Wireless Webcam for most HTC Devices - General Topics

I posted this over at HoFo but figured a few may enjoy it here too...
I started playing with the CoolCamera software by Ateksoft and realized that it can act as a wireless webcam.
So....
I loaded it up on my T-Mobile Dash, configured it to connect to my home PC by forwarding port 2047 on my router to a spare PC. I installed the PC webcam software on that PC, but also installed Microsoft Windows Media Encoder v9.
I set the encoder to stream from a device, and selected Coolcamera from the device list (since I had installed the camera SW it added a driver for it) and then set it to "content is pulled" and opened another port on my firewall for the outgoing stream, and started the encoder.
So now anytime I want I can launch Cool Camera on my phone, and whatever the webcam sees, can also be watched by anybody with a PC by opening WM and pointing it to my home URL (which is through DynDNS so no IP required) "http://mycoolcamera.dyndns.org:1043" or if you don't use a DNS service "http://192.168.0.1:1043" or whatever your external router IP is.
Not sure what good it is, it's very slow over Edge, more like a slideshow than video, works a bit better over WiFi, but lacks audio, and isn't a very good picture either way.
It is however pretty cool to know I could prop up my phone anywhere and see what it's seeing from any PC, anywhere, anytime. It also shows you what you can do with these devices, some free software (the demo camera app will run for 25 secs. at a time) and a rainy Sunday afternoon.

Yup, CoolCamera is GREAT. I've also published several articles on it; see for example http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/in...icle_on_ateksoft_coolcam&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 and http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=970&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

yeah. I second that... coolcamera is great. really worth it's price, way better then the builtin software

Ok, what am I missing? The screen is less cluttered, but I could not find:
1) a help file or manual?
2) a way to quickly/easily toggle the flash on and off
3) anything really standout - what's great about it for you?
-the menu system is fairly non-intuitive - touch screen to bring it up, then use cursor keys to move/select????
-menu system hiccups - like blank lines you have to skip over when given the choice of post-picture options (save, discard, etc)
-very limited key mappings (e.g. no way I saw to map things like flash enable/disable)
-still susceptible to the "I changed from camera to video camera by accidentally touching the cursor keys" problem
Honestly, unless I can find some documentation and functionality, it looks like a nice freeware app, but no way it's worth $18 at this point.
I didn't try CoolCapture - which you don't seem to be able to avoid loading - or CoolWebWhatever - which is of mild interest (and maybe included if you purchase before Friday?)

What a wonderful software! Just tried out WebCamera Plus. Works great with my messenger..! Thanks for this thread OP.
btw, I have HTC Prophet (O2 XDA Neo)

Yup, it doesn't support flash in many models, as has also been pointed out in my review.

Not my point, sorry - it DOES support the TyTN/Hermes flash, but the enable/disable switch is buried several levels deep in a menu. Anyone using a point and shoot camera would expect to find a simple one-button switch to enable/disable the flash - I expect the same here, and didn't find it.

FWIW, this wasn't intended sarcastically - I honestly figure if so many people love this and I don't, then I must be missing something....

Well... My main reason would be the greater speed when using the camera. For me the htc camera app will need about 8 seconds from the time that I start the app to when I have an actual picture. Coolcamera cuts this down to about 2 seconds. And I love the fact that it automatically changes to night mode in low light conditions. The added quality settings is also something I find very useful and I overall find it to be a much more capable camera app then the htc one.
Hope that clarifies it a little

ugh.
how to connect my PC to CoolCamera?(my WM Device)

I can't get it to capture my phones screen as a webcam on my touch pro2, it says camera and camera+

[Final Release] JustStable - Let's find the bugs!

XIP: 21041
SYS: 21042
PocketIE: 21043
http://justkitchen.info/JustROMs/
Current Build: JustStable - Final
For more information about my ROMs, you can visit: http://thewingster.com/ivanmmj.aspx
This is to keep track of the bugs in the ROM. So far, I've squashed most of the bugs I've noticed but I just ported a whole new build, so there might be all new bugs to deal with.
Current Reported Bugs:
Themes are missing
Lack of Splash theme
Fix the double click to choose weather on HTCHome
Fixed Reported Bugs:
Change the "Browser Choice" to only the Wing keyboard shortcut and not the the Opera shortcut. Remove it and the Mortscipts from the Herald builds (as it is no longer needed without that Browser Choice
Removed proxy hack that was causing problems with HTCHome's weather.
Cabs won't delete now.
Fixed the VGA screens. Now they're QVGA again.
Suggestions:
Use older version of ArcSoft.
Update version of Jbed.
Remove ICS Control
Go back to the old task icons. Or at least change the Edge icon.
Add notepad with open with.
Add HTC Audio Manager
Yes Ivan your Back. Looking Forward to this rom.
Ivan if we ever get android running on our wings, you should be the one who makes JustEMPTY...lol a super duper clean rom made for running android
P.S. You should join the chatroom hotnsteamy once in a while.
I've thought about it... I can easily make a SUPER crippled ROM with nothing but just what you need to boot android and I can easily make it hook and autorun android.
Nice Rom Ivan
Hey Ivan -- downloaded and using your JustHacked14v3_-_LZX_Wing_Edition.7z and I love it! Very fast, Very Stable.
4/5/09
Yay nice to see something new from you =]] Cant wait =]]
Awesome! I would switch. Running Just2Clean right now, and love it (other than randomly losing 2mb of memory every hour) lolz.
Can't wait!
I'd probably use it. Much like you, I too have noticed that just about every newer ROM has some sort of quirk with it. Sometimes big, sometimes almost unnoticeable. Most are tolerable, but other times you'll run into a ROM where MMS doesn't work at all, or where threaded messaging doesn't work, or the State Menu has an intrusive white block in it, or where the volume control bugs out, or where the preinstalled version of Jbed is unstable, etcetera. It would be nice to have a ROM that is wholly bug free, but I would imagine that it would be hard since I assume that's a goal of just about all chefs.
I'm interested ivan, will be waiting! Thanks!

