Best WM device to run android? - General Topics

Hi,
I am looking into buying an android device, running 2.1 and not with the high price of nexus one, and it seemed to me i have no choice.
So, I was wondering buying a WM device and dual booting could also be cool.
But what device is good for this job.
ie. the device developers are mostly active on it, has 3d enabled and....
thanks

raphael, diamond, topaz, rhodium are not too expensive and all have decent linux support.

Along with those mentioned above, I would include the Vogue. It was the first to have a fully functional android port, and still is better that topaz and rhodium(not sure about the diamond)

Changing my Jasjar to what?

What device do you recommend?
I ve been using Jasjar since realesed. And I would like to move to a new one but don't know which one to choose. I was waiting for HTC Omni but no colse or near ralease date.
Please give me any idea of which device to chose that is similar in qualities especially the big screen.
Best Regards....
do you have any specific requirements. The HTC advantage seems a worthy replacement for the universal.
A device with 3.5" display that fit in pocket
Thank you for your quick respose.
Don't you think The HTC advantage is a bit big and bulky? Additionally 5" screen is too big. I think 3.5 " inch screens might fit nicely in my pocket.
If you were using HTC advantage device, please tell me your experince with it. And would it be easy to move from Universal with WM6.1 device to it.
I am looking for a device that 3.5" display with as much additional features as possible. Like GPS, FM, 5MP Camera, big RAM, and so on.
Best Regards

Most of those requirements can be covered by the Kaiser, but the screen is less good.
I am realy currently considering Kaiser & other devices. But screen size is important to me. What about the processor speed? (Qualcomm® MSM 7200, 400MHz) compaired with Universal ( Intel Bulverde 520 MHz processor)!!!! I don't know which one is faster.
Additionally, any body know anything about HTC Omni when will it be released?

The kaiser is fast, and with the driver update suposedly arriving soon, it'll get better. I can't pass any judgements as I have only used a universal for a few minutes. There are no HTC devices (other than the uni) that have a VGA screen... (theres the athena and the shift but they are to big for pockets.)

Note that its keyboard is WAY worse than that of the Universal - even that of the new x7510 version.

And the Shift isn't really a WinMo device either - its WinMo module is only used to set up connections, nothing else.
I was using the Shift as an example of the maximum screen size on anything that uses Windows Mobile as an OS.
Some of the Toshiba devices have an 800*480 screen (the G900 for exampl) but I have no idea what they are like to use.
Any Other Device
Any Other Device that you recomend I can change to other than thos mentioned?

Make sure you read my MWC posts - I've posted (and will post - prolly today) quite much on the latest (W)VGA announcements.

How is android on Kaiser these days? the Raph100 build is good, but could be so much better

Touch HD or Omnia2

Hay guys,
I am getting a new PDA, I have tytn now and it has served me good.
Could you give me your look on this two models, I am thinking about Samsung, since it has much better specs and display, but I got used to touchflo 3D interface a lot...
Is it possible to put it on Omnia?
Your answer will be appreciated and will help me decide what to buy.
Thanks!
There is one added value for choosing HD
The sup`port of this fantastic site!!
Just because of that I´ll choose HD even if omnia has better specs...
Yes, that is bothering me too...
Well if you're not gonna flash your device or use Touch Flo 3D or any other ported software, than get Omnia 2.
You will still be able to get support in this forum. Most of the issues of non-HTC devices can be supported/solved without the need to correspond to an HTC device.
You could use TouchFlo 3D on your Omnia 2 if its WVGA. However as mentioned above the support provided by this site significantly exceeds that of any site that supports the Omnia. To be completely honest, if you havent bought your device yet you should consider the Touch Diamond II. The reasoning behind this is i read an article somewhere mentioning that devices without a windows button will not get an official WM6.5 ROM or something stupid like that (Correct me if im wrong).
Ill be upgrading from my Tytn to an Omnia2
I agree that HTC gets great support here but Hardware and capability wise there is nothing to compare with the omnia2 on the horizon.
AMOLED screen, headphone jack,tv-out,5mpx cam with dual flash....what more could anyone possibly want?

