Flashing the ROM - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Themes and Apps

can someone post a good "how to flash a ROM" for beginners?
i looked in the ROM Development thread and read a bunch but can't seem to get familiar with all the terms.
anyway, i tried installing an HSPL, before flashing the ROM, and it said "Bad ID version".
now what?
and are these ROMs really worth it?
thanks

Just follow the instructions here...
And yes, custom ROMs are definitely worth the small effort, if you ask me.
But, if you´re fine with the stock ROM, you might consider keeping it...

The Noob Flashing Tut is as good as it gets. There is however also a video version if you really can't make head or tail of it and if that's the case I'd question as to whether you should be flashing in the first place. The HD2 is an expensive device to be doing things with that you are familiar with. It is a relatively simple process however and often sounds a lot harder than it really is. Just follow the steps and they really are Foolproof. If you got a Bad ID version error that means that the hspl version you tried is not the right one for your device.
This thread is in the wrong space and if you want help, ask your questions in the Flashing guide thread.

CID Unlocking with new ROMS

Quick (and maybe stupid) question from a newbie:
I have been looking around and reading all the threads about flashing new roms and I have one final question before I start.
After I flash a new ROM, do I have to go through ALL the steps again to flash a new Rom, (like flash it with the button ROM and then the T-Mobile Rom) or can I just flash a brand new ROM. Or does it depend on the ROM's themselves?
Anyway, I would like to thank everyone who posted all this great help on here, its VERY helpful and easy for anyone to understand.

Your question all depends on what you are flashing. Do you have a G3 or G4? If you have a G3, then once it's unlocked, you can flash away to your hearts content. No need to worry about downgrading or flashing extroms or IPL/SPL issues. However if you have a G4, if it's unlocked, you can flash anything you want (just be sure you're not flashing anyything with an extrom or IPL/SPL).

Im getting a little frustrated that people is too lazy to ready and research for its own.
Surf into the forum, do some research, this kind of question has been already answered in every thread of the forum. Oh my... no offense, believe me but please do some research.
Best regards.
Yeah, sorry, found it after I posted, it was actually on a thread about a specific ROM. Thanks TaurusBullba for the quick reply. Oh, and my 8125 is G3 and I just flashed AKU3.3 to it, works pretty good, but I'm already itching for something new.

You did the right thing by asking. Better to look like an idiot with a working Wizard than be a silent fool with a brick, right. Good luck on your journey. There are a lot of ROM's out here right now. Choose wisely.
BTW, welcome aboard.
Thanks, jwzg, right now I'm searching around trying to find info on making (or cooking, i guess) my own ROMS. There are so many great ones out there, but I have also loved customizing things myself. Thanks again everyone, your all very helpful around here.

There are tons of people that are willing to help you, but you really can learn the most through reading and posting more specific questions you have. There are step by step instructions to flashing new ROMs and installing programs in stickied posts, and there are tons of ROM options available.

I would like to personally thank "ajmoncrief" for taking the time to treat this new comer with respect and to make an effort to teach him. I see a lot of people get flamed for asking simple questions, and in some respect some of them need to be flamed because they don't read or ask the same question that was asked in a post just up the page. But this guy is reached out to ask and you took the time to teach , you are a credit to this forum. and I thank you.

I second that Ed!
If you are still uncertain after reading up & studying, then feel free to contact me via PM @ ([email protected]). Donations are nice, but not required.
And thanks to you edbutler; no sweat...we were all noobs at one time. If you are still unclear after reading then yeah I'm sure you will find plenty of help in the forums, just remember to search for it first. My .02 is that sleuth's rom is is a pretty good start.

One other piece of information that may or may not be in the wiki is if you have a choice of flashing between a laptop and a desktop as your pc...I would highly recommend a charged laptop since you will protect yourself from power outages (especially in the critical step of flashing HardSPL). Other than that, its pretty simple and relatively enjoyable to customize your device to your own liking.