Well, the good thing is that my ROMs are smaller and therefore, there is less stuff to go wrong, and I can focus all my attention on making the smaller set of features work properly. ^_^

I'm interested. Here's the flexibility I've been looking for. Fairly minimal, clean ROM, but with optimization that could allow me to add/install and run beautifully the following:
(what I'd call my "Personal Configuration")
(a) TouchFlo 2D interface
(b) M2DC customizer for TouchFlo
or
(c) iFonz -- since there will be a completely new release in March, and possibly widgets, so it may become again my favorite navigation tool.
Also, for me must-haves, or I can add these and still get optimal performance:
(d) Large Windows Start Menu, as well as all other menus (this was done in Microlab's (PDAViet's) latest Herald ROM), and I shouted "finally! Hallelujah"
(e) WkTask (in English) -- or some other simple, single-action "close this, switch to this" Task Manager ...vs all the multi-columned default stuff that takes 3 steps to do anything.
(f) the latest Total Commander (ideally, I would want this to replace the limited-value "File Explorer" as the defult
(g) S2U2
(h) a way more decent default dialer -- ideally like supbro's iDialer -- (and even more ideally with every single trace of Windows miniature default interface revised for finger-touch control)
*** Of all the annoyances of a Windows Mobile phone, from my first T-Mobile MDA, thru my current T-Mobile WING, it has been the terrible user experience of simply calling people, and answering the phone when people call me. Between the lack of detection for when phone is to ear to lock all functions and prevent accidental touch-screen activations); to the pathetically byzantine way of simply ADDING A CONTACT, and providing the MOST USED FIELDS *first*, like Name, work phone, home phone, mobile, without having to use a microscope or scroll way down to find a field; to the totally inconsistent methods of EDITING a contact depending on which screen you're on in the interface; the inexplicable confusion of an incoming caller "Save to Contacts" function that then makes you press "new contact" or "blank contact" whatever it is -- instead of "just frikkin add it as it came across with caller ID, and I can edit it later"... when you add all of this together, it's a stoneage experience of using a phone. If Microsft fixed nothing else, except the phone/contacts/history entire interface, they'd eat into iPhone sales.
(i) Something I would really really love: The ability to get WIndows "Pictures and Video" Folder to go to a designated folder I choose for where I store photos, vs every time taking me to Device > My Documents > My Photos, making me then select "Storage Card", then Storage Card again because Windows assume you want to use their multi-layered file-pathing... That would make me 2nd most happy, after having "phone that just works".
(j) Single-tap WIFI ON- WIFI OFF "program link"-- i have to always add a cab file that does this
(k) OperaMini, with that script that opens the javabed and the app built in as the DEFAULT browser. Honestly, I wish I never ever ever had to use IE, but alas I am forced to for various functions even after setting a default browser.
THINGS I WOULD PREFER BE REMOVED WITHIN ROM:
(a) Games. I can add them if I want
(b) Windows Media Player. Seems almost everyone uses HTC's Audio Manager..... (Me, I am liking much more the newer "Nitrogen" player) ... But I would much prefer Audio Manager as default, and WMP availa as a cab file if someone really wants it.
FURTHER THINGS I THINK OF AS REQUIRED, but others have different preferences:
(a) PCM keyboard, with decent selection of skins built in... I think one of the best ever is from "2many" or "2manyphones", but there are several that are large enough for finger-tapping.
======================
Everyone has their fav's, but I am answering with this detail because I have no idea right now which ROMS can best support and provide me this configuration that I deem, for me, to be Minimally Required. Right now I am using thanhy25's new herald 6.1 ROM touchflo 2D... which has most of what I want, and a bunch of stuff I don't want.
I hope this is useful, ivan. Can you tell me re: your CURRENT ROM LINEUP, is this more or less accurate as to the OBJECTIVES of your Roms?
(1) Just2Clean -- for people who have very particular needs or want to having nothing other than what they put on their phones
(2) Just For Me (Just Me?") -- not really a ROM, but a ROM Kitchen that helps people build onto a base ROM, their own catalog of favorite apps etc.
so, "Just Stable" would be WHAT, relative to the 2 above?
Thank you ---
Go go Ivan, eveyone would love to use your rom.

That's one of my unreleased ROM's features. When you press the "IE" shortcut on the keyboard of the Wing and the HTC Atlas, it opens up OperaMini. The only thing is that it doesn't take in links to sites, it errors out on them. This might still be doable.

Just as the name says, stability is the key. I want something usable, stable, lacking of bugs and that I won't be annoyed with. One major example is the contact issue you mentioned, I also find it annoying.
Wow - something I rarely see at XDA! Thorough replies; thank you. Since this is just a wish list, there's one other annoyance: I'd like to have a shortcut link to "Remove Programs", so I don't have to dig into Settings > System > to get it. And a cherry on top would be a layperson's access to any setting control to make it a shortcut link, like Backlight for example. If I'm not mistaken, this capability is partially there in Quick Menu -- another app I love, but it wouldn't make the cut for a minimal ROM.

I am not technical enough to know. I can only go by how efficient it is to have 5 icons to the right of the Windows Start icon, indicating 5 apps open, and maybe they are Total Commander, OperaMini, iContact, Notes, and my music player -- and to switch apps i tap on the icon; instant change. If I tap and hold, a context menu comes up (like a normal right-click), and i can close that app, or set prefs for that app -- such as "always hide this app" etc. It's also got a slidable adjuster of the total width of the open-apps icons showing, with a "continued" right-arrow appearing when you move to the left cutting off any icon (very Windows task-bar-like). Sorry I don't have a tangible answer, but I'll shoot a video clip of my using it so you can see its responsiveness.

Here's an indicator, PDAviet (Microlab's) latest ROM chose S2U2 v. 1_18 which you can see on A_C's change log it's pretty far down the list of recent versions.
(h) a way more decent default dialer -- ideally like supbro's iDialer -- The dialer is the main reason why I decided to cook again, so I'm open to ideas. I had a modified dialer that looked great but had more bugs that I could count and it was driving me insane. I'm going to try supbro's iDialer and see how I like it.

Worth noting is that Supbro's got some pretty tight integration now with iContact + iDialer, they both call each other, and he's also added now "Green Button", which, like hard-button remapping apps, assigns iDialer to the Green Call button, which makes for some pretty seamlessintegration. And his iDialer works perfectly with the other strain of iContact, Burt's Edition. What I've had to do, as my best workaround solution for the Windows built in dialer, to handle all the in-call functions, is use this: Snachez's "iPhydle" skin atop Paul De Groot's Minimal Dialer -- which seems to me to be a replacement dialer. But when I asked Supbro a month or so ago, he said "Paul's Minimal Dialer is not a true replacement dialer, but rather just a skin. That's not the read Paul's post, but again, I'm not a coder so .... ??
(and even more ideally with every single trace of Windows miniature default interface revised for finger-touch control)
Unfortunately, this is all built-in code, so unless you know of a contact app replacement that can do this well, I would (have) to write an app from scratch to do so.

I've never seen any replacement app that handles "add new contact" and all those pieces. Why hasn't HTC written one? They're slowly but surely replacing usage of many Windows Mobile apps, but that's beyond my pay-grade to understand.

