Working around power button of Google/HTC Nexus One - General Topics

The power button on my N1 gradually stopped working, and now it doesn't work altogether. I bought my device through a friend, and do not have the gmail/shipping address of the original buyer, hence I can't get warranty coverage on it. So now i'm figuring out a way to life with the N1 without the power button.
Is there any way (any way at all) for me to power on my N1 without using the power button? For example, if my batter dies, or I shut down the phone, if there any way to power it on without pressing the power button?
I'm in a bit of a hole, and really need help. thanks!

Have you tried calling HTC and see what they could do? Other people have had success with transferring the warranty just by providing the previous owner's name.

Don't know of a work around. You should call HTC and see if they can assist.

Q: any ROMs capable of changing button commands?

So my phones power button recently stopped working (think its a spring or something but it fell into the phone and depressing it does nothing) and I was hoping that someone may know of any ROMs that may allow you to reset buttons so that say the volume down button allows me to wake the phone. Currently I can only wake the phone by receiving calls, plugging it in/unplugging or removing and replacing the battery. I am hoping that I will not have to take it to a repair shop or perform the repair it myself. Any help would be much appreciated.

The collective's Redemption can do this through the rom control feature. Their are probably other roms that can as well but I haven't used them.

[SOLVED]Jelly Bean update broke power button?

Hi,
I recently received the OTA update for Jelly Bean, and I upgraded with no problems. However, now, my power button is only working when it wants to. If press it a bunch of times, it might turn on if I'm lucky, but most of the time it doesn't work. Right now, the only way for me to activate my screen is by connecting the charger, or asking someone to call me. The only way to turn off the screen is to wait for it to turn off! As you can imagine, I am quite PO'ed by this problem.
Has anyone run into a similar situation? It seems like a software issue to me because before the update, the button was working perfectly. Everything is stock, by the way. I was on CM9 before the update, but I flashed to stock ICS so that I could install the OTA update. I don't have the clockworkmod recovery anymore either.
Please help!
UPDATE:
I did a little hack to fix it, at least temporarily. Not sure how long it will last now, but at least it didn't cost me any $$$.
quoting myself from below:
I couldn't figure out how to root my phone without a power button because I'm a lazy guy and a work-around just isn't worth the trouble imo. So, instead, I decided to just open it up and see if I could fix it....and I did
First things first though:

It's not a permanent fix, more like a hack, but a hack is better than a work-around any day. What I did was find the button on the motherboard, and then 'pinch' it with a small pair of pliers. My original fear was that the problem lied elsewhere on the phone because the actual button seemed to be clicking properly, but it's pretty much impossible to figure out what else the button is connected to and fix it. Luckily, pinching it made it work! I guess that the clicking mechanism isn't the same thing as what makes the contact in the button. If you are going to try pinching it, try not to pinch too hard. I did it a little too hard, and now the button doesn't come out as much as it used to, so it doesn't feel as good as the volume buttons. I'm pretty sure you just need to squeeze it enough so that it gets squished enough to make contact when you press it. Squeezing too much could almost definitely result in destroyed button.
So if anyone has the problem on their phone, and doesn't feel like paying a bunch of money and waiting a long time for it to be fixed, you can try this method to fix it (probably temporarily). Only problem, I guess, would be that you'd have to be more careful with how you treat the power button from now on. If you are good with a soldering iron and working with tiny components, you can probably find a new button on the internet and replace it yourself.

Sounds like infamous broken power button, which our phones suffer from.
Check this for a workaround.
Happened to me too. I tried to comfort myself into thinking it was a software problem. If your bootloader is unlocked and you're rooted, boot into recovery using Quick Boot and try to flash another rom and see if it solves anything. But I'm not hopeful. Most likely your power button just decided to give way.

For now, if you set the lock screen to 'none' you can turn the phone on if you press the volume buttons.
If you're using a custom rom, I'm sure there's a option to wake the device using volume button under the display settings.
If you're using cm10, you can add the sleep button to the power widgets.