A forum specialized like this for that device!!!
Hmm, the Touch HD vs Omnia II i8000.
Well, lets face it, this is a question of 'XDA support' or 'No XDA support'. Specs-wise, the i8000 has the Touch HD crushed completely (as have been the case with all new Samsung models; HTC hasn't updated their specs in forever).
Personally, if you ask me for a choice between those two models, I would go with the i8000. The main reason I love XDA support is that it makes the interface looks better and it makes the software faster, but from what I see, the i8000 is already plenty fast and it looks very, very good. Furthermore, the i8000 has support forums too (though not on the level of XDA), so any deficiency may be corrected by its own forums anyway.
The idea of choosing a WM device based on software seems very silly to me. One can find a CAB for just about any Windows Mobile software (including, yes, TouchFlo 3D), so transition between WM devices based on software is very simple. If anything, the i8000 should be more appealing software-wise as Samsung put a lot of amazing software on it that has not been ported to other devices yet.
Always buy for the better specs and design. Never buy for the software support. Buy for the software that is already provided.
Any extras can be found on other fan sites and other non-htc developers. Therefore the Omnia 2 is a much better choice.
Besides there are plenty of software that are created that supports non-htc devices, and there are also software that are created specifically for non-htc devices.
Furthermore alot of the technical problems are Windows Mobile based and not always HTC based.
The only 2 reasons to get HTC devices is 1) if you prefer the design and the specs of HTC and 2) if you want to flash your ROM.
HTC devices are easily flashed to a different ROM, but hey man not everyone uses ROMs... I don't ever use ROM's...
Therefore Omnia 2 is a perfect choice if you don't flash your ROM...and point number 1 shows that HTC Touch HD is outdated....so therefore get Omnia 2 if you don't flash your ROM....
Think about it mate.

a zooming ability on the video camera (while filming)
also, can it play divx/xvid movies like the HD can with coreplayer?
i download movies and dont have to re-encode them, just drag, drop, play. (...generally, unless there was some esoteric encoding used)
mark
I have the same dilemma. I am about to replace my Sony Ericsson W960i with a proper PDA and I am taking into account both, Touch HD and Omnia II.
Similarly I would like to have a Touch Flo 3d interface on my device and therefore I was keener on HTC Touch HD at first. However since it is possible to get a Touch Flo 3d onto all WinMo devices (as I deduced from 8525Smart's post)

I rather buy Omnia.
And here it comes to questions:
1. Are my assumptions concerning getting Touch Flo 3d onto Omnia correct?
2. Could anyone explain to me this ->

What does it mean to"flash your ROM" and how is it useful? Isn't it simply upgrading/updating the ROM?
I'd be grateful if you could help
well livegod guess what ! omnia2 has zooming while taking videos with its awesom camera
and the touch player can support almost 99% of all my downloaded and converted movies
as for the TF3D .. i love the new one and i cant seem to find it anywhere to be installed on my omnia2
i hate the widgets... makes the phone looks like a toy so i am using spbmobile shell + pointui
i'am from germany and I have the same problem.....
But here I can buy the Omnia in a few month....:-(
But what is whith the HTC LEO????????
Touchwiz 2.0 quite simply covers up WM 6.1 SO thoroughly on the Omnia II, it's almost like you're not using a Windows phone. The Omnia II is definitely the better pick unless you REALLY want ROMs to flash. Then wait for the Whitestone or Firestone or whatever HTC have next.
omnia camera is far better than the HD2
especially the video recording
the HD2 dont have a chance
but i dont care about the video recording so i will get the HD2
HD2, wins every time. You can flash what ever you want (when hspl comes out!), why would you ever want an omnia?
Hands down the HD2 (Leo). PPC of the year so far!
Samsung Omnia 2 place...
I'm a Forum XDA user for a long time.
It helped me a lot with my old HTC Wizard.
I was quite worried about buying an Omnia2 and losing the Forum support. But HTC HD cannot win O2 in SPECS.
About support... boys I have to admit.
For Omnia2 (that is not a HTC device) the best software and tweaks and amazing ROMs can be found on MODACO (sorry boys, but I have to say).
If you own an HTC device don't even consider getting there. The best place is here!!!
Concerning the TouchFlo3D, there are many versions available on MODACO. There's even a HTC HD2 like ROM with Sense 2.5
Thanks!

