Android Music - Issue with albums with multiple artists - General Questions and Answers

Hi all,
Albums with multiple artists are showing in the music player (both HTC and default android) as multiple albums rather than one album.
I have tagged these correctly in iTunes with an album artist of 'Various Artists' and leaving the correct artist as the song artist.
Is this just the way android works or is it a problem with my phone? How do other people deal with this?
Cheers,
Michael

I believe it has something to do with the albumartist field and the artist field.

This is going to sound stupid/obvious, but are the files in the same folder?
I had edited my tags from the original ones to match the same album (instead of like deluxe, normal, bonus track, or whatever) and they kept showing up different. If you put them in the same folder it fixes that.
If they are, then its probably the album artist field as the other person said

All in the same folder and all have the album artist field correctly filled in. Any other suggestions?

I am using Hyperdroid on the HD2 (Android 2.3.4) and I get the same issue. The difference with me is that it used to be fine and suddenly one day, it decided all the tracks belonged in their own album...
I wonder if it's because I did an in place upgrade from the previous version of Hyperdroid, based on 2.3.3?
Anyway, will wipe my card and put it all back on, see if that cures it.

I have this issue too when I copied a music album folder into the storage card. It shows two of the same album with the 1st track showing in one album and the rest in the other.
Any solutions? Thanks!

doubleTwist player fixes it.

Tag Album artist for all the tracks with "Various artists" (or what you want) and let each artist name in Artist tag only.
This way no more multiple albums.

I had the same problem too, but after editing the ID3 information it worked fine. One tip is to set the songs in the right order like this:
Original setup:
- Song Title
- Song Title
- Song Title
- Song Title
- Song Title
- Song Title
- Song Title
"Correct" setup:
- 1.Song Title
- 2.Song Title
- 3.Song Title
- 4.Song Title
- 5.Song Title
- 6.Song Title
- 7.Song Title
The numbers won't (shouldn't at least) show up in the music player. You also want (as everyone here says) to edit the artist info using a ID3 editor.
- Artist Name: Various Artists
- Album Title: CyberKids' Awesome Mix
- Album Artist: CyberKids' Awesome Mix
- Track Title: *Don't touch this if you're editing all the songs together*
- Track(s): 7
- Track Number(s): 1,2,3,4,5,6,7, (Now it knows there's 7 songs in the album)
- Disc#: 1
- Composer: CyberKids' Awesome Mix
- Year: 2011
- Genre: Salsa

worked for me
Hi everyone!
I write down what I have found. It worked for me.
I'm running Cyanogenmod 7.2 on a Motorla Defy.
The key thing IS the 'Album Artist' filed. BUT you have to force the music player to rescan the song files after changing the tags. An easy way could be is to rename the album's containing folder (even changing one charater is enough). This makes the music player to scan your song files again and rearrange them by the new tags.
Try this!
(It also could be useful to find out where does the player stores the meta tags of the songs and delete that.)
Here is a useful thread i found:

This worked for me!!! Thanks!!
:good:
This worked!!! Thanks a lot!!

How to manage music in Windows Phone 7?

So I'm kind of an exception case for music, where I hunt for all my music via music blogs. The problem with this is that most of the songs I download aren't part of an album, and most of the time are pre releases, or bootlegs.
In these situations how do I organize my music through zune?!
Editing tag information in Zune REQUIRES an album name. Adding albums that don't have an album name are tagged "Unknown Album {Date Added}".
Is there any way to just have the songs without album names hidden? I've even tried using a space, but then it started grouping all of those together as an unknown album .
Other than that do you guys have a particular way in how you organize music?

Uhm. I would just make a bogus album name (aka song name). There's no way to just have album so just do it that way. You can always just look at different ways to look at ur music, by artist, song, etc...

That's what I do for any artist where I have b-sides or demos in addition to the regular albums. I create an album called 'singles' and group all the non-album tracks under those. You could create different albums like this; demos, singles, bootlegs, etc.

[Q] HTC music player issue

hi,
I have a problem with my album list in the player from HTC (the standard player).
i have 3 albums on my sd-cart, 1 album have no problem, but the another 2 have the problem that they stay more than 1 time in the list (see image)
Knows somebody de solution to get all the numbers from that album under 1 album view
Thanks!
Seen that before with my MP3 Players. It was related to the album having different artists for each song, so that when the player would try to sort the albums, it would see them as different ones.
You could try editing the tags of your files so that the artist is the same for each song.
Oke, But what to do if a album have serval artist?
I'm not 100% sure how the HTC music player works but mp3 files typically have ID tags for an album artist and then a track artist. I would try making the "album artist" = Various Artists. See if that helps the music player recognize it as one album.

Thats a good one, i should try!
I have same experience before, it can be fixed by editing the tag, album and song name are from tag, the order of the song also from tag, but it won't display the track# and so I edit each song name with 01, 02 ... also at nearly the bottom of the tag (Windows 7), there something that can separate albums like 1/4, 2/4... if they are different, they will appears in different album.
When you update album art from gracenote, if it doesn't match, recover it to default and choose another song in the album, then update album art according to the song.

