I found a site with someone who bricked their phone but found a loop hole. I have never bricked my phone and hoping i never will but for those who have bricked their phone here are some steps to try to unbrick it! HOPE IT HELPS! SEND FEED BACK!!
So you can’t access bootloader or recovery and the only thing that works is the blue led trick when pressing trackball + power button??
Try the procedure below.
Step 1: Turned Phone off by taking out the battery.
Step 2: Prepared SD card
Put SD card in card reader and formatted it as FAT32, copied the DREAIMG.nbh onto it.
Or try Sapphimg.nbh
Step 3: Put SD card back in phone
Step 4: Hold Vol down + Power + track ball together and put battery to start phone
Step 5: Run update
IF THAT DIDNT WORK!
TRY THIS!
Step 1: Turning Off Your Phone
Because you have a bricked phone, you can't just hold the power button. So if your phone is not already off then you're going to want to take out the battery.
Step 2: Preparing Our SD card
Take out your SD card and put it into an SD card reader or some type of other adapter so that we can view it from our computer. If you cannot view the SD card on your computer then you're going to need a new SD card.
Download DREAIMG-RC29.zip and unzip the file.
Reformat the SD card to FAT32 and copy the DREAIMG.nbh onto it.
Safely eject the SD card.
Put the SD card into your device.
Step 3: Wipe The Phone
Hold home and press the power button.
When you see the image of an ! mark, open your keyboard and press Alt + L if you cannot see any command options.
Do a factory reset by pressing Alt + W or just using the trackball.
When the reset is done, go ahead and hold the camera button and select the reboot system now option with your trackball.
Step 4: Flashing The Phone
Once the grey screen pops up (or the white screen if your phone was rooted with JesusFreke) it will ask you to hit a button to start installing the image…press that button. DO NOT DO ANYTHING TO STOP THIS PROCCESS. It will take about 8-12 minutes.
When the image has completed the installation (it will say completed), go ahead and press the green, red, and menu buttons at the same time. The phone will reboot.
And your done! Your phone is now unbricked!.
The G1 screen will hang there for a good minute or two, but be paticiant, it will boot. Now you have a choice. Try to hack your phone again, because you're in the correct state to have another go, or, you can stick with the official Android. Now if you choose to stick with the official Android, here's what you do.
Step 1: Upgrading to Android 1.0 RC33
Download the file signed-PLAT-RC33-from-RC30.zip
Rename the file to update.zip and copy it to your SD card
Reboot your phone into recovery mode. Power off the phone first and then hold down the Home key while powering it back on.
The recovery mode is finished loading when you see the ! mark inside the triangle. Press Alt + L to display the list of options.
Press Alt + S to flash the file update.zip.
Wait for the update to apply. Your phone may reboot during this process so be patient.
Press Home + Back if prompted to reboot your phone.
Step 2: Upgrading to Android 1.5 CRB43
Download the file signed-kila-ota-148830.de6a94ca.zip
Repeat the steps from above to flash the update file.
Step 3: Upgrade to Android 1.5 CRC1
Download the file signed-kila-CRC1-from-CRB43-FIX.7ca4a1d7.zip
Repeat the steps from above to flash the update file.
Step 4: Upgrade to Android 1.6 DRC83
Download the file signed-kila-DRC83-from-CRC1.c41b93c1.zip
Repeat the steps from above to flash the update file.

Yeah, that's what I was talking about. Soft Brick is when you can get into recovery/bootloader. I've seen the JTAG thread, imo waste of time.

Nice try. It'll surely help someone out, but the phones that are totally dead (rather than just having a borked boot, system, and/or recovery partition) won't benefit from this.
This procedure depends on a living SPL, which you simply don't have in a truly bricked device.

Its a good thing that other people don't share your perspectives. If everybody just gave up the moment that something doesn't work *right now*, not a single human would be alive today.
The top part is talking about a brick. I have always figured there is some "ancient Chinese secret" to getting it to reload. I don't have a brick but if I did I would not ignore the possibility this could work.
I would have thought a desperate user would have tried every button combo by now though.
yeap, not a real brick
....
Ive seen a few people that lucked up and unbricked their phones .. some waited did every possible combo .. yes .. but i think somehow there is a way .. and im still looking lol
Possible hint!
Has anyone tried using adb .. Reflashing the recovery img??
if seen 2 or 3 people say they saw somewhere on the interwebz about a guy who un-bricked his device.
i have yet to see any of those people give a link or anything.

