Today replacement - comparision - General Questions and Answers

Hello
I see there are many options to tune Today screen. First there are apps like HomeScreen++ which enhance Today.
And we have Today replacement.
So there are apps delivered with phones by big companies, like TouchFlo3D, Manila, Titanium, Glide etc.
We have some commercial progs: SPB Mobile Shell, Wisbar, Vito Today (or sth like this).
And we have many free apps:
Androkkid, FEWidgets, Infinity, PointUI and many others I don't remember.
All of them have their weaknesses - some have memory leaks, others are memory hog, some are slow, or doesn't have all features, hard to extend, or are simply ugly. But the biggest weakness (for free software) is lack of support.
I think it would be good to make an article comparing all of them.
It's pity that every software have it's own system of widgets incompatible with others. In old good days Today items were standarized, and (while not the prittiest and finger friendly) all were working together, so life were easier.
Now we have 20+ programs - every have titanium clock, every has weather plugin/widget, what I want to say is that all of them has the same functionality, but at the end old good Today screen has more "widgets" than all of them together.
What I'm looking for is something light, easily configurable, finger friendly and not eating my battery.
I see there are many like me. But there is nothing to choose. Most free projects are abandoned, commercial projects are usually very heavy and not easily configurable. Any comment?

Moved as not software release.

Thanx for moving, I wan't sure which forum to choose

What about Titanium that comes standard with WM6.5?
Maybe flash a 6.5 ROM, titanium is very customizable and it's not eating much memory and it's simple. You can also add different 'panels', such as a communication manager, weather, etc.

I have Titanium. I've installed JMLToday and it slowed down my phone so much that it was useless.
There is not so much plugins for Titanium as you suggest. I see no alternative in Titanium to have all important information at once:
-unread mail, SMS
-unanswered calls
-clock/date
-nearest calendar appointments
Default Titanium configuration put those information on different widgets and i need to tap one by one to check them all.
Ps. Yes, Titanium is beatifull.

I use S2U2 for unread mail/sms, missed calls, time, date and appointments best solution for me, so now I have a lot of free space on today to use for more things - apps, weather, wireless monitor, google search and so on

Anything other than SPB Pocket Plus or CLaunch?

I used to use CLaunch all the time, and then changed to Pocket Plus about a year ago.
Is there anything else out there that lets you put icons on the today screen and have both large, and small icons?
I don't need tabs, but I do need several icons.
I am happy to lose the battery and memory card status, because there are already several plugins that do that for free.
yes mate ilauncher best one imo, runs smooth small foot print and looks good
The Lightest one would be O2 shortcuts though there is Not much Customising you can do Like Changing the Icons or Sizes..

OK, I have had a play with the options, and I think Wisbar Advanced Desktop looks like the one I may go for.
I like the way I can include Pocket Plus elements, and so many other things.
Although I didn't like tabs, I do really like having different desktops. One for my mail and calendar notification with GPRS/UMTS status, and another with all my icons.
Really nice interface, but seems quite buggy, so I might wait and see what the next version brings before I blow any cash on it.
Thanks

"Yahoo Go! is the first application optimized for the “small screen” of a mobile phone that truly makes it easy and fun to access the Internet. Everything about the Yahoo! Go interface is designed to be both visually stunning and give you what you want with the fewest clicks possible.
At its core is the carousel, used to navigate intuitively among the various Yahoo! Go widgets: your own personal channels for email, local info & maps, news, sports, finance, entertainment, weather, Flickr™ photos and search. Simply use the carousel to scroll over to the widget you want. Since Yahoo! Go uses advanced caching and background loading technology, your widget content is automatically and continuously “pushed” to your phone, so it’s always right there when you want it. You don’t need to endure lengthy downloads or navigate loads of links to get to what you want."
Granted, on Windows Mobile devices we've had the capacity for years to do a LOT of things that this app presents as "revolutionary", but what is rather impressive is the way they've integrated it all together. Check out the demo and you'll see.
At this time, they list a total of 77 Windows Mobile devices on which Go should work (though many have a small balloon stating "coming soon!"). Unfortunately the XV6600 is not one of the devices on which it will work. Sad
Live Search, Google Maps, and now Yahoo Go! - gotta love the choices and the competition it breeds! We the consumer end up being the winner!