Does HTC's "Album" solve that in their implementation? A_C has been steadily improving "S2V" (slide to view), but it doesn't alleviate that Windows problem, and i'm guessing it's too bloated for your lean standards. ... A related note: in "Microlab's" (PDAviet's) latest ROM, he's added a control setting that lets users assign which folder S2U2 should go to for Wallpapers, so he's somehow broken apart one of the setting controls A_C uses within both S2U2 and S2V... and the photo folder selector functionality is some subset of A_C's S2V app, but as far as I know, Microlab has not cooked in the whole S2V app. All of which is just my speculations that those 2 people would be good sources for code solution ideas. I don't know how freely people share code, but i know that's a core value of XDA, and I know for fact that A_C and Supbro collaborate and share solutions. Not sure this is helpful, but just trying to compile all I know of "what's out there right now".

Either in shortcut menu, or a dedicated icon/link for those who use app launchers (I would use it in TouchFLO or ifonz). There's a cab called AE Wifi Trigger which accomplishes this perfectly. It switches on WIFI, (some people complain "but it notifies you, I don't like notifications"...) and then promptly pops up the wireless networks found in range. Tap it again and it turns wifi off. Honestly, if I were information-designing Windows Mobile, I'd have ditched the Comm Manager long time ago, replacing it with the single function applets that just do what you want without drilling down, then having to select, then having to open settings. For joining a wifi network, that's 4-actions to accomplish what this particular trigger does in 1-tap. (Reminder to self: please refrain from bashing MS)
(k) OperaMini, with that script that opens the javabed and the app built in as the DEFAULT browser. I respect that. installing as a cab works fine anyway, for me. ... But speaking of PCM, I forgot who his "competitor" is for finger-controllable calendar -- the people who make "ThumbCal"... That app now has a fee, right? I do like it, and *some* kind of calendar is essential. Too bad once again MS hasn't done anything to improve theirs in years, if ever.
I so look forward to what you cook up. Thanks for being patient with verbose style. Most of the Herald people tell me to get to the point.
oh, one last thing: Not sure you consider Google Maps essential or not. But about a month ago Google released "My Maps" for their mobile app, replicating most functions of the desktop web version -- but only for Android so far. But this is cool -- The Developer Project Lead for the whole Google Maps line lives in my neighborhood, and she was telling me she was hopeful that people would use the API to port versions of the Android version of "My Maps" to Windows Mobile. I told her about XDA-dev and she was thrilled with the prospect of someone at XDA dev porting it to Windows Mobile. And as a footnote to a footnote, the designer of the G1 phone also is in my neighborhood; he was responsible for the Android user interface as well as aspects of the T-Mobile phone design as well. Just in case anyone reading here is part of the team at XDA seeking to port Android to Wing.
Can't wait!
Sounds great! I will try it! Shure!
P.S.: of course I would like to see a kitchen of this rom Just a Joke!

Once I get the SYS properly ported and the OS 100% stable, I'll start working on the little details. So far, I did replace the dialer for something more stable. The new dialer has a easier "add to contants" on it, too.
That's excellent news! I was wondering where you'd gone, then it hit me. "He went to work on it". that's great re an improved way to "add new contact" from a phone call interface.
Good luck on the project!

Verizon tp2 suggestions

Hi. I should be getting a new verizon touch pro 2 and was wondering what I might be able to expect from it and if you guys could give me some new owner suggestions tips etc.
Thanks alot.
Joe
Be prepared to do a lot of reading if you really want to change things.
I have hosed up the phone several times and had to do hard resets because I installed so much crap that did not work.
Just make sure you search PPC forums and here and makes sure if you try something read up on it first.
What do you mean change things? I don't think I will change anything. At least not right away. Not sure if I'll even like the htc touch pro 2.

What he means is that if you want to reg hack or add any .cab files found here or on ppc geeks do your research first. Even though there are tp2s out there they all differ between cdma and gsm as well as carrier customizations. These differences can screw up your device causing u to loose original functionality or possible bricking your device.
A couple of things to do when you first get your phone:
Do a hard reset when you first turn it on. It will get rid of any errors or bugs you might or might not have. It will not hurt to do it regardless.
Next go to main page of XDA developers website and read the article about disabling push internet. It will free up some memory for you. It works great.
Also, search the XDA forum for the resproxy registry hack or edit or what ever you want to call it. It will also free up and stalblize your memory. you will need total commander to do it, so you will want to search and download then install the program before hand.
Those are the first three things that I would recommend as it made a big difference for me as far as performance is concerned
Thanks alot guys.
I should get it tomorrow and I'm really looking forward to it. I don't think I'll be getting much sleep tonight.
How would I do a hard reset and what is that? Would I do that right after I open it and before doing anything else or right after I activate it?
Yeah. I read something that mentioned push Internet. Kinda sounded like rss. I don't think I would use push Internet.
Will it be possibleto landscape without sliding out the keyboard? Or could someone add this or is it something htc has to do?
How will I upgrade to winmo 6.5 when it's released?
I know I need to learn and read but not sure what and where. I do have the xda wiki bookmarked but couldn't tell what I should look at first.
I don't care about fm radio but will it be possible to have am radio? I would listen to my local baseball team games. I don't listen to the radio now as there's no music I like. So that's why I'm curious about am. Internet radio streaming is of course different story. Is shoutcast available?
I've seen here people talk about gps. What is possible to use that's free? I can't afford vz navigator per month.
I wonder if there are any phone body protectors and screen protectors available at the local verizon store.
If I did change anything will it void my warranty? How does that work? I did add the extended warranty insurance.
Thanks alot.
If you are starting fresh you may want to consider doing this right after you get the phone before doing anything.
This should cover most anything you would need to do including the resproxy and other tweaks.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=84404
Download the Verizon CAB and install it and it takes care of most everything you need done.
To hard reset you just go to SETTINGS>MEMORY TAB> and choose Factory Default. It basically resets the phone to settings of when you first got it.
The Radio as of right now either does not exist on the Verizon phone or is locked out.
The only way to void your warranty is to flash a new ROM, which you can't do yet anyway. But any tweaks you make wont effect warranty.
Streaming internet radio is available and included with the phone, you just need the web address.
Other services like orb from winamp is also handy where you can stream your music collection from home if your PC is on to your phone.
Most anything you can think of you should be able to find, with some searching.
And yes when WM6.5 is released you will have to wait for Verizon to officially release the update.
So even though you will see WM6.5 released next month don't expect Verizon to have the update ready right away it maybe a while.
Well I got my verizon touch pro 2. It's not bad. I hate the browser though. Scrolling sucks and moving around on a zoomed page is terrible when you swipe your finger to go up down etc. The page just keeps going. It's near impossible to touch links to go there. I have to many times just for it to register that I touched a link. Or I have to use the keyboard arrows. It really sucks. You can download files though and this rocks!! I didn't know you could. I got an mp4 and couple other files. Pretty cool.
The ui is ok. I'm surprised how smooth the ui is compared to iPod touch I have which is exactly the same as iPhone minus the phone. So htc did ok here.
I ran the cab installer for disabling push Internet but can't tell anything is different.
So my question now is this.
When winmo 6.5 is released how long might it take verizon to offically release it? Can't I just do the update from Microsoft? I want it as it's supposed to be way more touch friendly.
Why does it violate the warranty if you install a rom? Do any of the toc etc mention this?
Is there a way to do a backup of the phone incase anything goes wrong with a rom or something?
There's a couple things I don't like about that thing you mentioned that would take care of a lot of stuff. The guy disables something I don't want disabled. I forget what it is right now.
Is shoutcast available?
How does the sbp shell thingy work? Like is it just a file you install to change the theme or something? Can you easily install and uninstall without any issues? Same question for the iPhone look GUI.
Will marketplace be available as a widget type of thing or do we know how you go about using it when it's available?
I'm curious also where a good place is to download free themes and apps for the phone?
Is it possible to have free voice gps somehow? There's google maps of course but don't know it. Never used it more then looking at it on my Storm.
This touch pro 2 is supposed to be 3.6" screen but it's not as wide as my storm or iPod touch. How is that possible? I don't understand if it's supposed to be bigger why is it smaller? There should be only 1 way to measure size. This sucks.
how do I make the screen brighter? It doesn't seem as bright as other devices like my iPod touch.
Can I file share with my LAN?
What is remote desktop like? How does the built in one work? Is there something better?
Sorry for bombarding you all with so many questions.
Answers that I have are in BOLD within your quote...

