Is there any of these roms or apks that will allow Wired Tether or Usb internet sharing WITHOUT! having to purchase some other program. Everyone is so up in the air about wireless tethering, but I have noticed that is drains the battery so bad and the battery gets hot. Does anyone have the solution for error 67 on sprint cdma heros while tethering usb. And I have searched with to no avail.
mrfordwrench
My guess is you didnt do a search. With the "wired" tether you need the service enabled on your account. With the "wireless" tether it just works.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=656634&highlight=mns
Actually I did search, but you didnt fully read my post I guess.
I know it works with wireless tether, therefor it should work for wired.
But noone has taken the initiative with wired tether that they have with wireless tethering. Wireless would be great if it didnt drain your battery.
But you cant even have a charger hooked up with wireless tether and keep the phone going because the battery heats up. With wireless tether you have 2 radios working full speed an hence draining all the resources. With usb tethering you only have one radio working.

That is demonstrably not true.
I routinely use wireless tether, both on AC power and on battery power, and I've never noticed my phone getting unusually warm. Furthermore, I specifically use wireless tethering because it allows me to use the USB port for AC charging, which is much faster than having the phone plugged in to a USB port on a computer.
But, as far as your original question goes, all you need to do is spend some time on Google learning how to configure networking on Linux. The underlying Linux networking stack that the Android framework depends on is easily capable of acting as a router. All of the various tethering solutions, whether wired or wireless, are doing nothing that couldn't be accomplished with a few well chosen commands from a shell prompt. The apps are just putting a user friendly interface on it.
I'll admit, though, it would be nice to see a GUI app that offered ALL of the options to the user, instead of just focusing on tethering through one method...
FWIW, I have actually gone back to the 2.11_002 PRI, just to be able to use Internet Sharing. I have been in this mode for several days, and have run several different 2.1 ROMS with this PRI. Sprint TV and Sprint Navigation have been working (although I can't say that I actually use them much). Sprint Nascar and Football do not work (but I usually removed them anyways). Also Sprint does not show up on the lockscreen, but I can live without that as well, as I am already aware that Sprint is my carrier.
What I did to get this to work was to make a nandroid backup of my current setup, then wiped and flashed a ROM (DamageControlv1.1beta5 in my case) that changes the phone to the 2.11_002 PRI (had to boot twice before it showed up in settings > About phone > Software information). After this I just did a reboot into recovery, performed a wipe (data/dalvik/ext), then did a nandroid restore of my original setup.
This has been working well for me for a week or so, but YMMV. There may be some other issues associated with not having the sanctioned Product Release Instructions for my phone, but I have not come across anything yet. Perhaps developers or members with a better understanding of the difference may have some additional insight, but it is working quite well for me. I can't really offer any help or insight other that to say that it works.

Exactly what I mean.
I use easytether myself, it was a lot cheaper than pdanet. But pdanet does have the cool sms passthrough to the computer... anyways, you can use both of these for a free trial, after that it is still useable just can't access https websites (so no checking your bank, etc.) But I still use wireless tether quite often as well since I have a lot less trouble with file downloads, etc. Also, if you plug your phone usb cable into the actual phone charger that came with it instead of the computer or an aftermarket usb charger, it will charge while wireless tethering. Stock USB is only listed for 500 mA, where the one that came with the phone is 1000mA (both 5V)

Is there a way to change PRI outside of flashing a full ROM? If it requires a full ROM, how can you tell which ROM has PRI 1.68_003 (or possibly 2.10_003)? I have had 1.70_003 since I bought the phone and that one always gives me error code 67 when trying to use internet sharing. I think the other two official PRIs don't have this error. I am currently running Damage v2.05. I've read this post but I'm not sure that applies to my situation...
Ok I was using damagecontrol 2.05 before but thanks to the guidance of the responses I switched to darchlegend and now mns works with sharing.
Thanks for the all the positive and negative responses....
So I guess it has to do with what pri is installed per the Rom update.

