This is my first WM phone, so I'm a bit lost. I've Googled for AV software for WM but there doesn't seem to be that much offer and I haven't found any reviews. I've even read that it is not really needed
Anyway, what AV do you recommend? BTW, are there any free AV for WM?
Thanks.

Hi, there is the Symantec AV for windows mobile, you can get it from the below link
http://www.symantec.com/business/mobile-security-suite-for-windows-mobile
personally I dont bother with a AV, I probably should, but I haven't had any issues so far.

i know it's windows but you do NOT need A/V software for your phone. it will only slow it down. i've had a windows mobile device since 2003 and never seen a virus or heard of anyone that has.
there are concept viruses, but nothing in the wild. also, there are blackberry and iphone concept viruses
I have Nod32 trial mobile edition installed on my HD2, I haven't noticed any significant slow down. however it'd probably be good to test with some kind of benchmarking software to see whether this is true or just subjective.
Mobile Antivirus isn't good idea. Too small virus bases in all Mobile AV.
Symantec Endpoint Ptotection or Norton 360 on PC - good idea.
There is no problems to scan viruses on Storage Card.
If you want check for viruses main storage - unpack your HD2 backup on PC and check unpacked files.
Don't waste resources or money on mobile anti-virus, ive NEVER heard or seen one, and I as well have had a few WinMo devices
Thanks for the input. WM viruses do exist, I'm afraid. The internet is full of recent news of a WM virus that comes with a game: 3D Anti-Terrorist. There is even a thread on it on the XDA forum.
I've done further research and WM virus seen to be rare indeed, but if there is a free AV that doesn't slow down the phone I won't mind having it installed.
https://www.mylookout.com/ you may try this one... It's free and has some trackin' stuff...
There is the Terdial virus that makes internation calls
I am not allowed to link to it as I am a new member (tut) but if you google it you will find information

ok, prehaps i shouldn't ask it tat way... actually the main thg is i just wanna know if there is any possiblity tat we can use PPC softwares on Window mobile based smartphone?
That would depend on the software and the device.
Some will run, some you won't be able to use without touch screen and some will need extra components.
you can try...it's all winCE...
I know some of my old smartphone software works o.k. on my PPC, but PPC is like smartphone's bigger brother: with extras (touchscreen, others, etc.)
The screen is broke on my smartphone now but I seem to remember installing some stuff meant for PPC on there back in the day with varying results. I think some did work, but not a lot worked nicely.
AFAIK you need to port, change a few things (like have no touchscreen input) for a reliable result.
it being winCE is not always enough
binary files are spc for the cpu they were compiled for
but if they have the same cpu and the same libs
it would work
another matter is .net and java they are not written for a spc cpu but for the framework

Excellent article. Note that, however, it states all PPC apps run on a Smartphone w/ SPHelper ("Does this mean that they will run the same software? / Yes and no. All Windows Mobile devices (Smartphone, PPC, PPC phone edition, etc) can run the same actual executable code (.exe files) as long as it has been written for a Windows Mobile device. However if you actually try to install PPC software on a Smartphone (or vice versa) using Activesync, you might get an error message stating the device is incorrect and it will refuse to do anything."). This is, however, not really the case. See my related articles and hacking reports - in the articles I've posted in the last 2 weeks, I've posted a LOT of info on interoperability issues.
As a rule of thumb, about 10% of native (NON-Compact Framework-based) PPC programs can be hacked to work on a QVGA Smartphone. On a 176*220 one, even fewer.

Make sure you don't miss ANY of my articles. They are ALL in this very "General" forum.
I've published a LOT of information on these subjects, listing all the compatible software and how they can be hacked.
there should be a special forum for them since there are soo many they cant be sticky
some might get pushed far back

i want to upgrade my topaz to windows 6.5. i cant find antivirus that works in that windows. i have kaspersky 8.0.0.75 but it works in windows 6.1. can somebody help me?
Try eset:
http://www.eset.com/products/mobileantivirus.php
I use them for my pc, but don't really feel the need to buy mobile antivirus
Try Lookout. Works great & no memory footprint.
I have Kaspersky Mobile Security 8 installed on windows 6.5 mobile. to me, it works fine. i have tried changing the SIM card and i was getting the SMS about the card change.
Other features though i did not try, but should be working.
Kaspersky on the other hand are going to roll out KMS 9 in first quarter of 2010. Which is few days from now. So if you are a Kaspersky fan you can install KMS 9 with the same product serial number for KMS 8 which you have now.

