It seems that ATT has disabled the ability to make the phone use 2G (EGDE) only in the default settings menus....however after searching the web for an answer and not finding anything but "it cant be done" ....I have figured it out with the app ANY CUT
For anyone who has not figured out how to force your Backflip to EDGE only in order to conserve battery life and if you are in an area known not to have 3G coverage here is what you do:
1. In the Market, download Any Cut. (This is a free app)
2. open Any Cut and choose New Shortcut
3. select Activity
4. Scroll down the list until you get to Phone Info
5. Select OK. (this will place the short cut on your homescreen)
6. Open the shortcut and scroll down until you see "Set Preferred Network Type"
7. Choose GSM only and you are set. This forces the phone to EGDE.
I have also turned the phone off and then turned it back on to make sure the setting sticks and it does 100%.
Enjoy.
DISCLAIMER: Please keep in mind that although I have 100% success with this that your results may vary depending what system tweaks you have already done on your phone. I have received both positive and negative feedback on this method so if it does not work for you i apologize.
wouldn't work
Hey man- I tried this and can see the menu but it keeps "hopping" back when I try to select it.. any other ideas? Thanks!

you are not the only one... he's been posting this method on most of the backflip forums and it seems to work for a minimal amount of people... if it works for ya, great... if you are like the majority, that it doesn't work for... keep trying, and digging for a solution... i've been messin with apn droid myself... but that turns off the data/edge/3g completely... not exactly what i was looking for, but it does save on battery
the one that i am trying to figure out is the operator selection... if i could get that setting from automatic to manual, i would feel alot better about this handset
This worked for me on the Motorola Bravo
I just wanted to add that this method has worked for me as well on the Motorola Bravo. For what it's worth.
I find a new way to set up the network selection.
Your phone must be rooted first.
open the file 'defaults.xml'
in the folder etc\motorola\com.android.phone
and change
<boolean name="network_select_menu" value="false" />
to
<boolean name="network_select_menu" value="true" />
save and restart ur phone.
Now u can change 3G to 2G from
setting->wireless&networks> Mobile networks > Select
network

So I`m new here and if my thread is not on the right place - sorry. And here it is my problem:
I`m using Widgetsoid Switcher Widget and have this very annoying problem that when i turn on something it not works (For example: I turn on my data service, widget indicates that it`s turned on but actually it's not. If I turned it on from the Settings menu the widget indicates it`s turned on and when I stop it from the widget it doesn`t stop). Same with WiFi and GPS... This thing is freaking me out so if somebody can help me it would be great or if you can tell me other app like that one with options for customization. Thanks in advance

Hi,
Try to uninstall, install and reboot directly after install (it's important!).
After go to global preferences and check "Disable all apn"
Create your widgets and it will be ok.
Now everythings is fine but Data Service still doesnt't work... Any ideas?
data toggle help
i had the same problem with the data/3g toggle on my htc evo. what you have to do is go to "settings->wireless & networks->then scroll down and make sure there is a check mark in the "mobile network" setting" in order for the widget to control it the setting must first be enabled. it took me and the dev 3 days to find this out.
also if that doesn't work go into the app itself and as soon as it opens it you should see something at the top that says data toggle mode. make sure that setting is set to "APN toggle" and not "APN rename"
hope this helps. remember to rep if it did
Thanks man
No problem

I had a similar problem today, it looks like the data switch in Widgetsoid places a dash in front of your AccessPoint name in order to block data transfer and removes that dash when you click switch again.
After messing with Widget I was not able to connect to net, I installed, uninstalled, etc, and then I noticed that APN list was empty, I had to add the APN again and restart it, I think (as said above) that you need the data to be ON then do a restart in order for Widgetsoid to properly read the status.
If you're rooted, use the new "root method" to toggle data. It doesn't mess with your APN & it works flawlessly for me. It's the first time I've had a data toggle that actually works.
A simple method
FIX = Settings>Location & Security>Select Device Administrators> *Uncheck Widgetsoid
Uninstalled

I know this is an old thread, but where is the global preferences on version 3.4.1 it doesnt appear when I click apply.

Stay FAR away from Widgetsoid. It can slow a Galaxy S5 down to a Crawl. Your Dialer will not function, Your phone will not respond. Its trying to load your phone with Ads or something and keeps your CPU busy, whether its a dual core or quad doesn't matter. Developer does not respond and does not seem to care. After uninstalling this App, the phone feels "new" again.
I believe this app is some type of Spyware/Malware combo. Why does it need access to my Contacts? Something very fishy and the developer never responds. It's a great Widget when it works but certain things about it don't seem right. Uninstalled!
i keep being asked which app i would like to perform actions - i make a selection & all is fine until the phone is rebooted, then off it goes again.
i've trawled the general system settings looking for a toggle but failed to find anything related to default settings storage.
any help appreciated
my set-up is in my sig.