Opera browser takes a little getting used to. Double tap to zoom in, and then you can click links pretty easy. I've been using WinMo phones now since the ATT 8525 (Hermes) and HATED the Opera browser the first time I tried it in a custom ROM. Since then, I've come to prefer it over PIE...just seems more user friendly once you do get used to how it operates - plus, it actually shows websites as desktop sites instead of as mobile sites.
The ui is ok. I'm surprised how smooth the ui is compared to iPod touch I have which is exactly the same as iPhone minus the phone. So htc did ok here.
I ran the cab installer for disabling push Internet but can't tell anything is different. If you don't have any pages set up to push on the web tab, I don't think you'll notice a difference. I could be wrong though.
So my question now is this.
When winmo 6.5 is released how long might it take verizon to offically release it? Can't I just do the update from Microsoft? I want it as it's supposed to be way more touch friendly. The phone is locked through what is called HardSPL to only accept "official" ROMs that are are correctly signed or whatever. MS won't actually issue a ROM for WinMo 6.5 - they'll issue the software to the individual manufacturers like HTC, Samsung, etc. At that time, the manufacturers then have to customize that OS into a ROM that works for the specific device (each device hardware requires specific stuff to function - which is why you can't put a FUZE ROM on a TP2, or a GSM rom on a CDMA phone, etc). Then, the manufacturer has to work with each phone carrier to put in the specific items the carrier wants included or excluded. So you won't ever see an "update" from MS, but only one issued by HTC possibly that won't be compatable with your specific phone until they release one that is authorized by Verizon.
Why does it violate the warranty if you install a rom? Do any of the toc etc mention this? The custom ROM is not officially authorized by your carrier, and requires you to modify the phone software and bootloader to install it. It also may or may not enable components of the phone that are not officially supported by the manufacturer or carrier. Will simply installing the ROM void your warranty - not necessarily. There are ways flash back to the original ROM before sending in for a warranty claim (assuming the phone is not 100% dead/destroyed), but if you make a warranty claim and it is determined that you had a custom ROM installed, they won't stand behind it because you modified the phone from the way they sent it to you.
Is there a way to do a backup of the phone incase anything goes wrong with a rom or something? There are backup programs out there - but you cannot do a "full restore" after changing ROMS because it may overwrite files that are newer or different and mess things up. I personally don't use any backup programs specificially. I keep all my media files on the MicroSD card, keep my emails synced through IMAP (personal account) and Exchange (work account) as well as all my tasks/calendar/contacts in Exchange. I don't have many SMS/MMS messages, so losing them when I reflash is not an issue for me. And I've gotten really good at restoring my settings and programs (which I keep saved on the SD card as well).
AFAIK, the different GUI overlays are simply a matter of "install and reset". I used to use SPB shell on my 8525 and Tilt, but it seemed to be a resource hog (version 2). Since the TF3D GUI on my Fuze and now TP2, I've been happy to simply use it.
Will marketplace be available as a widget type of thing or do we know how you go about using it when it's available?
I'm curious also where a good place is to download free themes and apps for the phone? You've already joined...search here and you'll find links to more places to find goodies for your phone than you'll ever be able to stay on top of.
Is it possible to have free voice gps somehow? There's google maps of course but don't know it. Never used it more then looking at it on my Storm. Don't know about free ones out there. I use Garmin Mobile XT myself - it's not voice command enabled (unfortunately) but does to audible directions and works pretty well. There are others out there too - TomTom, iGo, etc.
This touch pro 2 is supposed to be 3.6" screen but it's not as wide as my storm or iPod touch. How is that possible? I don't understand if it's supposed to be bigger why is it smaller? There should be only 1 way to measure size. This sucks. There is only one way to measure screen size - diagonal from corner to corner. That said, the TP2 is setup in a more HD style wide-screen format than many other devices. So the measured dimension may be bigger than other phones/devices, but the width may be narrower (when looking in Portrait view) because the screen is taller the other way.
how do I make the screen brighter? It doesn't seem as bright as other devices like my iPod touch. Start/Settings/All Settings --> System tab --> Power --> Backlight tab --> uncheck "Auto Adjust" and then you can manually play with the brightness
Can I file share with my LAN? Yes, but not with the stock file explorer I think. I personally use Resco Explorer, but have had a few issues with the network drive mapping locking up this device. Total Commander (free) has the functionality in it as well.
What is remote desktop like? How does the built in one work? Is there something better? I use the built-in RDC just fine. It actually shows a useable desktop image (albeit very tiny). No idea if there are other clients out there...the built-in one has always worked for me.