Hi everyone!
I'd like to ask if an antivirus software is really needed. All I do, is just some browsing at specific forums, watching videos at YouTube and installing some programmes (downloaded only from xda).
No its not really needed, I would only install if you have valuable data, which you should probably encrypt, or you download from bad places
Are there any virus's which can effect WM, outside of a test environment that is, my PC anti virus hardly ever picks up anything, all I would think mobile anti virus would do is take up memory/processor and some hard earned cash!!!!
Is anyone here reacting to a past instance of actual virus infection, or just being extra careful.
Ok!! Thanks a lot for the answers!
thanks everybody
I had read somewhere that there are very few viruses which really affect windows mobile platform. i use KMS8 more for security (anti theft feature) rather than finding virus on mobile.
Using fsecure from years now, it act as antivirus firewall and you can lock and swipe your phone in case of a robbery.
Support is very good but slow on reaction.
Tranfer from a phone to an other one is possible only 3 times or ask support who is helpfull in problem resolution

Okay... look here for all the apps we use on our hd2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=603880
On Windows Mobile.. you can look for apps outside of the "marketplace".. you download them as a .cab file (on pc or phone) and place them on the sd card if you want... which out the box is unique to windows mobile (doesn't eat up phone memory (but not that we lack it on the new hd2 lol))
Once the .cab file is on your phone/sd card... in the phone you go to file explorer (in the start menu)... click on it and navigate to where you placed the .cab file and run it. You can save the installation to the "device" because there is plenty of memory and tends to run better.
To awnser your questions;
[1] Google voice idk, but im sure google will have a wm app out soon (if not already, im not 'in' google voice so dunno)
[2] Last.fm Googling around a bit i see they (or someone) released a windows mobile app in 2008, but all links to it trow a 404, so check out their mobile forums, specifically this sticky
[3] Pandora, just read this; http://www.pandora.com/on-windowsmobile (Point your mobile phone's browser to www.pandora.com)
[4] Incomplete emails Thats just a setting since most people use gprs/hsdpa, im sure you can change it, either somewhere in the settings or trough a registry edit
Though i just have to say/write this, DONT GET ME WRONG but honestly, you shouldn't try to make this like your iPhone, although Microsoft/HTC are clearly trying to 'collect' some iPhone users, overall the HD2 isn't user friendly enough to be a iPhone (yes i sayd it) That doesn't mean you shouldn't stick with the HD2 though, just forget the iPhone
To put some strength behind my 'user friendly' statement, if your ROM is from before 1.66, the HD2 will have quite some silly bugs, like SMS messages that get stuck in the outbox but only (if your lucky) send 3 weeks later, problems with the camera, not beeing able to read/write large miniSD cards & more.
On the other hand, if your in any way IT related or just in general good with computers, this is currently the best phone on the market (counting HD2 and HD2b as one) it does the latest wireless connection methods, has build-in gps, compass and g-sensor, a 1ghz gpu, a 'gpu' (kinda) and more geeky features, and hey, it can emulate most psx games at full speed (www.fpsece.net)
I'd just strongly suggest you to get a new ROM from the HTC site, assuming you have a device with pre 1.66
I hope the above helped a bit, not trying to make windows mobile even more confusing for you, just trying to tell you that it cant really be compared to iPhone/Android, it can be compared to windows, there are actually millions of apps, nobody ever felt the need for a windows marketplace until iPhone got one and Microsoft had to compete, at which they currently fail hard i agree, the windows marketplace thing is a joke, just use google.
Hey Guys,
1) sorry if this has come up before, search-fu is weak and nothign relevant seems to come up with the "Similar threads" thing.
2) My provider has all but forced me off Windows Mobile, which is fine, since with sideloading being such a hard task on WM7, and that I would have to pay alot to get a WM7 handset and go up monthly fees too, i'm not too fussed.
So i've taken the plunge and gone for an Android phone, trouble is I have a few apps on my old windows mobile device I would love to run on Android... number 1 priority being TomTom Navigator, which yes, I could repay for, but I don't see why I should have to.
So, is there any software in the works that will let me run Windows Mobile based apps on an Android phone?
many thanks
Sorry for bringing an old topic back into the daylight, but I have the same thought. I definately need some apps of WM running on Android when I'll buy my new phone, so this kind of emulator would be a major reason to switch from my outdated Touch Pro. Couldn't something like Haret be created, just to run Windows Mobile, not Android?
There is no, for now
thanks for clearing that out, that's a pitty. But how about the future? Is it at least theorically possible to create something to have this kind of dual boot? Would Android community and developers be interesting in this?
Yeah I wish that was possible, but no.
A while back I found a link to a mediafire archive with something like 50 CAB's in it, for Windows Mobile 6.x. Does anyone know where that archive is?
It used to be bookmarked on my computer, but I accidently deleted it, so it's now gone.
I imagine that some of those CAB's are probably somewhere else on the interwebs as well, but I have been searching all day to no avail.
Also, FreewarePocketPC still has lot's of stuff available for WM devices, but a lot of it is intermixed with crap for Android(most of the Android **** that's clogging the site is just virus anyways), and Windows Phone 7, and some of the links are dead.
P.S. I have an archive of CAB's as well, I will be sharing soon, most of the CAB's I have are still available elsewhere on the interwebs, but with WM6.x getting older by the day, and so many things linkrotting as we type, it won't be long before the ever-diminishing set of workable programs reaches zero, and our beloved WinCE/WM6.x based devices are dead forever. So the more mirrored archives there are, the better.
NOTE: IF anyone wants an app, PM me, do not clog the forums with requests. NO, I do not have warez and paid software, I do not have any way to make your paid software work without paying, DO NOT ask for warez, if you do, your PM will be copied to this thread for everyone to see and laugh at.