Internet sharing works with any pri on darchlegend

Interesting...so error code 67 is not tied to the PRI...
Ok so I had Damagecontrol2.05...works great!...just cant use internet sharing.
Installed Darchlegend and it was ok...but not as good, however internet sharing works. Getting strang txt messages like from voicestream, and I am on sprint.
Voicemail wouldnt work properly. So went back to Damagecontrol2.05 for now and trying to figure out how to get internet sharing working.

When I use this at home it seems to work great. When I try and use it in my office at work it will not work. What would cause this to work in one spot and not in another. I get a signal and can talk on the phone just cannot get wireless tether to connect. Any help would be appreciated. I am on the Fresh 1.1 rom
any suggestions ?
This is really odd.
Since your phone is broadcasting a signal, the physical location of the device should have absolutly no bearing on if or if it won't broadcast.
This is a complete shot in the dark. Do you have a program that uses GPS location to kick off events? Like Locale?
Maybe the location you are at Wi Fi signal maybe getting blocked/jammed.
Not sure how stricked corp policies for you may be, but I have seen places that block Cell and Wifi signals. Especially around hazardous materials.
Are you using the same laptop/pc to access it in both places, or are you using your work laptop at work, and home pc at home?
In my case, my work laptop won't connect as they've disallowed adhoc wireless connections.

I really wish it could Spoof a standard WiFi instead of Ad-Hoc. Nintindo Wii won't connect to Ad-Hoc either and my phone is my only form of Internet at the house. I have tried in the past using ICS on my laptop with a Wireless router but I can't ever seem to get it to work. Never can get a connection to the internet.
This is slightly off-topic, but still pertaining to the subject at hand. Do you have the "phone as modem" option enabled on your phone plan? Are you using Sprint?

WiFi Tether doesn't require either of these. Simply routes the phones data through an Ad-Hoc network broadcast by the on board Wi Fi Adapater.
EDIT: Well it does require Sprint...lol. Put doesn't require "phone as a Modem" or the Tether Package...I actually don't think Sprint even offered me a Tether package.

I think Sprint has disallowed the usage of phones as modems due to heavy data usage or some such? I forget exactly what I read or where I read it, but I read something along those lines at some point.
The reason I ask is because I wonder if there is a danger of Sprint investigating my data usage, should I use too much data during one billing cycle. I believe the cap limit was something like 5 gigs before Sprint disallowed it?
I don't know exactly how much can they prove you were actually tethering, but it has been know that Sprint (or a lot of cell phone companies for that matter), do cancel accounts for over usage of data. And yes, all the sprint "unlimited" data plans are subject to a 5 GB data cap.

I heavily use my tether, I generally pull no less than 3 gigs a month. They have yet to ask any thing about it to me. Just keep it under 5 and you'll be OK. technically I don't feel I am breaking any rules, the data is going through the phone either way. I am just displaying it on my PC Screen.

Like I said, I pull 3 Gigs a month. Kind of outrageous for just a smart phone to use. I browse the web, email, and IM daily from my laptop all while tethered. 3 or 4 hours a day.
I will say that I do not download torrents/music/videos on it. That would eat up my 5 gb cap quick. Most of what I do download are smaller files I need for work from FTP sites and stuff. No file alone is more than 100 MB or so. I do not think there is a way for them to tell that you are tethered. Legally they are not allowed to capture and build your packets to see what exactly you are downloading. IE: Flash Videos and EXE files or Online Game data that the phone would have no buisness trying to use.
I don't mind the questions at all, I would hate to see your plan canceled as well. Keep in mind, what I say is only my own thoughts/oppionions/experiences and is by no means to be considered accurate.
I love discalimers.
I may put in a suggestion for WiFi Tether devs to put in a data counter that keeps track of multiple uses, not just the current one. This way you could see how much you have used over time. Currently it does show Up/Down for the current use.
Yeah, Sprint does offer a 40 dollar PAM addon, but this circumvents it by just sharing the existing connection over WiFi. Phone as modem actually initiates a different data connection entirely, and that can be detected by sprint. Since we aren't doing that though, that's how we can get away with it.
On a different note, KCarpenter, when you mentioned adhoc and your Wii, I'm wondering if you could take a DD-WRT or tomato based router and run it in wireless bridge or repeater mode with your phone. I have both at home, and one already running like that, So it should be simple to test it out tonight when I get home. Basically you just have to have the same ssid and wireless security key to do seamless handoff, and a DD-WRT or tomato based router (wrt54g by linksys or whr-hp-g54 by buffalo)

That would definitely be a nice addition to the WiFi Tether app. I believe I pulled around 200 MB the one time I tried gaming from the WiFi connection, though I can't recall for sure. If you do intend to suggest that, might you also suggest a setting to reset the counter, so that we could reset it monthly?

