Hi,
Here is my new DIY Nexus One car holder I just put together:
The base is from Garmin nüvi 200 series and the holder for phone is just plain hard shell I bought very cheap from eBay.
What do you think?

Curious how it holds up in the car, but looks pretty good and low profile.

It looks great and slim also holds phone quite well.
Here are few photos in 'action' (sorry for the mess in my garage):
That looks really good. Much better than my "universal" POS that wobbles and rattles and occaisonally drops my phone:

Can you link to the case you bought (or a similar one) please?
And where did you get the base? Was it a spare you had?

I'm new user and I am not permitted to post outside links.
For case just search for 'BLACK HYBRID HARD BACK CASE FOR HTC GOOGLE NEXUS ONE' on UK eBay.
For base search 'GARMIN NUVI WIDESCREEN MOUNT FOR 200, 200T, 200W & MORE' - you will get several results from Hong Kong - they are very cheap.
I've attached photo of this mount.
You just have to cut off two horns on Garmin cradle and stick it on case with some thin mirror bond sticky pads.
Hope this is not too confusing.
Not confusing at all. You've made the whole thing very clear, in fact!
Thank you for the info. I'll be making mine very soon!
WOW BRILLIANT IDEA. JUST ORDERED THE PARTS. Do you think it's better to use superglue instead of mirror adhesive?

Thanks. I'm glad you like it.
I think superglue will also works but I put mirror tape for future considerations - it will be easier to remove tape and change shell case when I change phone.

lol you're always one step ahead of me. Thanks for the idea
Haha I have the exact same holder and a very similar case and I was trying to come up with a way to make them work together. I hadn't considered getting another case and then modifying the garmin holder. I'll be doing this as well!
Rinegpeace, can you please give some comment about the quality of the back case? How thin is it? rubbery on the inside/outside? Would you feel comfortable using the phone with the case on all the time?
Thanks in advance!

For everyday use I would pick little harder case. This one is thin and it is very easy to pull phone in and out. This is preferable for car dock but for real case it is maybe too flexible.
After couple days of testing I feel very secure about holding my N1 while driving and even if you turn this dock upside down it will hold your phone in the cradle. So, maybe you will like it as everyday case.
Here is one short video of detaching and attaching my N1 in this car dock:

that's awesome, thanks mate!
You can also get the air vent mount for the nuvi instead of the suction mount. I kinda don't want it to stick to glass so this is nice.
what are those mirror adhesive pads? buy them at home depot?

You'd be better off finding them at an automotive store or maybe walmart if they are to repair a rear view mirror that fell off inside a car as I'm suspecting.
This has been featured in Lifehacker some weeks ago, with the same materials... the idea was from a OcUK user.
I've already made one myself for my HTC Legend and it looks great, it was cheap, and it's really sturdy.
Is it me or does the first photo in the original post look like it has a windows logo!?!
This is a great idea. I just finished it for my Touch Pro 2 with no problems. I hvae a slight difference though. I cut the very top off of the silicon case so that my tp2 can slid in and out with ease. Although there is plenty of friction to keep it in normally.
I just wanna say that after 2 days of using this in my car it is just working absolutely perfectly. The easy rotation is very convenient and it looks really good as well, being so form fitting to my phone.
Now that is cool.
I shall be getting the bits this week.
I haven't seen any posts for DHD in regards to this and since this barnd is the most advertised and most positive-commented, I'd like to add my negative comments so that everyone is aware.
First of all, before I bought it, I've read the best comments about it as being the best choice. For me, it was the worst product I could buy and at such a high price which cannot be explained. This is why:
1) Hard to slide in and once in its place, the phone is so firmly fixed in the holder that you need tools to remove it. I always end up fighting with it to get out and the result is that always the sim cover gets off and stays fixed in the holder. The sides of the phone also start showing wear/scratch signs. This is the most unacceptable problem for a priduct of that price.
2) The provided proclip (special mount for specific car model) for one of my cars doesn't stay fixed on my car. It is so long and so thin and its corners are so badly aligned that even the adhesives don't come in contact with the console plastic and each time I try to take my phone off the holder, the whole mount comes off. With my other car for which the mount is smaller, it's ok bad still unacceptable for the price I paid overall.
Having read this, don't buy this product.
Thats a pity; I've been using a generic suction-cup mount in my car but was planning on purchasing a Brodit as I'd had no problems with the previous one I had for my Touch Pro 2.
I had a similar problem with the car mount half of it; it was supposed to mount over the air vent but would 'slip-off' if you hit a bump on the road. I fixed this with a heat gun, bending the mount to give it a firmer grip.
If the Brodit mount is a bad idea for the Desire HD, can anyone recommend a better option for the car than a clunky generic plastic lump I've got attached to my windscreen?
I bought a Brodit Active Holder for my DHD and I've had no problems fitting and removing the phone from it. If anything, when I slot the phone into place, there is a bit of a gap between the bottom of the phone and the holder so you can see part of the cable connector has not fully gone into the phone. Still charges though, just looks a bit irritating.
Other than that Im pleased with it, no fit or removal problems whatsoever

Where have you bought it from? because I received a message today from the Swedish manufacturer who admit this as a problem with some of their stock.