run fastboot boot recovery-image.img or whatever you named your recovery image. It'll display "waiting for device..." message just keep pluging it in, unplugging, popping the battery and eventually your device will respond and boot into recovery.
Someone bricked and i did it... twice trying to flash the eng 2010 SPL. It worked the third time and my device is up and running again with an engineering SPL.
if your device is stuck on the first splash but displays in red "Fastboot USB" message in the upper left corner of the screen, DO NOT power it down. run the above mentioned command and reflash.
Found another hint

-I Connected USB.
-I inserted the battery.
-I booted the phone while holding the HOME key.
-The phone still froze at the first splash screen, but then suddenly, the waiting fastboot command detected the phone and booted the recovery image!

I think he didn't let the phone finish and restarted the phone cause it wasa taking too long if that's the case 99.0% the phone is bricked. It happend to somebody else here already. Jy

If the phone can't reach the bootloader or recovery console I don't think ADB is going to work but I could be wrong.
patience is a virtue
your topic title is misleading and could lead users who haven't tried yet to be too wary about flashing over to Haykuro's builds...
Ultimately...your phone didn't mess up after flashing 4.X..YOU messed up.
if you cant turn on youre g1 then it is dead, even if you connect it to pc or what if it cant be turned be on, it is dead cuz thats what happened to me so just call t-mo and tell them youre phone wont turn on and you tried another battery still wont turn and DO NOT tell them you modify or even saying you attemped to modify your g1's rom.
the best thing for him to do would be flash rc29 nbh and start from scratch...the phone is more than likely not bricked.

To my opinion, i do not think the phone is bricked since there is no hardware issue is involving, it's the software itself, if he can access to the root of the sd card, problem is solved.
but oh well, i would call Tmobile and request a new shinny phone . wait... they will send a refurbished one won't they? oh noo...
I have a similar problem, i was attempting to move apps to the sd card, partitioned it, installed the lucidrem rom and then started using his code and the flashing android loop started, turned it off and back on and still the flashing android, i used the fastboot method to restore my nandroid backup, and the phone is back to working, my problem is that i cant access recovery mode.
everything else is fine, just when i try to load the recovery mode it just stays on the boot screen, can anybody help a newbie out?
the bootloader works, and the phone can load normally, but the recovery mode wont start.

That happened to me also. When I installed lucidrem's rom the recovery would work. What it actually was that when you first rooted your g1 do you rmr installing the recovery img? Well its pretty much the same thing lucidrems rom didn't have a recovery img command line attatched to it. I just installed recovery again from the terminal emulator just like it said in the root your g1 thread.
Atleast that is my side of the story. I don't anything about coding. So I could be wrong but that was just my experience.

wow, thanks alot for your help, reflashed the recovery.img and it worked a treat, thought id bricked it good and proper, but your advice worked, thanks again.
I started this thread as a constructive and positive place for those of us that have recently lost our G1's or ADP's. I am going to document all my settings, Radio version, Firmware, Build info, etc here and hopefully reverse engineer this issue until I have an answer. If anyone has any hardware engineering information on this device it would be greatly appreciated. I'm even willing to host a private forum from my site to work on this.
Thanks everyone for your continued hard work and Haykuro, you're still the man!

You convert a SD card into a Goldcard and the phone will read it and allow the phone to flash ANY NBH file, regardless of CID, etc etc.

This has happened to me many times when I didn't wipe (the PHONE ). Take the battery out, place back in and hold Home + Power to get into menu. Type alt + w to wipe, afterwards, alt + s to apply update.zip from sdcard, then Home+Back to restart. The first time loading, it can take up to ten minutes to get past the Android screen (mine took 7-10 minutes), so be patient.
Post back with any results.

that wont work i just read the write up. In order for the goldcard to work, the g1 has to go into fastboot, which none of our devices can go into fastboot nor recovery. I even formatted a sdcard to start the process but when i got to the fastboot i was so disappointed.
One detail, when i flashed the new spl I was doing something else and when i check my phone it back to recovery utility windows itself ,it was in 15 20 minute, after that i reinstalle jf1.5 and all worked ok
what this means. if you are flashing your phone and before these process finishes your take out you battery, you can bricking you phone. take patience and wait.
Good luck

So yes I guess I bricked one phone but a miracle happened with the other one. the one that flashed properly went into the recovery on its own right after the boot, but not in no 15-20 min wait like you said. you sure need to stop the blaming. i am not blaming anyone for my bricked phone, im just trying to find a solution. you are going to get this locked because of the bickering.
hey sir*mes was no my intentions blaming to anyone , i only want to say that all need to give more time to flash before take out the battery. only that.

