Battery problem on Touch Pro - possible cause - Touch Pro, Fuze General

Hi all,
My father bought an HTC Touch Pro some time ago; I think it was in 2008, as he needed a good phone, with the organization capability that WM has to offer.
The phone is in MINT conditions, really. It still has the original screen protector and no scratches can be found on it. He uses it a lot, but always has it in the leather case, and in a small pocket, which sometimes results in lost calls, as no one can really hear it ring . The battery is always fully charged, and after some testing I think it is still in good conditions.
The problem that he started getting is that after I installed some programs like GPS Tomtom and AGEPhone for SIP calling that he never uses (hehe), he started noticing the battery was discharging faster and that it would not last even 1 day, when before it would last about 3-4 days.
I uninstalled the programs, and the problem persists. Brightness is on 50%, wifi and any internet connection is turned off. No programs running in background, unless it's active sync that sometimes turns on itself.
POSSIBLE CAUSE - We noticed is that he has a lot of reminders, so the phone is constantly waking up. The problem is that it does not go to sleep afterwards. The touch screen is locked, so when a reminder pops up, the screen stays turned on, even if the backlight is not on, and just drains the battery completely.
Is there anything we can do, so that it (the reminders of meetings, birthdays and other stuff) would not wake the device up, or if it did, the phone would go to sleep after some seconds, so that it would not overheat and drain the battery in 1 day?
It is a quite annoying having to constantly look at the phone, dismissing reminders and turning the screen off, so the battery can last a bit longer.
I need to solve this problem, but my father will not agree with a custom ROM flash. Maximum I can do with it is upgrade it through the HTC tool, but I am not sure if it is worth it.
Here are the information:
Version de ROM: 1.90.406.5 FRE
Date de ROM: 08/20/08
Version de radio: 1.02.25.19
Version de protocole: 52.33.25.17W
The device was bought in Luxemburg and has a French windows mobile 6.1 on it, and an AZERTY keyboard.
Please help me with this issue.

Get tBattery and check to see the current draw under stead, idle conditions. With the backlight at 5, it should draw about 110 mA (there may be some spiking). Use the log feature, say for 10 min @ a time, with power-save options unchecked so the screen doesn't dim and it doesn't go to sleep. If the drain is high (constantly above 200 mA, let's say), then get a good task manager (hint: new dotfred's 3.3) and start killing processes, and see if that helps. If not, then try stopping some of ther services.

Thanks Farmer Ted for the reply, but I think I found the cause of the problem. I don't know why but after it wakes up, because of an appointment, it will not turn the screen off, even after 10 minutes and I have the power management set 30 sec off if not being used.
As the screen is locked, the appointment will not be dismissed by accident or pressed so it just stays like that, until the battery is dead.
Is there a hidden option to make the phone go back to sleep, or to prevent it from waking up, just making the led blink, as when you get new SMS messages and the screen is off, or when you get a missed call?
If there was I think it would solve the problem completely.
Thank you all for your help.

yes the problem is the screen it drains it faster than a hobo with a bottle of wiskey,
what you have to do it click on batter icon and get into the battery menu select advanced and elect turn back light off if device is not used for and select 10 second, then turn off device if not used for and slected 1 minute (its reffering to the screen)
then i use a program called touch pro tweak (its cooked into all energy roms) and there is a setting to wake up on call or text or notification and disable it by wake up it refers to turing the screen on

I have a simmilar problem.. I discovered what causes it... When I install certian programs, it changes the power settings.. namely, the power off when not plugged in setting... So, check out those settings... I have had this happen 3 or 4 times in as many months... then I notice the same issues with my battery.. after I go change the settigns back (for the 100th time) it goes back to pastign 2-3 days for me... (instead of less than 1)

Hi people, sorry to bring up this topic again, but I see no point in creating a new one.
I would like to ask if any of you would recommend me a good French ROM (as it comes with AZERTY keyboard) for this device that has good battery life?
Is it possible that a cooked WM 6.5 would use less battery then stock WM 6.1?
I have another problem, is there a way to turn up the ringing volume of the phone, in order to hear it even if it is in a small bag? It's already on max, but my father complaints the ringing volume is too low and he can not hear it.
And last but not least, how much does this battery normally last? Wifi off, bluetooth off, calling about 15 min a day, some SMS and a lot of reminders.
It can not go a day, max two days without recharging. It is always turned off when he goes to sleep, because if not, he will wake up with a dead device.

