I have a rooted X and use wireless tether for wifi. I am traveling to South Africa next month and was wondering if it would still work over there. My first thought was that it would not because there would be no verizon signal (data) available there but funny enough my wireless tether still worked when i put my phone on airplane mode so i am confused. Does wireless tether not use verizon "signal" to supply the wifi? Does anyone know for sure if it will work overseas? Thanks
I'm not sure i understand, but wifi (like bluetooth) is local if you have two devices connected over wifi in the USA, it will work anywhere else in the world?
The action of tethering allows for example a laptop to use the internet connection of your mobile. The wifi itself does not supply internet access it merely connects the two devices.
Your mobile's radio has internet access through GRPS/3G...etc. and this access to provided for the laptop through wifi.
btw wrong section, this is "Android Software and Hacking General", use Questions & Answers next time. It will yield better results, faster.

Thank you, i think you answered my question. maybe i just didnt word it correctly. You say that the wireless tether app allowes my computer or ipad to run of my mobile internet so if i go outside the US were there is no 3G mobile signal, there is obviously no mobile internet to "beem" out to my ipad. Do i have that right? i was just confused way my phone, through wireless tether was still able to supply and internet connection to my ipad when it was in airplane mode.
I will also post my questions in the right section next time. Thanks for the heads up
Yes you have that right. But not only the US has 3G signal, south africa depending on the region probably has mobile internet too, but i would buy a sim card from their carrier in southafrica, because data roaming costs a fortune.

Sounds like the thing to do but as far as i know the droid x is not a international phone like the droid 2 global and would probably not be able to take a sim card
It probably takes the simcard, but might need a different modem/radio to work down there.
Hi all I'm on my bone stock Nexus S 4G. Trying to tether via wifi hot spot or Usb and cant seem to stay online or even keep a 4G signal. When online I'm not even running at 3G speeds. My 4G icon on the notification bar is grey ATM and 3g is lit up. seems to go back and forth. even just left on 3g dosent have any speed at all online. I can go online via usb and easy tether apk everything seems to be perfect 4G and 3G.
With that said I can light up my epic4G and lock 4G and fly online any ideas on what gives?
Thanks, by the way love the new Nexus but I really need this to work, as my wife is to be getting my Epic Tomorrow. Thanks alot

I think for the stock hotspot to work you will need the Tethering feature added to your Sprint Account. Dont quote me on that because I dont have the tethering feature on my account to test that theory.
What worked for me though was to root the phone and then install WiFi tether either from the Android Market or you can google the APK
After you gain root and install wifi tether, just turn on 4G and get a stable connection and then setup and turn on WiFi tether which will create a AdHoc connection that other Wifi devices will then beable to see and youll be good to go.
Thanks, with our new NS4G the sprint hotspot does work despite the fact that we do not pay for the add on. With that said I can post and creep online but for streaming vid or anything that requires 3G/4G speed isnt going to happen. I was hoping to see if anyone els had experienced this issue or is on the hotspot and able to run any type of speed.

Every time I run the hot spot app built into the OS, my connection is dissabled. I take it thats because I dont have the feature on my account which cost like $25-$30
So just root and use wifi tether and that provides the exact same thing as the hotspot built in to the OS.
Hello all, i want to have access to wifi at work (dads bakery) there is no wifi signal there, is there other alternatives to have access to wifi? im not familiar with this things do i have to buy something portable to have it i do have 3g with t-mobile on my phone.
not sure what type of phone you have, but you can tether your "phone internet" to your transformer.
i just did it while on a road trip from my wife's old Palm treo Pro i connected via bluetooth tether
If you have an android phone, you can try to use the Bluetooth tethering option, which doesn't require rooting the phone. If you do a search on the forums, someone made a nice step by step guide for it. The bluetooth option never worked for me so I had to end up rooting my phone and then downloading wifi tether. Downside is it makes your phone really hot and can cause it to crash or turn off. I'm super ghetto so I have the back case off my phone leaned up against a fan hahahahaha....keeps it at a nice 79 degrees instead of 110 degrees.
I'm not an expert at these things either, I just looked for guides on this forum and also youtube. Took me a couple of days to get it all working. Goodluck!
You could try a wireless 'hotspot' from one of the wireless broadband providers too.