I used to use it a while back and it was fine... some people complained about it taking over their hotmail inbox on their devices but i chose not to sync mail.
2.0 is still not released on pocket pc so till then i can't give you a good answer (its been a since i've used 1.0)
I used version 1 for a while - until it decided it didn't wanna work anymore that is. Good app. I like the Calender and Contact link. I'll try V2 once it's released for WM in April.
its not released for most wm devices yet.
like someone said before the first beta kinda sucked. it took over your ppc. it asked you to upload pics to yahoo every time you snapped a pic. then it always asked to connect instead of doing it quietly in the backround. on top of that it had no stand alone messenger (everything is about money with these guys) and lastly it had the worst memory leak. everytime i tried it out for more than 2 days i had to hard reset my wizard. it didnt even have html mail.
the concept was great but they never delievered a good product. i hope this gamma release fixes all the problems. and if they cheat us out of a messenger then im going to have to scrap it again.
i must admit though, i am looking forward to the gamma. im curious. btw, any leaks of it yet????

I agree. I tried it out and had to uninstall it within an hour. I found it very frustrating to use, slow to respond and devoid of any useful error messages.

Windows Mobile/PPC Shell's

Hi,
Been doing some research on Windows Mobile/PPC shells.
So far I have tried the following.

HTC Home with SPB Mobile shell HOME icons only. (only way i know how to get icons on my home screen was via spb..)
I mainly use this right now.
2.
I tried out ThrottleLauncher's TouchFlo3D
IT IS OKAY, not bad actaully. Still some issues. But not bad at all.
3.
Winterface, wow i really love this.
My major issue is, it has no today plug-in so I always find myself back at the windows today screen all the time.
Other lame issue is their SMS app and contact app and photo app, they could have integrated those standalone apps way better into a single product.
Overall vito's app suite looks promising.
Anyhow,
My question is what other mobile shells are there? Is there anything out there close to winterface but better? I really like it. Overall anymore finger friendly things? Post/link me to other apps. Please give me thoughts.... and ideas...
For iPhone interface look-a-like, iFonz.

Thank you for the suggestions.
I already use SPB Mobile. Paid for it and vito suite.
Anyhow keep suggestions/apps coming. Hopefully down road someone else will find this thread useful.
Any others?

WOW, that is not bad

Not a bad thread, nice to have all the various options laid out.
As you have HTC's Home plugin for the Today screen included, you may also want to add Pocket Digital Clock (just a nice, lightweight clock) in combination with your launcher of choice such as UltimateLaunch or MortButtons.
yepp
That is the idea of this tread so one day some newbie can look at the work i already did for them. Also hoping others will contribute.

Oups
sorry repeated post
Im talking about shells not specfic app so much but thanks for the suggestion.
Becomes kind of blurred as most of the apps that are or are going to be listed are typically just a clock with an app launcher.
I was going to start a thread... regarding
"windows mobile finger friendly apps'
starting a list of applications like this...
but i found a website http://www.touch-innovation.com/
It does not list free ones... so anyone want to add on apps to this list free or paid? besides ones on the site.

Android replacement for HandyShopper - AndShoBBer

I was one of many satisfied HandyShopper users. Chris Antos had made the perfect
shopping app for the PalmPilot, and I even went so far to that I bought a
Windows Mobile phone because Chris had ported HandyShopper to Windows Mobile.
But enough was enough. My next phone was to be an Android - but how could I
survive without HandyShopper? I couldn't, and I couldn't find an appropriate
substitute for Android - so I had to clone it myself.
AndshoBBer is the result - currently in beta. In some ways worse, in some ways
different but in many ways inspired by HandyShopper. I hope Chris Antos sees
this as a tribute, not a plagiarism.
You may download AndShoBBer from