Overnight problems Touch Pro

Hi,
I've been experiencing some 'overnight' problems with the HTC Touch Pro lately.
The Pro is switched on for like 24/7 and works fine.
The thing is that it now and then happens that in the morning (so after a night standby time) the Touch Pro is all messed up.
Things that I have seen now:
- Device is turned off completely and needs to be turned on again (like the battery is down, but it's NOT).
- Device seems to have had a soft reset, since it shows the 'ENTER PIN' screen when I switch it on.
- TouchFLO 3D is all scrambled (see attached pictures for examples)
I think (read: hope) that it's all software and that it'll be fixed by a future ROM upgrade, since I've never had such problems with the Touch Diamond before. It's quite frustrating since the first two problems cause the fact that the phone is offline.
Do the problems sound familiar to you? I didn't find other topics concerning my experiences...
I think it may help if people also listed what apps they have installed. Up until last night, i had not had any issues with the device overnight. However after installing battery status last night, this morning the device had soft reset in the night. This is the first time in 3weeks.
The battery indicator is another issue which i think most people have. The indicator seems to get stuck and then when it updates it looks like a lot of battery has been used in a small amount of time. FOr instance my battery was reading 100% for over 4 hours then suddenly jumped to 95%. Also when charging i have had the TP stop charging at 87% and looking at the current level - only 80mA was being drawn, indicating that the battery was not charging. A soft reset later, corrected this. I am just wondering whether this is what is causing the soft resets in the night - ie the device detects that it has been charging for a long time with no battery level change and therefore resets. Just a hunch..........
- Device is turned off completely and needs to be turned on again (like the battery is down, but it's NOT).
I've had this a couple of times but hitting the power button doesnt work, I have to use the soft reset to get the phone back.
- Device seems to have had a soft reset, since it shows the 'ENTER PIN' screen when I switch it on.
Had the same thing a couple of times too.
- TouchFLO 3D is all scrambled (see attached pictures for examples)
Again, had this a few times
Not had TF3D scrambled, but had the other two. I'm pretty sure it has happened to me only when charging (other people report similar problems resuming from standby when charging). Perhaps, like me, you mainly charge the device at night?
I'm currently running with TF3D off (Settings, Today, Items, un-tick TouchFLO3D, tick some standard today items instead), and I haven't seen this problem since.
Cheers,
Graham.
hmmm...I'm very curious how this is coming...
Maby it are the installed programs that doesn't work correctly..
I'm curious if ya let the phone 'standard' so without installing all kinds of programs if the phone still has these problems.

Verizon Touch Pro 2 - Will Not Enter Sleep Mode!