So what harm would it do to try? From what I remember the goldcard on herald was supposed to get us into the bootloader even when we couldn't normally.
Let me be perfectly clear, those of us with the issue of a bricked device from loading the SPL from Haykuro are experiencing an actual case of being bricked.
Read carefully.
The phone WILL NOT turn on!!!!
We are looking for a solution that runs as far back as actually burning the SPL image directly to the phone's memory. I am even willing to try a hardware to hardware method to accomplish this.
I know the phone is still somewhat responsive because my laptop detects the USB connection to the phone but it will not recognize the device.. obviously because the communication is broken since the phone is dead. The power LED will turn on but only after I remove the battery first. Once I press the POWER key the LED turns off and will not light again until I remove and replace the battery.
Solutions that we are trying:
GoldCard method.
Looks like a couple of us have tried this but since fastboot can't see the device then we can't use this method unless someone knows something super seceret.
Crashing the device by allowing the battery to fully discharge. Unlikely but trying anyway.
Any other ideas?????
Thanks everyone for helping thus far!

The same happens on Heralds when the imgfs is messed up. To fix it, we force it to go into the bootloader mode and it does turn on. I wonder if it's something similar.
I meantioned in the big main topic an idea though I dont think anyone saw it.
In the past for other phones I was able to make recoveries using the computer while it was in the boot loop.
Anyone with the brick, try to see what happens when you do this:
adb remount
After the "T-Mobile G1" screen shows up. See if it says mount sucessful. I would try though it does not stay on the screen too long for me, not only that it might work for me just because it continues fine so its inconclusive.
If you get lucky and it says remount successful, you could try this:
adb shell recovery
I am not sure of the commands to follow from there, but it might allow you to flash a different update.zip file from the command line. If you get lucky like that, look up the commands and see how that might go. There has to be a way to communicate to the hardware when that screen comes up. Its good that that screen comes up, because it means its not 'fried' so to speak, it just has a misconfigured loader which doesnt have the correct set of instructions (good point about the different types of boards, thats most likely the issue) for THAT board. I would go back to the one that worked previously.
My brain hurts...I'm so frustrated I feel like slamming the phone against the wall.
I've gone through 5 threads about bricked Inspire phones but it seems my case is a little different than those.
This was clearly a failed rooting. The phone is stuck on the white screen/boot logo.
It will let me go into HBOOT but none of the functions will work,i.e. recovery, bootlader, etc. It vibrates and keeps going back to the boot logo screen or the triangle icon appears. I've tried everything, the S-ON Tool did nothing because the phone is not recognized when connected to the PC. When I try "factory reset" on HBOOT,it acts like it's going to do it but after a few seconds it goes back to the logo screen. Attempted several rooting processes with Hack Kit but get "phone is offline" error or not connected. I've taken out the battery so many times it's ridiculous. At this point I feel helpless and hopeless.Surely I'm doing something wrong and I'm hoping one of the gurus here can point me in the right direction.
Thank you very much in advance to all those who answer this post.
Search the recent questions regarding problems while trying to root. I have said it over and over that the best thing is to go back to the hack kit thread and re read the op. Towards the bottom it says to hit up the irc for help. All the people that have gone to the irc have received the help they needed.
Edit...irc it seriously. Good luck! :-D
I got your 10 char right here
I think we should have a sticky in every forum explaining to people what a BRICKED phone is. Your phone is not bricked....and what cwhitney said also...........................yeah

It is so NOT bricked. Catch us in the IRC channel in my sig and we can get you sorted out, or, you can do it yourself.
If you "factory reset" all you did was wipe your dta settings - including USB debugging on.
Before you can do anything, you will need to install the factory RUU. You can do this from the FASTBOOT USB (note NOT HBOOT USB PLUG) and running the HTC/ATT RUU.
If you're still stuck i had the same issue. Had to reflash the pd98 image zip in hboot again to fix thru issue

What a great idea!!I have done that but thanks for your help anyway
I had the same issue. I just took out my micro SD card, put it in my PC to load the ROM as a P98IMG.zip file on there, re-install the SD into my phone, the boot up in HBoot. It proceeded to find the zip file and continued to install the ROM to my phone. Afterwards it booted up as normal, but of course all of my information had been erased.
it's mya phone a brick!!!!