Thanks for the reply guys. That's what I love about this forum: someone always has an answer to everything.
If the button actually broke I'm going to be very disappointed since I was trying to sell it to get a galaxy nexus. Horrible timing. :crying:
I Just found something weird. When I pull the battery, I can't power on the device with the power button, but if I connect the charger, then the button works. That is, it will power on when I press the button, not automatically when I connect the cable. Yes, the cable shows the charging icon, but it doesn't boot until I press the power button.
I still haven't flashed back to ICS to see if that fixed anything, but I'll post an update when I do.

hopefully samsung issues a patch or something, this is just sad. after I did the OTA my power button also S#1T the bed. thanks to all the people who came up with the suggestions above...

power button

not a technical question at all but need a desire s owner, i have just brought one for my gf, however cant tell if there is something wrong with the power button. It doesnt provide a reassuring click feel like on the sensation or the volume rocker on this device. Sure enough it works but you have to make good contact with the button, its not 'how it should be'
is this standard for the desire or should there be some sort of click to the power button
i should add it seems to be the same size and shape as the sensation button but some what more resessed, unevenly too.
If you bought this new, then take it back.
If you didn't then root it with a ROM (Like Reaper or Fallout) which provides wake-on-volume as an option. My power button is like that now and many other people get a similar problem with high usage.
I completely agree with Simon's advice I'd recommend that you take it back if you can and get a new hand set, the power button on my wife's is broken now and she has had to install a shake to wake application as she won't let me root it...although she intends to return it in the next few weeks for a replacement under warranty.
Sywepd form my DsereiS
Mine is simmilar. After about year i sent phone for repair because of lifting screen, and also mentioned the power button "problem" - from beginning the button was "unsure".
I got repaired phone but after 2 months, the situation is same. The button is not as "sure press" as on for example HTC Desire.
you could take it back..
next time when you find some error on htc, you can normally use power button to enter recovery mode

[Q] Can you remap the power button on the N5 completely?

Hi, i recently got screwed, bigtime. The power button on my N5 seems dead. It is acting, like its always pressed in, it causes the phone to essentially bootloop, but sometimes I can manage to get so far as the PIN code, and the apps are starting, but the screen kepps getting locked, and stuff. I'm sure, that it is the power button, that is faulty. I dont want to wait weeks for a replacement, if I dont have to, so I'm left wandering, it there any tool / adb hack that I could use to remap the power button to say... volume up? On the absolute ground zero, so the device would even use it to power up, not just to use the volume + as the power button after it booted. Thanks.
You'll need to fix the button. Otherwise you're always going to have issues. Won't be able to use recovery or bootloader likely... On top of your current issues.
It shouldn't cost much. ?
The answer is no.
I'm fairly certain, that you can only change it with the whole motherboard. That should be around 200$, but since they can't do it locally in my country, it's 200$ + shipping, most likely. That could be around 300$ in total, depending on where they'll need the ship the cursed thing.
If the warranty covers it, than mabe I'll just have to pay shipping, or maybe nothing at all. But anyways, it's at least 2-3 weeks without a phone, and possibly a buttload of costs (I could buy one around 400$ right now.) Not really a good option.
@Lethargy well, thanks, at least I wont have to dig trough the whole internet

Loose/Falling out Volume Button for Oneplus 7 Pro

I've recently noticed an issue with the volume button on my device. I don't know if it's always had the problem and I didn't notice it until recently due to using a case, but whenever I press volume down, the top half of the volume button will come completely out of the phone. I can see two little rubber nob looking things on the inside part of it. Volume up still works, but considering this is a relatively new device it's bothering me.
I'd take a picture but I don't have anything to take a picture with aside from the phone itself and it doesn't seem very visible in a mirror.
But I was wondering if this would be something fixable without taking the entire phone apart? I was considering seeing if warranty would cover it but if it'd require taking the phone apart I think I'd rather just live with the annoyance of knowing the issue exists rather than possibly messing up my device more from opening it up.

I'm having the exact same issue. And also was wondering the same thing. I purchased a replacement button, I'm waiting for it to arrive, but not sure if I need to open my op7 up
Same problem here...
Had this phone 2 days, seriously. All of the sudden, when I press the volume buttons, it goes full loud or full silent automatically with 1 touch. If you press the button in the middle, maybe a middle/double push of up/down, like when you MSM, it will stop at the location you did this.
The only way I resolved it was to MSM the phone, don't root, and do all the updates and stop at 10.2 version. Working now.
Don't know what people who have no clue about MSM, rooting and resetting would do if their phone did this.
Same problem here...
I can't even press normally the volume down and can't lower the volume normally as I could the volume up. I will not send my phone to op service because it'd take weeks for it to come back, they'd wipe all the data and I don't have any other phone... Have you found any solution? I'd prefer to not disassemble the phone because there is always a chance that something would mess up, even in a service, and the back glass wouldn't have glue anymore. Maybe I should buy a button, and try to pull it out, and replace it? Or have you found any other solution to that? Because I have this phone for three weeks, also using a case...
Volume button OP7 OP7Pro
Does anyone know if the volume button is the same for OnePlus7 and OnePlus 7 Pro? I destroyed mine on OP 7 and not able to find a replacement online. Only OP 7Pro.