Hard to decide between three phones

X10, N900 or HD2.
So now I need you guys and gals to help me solve this problem; which one to buy ? Last one I had was Kaiser, and it was god awful, but I loved it anyway and HTC made phones has got this site as a plus side and ehh... TOO HARD
just a good list of pros and cons would be good because I don't know any of them, since I have been out of this scene for a long time and haven't had time to follow any reviews. Has there been any problems with drivers or anything with any of those phones ? How is the build quality etc, can I upgrade X10 to A2.2 ?
Personal experiences are more than welcome, specially if you have tried all three phones.
like a hard keyboard: N900 runs with Linux and nice interface
wanna play around with an easy interface: X10 running android combined with sony ericsson games and apps
like a big screen with big processor: out of the three i would go with this devices because of it's big screen making it good for watching movies and browsing xda also it is very fast with it's 1Ghz processor!
I would go for Leo with no doubt as it´s HTC and very powerful device with nice big screen!
Have a look here to make a detailed comparision
Can I upgrade Android like Winmo ? Just flash it and it's done ? I read somewhere that this isn't like in WinMo and I would hate to wait until SE releases new version to their devices : / And I also read that there is some hardware related multitouch issue with X10 ?

Android is a bit different in that you have to obtain 'root access' before flashing a custom ROM - think 'run as administrator' on a PC. You also get a recovery partition which you can flash and put enhanced features on, which can be nice.
Basically, once you get root and flash a HardSPL then you can flash a new ROM as easily as WM - easier in fact, as you normally do it by SD card.
Anyway, you won't be able to flash a HardSPL or a custom ROM until that root is available, which it currently isn't for the X10 (although it's only a matter of time, really).

[Q] Switch between Android, Win Phone 7, and WinMo 6.5 on the same device?

hi guys,
I'd like to know if it possible because I've been using my Xperia x1 for about a year and i think it's time for a change but when I checked all the available phones I got confused a little.
it seems like Windows phone 7 looks great but in a review i saw somewhere it says that it lacks some important features such as:
No Bluetooth file transfers
No USB mass storage mode
No multitasking
No copy/paste
No Flash or Silverlight support in the web browser
No DivX/XviD video support
No internet tethering support
Swapping memory card requires hard reset; cards not readable by computer
and Android has great features but IMO I think WinMo gives more freedom in the terms of using or hacking
and as a WinMo 6.5 user I find it a great OS with all the features needed and if there some feature I want that is not already offered it's available here on XDA-Dev either as a .cab or cooked in a ROM
So the Main Question: if I buy a Sonyericsson (X10 maybe) or a HTC with a 1 GHz Processor will I be able to install any OS of them as a ROM???
Thanx in advance.
The only device capable of running WP7 is the hTC Leo and it has actually working Android and some working on Ubuntu and Maemo as well.
not any other device will be capable to do so
Thanx for reply
So the HD2/Leo is able to handle all 3 OSs
but i have more questions please
how is the HD2 up to date regarding the specs? like the RAM, ROM, and processor
can there be 2 OSs in the same time and to be able to switch between them?
and does android 2.2 froyo work 100% i mean with everything working??
thanx again

I'm intreagued, what about the duplo phone looks great to you?
The basic HD2 specs are up to date on paper (RAM, ROM, processor) and even beat some newer phones but dig deep and you'll see the latest version of the chips are better. Android 2.2 is running perfectly but WP7 is still work in progress.
It's more than a year old but still the best phone EVER.