So I do have a wrt54g router. It is running the factory firmware, not tomatoe. Not sure how all that works. I will need to do a little more research on that. If you wouldn't mind testing it out for me, that would be freakin awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just need to get my son into the Wii Shop so that he can spend the gift card he got for it.
Also as far as flashing the tomatoe firmware. I have been unsuccessful at resetting the Admin password on that router. I haven't been able to change the settings on it for months and really just kind of gave up. can I flash it with out having the password? The reset doesn't seem to work on it, just flashes the power light repeatedly until I let off of the reset pin.

Well, there are several flavors of the WRT54G, and they vary a lot on what you can do with them. If you've got JUST the WRT54G and not the 'S' model, then depending on what version that your router is, you can put different versions of DD-WRT on it. Only the versions of it prior to v5 (you can see the version on the bottom) are compatible with tomato firmware.
I've got two of the WRT54G, one V5 and one V8. They both run DD-WRT micro, and I used both of them for a long time, but lately I was having some troubles with them (one had a lan port burn out) and a couple weeks ago, something else happened to the main one which I'm not sure of yet.
Anyway, the best WRT54G is the one with the 'L' after it (for Linux), which has tons of onboard RAM and is designed to run linux firmware like DD-WRT and Tomato.
For Tomato, the best router to run it on is the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 (which I just purchased this week) It can be had from Newegg for less than 60 bucks, which isn't too bad. It's an awesome router, and I like Tomato much better.
In order to reset your password though, you'll need to do a long reset. This will consist of holding your reset button in for over 30 seconds. I think that should work. Try it, and if it doesn't work, let me know and I can pull out my trusty guide and explain
Either way, I'll try it tonight and let you know. I'm curious now anyway too. But just so you know, there is no possible way you can do it with stock Linksys firmware. one of the cool things of both Tomato and DD-WRT is their ability to set up wireless bridge/repeater modes to utilize multi routers on one SSID. It's handy to do wired ethernet downstairs on the Xbox 360 and other devices, when the main router is upstairs.

Well, when you think of it that way, it actually should be legal. Because you pretty much are just displaying it on your screen. Well, if you're torrenting then then that is a different story... but you shouldn't torrent with a tether either lol.
But back to the OP's question: It's a slight possibility, but the frequency that you're tethering at may be congested. This happened to my one day ago when I bought a new router. It was set to broadcast on Channel 6. I got perfect signal in my room, but could not connect. I changed the Channel to 10, and was then able to connect just fine. I don't think you can change the broadcast channel on Wireless Tether, so you may have to use something like PDANet that tethers using a USB cable. That way, you'll avoid the whole congestion problem.
EDIT:
Just read that you're having trouble resetting your router. I've been messing with firmware and such on my WRT54G recently. I've found a fool-proof way to reset it. Basically, leave all the cables plugged in. Then, hold the reset button for about one minute. After the minute, while still holding the reset button, pull out the power cord. Once the power cord is out, release the reset button. Plug the power cable back in, and it should be reset

FYI, You can definitely change the channel within the wireless tether app.
Hey all,
Unfortunately, I just got done testing DD-WRT in repeater bridge mode, and it's not going to work with the Hero. For one, it will only join with a router that is in AP mode. Since Wireless Tether operates only in Adhoc mode, we're screwed.
There's an enhancement request on the Wireless Tether project page, and I updated it with my hopes of one day being able to run repeater bridge, but from what I was reading it looks like someone might have to rewrite the wifi driver to be able to do it anyway.
In any case, Adhoc mode only allows peer to peer connections, so it's not even capable of performing anything in infrastructure mode, which is what I was hoping it would do.
So, it's the wireless mode holding us back, not DD-WRT. Soon enough though, keep up the hope!