Well thanks so so much. Truly! I dunno what to say except thanks sooooooo much! I'm kinda speechless.
I have to save those responses locally to turn to incase I need to.
I do like the phone. That's for sure.
In Opera I did zoom right on top of links and tapped the links and it took multiple tries to get it to work I'd say if I had to guess and I am, 7-9 times out of 10. That's terrible. Could it be opera, the screen itself or winmo 6.1 or that I have not run the screen calibration thing? I hope the next browser version works way better and more touch friendly the I am experiencing so far. Oh yeah. It's currently like dial up speed compared to my iPod touch and I'm even using wifi on the phone. But yes, I have read that Opera is very slow. It works at least . Hopefully things will improove in this area in maybe the next version or another browser.
What is it like to install another theme or whatever it is called? The iPhone GUI one and that SPB thing? Are they easy to get rid of? I think I'd like to try them, but am wondering the what if something goes wrong question.
Hmm. I'm not sure where to start now. I should look through this sites wiki, but don't know what parts or where to start. Also I'd like to install some neat apps to see what this phone could do, but not sure where to start.
Thank you so very much! thank you for being patient in answering my questions.
Update. Remote deskto doesn't work. I try to connect via wifi to my vista and remote desktop on the phone imediatly after clicking connect says , the connection was ended because of a network error. Please try connecting to the remote computer again.
Also windows update won't connect either. Same type of message.
Remote desktop works from my other pc and laptop too.
Any ideas?
Ok. Now my phone won't get a connection to the net via wifi and I changed nothing on phone or router. Reboot router and shut off phone doesn't help. I'm on my iPod touch right now just fine. I don't get it.
Thanks a lot guys.
A few small things.
#1 Don't install a bunch of garbage.
#2 The version of Opera on it sucks. The Beta on their site kicks the crap out of it.
#3 Try Skyfire. I don't like the idea of using a proxy browser, but lordy if it isn't useful.
#4 Be patient. I hated both of my previous HTCs until they started releasing ROMs for it.
#5 If you are having troubles with remote desktop, then get VLC. I hate remote desktop because it locks the display and inputs of the host. I use my TP2 as a remote control for my media center. I'd like to find a smarter VLC client though. =(
Enjoy the phone. The WorldCard app is cool as hell.

Try this: http://www.rdmplus.com/
I was using it on my Storm and they allowed me to change to the Windows Mobile version when I finally unloaded that POS. Its a bit pricey but it works well even on a EVDO connection. Works great over wifi. One of the few bright spots in my Blackberry endeavor.

Opera is as slower browser no matter how you shake it. You could try the 9.7.1b version and see if it is any better for you.
I have an iPod Touch 2nd gen and was playing around last night with the TP2 and the iPod. I found that the TP2 was just as responsive as the iPod in almost every task aside from web browsing.
The link clicking in Opera bothers me too. The zoom slider has delay.
I just think it is the application. Good thing is newer versions are coming, and Firefox and IE mobile will have newer versions soon.
You could try Skyfire browser as well. In the end you have options.
A few things:
* Make sure you have a memory card
* Install all your apps to it
* Install the Stop Push Internet.cab
* Install the disable resource proxy .cab
Opera is built into the ROM. So basically it is always running, the stop push internet just stops it from running until you launch it among other things.
Resource proxy is something HTC uses to quick cache things into memory so its always ready to open. Its supposed to make launching last used apps quicker. Everyone finds it not to speed up anything and it just eats up RAM.
After you do those both restart the phone.
As far as your RDP issue with Vista and Win7 you have to make sure you allow connections from all clients and make sure the you add the user account you want to connect with to the remote users under the same tab.
Check your firewall settings in vista and make sure RDP is allowed.
Also try connecting by IP instead of PC name, often more reliable, bypasses the router for name resolution.
Skins and Themes, I make my own wallpapers.
I also don't install anything theme related until I see a thread or a bunch of people with the same phone doing something.
I did the HTC Black upper banner, one file and selectable in the home menu.
I did the standard HTC flip clock because it was verizon tested and made my own wallpaper based on something someone else did. I think mine is better.

Any theme stuff I want to be reversible or selectable without a registry change or 3rd party app that's just me.
As far as apps you have to decide what you want to do on your phone.
If you dont know and just want to start installing things just be prepared to hard reset it if you hose it up with some app that does not play nice.
These are the apps I run. (Everyone has different needs)
S2US Slide to unlock - I turn off every feature of it expect the one to lock when screen goes black. I found the phone was constantly dialing out in my pocket so I had to do it.
Smart Gear Emulator - To play old Nintendo and Genesis games. I tried the demo and at least for Genesis games it sucks. I will probably uninstall.
WVGA Fix - Allows you to change the screen resolution down to 480x480 or 640x480. My old Genesis emulator wont work at 800x480 so I have to switch it to 640x480 before I launch it.
Pico Drive - Genesis Emulator plays most genesis games perfect
XDAShutdown - Just an app that you launch that allows you multiple options, to shutdown or restart. It also has skins to make it look how you want.
GarminXT - I bought it as a NAV application. Works really well on Verizon. And you can copy it to other cards. Maybe be legal but works.
Advanced Config 3.3 - I dont trust it have no need for most of the options in it.
Weather City Editor 2.1 - Did not work, tried it 20 different ways adds more accuweather cities to your weather tab.
Nitrogen - Audio player does not work very well for me, but is good for directly opening audio files from opera
Bing - Live Search
.Net Framework 3.5 - Required for many app installs
Facebook App
Netflix App
MS Font Pack
Microsoft MyPhone - Handy for backing up all your files, SMS and more.
Palringo - Chat client does everything, pretty resource intensive
Midomi Audio Identifier - Play a song or hum a song into the micand it finds the name of the artist and song.
Skype
Flash Hack for Opera - Sucks don't bother, any webpage with flash usually freezes the browser.
Remote Desktop w Vista/7
If you have problems connecting to your vista or 7 machine using the built in RDC program on the phone, you need to change the security level on your computer to:
"Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure)"
WinMo 6 doesn't have the new network level authentication bits. Maybe it'll appear in 6.5.....
Hi. I'm sorry I haven't posted for awhile. I been kinda lazy about posting a foow up. Plus 2 days ago Wednesday I had a tooth extracted on lower left side. So I haven't done much except try to rest, take my tylonol #3 codene and Pennicillan I been taking for a week to fight the infection from my tooth. Not a brushing issue but the tooth first was like cracked on the bottom around the root and then I was eating pizze a few weeks ago a d heard a high pitched pop/crack sound when I took a bite. That hurt like heck. I could not eat or touch it anymore. Went to my dentist and he saw immediatly the top of the tooth had cracked right down the middle. So it looked like a + kinda how it was cracked. So they took it out 2 days ago. I have to ice my left cheek for 30 minutes on, off then on again after every meal and I have to eat soft room temp foods. Plus take my meds. I also try not to talk much and when I move, specially up and down I go slow. My dentist said the healing now will take at least 6 weeks. He will take out the stitches next tuesday or Wednesday. Well that's what's going on with me now.
I have played with the phone a little each day. I have not made a phone call yet. I installed the no push Internet thing and don't notice any difference. Maybe a tiny bit less ram is used now. But I never used much anyway. I installed a few days ago the trial for the SPB 3 shell. It's not bad but I wish every button and window was uniform. Because with touchflo and the spb shell when you file browse or do messaging or certain settings screens you get tiny buttons that are like black and white. Like looking at the memory screen. It's nothing like spb and touch flo. This is annoying that the ui is not uniform the same all over. The spb shell and touchflo are responsive. Yes it does seem with only the web browser is it crummy. I did install yesterday opera 9.7 beta and looked at the local help docs. It was ok but scrolling still sucks major.
If you read what I posted you'll see my remote desktop works on computers just not the phone and that means it's set up already. I think I also already said I typed in the ip of the pc. I did everything right but no matter what remote desktop gives that error immediatly after clicking to connect. So I have no clue. I need to get it working though. Pay remote desktop apps I can't afford.
Why would you install apps only to the sd card? I haven't even put in my unopened 8gb card yet but I will.
The local verizon store said that verizon won't get the htc touch pro 2 in store for a long time. He said that's how htc is. Huh?
How can you make onscreen keyboard same as apples in safari on iPhone/iPod touch? It really sucks. No auto correct and the stupid keys aren't spread enough. Plus the stupid black and white text selection thing that pops up. Landscape really sucks for the keyboard since the keys are way too small a d way to close together. Portrait is much better and easier. The hardware keyboard I thought I liked. That is till I actually tried it. The keys are not spread enough. Way to close and I always have typos and there's no auto correct or auto punctuation or anything even remotely close to the iPod touch. Also there's a delay when typing and the sound sometimes. I like the sound and the vibration feedback when typing.
I wish messaging had add to contact in each message you read. And when you do try to add to contact it doesn't put in any info for you which is really stupid. You have to type in everything. It should auto the name and email address.
while XDA has huge amounts of programs on it, you may end up searching forever. A decent website for programs, themes etc. is http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ just make sure they are capable with the screen resolution (wvga) and some things may not work on the TP2. Also most of the phone forums on xda have some sort of thread that says must have programs or something along those lines. Read a few of those.
btw, WAZE is a community based gps program that has voice directions and is free. its kinda neat, you should give it a look.
Good stuff up there, gang. Some even was helpful to me, after a year with a Crapberry.
I think I am going to like it here.