Hey everyone,
I need your help figuring out why my Touch Pro 2 will not enter sleep mode on it's own. For some reason, the back light will dim, but the screen will stay on even though I have all my settings correct in the power management settings. Has anyone experienced this before? I think the fact my phone will not sleep automatically really impacts my battery life as I can barley make it from 7AM-5PM with barely using it much. It use to work fine, but now it doesn't. I've even done a format of the device twice, but still that doesn't seem to fix the issue.
Any help or advice is appreciated.
Not sure what programs you have loaded but try cold boot, see if works. Then check as you add one program at a time.
There is also an option under settings/battery/advanced to force the device to sleep after a period of time.
@ Aspesi4
Did you ever find a solution for this? I'm having the same issue.
I'm not sure when it started as I have a habit of putting the phone to sleep manually before I holster it.
If I lock the phone, the screen will dim, and at intervals, get bright again on its own. If I leave it at the TF Home Screen, it will stay bright and never dim.
I just can't bring myself to hard reset this phone right now . . lol. Maybe when I have more time. For now, I'll keep manually putting the phone to sleep .. . . sort of a muscle memory thing anyway. I wouldn't mind fixing it though, either.
Nope, never solved this problem. Sorry, I think you're on your own on this one.
I have also been experiencing this problem. I just got my Verizon Touch Pro 2 about two weeks ago. I have only added a handful of apps (WinMo MarketPlace, NetFlix Mobile manager, AP Mobile News, WeatherBug, and Shazam. I am pretty sure it was doing this before Shazam.) I think the phone was doing this even before I installed anything on it, but not certain. This is what I noticed;(I had T-Mobile's version and it did not have this issue.) I was amazed that my new Verizon Touch Pro2 was draining its battery life much more quickly than my TMobile version. Then I figured it out; when ever I get any notice on my phone (missed call, text message, phone notification)the screen lights up. This is normal. However, what is not normal is that the screen stays on until I manually acknowledge the notification or I manually hit the sleep button. I have the power management settings to turn off the backlight if not used for 30 sec and to put the phone to sleep after 1 minute. I tested it a few times to see if it would eventually turn off, 1 minute, 3 minute, up to 15 minutes and it still stayed on. . .
htc touch pro 2 won't enter sleep mode
It's the weather program that keeps it awake ...Slider Bar -> Settings -> Data Download Weather -> Uncheck download weather automatically
htc touch pro 2 won't enter sleep mode
"It's the weather program that keeps it awake ...Slider Bar -> Settings -> Data Download Weather -> Uncheck download weather automatically"......
Agreed it is the weather program.
Specifically I turned off my location data collection..... Settings > Location > Improve Location Service (Slide to off). This worked! However out of interest I switched it back on and my backlight still sleeps OK, I just hope this problem doesn't keep randomly popping up.
I'm experiencing the same issue, suddenly...
But when I re-enable the Location option, it won't go into sleep...
Any ideas how to fix this?
bloddy idiots. HTC adds fancy animated auto-downloading weather at GPS location and break the ability to turn the phone on or answer calls! Quietly BRILLIANT!!!!!! idiots.

TouchPro2 Battery Life falling rapidly :(

Hoping someone might be able to help me here..
Within an hour of being taking off the charger (and confirming it was 100% at that time) my battery life is down to 80%.
What's happened so far is:
1) alarm went off (set to ring only - no vibrate)
2) recieved 2 emails on yahoo (set to check every 60 mins)
3) received 1 push email through exchange/active sync
4) 1 calendar appt reminder.
The screen has probably only come on 3 times for no more than 10 seconds each time. My brightness is set to the 2nd lowest level possible. My ringer is on the highest.
Here are the apps I have installed. I have not "launched" any of these today.
.net 3.5
Easy Shares
Google Maps
Microsoft My Phone - (set to sync once at 3am & was on charger then)
Mobil manager for netflix
S2U2
Waze (another GPS app)
Phone is about 4 weeks old.
download HD Tweak and set up data disconnect after to 1 minute. I am almost positive your data is staying on after downloading email because i had the same problem with my Touch Pro. Keeping the data session open is a huge battery drain
My battery life is terrible too! I charge it fully throughout the night and the phone typically dies by the time I get home from work at 6PM or so. I barely use it at work. Never talk on it. The occasional text message. But by the end of the day the phones dead. I have no idea why. I know for some odd reason by phone will not automatically go into sleep mode. It should, but doesn't. Not sure if that kills the battery even though I manually push the sleep mode button each time.
I set up the HD Tweak software. We'll see if this helps. Does it work for the Touch Pro 2 also?
Any of you guys using a case with a magnet on it by any chance?
Possible explanation...