1.) Opera Mini 5 - In download box below. Web browser for WM2003 all the way up to WM6.5.5, still works and because of Opera compression, it renders nicely even over 2G and modern websites are rendered nicely.
2.) UC Browser 7.04 - In download box below. Another web browser for WM5 up to WM6.5.5, still works, built by a Chinese company, not sure if it uses compression, like other browsers for WM, rendering quality is hit or miss depending on the site.
3.) Opera Mobile 10 BETA - In download box below. A newer version of Opera, for WM5 and above, still works, like with Mini 5, it uses Opera compression servers so it browses fast over 2G and modern websites are still nice. AFAIK it supports Flash.
4.) SkyFire - In download box below. Another nice browser. I am not sure if it still works, it uses SkyFire compression servers, supports flash. SkyFire as of 2013 was still available for Android, so it's possible the compression servers are still active. If the servers are not active, then since this AFAIK does not render locally, it's just here for historical completeness.
5.) ZetaKey 2010 - In download box below. This is a browser that is AFAIK still developed for WM6 and up. It supports HTML5 and AFAIK Flash, based on WebKit, so even without compression servers(which this does not use), it should render modern websites okay.
6.) Iris Browser 1.1.9 - In download box below. This browser still works. Uses WebKit, although it is not developed anymore, it does score a 100/100 on Acid3, has a pop-up blocker and supports NPAPI plugins just like Firefox.
7.) ZetaKey 2017 - In download box below. See ZetaKey 2010 entry. This is the newest version of that browser.
8.) TCPMP Finger Friendly. A great media player for WM devices. IMO it's even better than what comes on most Androids even in 2019.
Original link is still up: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=634951
Or you can download it from the box below.
1.) Flexilis Mobile Security - Link in download box below. This is a once-popular anti-virus program for WM6.x devices. It is AFAIK the precursor to what we now know as Lookout on Android devices. I am not sure if it has new virus definitions, but then again, is there anyone actually creating *new* viruses for WM6.x anyways?
2.) ESET Mobile Antivirus - Link in download box below. This is another popular anti-virus program for WM5 through 6.5.5, although the WM version is no longer developed nor is it still supported, ESET is still around and still makes some of the best anti-virus software for Linux, Windows, MacOS and Android.
3.) FingerKeyboard - Probably one of, if not the best alternative keyboards for WM6/6.5. It is way better than the stock keyboard(although the HTC keyboard is decent).
Download it from the box below, or the original link is still active here. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=487677
4.) Esmertec Jbed - This allows Java midlets to run on Windows Mobile devices.
Get it from the box below or go here(https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=407667) because the original link is still active...
5.) Adobe Reader - View PDF files on Windows Mobile. Get it from the download box below.
Dude, don't you think you've been late with this thread for about 10 years?
I know maybe 3 or 4 old-fags here at xda (including me) who still have functional WM6.5 - WEH6.5.3 phones. And we are mostly "chiefs" - we cook our own roms and have all the necessary soft in our roms already.

