So the Desire is shipping now, which means that HTC is legally obligated to release the GPL parts of the source code, namely the kernel.
Does anyone know how long it normally takes HTC to get their kernel source online after a product release? Older products' source is at http://developer.htc.com.
(I want to attempt to port the kernel support for the FM radio to Nexus One).
Cheers, Hugo
I had a quick look and maybe I was being a bit blind, but is there a contact address for developer.htc.com so we can get a few e-mails into them asking when it'll be released?
In less than 60days we should have kernel source for all htc 2.1 devices currently released. Below from an HTC contact.

Hi Justin-
I was in communication with our R&D teams the other day, and they are in the process of preparing the Linux kernel for public distribution on these two devices - the current estimate is that they should be ready to go within 60 days.

I appreciate it, they are not available in the US but I still must

I have already ordered both, and they will be here within two weeks.
If you have a European contact for me that would be better on them, I

What's the holdup and what can we do about it?
It's been pointed out that as the owners of this device it's up to us to enforce the GPL.
Does anyone know how to go about applying pressure to HTC?
Anyone a member of EFF.org? I'm getting sick of feeling like HTC's bastard child.
Yeah, WTH.
I feel there's gotta be a reason. They can't just be ignoring us out of laziness... can they? I think I read somewhere that they could take up to 180 days, which seems ridiculous. It's only been 70 or something like that. In Canada anyway... it was released on 4/20.
I guess would could bombard them with phone calls and emails, but I'm sure that won't make much difference.

Surely AT&T has something to do with it, and if that's the case, a letter from xda isn't likely to move them.
Also, they aren't yet in breach, yet, right? The phone hasn't been out two months.

their typical canned response is they release within 60-90 days of device release. We're over 60 and approaching 90 for the Rogers phone
Considering AT&T had HTC lock down the bootloader, I'm sure they have also asked them to hold out on releasing source for as long as they possibly can. That is the only explanation I can think of.

My guess has been they don't want to give Apple any ammo to fight them with. So they're holding out as long as possible.

that doesn't matter. AT&T is not in control of enforcement of GPL. They don't own the code in question. AT&t isn't the culprit here I'm sure of it.
Samsung has always been much faster with source code release.
Yeah AT&T is an evil greedy company who doesn't give 2 ****s about their customers, but I'm not blaming them for this.

Well, we're all just speculating here. I'm just saying... AT&T is the only carrier to have them lock the BL ... and they've got the weight to lean on HTC to hold the source as long as possible.
Samsung has leverage HTC does not, as the Galaxy line is in enough demand that they don't need to give in to these kinds of requests.
Okay. I was going to open a new thread about this. But this is easier. Plus no new crazy thread. Subjects would be the same.
I do have a lawyer already on this. You can pm me for stuff if you want it I don't want to get his offices flooded. He wrote a lot of the commerce laws and sales laws the state of California follows today. He's also on the commerce board here in California.
The reason why my lawyer is on this is because of AT&T and their crap between a supervisor/manager and I.
Through a discovery phase;
HTC and AT&T know and are working on the SIM card issue. Yellow screen LCD display (sharps fault). The phone is Gorilla Glass. Not gorilla glass 2. And source will be released 4th of July weekend.
There's little bits of info I know that's proprietary which I can't publically post but is nice to know. Such as a device refresh time with AT&T on the one X**.

I got really pissed and sent them this, I believe it is my 7th "comment" to them. I would have made it longer but I ran out of charachters. Does anyone know where I can talk to someone from HTC directly? I need to vent and/or use some choice words.
Anyway, here is the "comment"
I'm sick of HTC trying to dance around this issue. Tell me why this site was created. It certainly is not to give developers and the modding community what they want. If you did that, there would be kernel source code for devices such as the HTC One XL. I am a kernel developer and I own the HTC One XL. I bought this device, thinking that I could create custom kernels for it, and I would learn more about it. I bought this device, knowing that HTC would post the source code, unlike some of your competitors. So far that has not happened. It has been almost two months since the HTC One XL was released.
What am I looking for, you ask? I am looking for HTC to uphold its promise that they would aid the modding community in whatever way possible. I have time and time again seen the response 90-120 days, but I know that it isn't true. There is nothing stopping you from releasing the source now. Give me a definite answer. When will it be released? All the community wants is a definite answer.

No way really? Never considered that, well except for the fact its in the g2x forum...
Doubtful there will be ice cream sandwich source released for the g2x since T-Mobile sh*t canned the phone. In order for lg to make the software, T-Mobile has to order it and pay for it. They're not gonna pay for an optional update for a phone that was nothing but problems for them. (I personally took hundreds of calls from unhappy T-Mobile customers because of this phone.. I was lucky enough to get one without issues..)
As most are already aware, the su660 and p990 sources, that were released, included the p999 info in it, except for ril. There are devs working on it and I believe they will get it...