[App Idea/Request] GPS Video Overlay / Data Logger

Hey, might be a very limited market, but I was wondering if anyone knew, or could code an app that overlays the video camera (or is its own video camera) with GPS information.
In theory it shouldn't be too hard to do, poll the GPS for speed, the compass for direction and stick them at the bottom of a video overlay along with the system date and time on top of the camera, then record the total image/video to the SD card.
I got thinking about this after picking up my car dock and having a play around with it (inadvertently managing to record a drivers eye view of my journey home!). It would be a great app for trackdays etc, you could even output the GPS NMEA data to a KMZ file and import it into google earth, or given some fine tuning make it into a very basic GPS data logger...
Anyways, thinking out loud here If anyone can do it let me know, I can code basic stuff, but something like that is way out of my league...
Cheers
Sounds like a nice application. To take it even further: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgXzdUb_fug I think this is an even greater use of camera + gps.
The only thing about making it into an augmented reality nav system is that it will still require mapping information, and the prob with that is that the free ones have pretty mad amounts of errors, and the paid ones need megabux spending (and they still have loads of errors).
With my idea, it's not an A/R system - it's simply a video overlay of info that's already in the phone. The major problem I see would be polling it, interpreting it, and writing it to the video at 30fps or whatever the unit captures at.
I do like that app tho, but it's not really what I envisaged with this
So you want to record a video similar to this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdAIaIOySoA for afterwards playback only? If so, I think this is possible only to store video + gps information in seperate files. The recorded video will be recorded as a normal video. The gps data can be stored using a kmz file with a sort of timestamp. Afterwards these 2 files can be played back with a application on the android device which reads these two files and overlays the video playback with the data from the kmz file.
I guess it will be to hard to create an application that records video and embeds the recorded gps data into the recorded video. Maybe someone with more knowledge of the android API can say something about this?
yep, got it in one... Although it would be for playback on the PC rather than on the phone.
The standard format is .3GPP, which is nice and small (comparitively speaking) and good quality too, and plays on a PC through Quicktime / VLC no problem.
I honestly think it would be perfectly doable... I just can't do it!!!
It sounds cool, but is it useful? Will anyone actually read the data/time/lat/long on the bottom of the screen during playback?
On top of that it will make the cpu work extra hard putting the text on every video frame.
Another idea is to use the timed-text stream (subtitles) in the mp4 file. (more)
Dont know how much work is involved.
It is a pretty specialist app, however I reckon people would use it for timing laps etc.
Look at how many in-car videos there are of trackdays on YouTube, and the ProVida system that is in use in the video above... there is a definite use for it imho - even if it's just used to show off people's VMAX on the autobahns etc!!
Must admit, I wouldn't see a point in the lat/long info - all I was guessing at was a simple overlay on the video with speed and direction bottom left, date & time bottom right so as not to distract from the actual video.
Hep hep hep
Don't put this idea underground (please). This app could be REALLY interesting for a bunch of freak I know (I'm one of them too :-D)
I'm in a very big forum of EV and there, such video is really really researched. The fact that it has to be processed afterward made by a separate soft is no problem...our main target is to upload a video with speed, altitude...etc for comparison or simple burning thing like "Yeah I've the freakiest e-bike..ever" X-)))
This is interesting for e-bike but also for EVERY (on the road, in the wood...etc) people which are searching performances and want to share them
Hope someone like the idea. If not I make a thread on the endless-sphere forum that the guys come "show their motiviation" here
Cheeeeers and do it ;-)
Grüß,
H.
A lot of people have been waiting for this for a long time, but I don't think its possible on android yet.
Lets hope it will be on 3.0.
A friend said that one guy will release a update to his track logging app, for the iphone 4 within a few days that will add this functionality.