Just curious, did you charge the phone while it was on? If so, I've found it a problem. I once charged my phone while it was on, and I took it off after about 2 hours (the green LED indicator probably showed up an hour before I took it off). I checked the battery meter and it registered at 89%! I found out that there's a flaw in the way the found charges. Once the LED turns green for a full charge, the charger cuts off, but (I think what I'm about to say might be true) the phone thinks it's running something as it charges, thus causing the rapid battery drop.
Since then, I stopped charging my phone while it was on. I now turn off the phone and then charge it. I can last a whole day with about 45 minutes total on the Internet, and my battery would go to about 60+%.
However, as jaas666 pointed out, are you putting your phone near a magnet? The magnet tricks the phone into thinking the stylus/keyboard is being pulled out, thus causing it to wake up, which will drain your battery.
Have you tried a task manager to see if a program is running when it's not supposed to?
http://www.dotfred.net/TaskMgr.htm
I had terrible battery life and found two issues. One program was always taking up around 10% CPU usage (VZO video chat software). Also found that Google Sync, set up through ActiveSync, was having trouble. I'd open ActiveSync and find it in a synching loop. For me the solution was to untick "Tasks" in the sync menu. Since then, battery life has been great.

HD Tweak works fine on mine, I've also heard of some people using Diamond Tweak. I mostly text all day maybe some internet but I have gone a day and a half without charging and even then my battery had only gotten to ~20% so I think with a few changes it could be fixed. I'd check out some of the Tweaks threads here and at PPCgeeks for registry edits u can do to save the battery too
I had those issues with my 2000mAh battery on my sprint tp1. With my verizon tp2 my battery life is fantastic. I use the crap out of it all day also. Was wondering if the bad battery life is happening mostly with sprint users.
I have my active sync connected at all times for wireless email calendar task syncing. I charge with the phone on all nite long and the battery drains only slowly throughout the day. Less than 50% today. It is on 24/7 I never shut it down unless I'm soft resetting due to a file or app install. I use my ms3.5 task manager to keep stuff closed after using. I always put it to sleep mode by the button when I'm done with it. My screen is set to brightest and stays on 2 min. before sleep mode engages unless I manually do it.
I'm sorry to hear your battery issues, my tp1 with sprint was really hard on battery juice. I found it would struggle to find a signal alot, one reason I switched to vzw.
Hope you figure it out.
Sad to say that my less than 4 days old Sprint TP2 is disappointing to say the least in battery life and all around usability. Now i'm coming from a Treo Pro and so used to one handed operations and such. But i digress...
Battery life on this beast is sad, really sad. Someone alluded to Gmail Exchange ActiveSync as a potential battery drain so i might look into that. Basically i'm gonna hard rest and start from scratch applying less tweaks. Basically i find TF3D tedious really..takes too many steps just to do some basic things. I turned it off and managed better a bit but i just might go back to my Treo Pro and sell this thing..
My battery "appears" to drop quickly, but actually hangs in there quite nicely. My old phone only showed me 20% increments, so going to 1% makes it very noticable.
I ran cleanup first thing, then went back and customized.
I use Activesync in push mode (7 days per week 8am - 9pm), have it checking Hotmail, stocks, weather every 30 minutes. BT is on, Data on, WiFi off. I even went back and turned auto screen back on as I couldn't read cleanups default change in the sunlight.
Gets turned on at 7am, and at 10 pm I'm ussually 30-40%. Medium user - 40 minutes phone use daily, 1-2 hours total IE time, ALOT of email checking, hardly any SMS.
I do use a magnetic holster too. S2U2 fixed that issue.
Biggest drain I noticed is screen. If I turn off auto and go back to CleanUp default, I can get through almost 2 full days if I turn it off around 11pm, and back on 7am.
And as far as battery total use, my older phones always turned themselves off at about 15%. THIS THING WARNS ME AT ABOUT 4% and turns off 2-3%! That's alot of extra battery use.
There is a company making a 1750a battery that will fit in stock case.
Tp2 VZW
Not sure if this will help you but some phone cases can cause battery drain. Read here:

