Hi folks-
I've seen a couple applications in the marketplace that allow you to check out traffic cameras in your area. Traffic Edge doesn't seem to have anything for Northern Virginia and not much of DC while the other one scared me off with poor grammar and syntac in their ad. Anyone have a good experience with an application that has a lot of cameras (hopefully in my area)? NBC news once had one for my area, but since discontinued it.
If there isn't a good application per se, but another program that can display images if you point it to the right direction (I once had a weather tab on my Tilt that I could program to pull traffic images) I would appreciate it.
My thanks in advance!

You could try Speed Sentry
If you can find a speed camera database for your area it will warn you;
a: When you exceed a set limit
b: When you approach a camera
The usual way to do this in europe is to use the pocketgpsworld camera database either with your sat nav or with e.g. POI-Warner
If you buy POI_Warner for Navigon MN7 it runs stand alone without any sat nav software, again you need to subscribe to a camera database.

I think the OP wants to view images from traffic cameras not find speed cameras. i would also find this useful for the uk but haven't seen anything yet.

hi ,
try this one

found this (works in uk). the colours of the camera images look a bit strange on my hd2 but maybe that's the cameras rather than the software.

Hi all,
I use this one and it does the job for me.
Im working on a small app that runs in the background and warns when close to a camera, based on a poi-file which it downloads regurlarly (checks first if there's a difference between the file on the server and the one being in use). I'm still a bit concerned over the batterydrainage and its still in closed beta at the moment...
If I ever get it done (dont have much spare time to work on it) I'll post on xda and let ppl test it.
It pulls a file from a certain website, format of the file is something like
20.28653, 63.81951, "Storgatan västerut i Umeå -"
20.28674, 63.81951, "Storgatan österut i Umeå -"
20.41038, 67.84314, "Geofysiska 2 E10"
and simply matches the gps nmea to the coords in the file. So far I've only tried this for swedish coords, but shouldnt be impossible to use it outside .se.
All the app does is that it plays a sound when a camera is nearby or you are closing in on it (~ 500meters or so). No gui or anything else.
As I said, its a closed beta so far (tested by myself and two of my colleagues) so dont bother asking about it yet
I've created something similiar, but for Singapore only. But if you have coordinates, the site that provides the cam picture, I think it can be easily extended to other countries.

Thanks, this program has a great selection of cameras in my area and I'd even be willing to pay a monthly cost if needs be, but the problem is the camera images are completely distorted and a "finger painting bright colored" mess. Sucks

Same deal for me. Great selection of cameras, awful image quality. I emailed tech support and they had no clue why it was looking like that. Bummer.

I posted this over at HoFo but figured a few may enjoy it here too...
I started playing with the CoolCamera software by Ateksoft and realized that it can act as a wireless webcam.
So....
I loaded it up on my T-Mobile Dash, configured it to connect to my home PC by forwarding port 2047 on my router to a spare PC. I installed the PC webcam software on that PC, but also installed Microsoft Windows Media Encoder v9.
I set the encoder to stream from a device, and selected Coolcamera from the device list (since I had installed the camera SW it added a driver for it) and then set it to "content is pulled" and opened another port on my firewall for the outgoing stream, and started the encoder.
So now anytime I want I can launch Cool Camera on my phone, and whatever the webcam sees, can also be watched by anybody with a PC by opening WM and pointing it to my home URL (which is through DynDNS so no IP required) "http://mycoolcamera.dyndns.org:1043" or if you don't use a DNS service "http://192.168.0.1:1043" or whatever your external router IP is.
Not sure what good it is, it's very slow over Edge, more like a slideshow than video, works a bit better over WiFi, but lacks audio, and isn't a very good picture either way.
It is however pretty cool to know I could prop up my phone anywhere and see what it's seeing from any PC, anywhere, anytime. It also shows you what you can do with these devices, some free software (the demo camera app will run for 25 secs. at a time) and a rainy Sunday afternoon.