Hi there guys,
I feel compelled to share with you my communication exercise with the ZTE Customer
Service. May it be a guideline for some on how to deal with them or a plain warning
for others how not to tread too deeply into the murky waters of China Sea. As many of
you probably know ZTE displayed their then flagship handset Grand X In at the IFA
trade show in Berlin last year. The phone's specs read among other things 16 GB
storage memory, FM Radio and NFC. Subsequent and numerous reportings from the
event proved it to be true and in accordance with ZTE's own web page. However
when the handset shipped to Europe it turned out that there is only other release
available - one with 4 GB mem, no radio, no NFC. And this is the edition I bought
from T-Mobile Poland at the end of last year. Although the phone was running stock
ICS 4.0.4 I loved it and wanted to buy another one, this time with 16 GB mem etc. So I
wrote ZTE asking as to where to get it. Then followed the exchange I make you privy
to.
The second question I asked them was the prospective availability of Jelly Bean
upgrade. It was known that Intel ported JB to x86 platform as early as last September
and that their employees were having it on their own handsets since then. So the JB
suited for Atom powered smartphones was in existence and doing fine. I naturally
mentioned this fact to ZTE while asking about their own plans to give us JB. As it
turns out ZTE condition the JB release upon a carrier or a dealer making specific
request for it and that means demand for a upgrade is based on particular sales. And
that means there will be no JB for Grand X In and other Intel based handsets in the
foreseeable future unless some devs take the matter to the heart and mind. What is
frustrating the most is some cloak of secrecy and not giving customers straight facts
from the beginning. Many of us would have thought twice about the purchase had we
known from day one we'd be dumped and support for our phone abandoned before
the year was over. I'll let you be the judge and jury. Below is the copied email
exchange in the original form. I've only removed instances of my email address and
ZTE's web page being readable (10 posts rule).

Dear Valued ZTE Customer,,
Thanks for contacting ZTE.
If you want to purchase a single unit please contact nearest dealer or any network
provider.
ZTE is not selling any product to the customer or in the market directly.
And we cannot provide you any dealer details.
End-users are advised not to upgrade their phone versions until the software is
released formally.
Regarding your inquiry, we would recommend that you'd better contact your
network operator or dealer from where you have purchased to consult.
Because the android updated is based on the demand of your local network
operator or dealer,
ZTE is not selling any device to the end user or in the market directly.
ZTE is manufacturing the handset as per the requirement of network provide and
dealers.
So it depend on the network provider or dealer that, what Android version they
need in there device.
If we want to release the new version of android we need a request from the
network provider.
Because for us they are the customer who as purchased the device from us and we
can release the new version only if we receive the request for them.
Should you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us!

Re: ZTE Grand X IN
Dear Sirs,
On January 23 I asked you two questions:
- where can I buy or order the ZTE Grand X IN with 16 GB storage memory?
- when will you deliver Jelly Bean for Grand X IN?
Two simple questions of where and when pertaining not to some rocket science
problem but to the very smartphone you manufacture yourself.
On February 19 you let me know that my "email has been forwarded to the relevant
colleagues for their appropriate handling" and that you "will respond as soon as
relevant information is available".
Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume that these "relevant colleagues" are the
ZTE employees and that you pay them monthly salaries for their "work", do you not?
So let me sum it up for you:
- ZTE is the manufacturer of the Grand X IN
- relevant ZTE employees, paid and employed by the ZTE, for two months and a
half cannot find any information where I can purchase a product manufactured by
their own company! This is ridiculous, this is pathetic! Well then, maybe they
shouldn't be working for the ZTE but for some Chinese grocery store on some street
corner in ShenZhen. And you dare to call it a customer service - this is a sad joke. A
very sad joke, a mockery and total disrespect for your own customers. And mind you I
asked you two questions, the Jelly Bean question as well. In my country all it would
take is one phone call lasting two minutes and another two to write an email to the
customer. You have a long way ahead of you...

Damn. It's sad. Really sad. I like my GXI, I really do. It's a good piece of hardware. But I would like some updates! Any updates? Bug fixes? The more Android devices I get, I end up wondering isn't Windows Phone or IOS a better way for an end user. They get updates, you know? On my iPod touch 4th gen I got 4 updates from 16th of February. 4! And when I think of all of my Android Devices?
- Motorola Milestone - 1 update after a year. And it was a crappy Froyo that was rebooting my phone...
- Motorola Flipout - no updates
- Asus Transformer TF101 - two updates - one to 4.0.3
- ZTE Grand X In - no updates
Summary? 3 updates for 4 devices. It's a fire-and-forget for most of manufacturers! You want Jelly Bean? Get a JB phone or tablet! And when Android 5.0 will hit the market - get a 5.0 phone or tablet! Damn, It's pathetic! Really. I'm trying not to get emotional about it, but it's getting really hard.

Hey guys, just giving a reminder to request the kernel source code for the s7 and s7 edge. You can do that by going to this link http://opensource.samsung.com/reception/receptionSub.do?method=inquiryView and filling in the form. For reference the flat model is SM-G930 and the edge is SM-G935. Just set the inquiry type to source code and the category to soc/application processor. For the message just put something like "request for S7 edge kernel source code". Typically Samsung releases the source code faster when they are being nagged. The sooner we get the source the sooner we can start getting to work. Hopefully my Edge gets here in the next few days

I'm not sure if they will release before March 11th, but at the very least the more people we get to request, the sooner it will be.
I've also put in a request. Hopefully more people will soon

I was just about to check! We only have the kernel source for exynos variant then so far. Hopefully they toss up the other variants by the time I wake up in the morning

Do they send you an email when it's out or do you have to keep checking?