TP2 and Imagio Battery Useage

Okay, I have an Imagio (please don't judge me ) and like many of you TP2 owners, the only real complaint I have about the phone is the battery life.
For me, I rely heavily on the device as a phone first (no big surprise, right?), email second, and then text and internet. Based on how I use my phone, I think the biggest contributor to my quick battery drain is the fact I have to leave my data connection 'on' to auto send/receive email.
I'm interested to know if there's a tweak or something out there that would allow me to leave my data 'off', automatically turn it 'on' to send/receive email at my specified interval, and then turn it 'off' again once completed. I know I could do that manually but was curious if there's something out there that could run in the background.
Also, thinking about it, has anyone looked into changing the weather tab uppdate time? I'm also wondering if the weather sync feature is sucking battery power?
Ok, my TP2 with Telus I have on data all the time, with push email (so more frequently goes active) and have no problems at all with battery usage. I can go several days between charges, but don't because I plug my phone in every night anyway.
How much talk time do you have on the phone on an average day? How many emails do you recieve? Is it exchange based on POP/IMAP?
You can easily set up the email sync itself to be manual, i.e. open your email app and click on send/recv - this way it won't hop on itself to grab emails all the time which will help with your battery life, but not really by much.
Similarly just set the weather application not to update automatically.
Keep in mind that a single phone call (on average) lasts about 3 minutes, a single data session lasts only a few seconds.
But even if you still want it to send/recv at a specified interval then when the connection is dormant (i.e. in between scheduled send/recv) it's not really taking any more power than if it was "offline" - this is just a state that both ends know, not an always-active transmit/receive when there is no actual data.
If you really need more battery life then just wait a few seconds when you check your email or the weather for it to go online and grab the data on demand.
Thanks for the reply Telek. Since I've had the phone, my talk time per day has been pretty low, relatively speaking. I seem to notice the drain after the phone's been sitting idle. I charge daily but if I didn't, I'm guessing I wouldn't come near several days on a single one.
I do get poor reception while I'm in my house and I'm thinking that might have something to do with it. What you wrote about the data connection while inactive makes a lot of sense - I should probably be looking elsewhere.
Also, my phone is set to CDMA only in case any viewers are thinking of asking the question.
Well poorer reception will hurt battery life, but only while the phone is active. CDMA signals all have to reach the tower at the same strength (IIRC) so if a phone has poorer reception it will have to up it's broadcast power.
How many emails are you getting daily? Is it feasible to just go to "on demand" and manually do a send/recv to see if that helps your battery life?
It's possible that the phone isn't going into sleep mode, or times out at a much longer interval than normal. Perhaps try going into the power management page and shrinking the timeouts?
Not sure what else to suggest - maybe you just have a bad battery?
I am in the same boat here. Although I use pop and don't get that much email. I use it as a phone, text, then data. Just through a days use, sometimes not making a phone call at all my battery will be near death. I HAVE to charge it daily. I have a car charger, charger at work, and 2 chargers at home so I always can charge so it isn't that big of a deal for me. My signal strength is normally above 70% through my house and work.
I am ready to try out a new rom to see if that makes a difference.
PS not trying to thread steal but throwing out some info that might help.
I have to charge my TP2 like 3 times a day. Between Twitter, email, and reading on the net it goes pretty fast.
My battery life isnt too good either...I have email set to check every 2 hours. If i browse the net for about 15 minutes I lose a notch in battery life. I have to charge every night too!!
I got the 2100 extended battery in the mail today, im going to try it out and see how it does...if it's not a big improvement then im sending it back...the extended battery cover is ugly and slightly bulky so I dont like that to well...
Has anyone fooled around with the power management settings in ATC? If so, any notable changes worht exploring?
Well for my usage on a Sprint Touch Pro 2, I get good battery life. I make maybe 10 calls a day but each call is less than 2 minutes.
I surf the web maybe an hour a day and send + receive maybe 75-100 texts a day. I dont check my email to often.
Maybe 3 times a day I press Send/Receive but after I finish my stuff, I go to Communications and turn off my Data Connection.
At the end of the day I have about 60%. Although I have my backlight set at 30%. Others like it halfway and others fully set.
30% is ok for me indoors but once outside I turn it up to 80% if I really need too but then set it back to 30% once indoors.
Some solutions to Imagio battery drain
My 1st Imagio had no problem with battery, but the "end" key broke so I had a replacement sent. The replacement had nicks on screen and major battery drain, with overnight charge, by 3:00pm I had 5% left. So I sent for 2nd replacement. Same problem with the battery, fully drained by midday. Frustrated, I went to Verizon and requested replacement battery. All seemed well at first. Then, the new battery began to drain. I started eliminating programs running and now, at 10:00pm, I still have 72%, I talked, texted, sent pic mssg, got email, updated weather...etc. This is what I changed.
I turned the phone to CDMA only.
I changed input back to default HTC qwerty (I had sip change to swype)
I set email to check once a day, but I hit send/receive periodically
I set weather to check once a day.
Sorry, but I also uninstalled "codyppc performance booster"
I reinabled Auto Divice lock. (this seemed to help save battery by locking)
I am running spb mobile shell 3.5 and WM 6.5 interface. Whenever I run the HTC Touchflo3D it seems to drain more battery, along with suck up memory.
I check running applications often, reset a couple times a day. I am having an issue with my spb time alarm going off in the morning though. I will try something tonight to eliminate that as the culprit. Overall, I think anything set to run regularly will drain the battery. With these fixes, now I LOVE THIS PHONE. I have all my programs on it, lots of program and storage memory left, (more than I had out of the box) tweaked just the way I like. Hope this helps someone.
Please don't forget Clean Ram(search xda) , helped me alot.