Yup, CoolCamera is GREAT. I've also published several articles on it; see for example http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/in...icle_on_ateksoft_coolcam&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 and http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=970&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1
yeah. I second that... coolcamera is great. really worth it's price, way better then the builtin software

Ok, what am I missing? The screen is less cluttered, but I could not find:
1) a help file or manual?
2) a way to quickly/easily toggle the flash on and off
3) anything really standout - what's great about it for you?
-the menu system is fairly non-intuitive - touch screen to bring it up, then use cursor keys to move/select????
-menu system hiccups - like blank lines you have to skip over when given the choice of post-picture options (save, discard, etc)
-very limited key mappings (e.g. no way I saw to map things like flash enable/disable)
-still susceptible to the "I changed from camera to video camera by accidentally touching the cursor keys" problem
Honestly, unless I can find some documentation and functionality, it looks like a nice freeware app, but no way it's worth $18 at this point.
I didn't try CoolCapture - which you don't seem to be able to avoid loading - or CoolWebWhatever - which is of mild interest (and maybe included if you purchase before Friday?)

Not my point, sorry - it DOES support the TyTN/Hermes flash, but the enable/disable switch is buried several levels deep in a menu. Anyone using a point and shoot camera would expect to find a simple one-button switch to enable/disable the flash - I expect the same here, and didn't find it.

Well... My main reason would be the greater speed when using the camera. For me the htc camera app will need about 8 seconds from the time that I start the app to when I have an actual picture. Coolcamera cuts this down to about 2 seconds. And I love the fact that it automatically changes to night mode in low light conditions. The added quality settings is also something I find very useful and I overall find it to be a much more capable camera app then the htc one.
Hope that clarifies it a little
ugh.
how to connect my PC to CoolCamera?(my WM Device)
I can't get it to capture my phones screen as a webcam on my touch pro2, it says camera and camera+
Because simply put, the $11 geocaching app is kinda crap. I'd like to have an overlay on the stock 'maps' app that'll show me the nearby ones, so I can do more than one at a time. Kind of a pain in the arse to do it their way.

c:geo has some uses, but IMO it's too slow to load data (online or GPX) and its main usefulness is if you're caching in an area which you don't already have a Pocket Query for, or for a brand new just published cache you don't have a PQ for.. So for those times I keep it on hand.
My actual caching program is GeOrg. It's $6 but it's well worth it. It's fast as lightning loading GPX, it doesn't slow down when you have 500 or even 1500 entries in a database, you can have many databases to separate out data, and it has great tools built into it, great Maps integration to navigate inside the client, compass is great, and it also has great integration with Google Maps to navigate using the old school 2d overview or using Google Navigator.
FYI for my usage, I tend to make a database per PQ because then I know which to load based on where I am and there's less to scroll through, but you could as easily load all of your PQs into the same DB. I went somewhere over a weekend and loaded up 2300 caches in one DB and there was no noticeable slowdown.
AND... If you load your PQs into bcaching, there is a connector there which you can use to access, so if you really want online on the fly without having GPX on the device you can do it that way OR if you can compile yourself, he provides a completely ready to compile project for a connector directly to geocaching.org to load data directly from their databases, but he won't provide it in binary/apk form to comply with their rules. Either way is still faster than c:geo
And you can of course log or create field notes in the app. There are also some useful solvers built in, you can create waypoints, do offsets (waypoint projection), store databases in internal storage or on SD card, etc.. He also has plans to support Bluetooth GPS directly in his app in the future, but I've found Bluetooth GPS Provider works great for that for increased accuracy and sensitivity vs the internal GPS in my Nexus One.
BTW, I use Tasker to get PQ's onto my phone, but you could do it any number of ways. You could save them from email or whatever works best for you. I've had a system for about 5 years where all of my PQ's arrive at my server and are digested and placed into one central zip file so I download that one file for my "local area" and that's what I typically import when I update the database when going out caching, and I have a larger zip file which contains all the other PQ's that I update when I go to one of those locations. GeOrg can update directly from the zip, or you can point it right at a gpx.
If you're at all serious about Geocaching, GeOrg is the way to go.
If you don't have a premium membership I'd also suggest to use "c:geo" - its free and not that slow as it sounds in khaytsus' post and it provides all the important features, but more userfriendly (my opinion) than "geOrg".
I use it mostly for paperless caching even with parallel use of my Oregon device for exact navigation. But i don't have a pm and the original gc-app is crap (just my opinion, too).
c:geo has an builtin compass as well and uses the google maps client/navigator for map and navigation. It can store caches including notes and waypoints offline, can calculate waypoints ("waypoint projection") and log founds online.
The most awesome feature is the "livemap": it shows the immediate environs around your position with all known caches - with their types and if they're deactivated or not. This map follows your movements, which is interesting for caching tours by car or bike...
The author of the app is providing fixes very fast, sometimes maybe too often, but everytime when it's necessary.
I've tried "Columbus" as well, but it didn't fit my needs and i've found it not as clear as c:geo. But it's worth to try it, too...
so... it has a localized map of geocaches in your surrounding area that'll respond to basic 'zoom' commands, so I can just wander around while bored and do some caches?
...Looking at it, yes. Yes it does. God I love you guys.
I don't have a premium account. Would that prevent the awesomeness that it is from working?
I ask because I'm a tool and I bought the $11 geocaching app thinking it'd add a layer on maps...