If it's not already called PD98IMG.zip (which it should be), rename it to this. Put it on your SD card at the root directory (don't put it in any subfolders)
Boot to bootloader (Power off, hold Vol- and PWR until bootloader starts)
It should automatically find the PD98IMG.zip and tell you to press Vol+ to start the update.
When it's done, it will tell you to press PWR to reboot
This happened to me and I am hoping this will fix my phone, downloading now, getting a micro sd card reader tomorrow from best buy to put the new file on there to replace the old one. PLEASE WORK>....stay tuned

That is great. A little bit of reading and a great amount of common sense never hurts a situation.

thank you so much this solved my problem!!
Never been rooted. My phone froze so I took out the battery and when I turned it back on, the phone was stuck on the boot logo. I've entered into the hboot menu by holding down the down volume key + power. I selected "Factory Reset " but it does nothing. I also tried selecting "Recovery Mode", which makes some green arrows appear, then the phone vibrates about 6 times in a row and goes blank.
Can I load a ROM or something to save the phone?
I also tried removing the SD card when booting, plugging the phone into the PC, etc. Nothing.
Running Gingerbread 2.3.4
I've never rooted or anything but I can follow directions if there's a way. Thanks a lot for reading.
Oh, and when I plug the phone into the computer, it appears to create a drive letter in My Computer, but when I click the drive, it doesn't open.
Should I just warranty out this phone or is there any hope? thanks.
confirm your sd card is good first.
flash your phone with the rom you like.
I think it will be ok after you flash it.

Goto the glacier forum. Download the factory img file found in the rooting topics. Boot into recovery and let it flash completely. Should be good.
Or... U have a bad emmc and it is toastito's...
How do I flash the phone once I boot into recovery? do I drag and drop the IMG file somewhere on the SD card?
Sorry for the noobness.
When I plug the phone into the PC, a drive letter appears in My Computer - but nothing happens when I click it. Once I put it in recovery, the drive letter disappears.
How would I go about flashing if I don't have access to the files on the SD card?
Okay I got access to my SD card by plugging my SD card into a different phone then the computer.
There is no root folder available when doing it this way - so where would I install the flash file to?
**** never mind, I get what they mean by root...sorry, I'm retarded *****
I think I got it, I'll give this a try.
Okay. All it does is in Hboot, it checks and loads PDIMG15.ZIP, but then it just takes me back to the Hboot menu and the phone is still stuck on the boot screen.
it says...
"SD Checking PD15IMM.ZIP
No image or wrong image!"
Then reverts back to Hboot menu. Tryed formatting the SD card. Will try a different SD card next.
Different 8gb SD card = same results. No image or wrong image.
Appreciate it if anyone has a fix on this.
If anyone else is having this issue, I found a solution:
Go to T-Mobile and buy a SG2.
Problem solved.
This is supposed to a big Android site? thanks for nothing, guys!
I ended up just getting a new phone. Appreciate no one helping. Awesome awesome.

There is a search bar ...there is forums..... each forum sorted out bu the phone you have each of those forums having subforums to "general Q&a development" and so on.... my question is if you didnt have it rooted why not just take it to the store directly??? Problems like that will asure new a new phone regardless....
Just my 2 cents
oh and this is an amazing site....
rooted 100's of phones with out ever joining and ive finally joined
....crazy how the search bar takes you long ways
hello all,
I am new here and I have been searching the forums for a few days as well as the internet but I could not seem to find one that had my same problem, but if there is can you please direct me to it and apologies for that.
I was installing a new rom, the Blackout ICS Incredible v3.0.0 FULLY WORKING!!! [4.0.4][Sense 3.6], onto my inspire i did a full wipe using FULL_WIPE_1.5_EXT4_.zip and I cleared the caches. the install i thought went well because it went to 100% and i even chose what kind of background i could as well as choosing to over clock my processor. The phone the restarted after all of that and it went to the htc screen then faded to black, after about ten minutes of it being black screen i pulled out the battery.
Now when i try to recover it it wont go into hboot and it just goes to the htc white screen then it quickly fades to a black screen and stays like that.
so my question to you all is a Jtag the only way i can save my phone or is there something else i can do?

Im sorry but I dont understand. I cannot enter hboot no mater what i do and don't you need to enter hboot to reflash it?
True, but I'm hoping you are doing something wrong.
Pull battery, wait a few minutes, place back in. Press and hold Volume down, then power button. Does it go into hboot? If not.
Read this.