You shouldn't have a data cap on a phone. I thought that was on broadband cards only. They assume there is no way you can use over 5th on a phone browser, their mistake. I am on unlimited data plan, and it is just that, unlimited. Also, I used my bberry for internet tethering for a long time, and never saw an extra charge. If they could tell, they could control it. Some phone come locked out of Pam, if they are not, then they shouldn't be able to tell. I've have used smartphone. for mobile internet for a long time and have never been charged.
I have a tp2 on verizon. When i plug in the phone if i choose Internet Connection Sharing will i be charge the extra phone as modem fee by verizon, or is it like the wifi router in it being free?
I think they are going to charge you unless you run the silent teather thing. I think it was called ICSInstall.CAB. Ive been using the usb teather for a while since installing that and have not seen any charges.
Although thats one of the things Im concerned about with the new verizon mr2. Im hoping that still works without getting nailed by the big V.

The tethering in Energy Rom does not let verizon see you tethering. I have used his rom recently and have tethered with no additional charges on my bill. I have even used it to play games online. You can surf safely using your TP2.
I can't say with 100% certainly but I believe you can use WiFiRouter as well. It's pretty slick. You run it and connect to the internet then you can connect to it with any other wifi device. It does have encryption as well so you can create a secure (well, semi-secure) hotspot. Pretty quick too. I found this thread which has lots of user feedback if your interested:

Can I do that wirelessly?
Also would want to just using usb cable for one pc and pdaNet software so wifi signal would not show on my pc, is that possible?

Go ahead and root it, you can always go back. Ultimately all your doing is unlocking phone to have it do what you want. You'll have access to more apps and utilities on the market.
The only way I know to do what you're asking is with PDAnet. They charge a 1 time fee, and it works pretty well.