All that applies to GeOrg, as I already said But it's much faster. You can not compare the speed at which GeOrg imports GPX vs c:geo importing GPX. Nor can you compare the speed at which GeOrg loads details vs the c:geo load details for nearby caches. Live map functionality is pretty similar, the only difference is that GeOrg doesn't directly provide a feed from geocaching.org since it violates their Terms of Service. They do directly provide a bcaching feed which is pretty much the same. Personally I am a Premium Member so I have GPX and can load up the local caches and go in seconds.
For people who also use GSAK there is a new free app: GDAK on the market.
GeoTag
I noticed that this is an old thread, but for people who are still interested:
I use GeoTag which I took off my SE X10i Mini, a bit of searching will lead you to it.
It looks like google maps with minature versions of your geotagged images overlayed and you can select them to view in gallery
Works good for me but each to thier own!!! )

He has to be responsive, he's scraping data and Geocaching.com breaks that every time they update...
Shame that loading GPX data into c:geo wasn't more responsive.
I'll stick with GeOrg, it's extremely fast, flexible, has a LOT more tools for hunting and placing caches built into it, and as I've already mentioned can do On The Fly caching just like c:Geo if you really want that.

Is that using precached tiles with the Custom Tiilepack map type? Yeah I forgot to mention that, although I use BackCountry Navigator.. Topo and OSM maps, I can't get the sat tiles to view properly, I suspect because they're 512 pixels rather than 256 but not sure.
I need to pester the GeOrg dev about that.
Hi all,
When I place a video call to my friend using the front facing camera, my friend sees my video as sideways and mirrored. I see my local preview as sideways and NOT mirrored. This problem exists no matter how I rotate the phone.
I should see my local preview as mirrored (like desktop version) and my friend should see it as NOT mirrored. Both of us, of course, should not see the video as sideways.
I'm surprised that nobody is talking about this issue. I don't know when the bug crept in, because I don't use Skype on the phone that often due to what seems like higher battery drain when Skype is running. I did some reading online about the issue, and it looks like the HTC EVO 4G suffers from the same problem, which means a LOT of people can't properly Skype again!
I did try messing with the enable/disable rotation setting in both the Skype app as well as in Android settings. I also tried rolling back to a previous build that worked properly, but as some have mentioned, rolling back to a known good build (that supported front cam) doesn't fix the problem.
I don't really think there is an easy fix for this, but I thought maybe if we discuss it here a bit, well..... ya never know.