[APP] MobileWebCam (2G/3G/WIFI, no PC or UMTS router required!) v3.13

There are a lot of fine webcam (with video!) apps in the Market. But I found none which can be used with just a phone without any computer or wifi connection and placed in your car, weekend home, garage, ... to upload pictures to a server in defined refresh times. So I built this app. It is not finished but good enough for a lot of things.
For easy setup with a nice user interface have a look at sensr.net - they offer camera webspace and the ftp setup with MobileWebCam is very easy. For even more possibilities like gallery-hosting, hardware motion detection and housing have a look at opensmartcam.com ... they even sell or rent complete cameras based on MobileWebCam.
Edit: The app can now also automaticilly email the pics, upload to ftp or simply store them on sdcard. Also a manual mode is new for when you are running around taking pictures to be uploaded to your website/email account on the go with one simple tap.
Dropbox usage also possible now!
Invisible Background mode available now to save power or hide the cam. Autofocus can now be used in and the camera can be remote-controlled by sending SMS commands to your phone.
I will use this with an old phone with broken touch input (but luckily a dpad) and a simple free sim card wich has 30MB data traffic free/month (don't know if providers in other countries offer something like that). So I can have about 20 picture refreshes a day at a location with no WIFI or 3G (and of course no cable/dsl/...). FOR FREE! In the App activity times can be set so no black night views. No WIFI needed, just power to keep the phone running (I wonder how long it will last .
Also I use this with my main phone to quickly show my wife the kids playing on the playground, watch the garden when I am working inside and stuff like that. For this use case an email notification can be sent containing a link for her to view on her phone or pc at work.
Should run on Android 1.5 up (what causes the camera options to be very few and landscape mode only). So you can buy a somewhat broken phone on ebay (speakers not needed, display doesn't have to work well, ...) and have one of the easiest and cheapest webcam setups possible (I think ...
For your personal website webcam you need a php capable server somewhere where the picture can be refreshed. There you have to place the two files (mobilewebcam.php and index.html) attached to this post. Since version 1.3 you can also sent the pictures to an email account or simply store them on sdcard. From version 1.6 on ftp upload is also possible.
This also can be combined with my WebLiveWallpaper App easily and your webcam is then visible on your homescreen background all day.
I have uploaded my webserver files for a simple gallery and timelapse video on a google code project: please let me know if you can improve it!
Most of the sourcecode can now be found at http://code.google.com/p/mobilewebcam-android/ ... so if you need special stuff simply add it yourself and publish your changes! Please help me fix all the bugs and send me a notice if you repaired or improved something. There is so much crappy hacked code in there ...

Edit: version 2.73: custom font and typeface added to imprint settings, crash fix for opensmartcam reg error
Edit: version 2.7: Welcome screen, remote control website (see config.zip), 2.71 fixes the original size picture upload if not enough memory
Edit: version 2.64: Nexus 7 frontcam only devices work now
Edit: version 2.63: dropbox authentication method changed to web
Edit: version 2.61: flashlight toggle 2.62 Actionbar for Android > 3.0
Edit: version 2.52: custom picture sizes (+fix from 2.51)
Edit: version 2.37: started to experiment with photo effects like instagram
Edit: version 2.36: webserver (wifi only) now also streams mjpeg, ...
Edit: version 2.3: integrated simple webserver (wifi only), added gps location to make interesting moving cameras, ...
Edit: version 2.2: two different background modes (depends on device, no advanced features working in hidden mode but less power)
Awesome! Thanks for sharing this, check the XDA portal some time this weekend, wrote up this app for the front page
Hey miha:
Though you'd need to tweak this to create random directories or accounts or whatever, I've got a pretty heavy duty Linux server with a fat pipe I'd be willing to let you tie your program into so people don't have to have their own server. Think it over, let me know.

Sounds great! Thank you! I already thought about using my little webspace and allow only one refresh a day or so to enable people to try the app but that will be so much better! I will think about the identification/account - may be best the server creates them and my app just asks for a new user - and come back to you when I have got a little more time to put that into the app.
Is there a how to.. i can't get this to work correctly.. i always got "something went wrong"
EDIT: Works.. just my firewall was disabling the connection.
You just brought mine Milestone with no screen(lucily i can control the phone via adb/screencast) back from the closet and in my courtyard! Will test it well
Works pretty well. Got it set up in about 15 minutes on an old G1 and my TDRevolution VPS.
Status Error Copying every time..
am I missing something? permissions?
I am running latest apache and PHP and firewall is allowing connections to port 80
testing on local network
whats wrong?
For those who are having issues, make sure that the web server (Apache) has write permissions to the folder that this is in.

that did it
chowned html dir and all good now
works great, both the android part and the server part.
What might be great:
-resolution selection - when Im no wifi it could potentially upload higher resolution
-it should be possible to turn off those popus regarding uploaded picture
Very nice App, just a small thought:
Your php script does not check for any attribute other than if there is a filename on the uploaded file.
So everyone who knows the URL to your "mobilewebcam.php" can upload anything to your server which is a major security flaw.
Just think about those nifty little php-shells to get complete control of it and steal stuff like databases, not to mention illegal stuff fileshared via your server...
All you need for this is a (really) simple html-file with a file-upload form in it which targets your "mobilewebcam.php" file.
Your script should have some filesize-limit and allow no other file formats than *.jpg (also not something like x.jpg.php).

some design thoughts
I had an idea similar to this, just haven't had time to start developing anything... here were some of my design thoughts:
--motion detection to webcam device
--audio detection to webcam device
--accessible via android app (not just a php webpage)
--add notifications to android app for motion/audio detection events
--support for multiple webcam devices
The server requirement seems ok - it allows for a single point of integration for both clients and webcam devices. It could also provide a way around firewalls if the server could be deployed to a public ip.
Thank you for your comments! Will try to answer all in one post:

Resolution selection will be added next, yes. May be at first only a checkbox for small/large because I can do that quickly (my time for this app is soo limited - I want to make the other one fine first).
The popups already do not show up when refreshing very fast but yes, a checkbox for that is done faster than typing this so I will add it

Yes I know! You are totally right! That is why I put these "please understand first" texts in the market description. But supplying a more complicated php file will only make understanding of it more difficult. I added a comment to the market desciption now. My php file is only the very basic needed code to get it running. Do you want to make me a better/safer one? I can then link to it in the description! English isn't for me also

Motion and audio detection would be possible (not too difficulty I think) from preview picture and mic but at the moment I really do not have enough time for that - I would love to!
Remote control also is a feature I would like (I would personally use it for my weekend home cam!) but I didn't come up with an easy way to communicate with the phone.
An Android app to access the webcam IS there: it's my other app (ignoring the old games) WebLiveWallpaper which also contains an App to view stuff like a picture frame and may even get a widget for this later.
The php server posted picture is the only way to make it work on many mobile providers because as far as I know there is no way for the phone to get an easily public accessible ip. Also it is the easiest way to make you webcam visible for more than a mobile bandwidth limited number of viewers.
Thank you for reading,
Michael
Edit: updated apk with larger image size and no messages is in first post
can i use it as streaming ?? please say yes awesome work
Edi: if not streaming then some software that will refresh the jpg every 5 sec or so
Edit2: it tunrs out the script is hanging on the loading part i dont know whats wrong but it isnt reloading as its supposed to be maybe a server issue ?