Does your dad's bakery have internet at all? If he has broadband there you could just setup a wireless router.

Depends on how much you use your TF for that purpose but 200MB is very little. Becareful about getting charged overages.
Hello,
I was curious if performing an S-Off on my Sensation 4G would allow me to create a hotspot and tether?
I currently don't have a hotspot/tether plan with T-Mobile, but I've heard there are many ways around it.
I tried searching for the keywords "hotspot" and "tether" in the "Q&A" section but the posts were from before AlphaRevX & unrevoked's S-Off came out.
Does anyone know if this is possible and if so do you have any recommendations?
Thank you,
lilhugo

theres a app called android tether in the market or search google it works i have it on my girls hd2 not on my sensation because i have a tether plan
Doesn't under 'Settings - Wireless & networks', turning on 'Portable Wi-Fi hotspot' not essentially tethering out your phone's internet to whatever device connects wifi to it?
I had someone try this on an ipad2 but claim it was very slow.
I use the USB tethering setting to whatever device that can recognize the internet connection via usb...but things like tablets usually don't take usb like for that.
That's exactly what I had to do today.

Internet at the office was down so I lent them my Sensation to use as wifi hotspot for the rest of the week.
I haven't installed any special software for it, so I'm pretty sure I could have done that before S-OFF.

if you have tmobile us that comes out off your data plan so if you reach or someone else the max data you will get throttle so watch who you lend your wifi sevice to
Okay cool.
Thanks for the info guys. I was curious... Why have a tether plan if you can just use "Wireless tether for Root Users" instead of paying for the tethering plan??
Thanks again,
lilhugo

Why not just use the built-in hotspot app or tethering function?
Or does T-Mobile block that stuff in the US?

Not to worry. As you can see, I live in Sweden and I have no superficial limit on my data plan. Also, they only use it to surf and check emails.
Nope, I was using wifi tether the day I bought the phone long before S-off. The function has always been there for Tmo US. And you don't need a tether plan, just the data plan which is required anyway.
It has always been under the, Settings/Wireless/Portable Wifi hotspot.
Just set a password and ssid and enable the hotspot and connect your laptop, tablet ect.. and off you go!!

See attached photo of notification from Tmobile that popped up on my Sensation (rooted, using the native Android tethering functionality)
List of phones I used for tethering in the past without getting in trouble:
Touch pro 2 via bluetooth and USB (was told at the time by tmo that there was no fee for tethering)
HD2 via bluetooth, wifi and USB (winmo and Android)
MyTouch 4g via wifi-tether (got a notice while downloading a 167MB custom ROM a month ago while driving Owned the MyTouch for 9 months without a notice, and i tethered many times a week. Even Skype video calls, and Netflix on a couple occasions)
Just got popped on my Sensation today with the attached notice. It came through "Push" messaging. I can't find where to view any previous pushed messages, but I took a screen capture before i navigated away. I think i was only watching a couple YouTube vids that were embedded in a page at 360p quality. I hadn't been tethering when the message hit my phone. It was an hour or two late.
You do have to pay if they catch you. Last month they didn't add anything to my bill. My impression is that they are starting to watch the network for signs of tethering (bittorrent would be an easy example) Or large 167MB files. They threaten to shut your connection off during tethering or severely throttle.
If you're doing light browsing on occasion, you should be fine. I'm still mad that I have a 5GB cap on 3g/4g (i average about 2GB) where they'll throttle me down to Edge if I exceed that cap. That doesn't really bother me. I don't mind the cap. Just let me tether occasionally under that cap for free. Sometimes i need to send files on my laptop to someone. Or i need the big screen for a few minutes to type a word doc to send out. It's not worth $10-15/month extra. I still have the cap to keep me honest...
The issue really came up when the Tmobile G2 was released a year ago as the first phone to take advantage of HSPA+. That's the first i ever heard of tethering requiring a special plan.
My hotspot does not work now with the stock ROM based on the new Sensation 2.3.5 leaked RUU with sence 3.5.
can anyone else with this rom or custom sence 3.5 ROM check and see if the hotspot works (to share the mobile internet)
Or anyone know how to fix? I downloaded wifi tether from the market and it conects to the PC but doesnt connect to the internet..
thanks in advance for any help.