I had a similar issue with google+ video chat. My video used to come sideways to others. This was happening in GB.
I found that version 2.1.0.46 allows use of the front facing camera and seems to orient the image properly, however there is a special Version 11 build out there that I found, and I don't know who to give credit for it, that adds an extra settings menu called Advanced Settings, which gives ALL SORTS OF AWESOME CONTROL over image orientation and resolution, among many other things.
The filename I found is Skype_2.1.0.46_v11.apk, and I found it at one of those websites that is 4 sharing files (hint). Again, I don't know who to give credit to for this build, but the advanced menu is SUPERB, and I hope to see more builds like this one!!!

No Doubt!! Settings don't get much more advanced than that!!
New version of skype came out today, and it's worse than before.
Landscape mode only now (no setting for auto-rotation). New bugs with front-facing cam: both local and remote view is mirrored, local preview is upright but stretched, remote view is sideways.
Skype makes a couple minor improvements while breaking the most important functions. Sheesh! Do they test this stuff before release?
Yeah, I dont think they test any of their crap. I dont understand why we are not on the supported list. We were on of the first ffc phones out.

I found this app on android market and i have tried it. This is a great app and it does what it says!
It warns in case of an incoming collision. It also shows the distance of the car in front of you.
And it can takes snapshots at a touch of your finger.
But one other great feature is that it tells you where you have parked using google maps and by taking a photo of what the camera last saw.
Im am not the developer of this app and i am not promoting. This is a free app that i thought it is cool to share.

yes looks useful especially if you are on the road for many hours. and it also has the ability to start user appointed apps.
Ads in the Notification Area.
Dont update to the newest Version. (around 9. Mai 2012)
You will receive at random times push Ads in the Notification Area without accutaly having started the app. There is absolutly no hint to which programm is responsible for them until you uninstall iOnRoad and they stop. Very annoying and the reason for its recent negativ rating. I hope they are scrambling to fix this and might have fixed it already but I would just stay away from this app. The reason for my disgust ist that the developer does not seem to find it important to inform customers about his error or has done it on purpose. Either way is the wrong way.
Here is the mail I got back from iOnRoad Support Team. Thats what got me mad but to be fair my support request was not very diplomatic. For that it was probably acctualy a preaty calm answear.
Hi,
If you do not wish to get the ads you can upgrade to the pro
version here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.picitup.iOnRoad.pro
Or
disable them in the "About iOnRoad" section in iOnRoad's settings.

I wish they would make the Rating system more precise. There are a bunch of factors that could help in making decisions.
Overral App Rating
Overral Rating of the Developer
Version Rating
Another thing I would not mind seeing as a Customer is a precise reason why a App needs certain Access Rights. That would maybe stop Wallpaper Programms to request about every access right there is for every other reason then the app was acctualy intended for.
i guess you are right, but if you actually disable ads from settings do they appear again? i can not test. i have moved away from android until Galaxy S3

Well I am not sure the developer even understands what Ads we are all talking about. He either does not give a .... or he thinks everything is normal and we are talking about the normal Ads in the Programm. Either way over the past 2 days he earned himself over 100 1 Star Ratings for the App. It would probably be higher if People would even know that the Ads are comming from the iOnRoad App. If I would be him I would pull the Mai 9th Version off the Market and revert back to the last version that worked.
at the Argentina developers I saw the appendix which allows to glance for an obstacle... by means of the camera and, wireless connection.
Unless I am missing something, the offline maps feature kinda sucks. While yes, you have the pure basic map available to you, that's about it. Things that still require a data connection:
1. Getting directions - i.e. directions from 49th and 7th to Madison Square Garden
2. Navigation - i.e. the GPS navigator app ("turn right," "rerouting," etc.)
3. Non-major landmarks - the NYC map looks downright empty, as we only get street names and major landmarks... I was hoping that we could still see names of buildings/restaurants/shops, maybe even the 3D building outlines
I get that option 3 will require a lot more storage, but seems worth it (or at least provide an option to save that down).
But the lack of offline directions/navigation really limits the utility of offline maps, imo. I understand if directions may require access to the Google servers to generate a path - but clearly standalone GPS units can all do this without cell/WiFi signal. Seems like there should be a way to do this.
Complaining about new features... Amazing.
Here's an idea, instead of complaining about not having certain landmarks while offline in new york, turn your cell phone connection on and have those features...