ATT charges extra for both unltd. data and tethering for general retail. (I have a corp. discounted account, and somehow still have unltd data, but I had that since before the change - I threatened to leave with the other 2 lines if they didnt I couldnt keep it - I dont have tethering since that was a feature that came later.)
At first tethering was free if you could do it. That was true even in the time of flip phones. With the right cable, and understanding of how the devices worked with each other, could do anything from upload media to (with the right drivers) set up a dial up connection in XP using the phone as the modem. GPRS was not fast, it was only practical in limited applications. 3G in general changed that. Once the average user was able to do their variety of average things, which really does use a lot of bandwidth, not like heavy torrent user, but still, enough if they use it often, carriers started making the software to support charging for the ability. The problem is that each phone has to do it differently since they dont have easy ways to delineate; carriers arent allowed to look at the data to truly know what it came from, even based on protocol alone, you cant tell anymore. So now they are slowly working out ways to lock down their devices, which come from too many manufacturers. Some of whom just dont get it. Really. (*cough* HTC)
I have been using the Samsung Captivate for a little over a year, which in itself is a small miracle, I mean, a YEAR, actually 14 months!
The reason why is that the hardware is great. This is the unbrickable phone! And I don't mean through handy gadgets, or ripping the phone apart and doing microsurgery, I mean no matter what stupid thing you do playing with roms, including pulling the USB cable out mid-process, the core BIOS is still fine 99% of the time. Whats more, is that when the phone first came out the tethering was totally open, and ANY user could just use KIES to get online. Soon after that a firmware update for the phone included the pieces necessary to charge to tether. Then I started trying the different ROMS, or was it before? I use Serendipity 6.3 because it seems to be the only thing that works reliably, and doesnt look like crap. Which is really a shame! But it is the lightweight ROM with root access, and innate tethering, and honestly, I never wanted anything else but some angry birds. Ok so the google platform, and my exchange account had to all work too. Serendipity it was, and no, could never seem to get 7 working well.
The thing is, I dont like having even to use another app to tether, which is a bit ideological. I basically refuse to pay more to use the phone when its connected to my computer. I dont want to compromise in any way on this, and using an application that is not the phone's OS uses other resources when it otherwise would not (RAM + CPU = battery use = ). And because ehh, Samsung/Att bloatware isnt that cool, custom boot ROMS are. Although no gf ever thought it was that cool waiting for me to get one of them on... Well I would be annoyed if that was a compromise, but who would want to go look at leaves anyway? #Winning!
Seriously though, to me it comes down to its has to be simple, and I dont want to charge my phone 8 times a day for simple! Have you guys seen the size of this screen! Thats not even practical. Id hate to walk around with that in my pants. But since I am due for an upgrade, Im just going to wait until the thanksgiving sales to see if anything else comes out (which I doubt). Looking at the Skyrocket, it's a beast. For one thing this phone has "4G speeds delivered by HSPA+ (with enhanced backhaul)" which means it can go REALLY REALLY fast like 1-2mb/s not mbps, Mb down. Thats like little fios in my pocket! and theres a 1850 mAh battery stock (better if your going to make me carry around a small table top!) which there really is no way around with a 1.5ghz dual core, 1gb or RAM and a WVGA screen.
Personally I really liked the concept of smaller handset with a tablet/netbook to dock in, but apparently I was alone there. And HTC just doesnt make nice devices, sorry, but Samsung is just a much larger company, and it seems the better motorola phones are still coming out for V so for Att, Samsung it is.. At least they're easy to root.
So I got my letter from ATT the other day saying that they have detected tethering software on my phone and that if I dont remove it by 12/31/12 they will automatically bump me up to the 5GB tethering plan for $50/mo
Whats the best way to resolve this and still be able to run custom roms? Ideally I would still like to be able to tether for free (obviously) but at the very least just be able to not pay the $50/mo and still run custom roms.
I spoke with a customer service rep and told her I had no idea how to tether and asked if they could just put a block on it or something, and she said no, the software has been detected and it has to be removed.
Maybe I should call back and ask for supervisor?
Alternatively she said if I go into the att store and they can look at my phone and see that there is no tethering software, they can make a notation on my account.
So I suppose I could unroot, go into att store, have them note the account, and then root again.... that would probly be my last resort.
Thanks in advance for any help!
No, you do understand the second you tether they can detect it right? They also aren't idiots and can tell if you're running a custom ROM as well
I've heard about Verizon reps commenting about custom ROMs before
So you flashing back to stock and showing them there's nothing on the phone does nothing.
If you don't want to be charged then stop

I disagree, because if they make a notation on the account and they have proven that they can't find any programs or software to remove when I bring the phone into the store, then there is no way they can charge me.
But even if I didnt want to tether (which I have not tethered in quite a while and still got the letter) it would see to me that they are detecting the software (rom) and seeing that I have the ability to tether, so how do I run a custom rom (and not tether) and still not get charged?

They wouldn't make a notation on the account because tethering is possible with the stock software, there's quite a few apps on the market that allow this. So you could just uninstall it.
You didn't get the letter because of the custom ROM, you got it because you violated your contract by tethering. It may have taken them some time to send out the letter.
They have detected it so they will be watching for future violations
So my suggestion stays the same, stop tethering or pay for it
Pretty simple

What Phil said although you may not agree with att's rules on tethering...its in the contact and you signed to it so you will get taken off your plan and to the 5gb plan if you continue
Gotcha, thanks for the input guys.
I am fairly new to ATT (came from Sprint)
Does this apply to wired tethering as well? Does someone using wired tether (such as pdanet) still have to pay, or is that free?
The way I think they catch people is # of hops it does to terminate data and packet sniffers so I'd just stay away even though pda may be a bit safer will LTE around theyre hunkering up
For the sake of mentioning this--its a topic which has been raked over in every phone forum, Android, Apple etc nd tablets too.
Doing a general and specific search on the Net seems to point to mostly theory. When I owned my previous iPhones and jailbroke, I used MyWi. However, the devs made it clear you could be caught.
That notion aside-many of us and this includes me, believe it comes down to being abusive with the tethering. Of course many would disagree but if you cared to specifically search iPhone sites and focused mostly on AT&T, it somewhat became clear they knew we were tethering since algorithms change when tethering. In conjunction, we also surmised they went after people who had unlimited data plans and really used the heck out of it.
I personally have tethered many times and many people I know too but we didn't use it too long. I've never gotten a notice from ATT but it doesn't mean they aren't watching. Not be be a jerk but your op is a topic I've seen literally hundreds of times. Everyone claims the same thing but no one seems to admit they abuse it. They noticed you for a reason is what it comes down to. I should also mention I've tethered my HOX as well.
In my personal opinion I believe we should be able to get a free amount of gigabytes to tether. Once over it, then you get charged. This is just a real touchy subject.
These are just my opinions.