Not sure this is right place for your troubleshooting question. Try asking in a thread where the ROM is being discussed... This thread is more about not having to pay Tmo for the privilege of tethering. Most of us have a data cap (2GB or 5GB) and we want to use it up without being told which device has to be the end user of that data. Tmo is trying to make sure people don't abuse the network with high demand like replacing a home internet connection.
But, here's my advice:
Make sure you are getting a data connection on the phone. Then make sure the PC is truly getting an IP (not a private IP that usually starts 169.x.x.x i think?), it should be 192.168.x.x. If you have trouble still, try disabling the security [WEP or WPA] in the tethering app. Then see if you can connect. If you can after disabling security, then you might need to tweak the security settings in the app, and replicate them on the PC to get secure again. I don't have that ROM, so i can't be of more help.
Thanks for the reply, I would put it in the Rom thread, but don't have enough posts to do that yet.......

Tmous action against tether
Ok. Now Tmo has gone farther. I posted earlier in this thread about their notices against tethering. Now they've gone a step further. I was tethering this morning and uploading a 55MB youtube video from my laptop. I got another push message warning me against tethering without the add-on plan and then my upload failed. I tried to pull up google.com on my laptop, and it went to a tmobile page encouraging me to add the tether option to my monthly plan. (see attached).
I am rooted and even just installed a 3rd party app for tethering by barnacle. Somehow Tmo still figured it out. The worst part is i could email the 55MB (via gmail) to my phone and then I could upload it to youtube via 3g/4g on my phone. This would cost Tmobil data twice (once each way to my phone).
I'm not asking to abuse my internet connection (i'm capped at 5gb/month anyway, then EDGE speeds after that). On my phone, I could easily watch Netflix for a few hours and Skype video conference all day long, and tax their network like crazy. But even with tethering, i've only used 1-2 GB per month. Maybe I'll send the video to my dropbox, then download it to my phone, and upload it from there. F*%k you Tmo! I'm buying 5GB/month, let me used it on my 15" screen with a full keyboard! I'm not asking for unlimited high speed data to replace my DSL (yeah, i know DSL is no faster than my 4G. It's better at my house than my tmo connection though).

You have got to be kidding me .. what next?
I have never had this problem with tmous. I regularly tether laptops, tablets and ipods to my Sensation with no issue/message. Heck, I moved into my new apartment a few months ago, and while I didn't have internet, I tethered my xbox to my sensation and played on that. HSPA+ was more than fast enough to give me no lag while pwning n00bs.
I have to say, after 8 Android phone, I found my favorite. I have an issue now tho. I was with Att for years but I just switched to TMobile to help out a family member. Att gets much better service in my area. I know I can unlock, root and what not but is there a way to connect to an Att tower with my TMobile Sim, maybe force it to roam? I'm willing to only be able to get 2g but still receive text and calls. I'm on campus 9 hours a day with very bad TMobile service while Att is fine. My network on campus blocks wifi calling thru the routers so that will not work. Any ideas?
They should allow roaming. I am gonna subscribe to this because my Droid 3 only gets T-Mobile 2G and roaming off of AT&T 3G would have its advantages.

If there is any t-mobile service at all, then I doubt that you'll be allowed to roam on AT&T towers, have you tried connecting the phone to a computer that is connected to the internet, then enabling "internet pass-through" I think it should allow you to use the internet for calls, unless the computer is connected to a dhcp server with the same wifi call blocks..

I tried this already with no luck. The entire network on campus has ACL's
set up to block all wifi calling, such as skype. This included tmobiles wifi calling. I can see the ATT network when i manually search but it will obviously not connect. I guess I will try and unlock and root then attempt this again. I am just thinking it has something to do with the sim card itself?? Anyone ever tried this before?