I am just putting this out here mainly as a way a of preserving these programs for anyone who might care aboit them. Also, so if there might be anyone out there who still happens to have a device that can use these. So, sure, the thread is 10 years out of date, but thats exactly the point.
I'll take that bet...
Well I for one would love to see archives of old WM6.x CABs. I bought the HD2 In the first week it was out, and loved tweeking and fiddling with it until I had to factory reset it and remember where I stored the latest viable backup.
I must have crashes that thing a dozen times or more!
Well I never did get myself together enough to build a kitchen and learn to cook up some ROMs, but I had fun with all of the crazy and cool programs and apps. Cookie monster had an awesome UI Tweeker as I recall.
So yeah, I found the ol' Leo and charged it up! It's working!
I would love some links to CAB archives!
I recently bought some Windows Mobile devices just to play with, so I would also love an archive.
Finally somebody doing this. Thanks.
A bit late, but preservation is always good.
I tried finding games for WinMo, but every single link i came across was dead. (If somebody comments about piracy... WinMo has been discontinuted for, like, what? 10 years?)
If anyone still has any app installed on their WinMo phones, please make a backup and upload it.
I was a Symbian user when WinMo was still used, so i kinda missed on pretty much everything.
And you know what's the weird thing?
You can still find SYS files for Symbian all around the internet, but WinMo apps simply vanished.
So, yeah, if any of y'all have any app, just post it here.

I have a bunch on my HD2, I just dont know how to upload to here. Or anywhere else for that matter. I will look into a file share site. Any help would be appreciated.
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ still operates with most links still working. In most cases it offers a primary link & a mirror link to download the Apps. On the rare occasion both links fail a web search on the App or developer name will usually yield a result. Only very rarely can I not find a WM6.5 CAB, registry hack, etc., that I want. I've been amazed how much is still out there. I've used the HD2 as my sole Phone/PDA for almost 10 years & by trial & error I've got it to be very stable (a screen freeze is now a rare & notable event). I recently added the new 400GB microSD which is so fast I can put most Apps onto SD that formally required Device Memory installation only. I can't speak too highly of this little device. And the screen is much more scratch resistant than my wife's Lumia 950! Cheers

Sites that still have some form of .cab files:

A good extractor for cabs and thier extension files would be nice.

Chill, it's no problem.
You could upload them to your Google Drive and turn on link sharing for the zip you made from the cabs. (And tap on "Everybody with a link: can view", not "Everybody with a link: can edit")
Then copy the link and post it here.
Also, thanks for those links. Really useful.
Having better achieve of cool apps and games still good for even the htc hd2 would be great for WinMobile 6.5
I attempted to reply with an outline of a project I am starting, and included the links to my dropbox file of HTC HD2 software, however it was auto flagged and i cant find the technical contact form as my browser is not allowing me to scroll through all the options in drop down menus and other pages.
sorry guys! I shall return when I can and try again.
Making a online archive with every possible cab categorized in smart way is one of my dreams since when I started discovering the world of technology and modding through this wonderful OS called Windows Mobile
The websites listed in this page allows you to search on old filesharing websites.
You can still find a lot of apps on
---Emule (servers +KAD especially)
---"windows mobile" and "pocketpc" sections on softonic.com (if I'm not wrong a con is that for each cab you want to download Softonic downloads a windows installer that then downloads the cab)
---install the webarchive extension on your browser and visit every old bookmark you saved in the past with the hope that the webpage was saved on the archive)
If I had the time I'll buy some webspace and I'll archive every WinMo app! XD (I would need less GBs than a single today's laptop hdd)

Actually, just dug out an old HTC Diamond2 that was once used by a relative, I was looking for software and this has actually been pretty helpful, I'm trying to figure out what these old PDA-ish devices still can do, I know that the few that can run Linux are actually pretty well supported to this day, but this one looks pretty much obscure so far, not a miracle, but I did want to play around with it