The 10 Commandments For The SGS4G Forum

This is just a quick list of things I thought would be helpful to Noobs/Newbs. They're not in any particular order. Also, sticky if need be or just leave as is. Sticky would be preferred though so Noobs/Newbs can see it right away. Anyway, here are what I feel should be the 10 Commandments for the SGS4G Forum. You may agree or you may not. Think what you will. If you feel anything should be added, PM me and I'll make the changes myself. Thank you.
#1 - Search The Forum Before Asking Questions.
Unless you like getting flamed by people when you don't search before asking.
#2 - DON'T USE ROM MANAGER ON SGS4G EVER!!!!!!
Unless you really like ODIN that much.
#3 - DON'T TRY TO FLASH ANY ROMS OUTSIDE OF THE SGS4G FORUM
Unless you wanted a nice brick instead of a phone.
#4 - Read the "[Guide] *NOOB's* guide to flashing " Thread In The General Section Before Trying To Flash Anything.
You'll eventually get pointed to that direction anyway if you don't read it. Trust me, we can tell when people don't.
#5 - Read The Instructions For The ROM Before Installing.
Unless you really like reflashing or reverting back to STOCK. HELLO ODIN AGAIN.
#6 - When You Have A Problem With A ROM, Be Descriptive About The Issue.
Believe it or not, the Devs here can't read minds nor can they see over your shoulder to see what your issue is on your phone. They're good, but not that good.
#7 - Be Thankful Towards Our Devs.
If you like a ROM, show your appreciation. If not, then keep your mouth shut and use a different ROM or better yet go back to STOCK. ONCE AGAIN, HELLO ODIN.
#8 - POST IN THE RIGHT SECTION!!!!
Prepare to get flamed if you don't.
#9 - When Flashing From Froyo To GB, Follow FBis251's "[ODIN+CWM] GB Ext4 Starter Pack (Sep 27)" Thread or use the updated Kies Mini to upgrade to official KJ6.
If not, then yet again, HELLO ODIN.
#10 - For The Love Of Our Forum, Don't Ask A Dev For An ETA!!!!!
You'll only get one answer if you do. WHEN IT'S DONE!!!
Going to add one more thing until we actually get it for our phone.
#11 - If You're Coming From Another Device, Don't Come In Here Thinking You Can Get CM7 For The SGS4G.
This goes along with #3 in a way. Its being worked on. Now that we have the kernel source for GB, we are now one step closer. So, until the devs figure everything out with the source to get CM7 working, IT CAN NOT BE INSTALLED!!!
Now if you're wondering, "What is ODIN?" well, there's a guide for that...
[GUIDE] Noobs guide to Odin to flash your SGS4G (Windows)
Like I said, feel free to PM me if you feel something should be added.
Not bad.. I'd also add the noob's guide to ODIN, and put up a link to the Bible thread to find every ROM, guide, Kernel, modem, etc that's been put up in the dev section.
Nice Work Thanks
Deserves a Sticky
Nice list, glad to see it stickied.....hopefully it will cut down on the repetitive questions that have been plaguing the threads lately.

You're the best kind of new user, the one who reads and tries to keep informed. I'll be glad to help if you have any questions.
well im glad its not overlooked
So, I think "Do NOT necro threads" should be added here. I'm seeing that a lot recently. It's just ridiculous.
I think that is general forum etiquette, not much SGS4G specific.
Updated #9 since we now have an official GB Upgrade. Will be taking #11 off as soon as we get new kernel working to run CM7.
Nice laws. I made the rom manager mistake when I was a noob. Seemed like the easiest way to go, until my phone wouldn't boot.
has anyone figured out why rom manager cannot be used...and if so what are proposed solutions
hey guys could you please direct me to the link on how to totally start over fresh.. basically if i want to do a complete wipe and start over on my phone ive got the kj6 version.. i think its probably a good idea for me to familiarize myself with it now thanks..

Look up Raver's Odin KJ6 rom. It'll leave your phone as if you had just downloaded the Kies official update.
Thanks alot... I've just been putting particular things on my phone.. Checked out and installed a few roms... I've read on some of these threads about ghost roms and other issues just want to make sure ive got my bases covered.. Thanks again..

Thanks for this thread. Took me over a week to wade through and find this starting point. I just rooted my phone and have been nervous about flashing a rom with all the different ways posted on how to go about it.