Sorry to hear that, you were unlucky. I bought mine off eBay Uk last week. It was a Uk seller called drivesafeandlegal2. I dont have enough posts to post a link unfortunately. I done a search under 'brodit desire hd'
Free delivery and package arrived in a couple of days.
For those who bought the Brodit carholder and its to tide ( like antenna cover gets stuck) you can solve it.
Take sandpaper with a very tiny grain and start sanding the edges of the sides. Make the sharp edges round and sand it with some water so that the surface and edges gets smooth ( even more smooth then original).
After this is done you don't see a difference in color or you don't mess up your holder as long the sandpaper is a P400 or lower and apply water in the end.
Mine looks like new and phone slides in without pushing until it reach the usb port.
No fuss with antenna cover and much more safe scratching your phone.
I have the Nexus 4 with the bumper case and It wont fit my current phone mount from my LG G2X. I need a mount that can do around 5 incs of phone.

? I need something that will hold the phone where I can see it for GPS and music selection while I'm driving.
A lot of people think I'm crazy for sticking something on my phone but I seriously LOVE this thing I bought ( http://www.steelie.com/)
So you pretty much put tiny dongle on the back of your phone, which sticks due to a strong adhesive and that dongle has a magnet that attaches to a ball you can stick on your car too.
I've had for awhile on my SGSII and when I removed it, it came off with no sticky residue or anything! Once I get a back screen protector for my nexus 4 I'm sticking it on there as well.
Here's a picture of my car with the car ball. http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/8111732688/in/pool-steelie
and here's another http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/8111732114/in/pool-steelie/
It's awesome because I literally walk in my car, scan the NFC sticker and stick it on the ball. SNAP on. It's adjustable since its a ball you can move it around.
The only downside was the price. It's a bit expensive but seriously, I cannot have chosen a better product.
I feel like I'm an advert for them but seriously. It's awesome. Watch their youtube video! They started from kickstarter too (random tidbit)
Two downsides .. price and this thing on the back of your phone.

Not to mention it makes me want to check everything in my household if they are metal so I can stick it on it

Have you thought about attaching that magnet to the back of a case and placing the nfc tag inside where the back of the phone would be?
It would be a good way to keep the back of the phone clean and still have a way to attach it to your car.
Steelie looks really cool, but it's quite pricey for what it is. I'd mount the phone ring on a case rather than right on the back.

That's how I had it on my SGSII, attached it to a TPU case. It worked pretty good too but the back is so nice on the nexus4 that I didn't want to cover it entirely so I was gunning for a bumper+backscreen protector.
Either way the phone attachment comes off readily with no residue issue when it comes to it

Yes, this exactly. I want an inductive charging mount.
The steelie looks interesting, but would probably render the induction charging useless. I wonder if the large magnet on the back would fight with the induction current from the charger base?

It is. I just sold my SGSII and phone socket is sitting on my desk until I apply it on my Nexus 4. They give you lifetime replacements for the sticky part that goes on the back of the phone socket, so I had them send me a new one for free.
All I need is my back screen protector and my bumper until I apply it back on
I'm using an Arkon MG114. It was cheap and does the trick. I miss my GSII t989 car dock. I don't have the bumper on my phone yet, though I think it would work.
Recommend the best car mount here for Galaxy S 5.
A bit more expensive, but the CraigsDocks Dock is billet aluminum and low-profile and is true one-hand operation and adjustable to work with S2, S3, S4, Note series and now the S5.
http://www.craigsdocks.com/samsung-galaxy-s3-s4-note-2-3-car-dock/
I've had mine a year and won't have to buy a new one when I upgrade to the S5 because it fits all large Samsung superphones.
It's also adjustable to work with ALL cases, including the extra large cases that have built-in batteries.

The air dock is what ultimately tipped the balance for me getting an S5, after seeing it I knew built-in Qi charging was a must have and since Sprint only offers the Nexus 5 in 16GB flavor (not nearly enough, I've got 15GB of stuff on my SD card today which easily exceeds the 12GB formatted capacity, not to mention 2 years from now).
Hope they will make something like this one :

Another vote for Craigsdocks. Absolutely the most adaptable car dock out there. Very well designed and crafted. Well worth the the cost.

It looks nice but the expense of it, $70 +20 for the charging coil, then still need a car charger so there's another $30(for an OEM)its a lot of money.
I got one of these a while back and its quite good, just make sure to hold the back of the phone whilst removing or sometimes the back cover comes lose on a clip or two with S4, the magnetism is quite strong.

Because its so hard to plug in USB lol, is it really worth an extra $75? Also there's no way that thing could output 2A so charging is going to be much slower, just my opinion.

notice my cd changer is curved out but the rubber "fins" still fit snug and very sturdy. They are rubber and do no damage. if for some reason it just will not fit in there on your car model, you can always send it back worry free (with Prime) but it shouldn't be a problem. the grip has a light rubber pad and is controlled by a spring action adjustment. I love it because i can easily place my phone into it by pushing my phone up and in. I take it out with the same motion, press up and pull out. it is made in Korea and the material and parts are very well made.
I really don't know why some of the people here are buying 50-70 dollar suction phone mounts. that is a total rip off.