Probably another program overriding your selections. Try try going to Menu button on your phone and select Settings option, scroll down to the Applications section and tap it. On the next screen, tap Manage Applications and then the All tab on the subsequent screen, scroll down the list of apps until you see the App in question listed and tap that entry. On the next screen look for the "Launch by default" section and hit the Clear defaults button. Reboot and select the default program you want and see if it sticks on the next reboot. Let me know if this helps.

good logical advice, which you would assume would do the trick.
unfortunately, it doesn't fix the problem
i was wondering if there's a file somewhere whch can be edited & locked?
im not 100% sure where those things are saved, maybe in settings.db file of the android settings app.
Check your phones app directory, there should be something like
com.android.providers.settings and com.android.settings
I could imagine that the filepermissions are wrong on certain files and thus your new selection are not saved.
i've searched for hours with no success for a db file. i do believe you are on the right trac but it'll take a smarter mind than my own to highlight where the setting is hiding.
there is a lockscreen toggle option on the redux2 rom, so i've asked over there.
thank you both for your thoughts
I keep thinking I read a post by someone saying this was possible at some point but if they did, I can't seem to find it by searching. Is there a way to try and force the phone to connect to LTE connections only? I can't find anything obvious in the settings to do this if so...CDMA only certainly. Seems like though if I'm remembering right it might have been in one of the dialer menu settings?

Go into Phone, dial *#*#4636#*#*, then go into phone information, slide to the bottom, and there will be an option for "LTE Only"
Don't have that option here....when I go into that menu I see:
Phone information
Battery information
Usage statistics
Wi-Fi information
Motorola Services
That's it.

Did you miss the body of my post?
Ok I see it now, I went into all the submenus earlier but didn't see it originally. Its not all the way at the bottom of Phone Info, it's about 2/3rds of the way down cramped between a couple of buttons that it sits above, and underneath the title header 'Set preferred network type', just for anyone else that may be looking for this.

I can confirm that you can toggle it back and forth, but I can't confirm it works in the purest sense because thus far there's no LTE in my area unfortunately.
When I originally posted inquiring about this was the night before I headed back home from PA and had hoped I'd be able to use the ability to to do some more fully-fleshed out Sensorly mapping rather than constantly having to toggle airplane mode on and off, but I didn't get the answer until I was back home.
Now that i am home i can confirm this does work. Thanks again zodiac!
Coming from a long line of Sony phones, I recently bought a locally-made (PH) phone in hopes of getting more bang for the buck.
The device's name is STARMOBILE UP. It is relatively new so I can't seem to find answers to my problem. I also do not know what OEM device this is since local brands in the Philippines rebrand phones from Micromax, Karbonn, etc.
While I successfully (and painstakingly) rooted it and installed CWM, I can't seem to find the other (and mostly more important) options under Developer Options (please see attached photo). Among the options I am looking for is the ANIMATION SCALE. I want to lower these values in order to save the phone from unnecessary eye candy.
In the many phones I have used in the past, I have always turned these options off. I don't really need them.
Is there any way, then, to make these missing developer options appear? Or if not, just totally disable these animations via terminal?
If it will be of any help, my device runs 4.4.2. Please see attached image for more info.
Thanks in advance, awesome folks!

I know that tapping the Build Number seven times should make the 'hidden' Developer Options appear. But as you can see, the Developer Options is NOT HIDDEN, it's incomplete.
Aside from that, this model has no Build Number as you can see on the screenshot posted above. Instead, it has Model Number, which, if tapped seven times, doesn't do anything.
Also, another problem, Notifications in Kitkat seem to make the screen wake up every time there is a notification. I fiddled with Notification and Messaging settings and there seems to be no way to turn this feature off. Any tips?

Regarding missing options, it is probably a modification the OEM made.
About notification, I have a Nexus 5 and I've never seen something like that. Does it happen with every app?

On point 1, it could be the case. God, I miss the animation scale option.
As for the notifications, I have notifications set to ON for Messaging only so I don't know the case for other apps.