good idea but not for me
My wife and I really need something that's able to import our massive HandyShopper lists. ToMarket's interface is a bit unpleasant for us, but until now it's been the only thing out there.
What an Android shopping list app, or indeed any modern shopping list app, needs is sync. I really need to be able to add something to our shopping list when I'm at work and have it show up in the app on my wife's phone when she goes to the market, or my son needs to be able to add milk to my shopping list after he's used it all up (again).
A nice touch is some sort of web interface so one doesn't have to type on a teensy keyboard.
I'll give this a try.
In principle I agree with your views on sync - but at the moment I am developing for my own pleasure, and with respect to "modern" this does not include my wife, so I have no personal need for sync, so unless I can do this in an easy way (or make lots of money )....
If you or anybody else has some good input on a library to use for web sync of Android SQLite bases please let me know - then I will look into it.
Anders
Thank you, andbb! I was devasted when I moved from an HTC Aria (WinMo 6.5) running Chris's HandyShpr. I am hoping your tribute to Chris comes anywhere close to his works, as I have been through a half-dozen disappointing shopping lists.
Again, thank you!
see also: OI shopping list
For those who might prefer a different approach, "OI Shopping List" (when combined with the "OI Convert CSV" plug-in) does a decent job with import of HandyShopper CSV files.
rShopping List
I used HandyShopper on the Palm for a very long time before switching to Android.
I couldn't find an Android app with the features of HandyShopper, so I wrote my own.
You might give my app rShopping List a try.
I sorely miss HandyShopper, as does my wife.
So why are we using a shopping list app that disappoints us each time we use it? Because it syncs.
These days I think syncing is a must-have feature for a shopping app. I need to be able to add something to our mutual shopping list when I use the last of it. My wife needs to be able to add something while I'm on the way to the store. This is so vital that we'll put up with an otherwise very disappointing program that manages lists in silly and useless ways.
I have yet to find an app with the utility of HandyShopper that syncs.
As I mentioned, OI Shopping List has many features that should appeal to HandyShopper users, including importing HandyShopper data. It doesn't currently sync, but there are some GSoC students working on sync this summer.

New Gmail Leaked Screenshots - Features Show A New UI, Pinned And Snoozed Messages

SOURCE : Kickedface
Email is one of those things that you either see as a necessary evil that consumes more of your day than it needs to, or it’s something you ignore completely until you absolutely have to use it. Anyone who says they actually enjoy using email is probably suffering from a digital variant of Stockholm Syndrome, but over the last year there have been several apps that have made the experience a lot more bearable. Gmail is high up on that list. Now it looks like Google is exploring ways to make email something people actually want to use.

At first glance it looks a lot like Gmail as you know it now, but with a few key differences that radically change how the email client is used. For starters, there are a lot more tabs to separate all of your email into. Currently the groups are Social, Promotions, Forums, and Updates. This version of Gmail includes Travel, Purchases, and Finance to the mix, with the same basic properties that the existing five tabs currently have, In your primary Inbox, you’ll see these grouped both in the side menu and at the top of your inbox if there are new messages for those categories.
There’s also a new Pinned feature, which functions exactly as you’d expect.
You can pin an email if you want it to stay floating at the top of your Inbox, and there’s a toggle switch for when you want to see your pinned emails and when you want those messages to go back to their original point in the Inbox. This looks like it would be a great deal more useful than the current star system, which doesn’t appear in this UI at all.
Your emails can also be Snoozed in this new UI. Snoozing an email means it appears as read until the timer goes off, when it will then float to the top of your Inbox as an unread email. You can choose to snooze an email for a couple of hours or several weeks depending on your need, and you can snooze messages over and over again if you choose to.
This is not very likely a final version of Gmail. These shots are the result of Google trying out new features to see what will work for Gmail before making them available to the public. It’s pretty clear that Google’s goal with each of these features is to make email something you can better organize and manipulate to serve your needs, which in turn gives them a better idea of what information you think is important for Google Now and other services. Hopefully we get to see more than a couple of these features in the real world soon.
it seems to be true but so far I hate it, I'm just glad it will work perfectly with tinted statusbar