Edit: you are the first report with that issue after trying to flash that rom. My bet (that is, if you are new), you are not doing something wrong.
2nd edit: if you are new, then read the guide in post#7

I really appreciate the help Teichopsia , but I've tried the power /volume - method many times and it still wont go to hboot. if it helps this is the 5 time i have have flashed a rom on my phone (and it is rooted) and yes sadly i had to be the first person to be unlucky enough to get my phone bricked from the blackout rom :crying:
i think i could get out of this mess if i could only get into hboot.
reading the method you linked to me will it work if i cant even get to the hboot screen? my phone only stays of the white htc logo screen for about 3 seconds then it goes to a lit black screen
on a side note should i report what happened to team blackout to see if they have any soloutions?
The only thing I can think of is trying to get into hboot without the sd card and sim card.
The rest is beyond my knowledge.
You'll need to wait for someone more knowledgable than myself to help you.
Remember, first press and hold the volume down button, while holding that down press the power button. Do not release either button till it shows the hboot. If that doesn't work, pull the battery for five minutes and try again. If you did this part exactly like that, then you can skip it.
Well, you already posyed your issue here, just wait for someone to help you. Glevitan is bound to show up sooner or later.

I would see if you can send commands to it from adb while its in the blacked out state. adb is pretty easy to use and can be found easy online. if you get it installed type "adb devices", if it recognizes your device type "adb reboot bootloader" or "adb reboot recovery".

i also have the same problem. i'm using a DHD. and to add to that, my volume rocker is broken. i wonder why the warning not to select reboot immediately after installation wasnt part of the download as a readme or something. i may have just lost a perfectly good phone as a result
I can confirm as a third user and one knowledgable in flashing roms that the ICS blackout does the same thing to my phone. I can also confirm that pulling the battery and then trying hboot just results in the white htc screen instead of just popping up hboot. I was able to boot into recovery from the white htc screen by using adb and doing the "adb reboot recovery" command. I am able to restore my backup just fine so you guys will be able to fix it. it must just have a bad boot image for the version of hboot that we have installed.

Im sorry but this is the first time i have ever done something like that can you give me a step by step instruction how to do it or a link that says how, i dont want to sound lazy but I scared to mess up my phone even more
Use this guide its very easy. if you have already used your phone on your pc and the drivers are installed all you need to do is download the easyadb and follow the instrucions to where is says to type adb.exe. once it is started just type adb devices to make sure it sees your device and then adb reboot recovery
Ignore the fact the instructions are written for a xoom as it will work for any android device with the drivers already installed, which they should be from rooting, syncing and all the other stuff you have probably already done on pc.
UPDATE: I reinstalled ICS blackout but instead of wiping myself i just let aroma installer do it and everything went fine this time. I noticed the aroma installer reformats everything to ext4. its not mentioned in the op as a requirement but seems thats the case. Hboot version has nothing to do with it like i previously commented. It really is a cool rom with both ics and sense. I have only tried the sense version so far
Hope this helps?

Just in case-- to get into recovery you must press and hold the volume down for a few seconds and then hold the power button. Do not do press them both at the same time. I realize you wrote that your volume rocker seems or is broken but I wrote above just in case-- when I first tried to root my phone, I was pushing them both at first and thought my rocker was broken....
Since you rooted the phone originally-- not sure how you did it. But if you go to this link you can download recovery flash. Read the "readme" file:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29208930&postcount=10
Assuming you can get into recovery-- then reload the blackout ROM but you MUST let the aroma installer wipe and format do not use any other wipe/format tool. Then do NOT press the "FINISH" button-- instead press the back arrow-- you want to go back to flash recovery and reboot from there. If you press finish (like I did multiple times, the phone will just lockup).
Best of luck!
Three of us confirmed that hboot was inaccessible even after battery pull. I am no stranger to this device as well. The only fix was using adb reboot. Also if you actually reformat your partitions to ext4 before install, then aroma will install correctly. It's just not mounting anything if it's still in ext3 format. Definitely better to just do the full wipe within aroma though. I do agree with not hitting restart from aroma but someone already mentioned that a few posts up.
Thank you thank you thank you
After putting it into abd it recognized it and then i was able to put it into hboot. Im not out of the woods yet, but after not being to see hboot in so long, well its just amazing to see it again
ok now its in hboot it gives me 4 choices
bootloader
Reboot
Reboot Bootloader
power down
apologies again but just for reassurance which one should i select?
THANK YOU GUYS for getting me this far!!!
special thanks to Gizmoe for suggesting the adb route
