the Transformer but no charging. Turned it on and off, nothing.
Just put the power brick in the freezer, waiting to dry up to see if it works .
Although the tf charger and cable has a usb connector it is not usb compliant. the charger brick looks for a gnd signal on pin 7 of the usb connector ( normally a usb 3.0 data line) to determine it should supply 15V to the positive charge pin vs standard 5V. The slow charge you are seeing is from the 5V supply . check to see if pin7 is seeing the gnd signal. Are you using a usb 2.0 extension cable as it doesn't have have pin 7 conductor. be careful connecting your ipod as it could accidentaly see 15V vs the 5V it is designed for.

HTC Sensation Xe takes FOREVER to recharge!!!

Hey guys basically my problem is that my htc sensation xe takes forever to recharge . I'm using a usb cable extension and a nokia usb cable that is connected to the black plug that htc gave with my phone my phone takes forever to charge!
And also while the phone is on charge and im using the internet the charge goes down!? And sometimes i receive a message saying the htc isn't receiving enough power while its on charge.
I have never used a phone where the battery goes down while using it while the phone is on charge!
Can someone tell me what i should do? Is there any other more powerful chargers i can get!?
Please im desperate if there isn't a solution im going to have to sell this (great) phone.
Thank you
It pays to have the original HTC charger and USB cable if I where you I look into getting both HTC charger and USB cable

If this configuration of the cables worked for you before, and had become faulty now it might indicate a battery problem.
If you're on stock battery it meant it had been used for over a year, probably close to 500 charging cycles. Unfortunately some batteries do not live that long
But just to be sure, try to charge the phone with a different charger (1A 5V) when the phone is turned off - really off, take the battery out, wait a few seconds and put it back inside, than charge.
Wait an hour and turn back on, see if the charge rate is more acceptable.
While the battery is in your hand, feel it and see it has not swollen, no shiny visible cracks and no tiny oily liquid marks. Those are positive signs for a dying battery.
Good luck

I'm guessing it's charging via 'USB' mode and not 'AC' mode. Check the battery menu while charging to confirm. If it is actually charging via 'AC' mode, the mAh must be very low.
I bought a 1000mA charger with the certified 'tick' for Australian standards for $10 off ebay. As I purchased my Sensation from Singapore, which came with an incompatible adapter obviously.
Takes about 1.5hrs to charge. Maybe 2hrs+ while playing 3D games (most intensive)
Not the same one but very similar. Don't worry about it saying it's for the Incredible, as its the same spec charger. This will definitely fix you problem. Did for me... Initially I had the same problem using the supplied HTC USB cord plus an old generic iPhone USB adapter. Which resulted in 'USB' charging mode and very low mAh.

Try with different cable because some cables have resistance (or ferit or both) inside and lower the current given to your phone that make it longer to charge (maybe that nokia cable has this ) See what I mean in attached file (make notice that some cables has this iside the microusb ot usb nozzle ) And try with no so long cable due to resistance of cable(not so big but making a difference ) It is not charger issue I think

[Q] Can't charge off PC USB?

My Photon Q won't charge off a PC USB port, or my laptop. Is this common? Thanks.
Are you using the usb cable that came with the phone? Reason I ask....I've discovered this phone is extremely picky about the cables you use. So far of the ones I have on hand, I can only consistently charge while in the car using my Belkin usb charging adapter with the Motorola cable that came with the phone. That includes a fairly nice ferrite core 6ft usb cable I got from Monoprice...which it works fine at home on AC, but in the car it stutters back and forth between charging and not charging.
Just today I used a cheap USB cable I bought off of ebay to charge my PQ using my laptop.
Its one of the ones sold as "HTC OEM USB Charger + cable" on ebay for like 3 bucks.
I also charge it at home using a green 3m cable from ebay, also bought for like 3 bucks lol.
Does it require that drivers be installed on the PC to get a charge? I've tried a few cables that I have laying around. I'll see if I can find other cables to try. The weird thing is if the phone is off, and plugged in, the LED lights up green, as if it's charging. But using the same cable, if the phone is on, it won't acknowledge that it is plugged in.

No, I wouldn't think so...
I've been able to charge off of many different USB cables on my Q. Not sure... Only thing it's been picky on so far is the wall wart - cable it hasn't seemed too picky about.
If its an old desktop with USB 1.1 it may not charge, and many laptops won't allow charging via USB if the laptop itself is not plugged into AC. Just a thought.

Very good point ^^^. I've heard some laptops, even when plugged in, still don't provide enough juice to charge (some) devices. Perhaps your laptop is one of these low-power USB port devices.
ive noticed that this phone is picky about what charger you use. i have a hard time charging on my pc as well. and certain micro usb's i have dont seem to charge it well either. needs to be the stock plug it came with.
I've basically given up at this point. Blackberry AC chargers work well for me, so I'll try and track down a few more of them. Otherwise, nothing is consistent. The desktop I've used has a plenty big enough power supply, and it charges my Epic with no problem. My personal laptop and work laptop both charged the Epic, but not the Photon Q. I guess I'll just have to carry around a charger instead of a MicroUSB cable when I'm on the road with my laptop.
Thanks, all.

All,
For what little it's worth, I just noticed that the words "Not Charging" come up on the lock screen whenever I connect to the USB port of my laptop or desktop. So the PQ knows it's plugged in; it just refuses to accept the charge.
Also, whenever the battery completely dies, the phone will start to charge. It will charge for a few minutes until it has enough battery to turn itself on. As soon as it turns on, it stops charging, and a minute later, shuts down because of the dead battery. Then it starts charging again. This basically gives me an endless loop of the phone charging, starting, discharging, and shutting back off. I can't even get it to stay off long enough to get a useful charge without turning on automatically.
Yeah, the only issue I've had with this phone at all is the extreme 'quirkiness' it has in regards to charging on anything other than the stock usb cord & power adapter it plugs into. Even using the Moto vehicle dock for the Q, its completely hit/miss on charging. It will *often* go into that 'Not Charging' state where its kind of keeping sort of a baseline/'stalemate' of the current charge level for me, not really going down but not charging back up either. Not really sure what's up with that. With my vehicle dock for the longest I kept thinking maybe my cig lighter port on my car is bad, but I don't have issues with my radar detector at all.
Had the same problem with the not charging a few days back. I was leaving the phone in Mass Storage mode because just getting it into Mass Storage was a headache originally.
Hooked it up to it's original cable and woke up with 65% battery. Switched from mass storage to charge only and it started charging.
Not sure if it was caused by being in Mass Storage and wouldn't charge but now I put in Charge Only before bed.
It always works (in my experience) with the original cable that comes with it regardless, its anything else where its quirky.

Isn't there a setting in ##3282# that enables and disables USB charging? Y'all have probably thought of this already. Anyways just thought if throw that out there. This is my first android that was not a low usage device. I know very little about it. I seriously think xda should make tee shirts that say "everything I have learned in life I learned from xda".