No animation scale in Developer Options
I have a THL T11 and the animation scales (window, transition) are also missing in the Developer Options. It seem that it is common many chinese phones have incomplete Developer Options menu.
I tried "Spare Parts" app which has options to modify animation, but it does not work.
I searched a long time for an answer on how to change the animation scale settings in this situation and finally found it!
NOTE: since every phone is different, it may not work on your phone. You also need a rooted phone (which you already have) to make the mod.
(1) install "Dev Tools" by Dipesh Rathod from Google Play store
find "Settings.Global" under "Device" menu
click "Settings.Global" - > look for (i) animator_duration_scale (ii) transition_animation_scale (iii) window_animation_scale
@@ If you DO NOT have "Settings.Global" or any of the above animation scale entries, sorry you cannot use this method to change the scale @@
If you have the above items on the list, continue ...
(2) press "back" button on your phone to return the main menu of Dev Tools -> see if you have "SQlite".
If you don't, you need to install it from Google Play store (app is called "sqlite installer")
(3) YOUR PHONE NEEDS TO BE ROOTED ALREADY. Install "Terminal Emulator" from Google Play Store
(4) open Terminal Emulator and follow this procedure:
a) type "su" (without quotation marks) and press <Enter> - to gain root access
b) type "chmod -R 777 /data" (without quotation marks) and press <Enter> - to allow read/write in /data folder and subfolders
c) type the following to change window animation scale and press <Enter>:
Code:
sqlite3 "/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db" "update global set value = '0' where name = 'window_animation_scale';"
d) type the following to change transition animation scale and press <Enter>:
Code:
sqlite3 "/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db" "update global set value = '0' where name = 'transition_animation_scale';"
e) type the following to change animator duration scale and press <Enter>:
Code:
sqlite3 "/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db" "update global set value = '0' where name = 'animator_duration_scale';"
(this is already off on my phone, therefore I did not make this change myself)
NOTE: Use '0' to turn the animation off completely. I use '0.5' on my phone because I find that this is smoothly than turning it off completely, and faster than '1' (default on my phone).
f) you can close Terminal Emulator now (top right "X" button and choose OK)
(5) REBOOT THE PHONE to apply these changes.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just for curiosity, I used Dev Tools to look at my Galaxy Note 2 - there is NO "Settings.Global" or "Settings.System", and I cannot find any entries for animation scale. Therefore, I made a disclaimer this method may not work on all phones.
"Settings.Global" overrides "Settings.System" therefore you don't need to use this method to change the System setting (eg. "... update system set value ..."). Making changes to "Settings.System" only affect the Android system UI transitions but not the app transitions.
OK guys I hope this hasn't already been covered but here goes anyway. I have found this fix for notifications not arriving when doze is enabled. Iff you go into the particular app e.g what's app then into data usage you must select the following settings see pic below. then all the notifications will arrive straight away regardless of doze state.

Yes that seems to be the problem. I had made a post months ago. It's very hidden feature by Lenovo and I think it's wrong to pre-restrict all background data. User should decide what to do.
I think they lenovo did it to block unnecessary data usage but i agree it is not needed and people are thinking their is something wrong with their phones.
Thanks for the tip
Thanks Sam, I saw this on the JJ review of Nougat. Is this for Nougat as my MM P2 settings don't look like the screenshot.
Sent from my Lenovo P2a42 using Tapatalk
Hi yes it is for Nougat the comment posted on JJs review regarding this fix was posted by me also.
Confusing settings these as the first one makes it look like enabling the "Restrict background data" option will disable background data, when in fact it does the opposite. You need to have both of these options enabled so the sliders are green, then you need to open Settings > Power Manager > Battery Optimization
Then you need to search for the apps that you need to fix notifications and change the option so it says "Don't optimize". Then the phone won't 'helpfully' close the app when the phone has been unused for a long time. This is why notifications are stopping.
precisely i agree quite confusing it took me a while i had to get a friend to send me whats app messages continuously untill i figured all this out but im glad i finally did.
If you make the changes to fix the notifications, shut down and power the phone back on rather than do a reboot. The settings don't seem to work until the phone has properly rebooted.
Is it worth noting that elsewhere it's stated that turning off doze altogether (using ADB) might be a saner option? Consensus seems to indicate it's basically a curse with little value, and that would certainly hold water in light of the battery capacity of the P2.

Guys, to avoid having to run the ADB command after each reboot follow these instructions (please note, the files should be downloaded to a PC and then transferred to your phone via USB otherwise they mess up sometimes):
You need to enable USB debugging mode in Developer options first
Download and install this apk and transfer it to your phones storage - https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxD...w?usp=drivesdk
Then connect phone to PC and allow the drivers to install
Download and install ADB here - https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0M...ljU2NPR0k/view
Go into the ADB folder, hold shift, right click and select "Open command prompt here"
Type the command: adb devices (now hit enter)
It should return your phones serial number is connected correctly
Run this command in ADB: adb -d shell pm grant com.adamioan.scriptrunner android.permission.DUMP (now hit enter)
Download this file and transfer it to your phones storage - https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bx...VA4YmxGTS1OX3c
Open the SH Script runner app and tap the three dots in the top right corner, select "Load" and locate the file from teh previous step
Click the Circle button with the play sign at the top of the screen
You should see the message "Idle mode disabled" which means that Doze has now been disabled.
Whenever you reboot your phone, open the SH Script runner and the command will still be there, just click the play button to run the script again.
And that is it, two clicks to disable Doze after each reboot.
Full credit to manototh for putting this together originally.
Doze does not need disabling iff you follow my advice in the initial post i have tried and tested this and can confirm it works fully.
This is really frustrating. No matter what settings I use I still don't get notifications after a while. I don't want to go modifying my phone, can someone post a step by step if they have it working properly?

Yep doesn't work either.
Perhaps your only option left is to try the disable doze app which has worked for many people but it's a paid app.
Just to update it does seem to be working properly now. I'm not 100% sure but I think turning the phone all the way off and on again instead of rebooting with the settings correct had the desired effect.