Unfortunately I have to say no. Only very fast refresh if you set the refresh time to 0 and your device and server are fast enough to handle all the picture uploads.
I am not sure real streaming could be done with simple php. Maybe MJPG? But then a "constant" connection between server and app would be required which is somehow against the whole idea of this APP to be a lowcost/lowbandwidth mobile solution.
For real streaming I recommend IP Webcam and others from the market (but they will not work with most mobile providers as far as I know).
Edit: Future ideas ... It would be possible with to generate an mjpg with the server php and make it available to the watchers with a time delay - so then you have some kind of from time to time (switch to next mjpg) broken streaming (and require a lot of server power/bandwidth) with the image uploads of a camera like my app. Just an idea I will not implement - at least not now - but someone else could. One part is already done here!
thanks man i hope you add a streaming app that would be epic awesomeness
i tried to set it to 0 but lol its taking pictures but not uploading because the app is meant to take pic and then it will be uploaded it because its 0 sec it cant handle the capture and upload at the same time it needs sync
i will try this app..thank you
everything works fine. I have the ownership of the folder too. it did uploaded the picture
BUT I cant view the picture from both index.html or when I double clicked the pic file. it says I dont have the permission to view this pic but when I check the owner it was me. that is so strange.

Is it possible that you also have to give it everyone view rights to be able to view it in the browser not just yours which the browser doesn't use/know? Or did I get the problem wrong?

HTC Status\ChaCha First Impressions

Anyone else got the ChaCha yet?
Picked one up for my wife yesterday and I have to say I'm quite impressed. Solid build, nice weight, quite speedy too.
Has the Sense 3.0 lockscreen with shortcuts. No Weather\Stocks\Friendstream on the lockscreen though, just a background.
Also comes with a HTC version of Facebook chat, seems ok but can just use the inbuilt chat in the facebook app if you prefer.
Facebook integration is pretty tight, the same as with the other HTC Sense handsets. The Facebook button is quite handy and cool for uploading photos to facebook.
Will update further once we've played with it a bit more
yes
just bought one for myself as I need a keyboard (white/silver)
basically screen looks like wildfire S. very sharp
keyboard is excellent
and surprised there is forward facing camera and radio
signal quality is good and phone quality is good
even the charger is white
very nice so far
please keep updates coming
Thanks both - please keep updating us on your experiences
can't wait to play with my htc chacha..i do expecte to have it delivered by royal mail in 1 week.
ChaCha is nice!
I had same feeling. ChaCha is nice. I did not expect the keyboard is so good.
I installed Morelocale2 for Japanese use.
Japanese font is installed, and Open Wnn worked smoothly with the hardware keyboard.
It may replace my Blackberry Torch.
Further usage continues positive impressions.
Personally I wouldn't have bothered with the camber in the middle for aesthetic reasons. However for ergonomic purposes it is positive, in that it puts the screen at a better viewing angle when holding it and also wraps to your ear more nicely when making calls.
I would also have made the facebook button a more general assignable button, perhaps that will come with software
Its nice to have real "make" and "cancel" call buttons. This is always much better for people using their phones to actually make calls but seems to have been dropped on virtually all new iOS, Android and WP7 touch smartphones now.
For folk who thing this is a generic Android implementation, its not, its been tweaked alot for a landscape screen. HTC have obviously thought about how the device will be used and it has lessons learned from the excellent S620 and SNAP.
As well as sense and the display being optimised for landscape, window 1 is now the furthest left of the horzontal scroll (to go to different windows). I prefer this over the standard Android where extra windows are to the left and the right of the main windows.
Marketplace is also adapted for the size of the screen and landscape.
Note that by default, the web browser and other apps hides the status line on the top. thisis a good thing, as its a waste of space (maybe learnt from WP7 which has the perfect hidding of status symbols from permanent display !!!).
So far can continue to confirm that all radios (bluetooth, wifi and 3G) work well and calls are clear. Data also seems to be fine, marginally ahead of my Desire S in terms of keeping the signal (perhaps this is an illusion).
There IS an accelerometer, but most built-in apps seem to ignore it. e.g. the web browser does not go to portrait if you tilt the screen. It also seems that the orientation for portrait is not currently picked up by most market place apps/games. i.e. install "sky ball". You will see that to control the running ball you need to tilt left and right, but on the ChaCha, you need to tilt back and front. Clearly the game is not playable like this.
On the subject of "auto-rotate" screen, I have just found an option in the display settings called "auto rotate screen - after market downloaded applications"
I can confirm when ticking this box, most of my downloaded applications auto-rotate when I turn the phone. however this does not effect built in applications (e.g. mail, web browser, etc.)
some other things to note:
1. Chacha has 800mhz new design cpu (faster then 600mhz one in salsa and wildfire S)
2. Chacha does have an FM radio (bizzarely many previews on the internet say it hasn't)
3. The camera is 5mp with face detection and flash.
4. Note that with the latest version of Android (on the ChaCha - 2.3.3) you can move most applications you install from the marketplace to the SD card. so internal memory is not really an issue.
Lastly the keyboard is nice to use. Each key is spaced nicely and has a positive click

MANY thanks my friend - great info!
Where in London did you buy it from? I'm thinking of picking it up at the Carphone Warehouse sim-free today (8 June)
Do you find the screen is too small? The chacha resolution is better than other similar phones such as Samsung Galaxy Pro and Acer Betouch E210 (I returned the Acer cause I found it hard to read web pages etc on its resolution).
How is the battery life? Do you think it'll last a day?
Sorry for all questions!

I bought from carphonewarehouse simfree on cheapside it was £229
The battery seems the same as the Desire S. i.e. 2 days if you don't use, 1-1.5 days if you get email & browse
The screen is small (2.6"). I bought this over the samsung galaxy pro due to the 480x320 resolution. Its a sacrifice for this type of device, however the resolution is fine (same as HTC Legend, etc.)
Hi All,
My wife has noticed an annoying bug, can someone check for us to see if it s common bug or just our very own
When typing in Gtalk or SMS and a smiley is used, it can turn blue, enlarge a little and stay on the screen with no way to get it off (reboot phone)
anyone else seen this? I haven't done any of the obvious things yet such as uninstall Gtalk and re-install or do a factory reset

Ah right - Not sure about the SMS just what she told me over the phone. I've walked her through a factory reset and all seems OK at the moment. If it returns I'll uninstall Gtalk and put it back on.