I ordered a similar one, well basically identical, and it fits superbly in my 2008 honda accord exl. It sits just below all the controls. I was some what worried about it not reaching out far enough as the cd player is recessed when compared with all the radio and nav controls. But it's about as perfect as possible. The best part about this mount in my opinion is that it keeps a person like myself from having to many items on the windshield. Without this I'd have- Radar Detector, Phone, toll tag, and gps, way to many things, phone being the largest of them all. Anyway, I'll take some pictures and maybe a mini review later. I highly recommend to anyone who want a good out of the way docking solution.

I use this holder: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00R0MELU6?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00
It is not made specifically for the Z5C. And the one major drawback for some people is that you have to put a permanent metal plate on the back of your phone. For that reason, I have added a Balolo wooden back. The metal plate is attached to the wood, allowing me to remove the plate (actually, the wood) without damage to the phone. The Mountek advertising says you can simply put the unattached metal plate between the phone and a typical case. However, with a previous phone I found that there's just enough movement of the metal to scratch the back of the phone, so I don't recommend that approach.
This is not the perfect answer, but after trying many different car phone holders I have been most satisfied with the Mountek. The magnet does a super job, even on the back country roads in Costa Rica. Mountek is planning to release an air vent version by the end of December, if the CD version doesn't work for you (or you use your CD player).
Hope this helps.

I used their product with my last phone and it was a very nice and clean solution. Not affiliated in any way with them...

Thanx for the suggestion, but from where i'm living, spending upwards of a hundred dollars for a phone holder is unviable to me. Nice solution, just a tad pricey.

Looks like I'll be waiting for the air vent version to come out. Or until I find a better alternative. Thank you anyways
I'm using this: http://www.amazon.com/Breffo-Spiderpodium-Smartphone-Mount-Holder/dp/B003O1V5CY
I've bent the two of the arms to hook into an air vent and then bent the remaining six with 2 on the bottom and 4 on the sides. I've bent them in a way where I can mount the phone vertically and horizontally. When mounted vertically, the microUSB power cable plugs in nicely between the two legs.

Hello, I've came across this solution as well, how long have you had this product and how durable are the flexible 'legs'?
I shied away from it as I saw a couple of negative reviews stating that the 'legs' broke off just after a few uses.
Cheers!
I've had this setup for a couple years now with no issues. I don't really mess with it once it's in place. I do occasionally bend everything to make a stand so I can record time lapse recordings of my drives.

There is also a mountek version that doesn't use magnets. Its the Mountek Grip.
i use http://slipgripcarmounts.com
I use the Orzly bumper case which didnt quite fit. I sent him the case and the guy made a new mold for me which now fits. I think each one is made by hand by order. So if you do order, I'd email them first with what case you are using. They may offer to make one for you if you send them the case.
You can use also a original Nokia car holder cr-122 for the old Nokia N8-00. Is perfect to use for all Compact series with or without case (I'm using also with Puro 0.3 and Orzly fusion).
In my case I've customized the holder to attach to Brodit Proclip specific adapter for my car

I've just ordered my z5c (upgrading from z1c).
I have one of these handstraps attached to my phone case, and the elastic slips over the rear view mirror. I keep the phone over to one side so I can still use the mirror. Simple, cheap, and easy to keep your eyes on the road.

Kenu Airframe.
Here's the first video review that came up on google:

I am (again) very happy with this brodit mount: http://www.brodit.com/product.html?id=521797&pn=prod&brand=Sony&model=Xperia Z5 Compact
Not necessary to attach the charging cable to the mounted phone is very nice. And the brodit fits perfectly (without any case).
I have been using a number of different car holders from cheap to rather expensive stuff (not just for Z5C)
and until now the best working for me is this universal
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-C...hash=item3f6716f952:m:mIwx2zz-h8VTQe568OmV9tA
It solves the problem when phone placed behind the front screen gets warm by sun and you need to charge it at the same time.
Air vent does the cooling and the problem is gone.

I love the Kenu Airframe design, and it's worked in every car I've tried too. Very compact design that sticks into air vents and grips the sides of the phone (right above the power button is ideal). Also note that there are knock off cheap versions that you can find, such as from Deal Extreme, that seem to work just as well, at least with our compact phones
I only use a cardboard attached to the air vents up the radio. haha~ I'll post a picture sometime.
Is there anybody out there who has their Z5 Compact wrapped in a full body skin (wet apply type) who also has the Proclip mount for the Z5c, and can verify that the phone fits in the mount with the skin installed?
This turned out to be a real problem for me with my Nexus 4...the Proclip mold was not made with a millimeter to spare, and the tolerances were such that it had NO tolerance for anything but a completely naked phone. Hoping I can avoid a similar problem with the Z5c.
Thanks,
-- Nathan

I have a mount that works awesome from my car. I paid $3 and waited for 1 month for delivery.

If you are willing to be patient the cost of the car mounts on aliexpress are very cheap, you have very similar options that you see here on the thread.
I use this one:

Love it! The magnet is very strong and it's easy adjustable.