I agree with OP. I don't see any major difference with this offline cache against the samething offered previously. So, it is not a new feature to me.

Here is a clue to you: you landed in a foreign country and you know it will cost you an arm or a leg to turn on the cell phone data connection. Or, in the case of CMDA phones, you may not have connections at all. This is why we need to have offline caching.
I think his gripes are valid. What is the point of an offline map if you can't navigate or get directions? Typically people download maps offline when they know they are going to be traveling through/in an area without a strong data connection.
I had no idea those features didn't work in offline mode and just because the missing features don't impact you doesn't mean others don't have valid reasons for wanting/needing them.

You are right. If it's a new feature, it must be flawless, and I must bow down in reverence. I am oh so sorry to offend you.
The point of this thread is to make others aware, see if they agree, if there are other solutions... you know, form a "discussion."
Thanks foxbat and ComposMentis!

Disagreeing and debating is a form of "discussion". What's the point of talking about anything if everyone agrees with you?
Agree with you, no major changes. Offline navi and directions a must!
Super disappointing. I'm not sure why google falls down so badly sometimes.
Well, when I read the google map change, it simply say that map can be downloaded for offline caching. Nowhere does it says it allow for offline search, direction and such.
Yes, does feature have been long time requested and google announce it was coming soon, but one feature like this, as easy as it might seems, can be very hard to implement on a system that wasn't made for it. Having the map offline (for reel now, not those 10 parts max download) is a step in the right direction. Remember when they decided that the map would "fade out" when you are on a long stretch that doesn't have any new information to sa battery? Lots of people requested it's removal or at least an option to toggle it. The feature was made available in a menu like 10 updates later. It's not 1 dev team that's doing everything from google map, google navigation to google itself, where it is the central of all maps query and database.
Unless you can download much, much larger areas at a time, navigation offline will never work. It has to pick directions based on the entire map and all possible routes. Navigation as it stands, im fairly certain, sends requests to google's servers for them to calculate and give back results. Eventually this may be ported to the OS itself as voice diction is now in JB, but as it stands, it requires an internet connection.
new maps suck! before, you could enable precaching in labs and get up to 10 areas downloaded, but now it only works in USA and UK!
and I live in Narnia again -.-
I am not even able to get a large area 2 hours away about 100 miles, would be nice if you could choose the size it could use., or something like this map will be approximately blah blah mb. Do you agree... And offline directions would be really the only reason to use offline, can't think of much more to use it for. I live in an area that has fauxG (hspa+) but 15 min in all directions I'm stuck to edge for the whole area until greenbay, or lower michigan. So having a large area available offline would be nice. Good idea, but bad implementation.

Seeing as they are slowly upgrading a free service, I think the update is just fine...

Used to be able to cache all over the world. Now it's just N. America and UK I guess. Sucks for me

Google Maps gives us Navigation, Places, Traffic, Transit, etc., all for free and they all work pretty well. I'm sure Google is going to enhance the feature soon enough.
I feel they wanted to shed the "Beta" tag ahead of Apple releasing their mapping application but it was probably still too soon.
Used offline mode in SanFran this last week, has just the info it needs, worked great.
which app would provide these features since google doesn't? Nav has become very important to me recently.
Gave it a test on the way to the cities this weekend... Its functional and doesn't appear to need 2-3gb of data like the TomTom app needs...

I'm just wondering how Nokia Maps on Windows Phone OS can do true offline turn-by-turn navigation, and Google Maps cannot. Nokia Maps has had this feature for about 2 or 3 years at least.

It all comes up to $$$. Map data is expensive to license. There are only two map data providers in the world: Tele Atlas (now owned by TomTom) and NavTeq (now owned by Nokia). License terms dictate what Google can do and can't do. For example, Microsoft's Bing Maps on WP7 can't even do what Google Nav can do today.
Nokia Maps are only allowed to work on Nokia phones.