[Q] SGS4G

Okay, Let me start by saying two things. Yes I'm new to this. And yes I looked in the forums for something similar.
Now, basically I just recently rooted my Samsung Galaxy S 4G. It is Model SGH-T959V, Firmware 2.2.1, Baseband T959VUVKB5, Build FROYO.VUVKB5. There are a few things I was wanting to ask the community.
Is it possible or a good idea to update it to JB, ICS, GB. And if so what are the benefits and procedures to do so?
Secondly, I've been looking into getting some custom roms. So far the only things I have found haven't been comprehensible. They either require a higher firmware version, have no explanation as to what the rom does, or have highly technical steps which are way beyond me. Does anyone have any recommendations as to what would be some good roms? What they do? And the benefits of using them?
If this has all been discussed somewhere else and have just missed it, please feel free to link to the thread and close this one.
ok i see you are new to the concept of flashing and rooting ....etc) you should try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1001759

First, you should start here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1470716 Second here http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959V now you have all the source of instructions and guides to follow all you have to do is take some time to read and search. and now good luck to you and your phone..
Well, as for the Odin thing a lot of people have said it can brick your device, and that's not something wanna do.
As for the other guides, I started it, I got to the point where I'm updated to GB 2.3.6. The rest of the stuff didnt say what it was for, so I was unsure as whether or not to proceed. Are they required for flashing ROMs? Or just extra stuff?
The last one didn't seem to have anything really useful, but I didnt look at every last thing.
And what about useful ROMs? I've looked around online and a lot people recommend Cyanogenmod, although no one has said what it does. I looked at the steps and it seemed over complicated to install for someone new to this stuff.

In this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959V it will guide you to rest of Custom rom's and kernel's that you must need to use in order to
start flashing custom rom and kernels. the rest is a guide which you can use and it will save you'r time from looking around.. The only rom which is very much stable to our phone are
GB and ICS while Cyanogenmod 10/10.1 are still in Alpha and beta stage..
Yeah, I saw that as I looked through it more. Just a lot of it is way over my head so it's gonna take me a while to get to it
That's right, you will never get lost by following that guide because everything you need to know are already in there.. just take some time to read and you
will be enlightened as you go on the process..
Well, my biggest problem is I keep looking for useful and cool ROMs, but haven't found any so far. So at the moment I can justify to myself to go through all those things just to not have anything to put on it. So far I like the GB look and feel much better than FROYO. I've found a few minor apps here and there, but so far nothing that has required flashing.
Or you can check some of the great ICS rom's we have, here i am going to provide some links of it for you.

of the great rom's courtesy of our great dev's..
Cool, I'll check out those GB ones. Thanx
Good luck and make sure to follow as per OP's instruction of flashing the respective rom's to avoid further problem, u won't get lost as every instructions are provided
for the ease of use and flashing.. and take some time to each and every rom you flash so that you can personally experience the goodness and you can make a choice which rom you think it's best for you..

Yes an other noob questions

...
If your phone model isn't listed as an option, don't install that ROM. It will be the end of your phone. If you visit the Skyrocket Q&A forum and the dev forum for, well, any phone, there are loads of tutorials on how to flash safely. Please read them first and follow their instructions, along with the ROM instructions, or brick.
Unless you want to prove how 1337 you are. Then, by all means, install the ROM and prove us wrong.

Yea definitely seems like a better idea to follow the instructions for the specif ROM. Any recommendations on one? not looking for anything fancy just wanna get rid of the stock one and because for some reason my phone is currently on version 2.3.5 and i am not being able to install anything from the marketplace. so any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Read the Skyrocket dev forum and decide for yourself. Recommending a ROM would be an insult to all the other devs who've put time, effort and sometimes money into designing their own.
im sorry i am just going nuts now with all the stuff ive been reading and i think i gotta take some steps back to make sure i got everything right.
i have clockworkmod 5. something and from what i was able to read i need the to update to the most resent version. So i found a copy of 6.0.4.5 but i am unsure on how to update it. Tried to put it in my sd and run it by booting into clockwormod recovery and installing the zip. it says it installed successfully but it is still in version 5.
Any help with the would be much appreciated