Request: Blinking Led when power on (but stand-by)??

Is there an apk for get blinking led when power on?
Anyway 1st of all: where do you know that your phone is still alive if it is stand-by???
Second: My wife just bought DHD and her 1st question is how do I know that this phone is still alive and kicking if it is stand-by mode?
And.... I think... blinking led f.e every 60 secs doesn't consume battery a lot??
Bump... Because I made a reguest before...
somebody did this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9039420
However... I am not using Winmo 6.5.3 anymore
PeeHoo,
Not exactly sure if this is what you have in mind, but my battery monitoring app, BattMonX, will keep the LED on (provided the phone's hardware supports it, of course ) while monitoring the battery charging state.
Its highly configurable and might fulfill your needs.
Give it a try...its free in the Market.
Cheers!
Thx... I tried it... but I'd like more a solution where I could choose that led blinks f.e once in a 30 secs or 60 secs when phone is stand-by and still alive... I cannot get this apk working like that...
And this might confuse me also (when led is always on) because sometimes if android crashes or freezes it could cause similar situation (that led stays on)...

Yeah, it there does seem to be a little "wonkiness" (if you will) to the consistency of how the LEDs are supported throughout the Android world. Much of this inconsistency is due to hardware implementions, I'm sure (for example, the HTC phones are much different than the Motorola phones in the API's behavior and affect on the LEDs (not to mention what colors are supported)).
There's also the issue of what is actually happening in "stand-by" (I assume you mean when the phone's screen is off and presumably asleep). I've found that without using wake-locks, the user apps (services included (even ones monitoring for system intents)) are indeed quiesced within a few minutes of turning the screen off. This was why I added my "rainbow mode" feature in my app...it was purely to see how Android was affecting how responsive my app was after the screen is turned off. You can actually see Android slowing things down as time goes on after the screen is turned off. So, I think the only way you could get what you want would be to have an app that implements a wake-lock and keeps the CPU alive while the screen is off...a scenario that I don't think most folks would really like due to the potential impact on battery life (i.e., if the CPU is awake for your app, its awake for all apps (I believe)).
Cheers!