Some Artist Backgrounds missing since Mango

Hello,
about a week ago I updated most of my media on my phone with zune social tagger so that most songs had artist backgrounds. These backgrounds showed up on the phone during playback (back then on 7392) and when I played the song in Zune on the PC.
Sometimes I only have single song from an album. If I then searched for the album on the marketplace and found it, it would offer me 30 second snippets of all the songs but the one I have on my phone. Instead, this song would be played from my library without problems and with artist background.
However, since Mango these backgrounds are missing on some songs.
One example is the song "Renegade" from the Jay-Z album "The Blueprint".
I have only this song from the album.
The weird thing is that when I search for album in the marketplace, find it and start to play the tracks, it shows me the artist background.
However, when the track I have on my phone (Renegade) comes up, the artist background disappears.
On the PC the background is still there.
Any ideas?
OK I got a little further.
Apparently with Mango the way the artist backgrounds work has been changed at least a little bit.
The thing that was wrong in the song mentioned above (Renegade) was this:
The song is from a Jay-Z album and is by Jay-Z and Eminem. I had set the artist to this:
Jay-Z; Eminem
However, it was recognized as one artist by Zune and as such the artist of the song would show up as "Jay-Z; Eminem" which is not what I intended.
So I changed the artist tag using Windows Explorer. I first removed all the artist, then wrote in "Jay-Z" and saved, and then wrote in "Eminem" (after the auto generated semicolon) and saved again. I don't really know what's different in the artist tag now but somehow Zune seems to regocnize that there are two artist and only displays the first artist (as it should).
This fixed the missing background for this song.
Additonally, I noticed that songs which are not linked to Zune Marketplace songs now also have artist backgrounds as long as the artist tag is correct and I have an album by that artist on my phone.
For example the album "The Marshall Mathers LP" by Eminem is not in the German Zune Marketplace but I have it on my phone (not linked using zune social tagger).
When I play a song from that album I do have an artist background as long as the artist mp3 tag is set to Eminem (or set to "Eminem; xxx", as long as it is done using Windows Explorer (or probably also WMP etc.)).
However there are still artist backgrounds missing for some music from the device while they show up in the Zune software on the pc and the artist tag is correct.
For these artists I also don't have any backgrounds in when I tap on their names.
Another thing that doesn't work (probably a missing feature) is that when I play all songs by Eminem, Zune does not add songs to the list where Eminem is only the secondary artist (such as Renegade as noted above).

[Q] Music: Location, Directory and File Structure

Am I putting the music and artwork in the right place? I cant get any music player to display my artist/song art while the song is playing. Song plays fine just without artwork showing.
I have put it in the external_sd directory and the directory above that one... can't seem to get it to work with any music players.
I have my artwork in a folder labeled as "Album Art". Files inside that folder are named as "artist - song.jpg"
I have another folder labeled as "Music". Files inside that folder are named as "artist - song.m4a"
I have tried having all the files (jpg and m4a) in 1 folder called "Music" .. nothing works... I don't want to embed the pictures ... would take forever .. and I don't want to have separate folders/sub-folders for each artist and album by that artist... as I have lots of one-hit-wonders.
Any ideas from anyone would be appreciated.
Which music player are you using? I tag artwork to the actual metadata of the songs which works flawlessly

I've tried winamp, mixzing, poweramp, android music player, doubletwist... etc.
None of my music has tags.. I have media monkey and Mp3Tag.. what do I do to associate the two files?
ok.. made tags that include artist and title from the filename of the song using mp3tag

If you're using media monkey the best thing is to highlight a album or songs, press shift+enter, then go to artwork and save the photo to the file and not folder. It should work after that
Seems to be working a little better having tags on the music... but when I play songs it shows the first albumart it reads for all songs of the band no matter if the song is from different album... I'm just trying to get it to show the correct albumart for the song playing.. at least it is showing the correct artist for the song now

With media monkey clean out the artwork, go to the artwork tab and delete the ones you don't need and set the correct art to front cover. Make sure if you are doing the shift+enter I mentioned that you are only doing it for albums and not artists or it will put the same xd cover for all songs by artist instead of just the album
I have ALL of my music in just one folder titled "music"... will that still work? .. I'll try it out and report back

[BUG] Albums with multiple artists are only displaying one song.

So after downloading this and firing it up I ran into this bug almost immediately which sadly makes the app near unusable for me.
You see I listen to a lot of music which does not have one universal album artist. Instead thee are multiple artists per album (basically a compilation album)
The problem arises when I want to open an album. Instead of getting all the tracks in an album and having the artist name underneath each track only 1 song gets displayed for each album which is usually either the first or last track.
It isn't like the songs are split into different albums either (although that would be probably worse so please don't so that if you work on fixing this). They are just completely absent from the album section.
It seems the grouping criteria involves the folder and ARTIST to be the same in order for something to get grouped as an album which isn't ideal for someone like me who listens to mostly compilation albums.
What might be a good solution is implementing a feature I have seen in another music player called rocket player. With rocket player you can actually select how you want albums grouped. For example I have it set so that songs which are in the same folder and are listed as being from the same album are grouped under one album. The artist tag doesn't actually come into play in this way which stops this issue with the sorting from actually happening.
I really do hope this gets fixed soon as for me it is a major drawback which makes the app almost unusable. At the very least implementing an option so the user can set how albums are grouped would be ideal.
I have attached some screenshots showing this issue below. (I have also attached a screenshot of what the album should look like when seen from another music player as well as a screenshot of that album grouping feature I talked about with rocket player)
Attachment Key:
First Image is what I see in Encore
Second and third image is what I was supposed to see (I.E those are all the songs that should be displaying)
Fourth image shows the Album grouping feature from rocket player