I tethered without a tethering plan for years, first on my jailbroken iPhone and then on my HOX until I switched to the Mobile Share plans that include tethering. I never got caught, but I was also very careful not to abuse it by, for example, streaming video, moving large files, or doing things that a phone would never do untethered like updating my laptop's software.
I am convinced, from watching this issue over the years, that AT&T does two things: They mainly go after the data hogs, flagging people for tethering detection when they get close to or over their data caps; they also run spot checks on random accounts. Detecting tethering, should you get their attention, is dead simple, by the way. There are any number of ways to confirm it.
Once you're on their radar screen, the jig is up. Your only choices are to stop tethering or get a tethering plan.
Whats up, this is my first thread posted here, so my apologies in advanced if something isn't right.
I'm a long time android user with a decent amount of experience rooting and applying hacks. I'm not a programmer or anyone who has found any glitches hacks my self, so my skill level is probably around the 'Script Kiddy' level, maybe a little better.
Since the intro of Google Fi, I've given up on rooting non stock Android phones. I usually only rooted so that I could install CM or ASOP based roms. Since my old Nexus 6p and new Pixel 2 XL are native to android I never needed to root them. And for my Nexus, which is rooted - it was just for ****s and giggles. Fast forward a couple months, and I've moved. The only coverage I can get with any carrier is Verizon. Because I work from home, having a fast and stable connection is my lifeline.
Right now, I've got my N6P running Resurrection Remix with Magisk Root velcroed to my wall next to my router. It runs a USB tether to my Asus router and then the router distributes the connection to all my devices and what not as it should.
(For anyone wondering if this works, YES IT DOES, very well. Setting it up in the Asus router FW is like 2 clicks and done.)
(sorry for long intro)
So my two questions for the community are:
Does anyone know of a proven/recent method of using root to rerout USB tether traffic to the devices Phone data vs tether data. I've tried using the USB tether app by Fabio Grasso. It didn't seam to make any difference in the speed of my connection (I had to get a WeBoost cell booster to get those full LTE bars. That helped a lot with the consistency of the connection). That being said, I've only been running this setup for less than a week, so it might be too early for me to see where my data was counting with VZW (Red H**ler). The things that are really important to this, is that It has to provide a USB tether that uses the native tether drivers, like the default USB tether app in android - there's no way to install USB drivers to a router. Any help on this would be super awesome! VZW gives me 22gb of Phone data, after 22gb it will only get throttled IF there is network congestion. That is unlikely in my area. Otherwise I will be stuck with 15gb of tether data and a hard throttle to 600k after that...
Is there a kernel that I can flash to my N6P that can help with battery life? maybe a way to reduce the number of cores that are in use? I noticed that it struggles keeping up with battery charge. My train of thought is that because the device has been repurposed to a fullblown cell modem, it doesn't need anything fancy. Like all I want, is data... so maybe underclocking the CPU??? I'm just not sure because it seams like its already doing nothing because it just sits on my wall plugged into the router.
Thanks for the help!! Also, I'm not offering payment, so don't consider this a paid request. But because this is really important to my lifestyle and work, I would gladly send 250 ETN to anyone who can provide a real solution or point me in the right direction .
Also to any Admins. If rewards are strictly prohibited, please comment before removing. I will gladly remove that part.:good:
