Ok so I just bought a TP2, originally a Verizon phone, fully flashed over to Cricket. Not sure what ROM or whatever is on it (if anyone can tell me how to find out, I would be happy to check). I used PimBackup on my TP1 to get all my contacts, and old text messages; went ahead and used PimBackup on the TP2 and had Pim erase the old contacts/messages before putting my stuff on. After it was done transfering all the messages and what not, it said I had 2 unread text messages, but when I checked, everything in the inbox was read. I clicked on where you can select outbox, sent, email, etc. and the number 2 in paranthesees is next to my text message inbox, indicating that the 2 unread messages are in there. Any idea how to fix this? Or something I need to do. I'm gonna go lay down right now and delete some of the messages I don't need, hopefully figure this out. Thanks for any input or info you have on this issue. I tried searching, but yielded nothing (I dont really know what to look for). Thanks again, and in advance!
unzip and place .exe on phone. Then run the .exe using a file explorer.
sweet! it worked! thanks. i just ran the exe, soft reset, opened my messages, and when i went back out the number 2 went away. THANKS! i appreciate it.

I have an O2 XDA Exec running one of the old Crossbow ROMs (one of those where it's "Outlook Mobile" instead of "Messaging", I forget exactly which ROM it is I went for at the time). One thing I quite enjoy is that even after switching devices and upgrading the ROM is still having every SMS I've sent or received since summer 2006. This might all end here, sadly, as Outlook Mobile won't load and neither of the SMS backup programs I've tried have worked.
Here are the symptoms:
When I try and load Outlook Mobile (regardless of whether it's from the Start menu, HTC home screen, the messaging part of the today screen or the text option in Contacts) it simply does nothing.
I have tried two SMS backup programs. The EasyHelper "Contact + SMS Backup" which I normally use flashes up an error saying "Read SMS failed. Please restart device and try again. If the problem still exists, please contact your vendor.(401)" The other one (which I forget the name of now) failed to show a list of folders to backup from and if I ignore that option and try to back up anyway it sits for a while trying and then gives up (it says it's finished but it lies, the resulting file is way too small).
Don't know if this is related but the problem started around the same time. After having my device switched on for a minute or so a message will appear saying "Voice Command has encountered a problem. Restart Voice Command and try again." I don't use Voice Command so this isn't the problem but this error started showing around the same time this started.
When someone sends me an SMS nothing happens.
Don't know if this is normal or not, I get an access denied error when I try and do *anything* with cemail.vol (copy, rename, whatever)
Everything else seems to work fine (except ActiveSync but I can't remember the last time I had that working anyway, I don't use it).
I have tried:
Many soft resets.
Killing poutlook.exe and removing from the Today screen anything that might interact with the messaging.
Launching Outlook Mobile in different ways.
Two SMS backup programs.
Sending myself an SMS from a different phone.
Nothing works and I can't access my messages. Obviously as someone who's been keeping messages for about two years now (crossed the 10,000 mark I think) I'm slightly annoyed about this. I'm planning to reflash my phone to a newer WM6 ROM as soon as I'm not using it as my sole method for Internet access so my only concern here is saving my mass of text messages (either in a format I can read on my PC or a format I can restore from after reflashing my Universal).
If only I'd known before tonight that there was a free program to backup SMS on a schedule...
Any ideas at all? I'm comfortable doing registry hacks or typing commands or whatever needs doing. My messages are on this device somewhere and I want them. There's important nostalgia in there. Help greatly appreciated as ever.
Huh. It works now. No idea why, just got a text message today having not tried it for a couple of days and it seems okay. Frantically taking backups now.
Something on my SD card was messing it up, not sure what but removing the SD card allowed me to back up my messages. I removed the SD card, allowed it to create a "Storage Card" folder when it fails to save something to the SD card (it does this) and then reinserted the SD card and had the backup software back up to "/Storage Card2".
Weird. But I've solved the problem (in my case) and made a note of it on the offchance it might help someone coming in from Google someday.
ROM flashing time!
Thank youu!
Thank you very much... I had the same problem, but noticed it only yesterday!
Apparently I have been receiving sms messages since 3 or 4 days, but it shows nothing on my today screen. Yesterday I tried to open outlook because a friend told me he sent me a message, but... nothing!!!
When I removed the SD card it worked
But no messages since 3 or 4 days! and thus can't know who sent me messages
Anyway, thank you for your thread... and yes, I came from Google
sorry to bump an old thread, but this exact problem happened to me out of nowhere today. google searched it and this thread came up. i noticed i hadn't received even spam in my email to day and that error popped up about voice command. removed my sd card and it all went away.... very strange.
i have not installed any new programs either...
I just updtaed my rom to the official 6.1 build released recently here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=519698
I used Pim Backup before updating to save all my contacts and text messages.
When I did a restore, my phone ran incredibly slowly. I know that before, when I used PIM to restore from Windows 6.0 to 6.1 (this was when I was on a Cingular 8525), it took a very long time because 6.1 needed to nest all my text messages, but my fuze didn't seem to do this. It only kept the last 30 or so messages from my side of the conversation only, and the entire phone slowed down like crazy once I did the restore, especially if I do anything involving text messages, it was damn near unusable.
Is there anything I can do to restore the backup of all my contacts and text messages successfully and have them all intact the way they were before the update?
before you do a restore you should do the tweak to make texts go in regular order not threaded
then do the restore
all you need to do to speed the phone back up is to soft reset.
once you reset you do the tweak to go back to threaded and you will be fine
How many texts do you have? You may want to archive some of the older ones. It's probably worth looking at \cemail.vol just to see how big it is. I don't text much at all and don't use email; I have maybe 100 texts on my device. My cemail.vol (in the root of the device memory) is 292K. If you've got 10K+ texts or some crazy amount, my guess is that your cemail.vol file is huge-this could be your problem. I also have maybe 50 contacts, and my pim.vol is ~600K. If I were you, I'd just look at those two files, and maybe look at your available storage memory before and after restoring your pim data.
Edit: or just do what lbhocky19 said, lol.

How do I do this tweak?
do you have advanced config? if not get that
its in the messaging section
By Advanced Config, do you mean a setting somewhere in my phone that I can set to advanced mode, or do you mean a program I need to download?
Umm, Hello? Anyone?
... umm, can anybody please help me?
Well... http://www.lmgtfy.com/?q=advanced+config
..... you don't have to insult me, "Advanced Config" is a common term, I didn't expect a Google search to get it right on the first hit.
So, is this program basically the equivalent of the Att Tilt's Kaiser Tweak then?
I have a new problem with PIM Backup now however.....
I used Advanced Config to set the messages as regular order, then did the restore, and it APPEARED to work fine (didnt set them back to threaded yet). But then I tried restoring the second backup, and the progress bar has been stuck at 1% for a while now. I am assuming its going so slow because its trying to insert information while the database already has so much information in it.
Is there any way I can make this work faster? A way to restore both backup files at once or merge them into one or something like that?
The reason I have two is because after I made the initial backup, since I wasn't able to get it to restore correctly, I had to reset my device yesterday so I made a second backup that is just the 2-4 week period between then I last updated it and had to reset it, it contains far far fewer messages and logs than previously.
Sorry to post again but.... I have another problem.
The restore isn't working correctly.
I used Advanced Config to set mt messages as standard instead of threaded, and restored my PIM backup. After I set ti back to threaded, it would only show the other person's side of the conversation, not mine. Then once I got a text from that person and replied it started re-sorting the messages..... and then it would only show MY side of the conversation, not theirs!
Why is this happening? Is there anything I can do to fix it?
I'm not sure how it happened. But my TF3d displays that I have one new text message, even though I've checked and cleared all my sms/mms to be sure. The inbox in windows says "Inbox [1]" too, and yet nothing.
I've already tried clearing out all my messages. Restarting the phone. Taking the battery out. Nothin, still saying 1 new message.
Any ideas on how to resolve this?

The download link doesn't seem to work?
I had a stock Microsoft message in my outlook e-mail inbox. At the time I had 3 messaging accounts (so to speak), SMS, Gmail, and Outlook E-mail. That Outlook E-mail account is always there, regardless of if you set it up or use it. It took me a while to find, make sure you check all your folders.
I checked that. It's in my SMS/MMS Inbox supposedly.
But there are no new messages in there.
I HAD the same problem.
I had the same problem. Try both of these attachments.
I don't remember which one worked for me and which one didn't, but my first attempt did not work.
I did have to reset my phone before it worked. I don't know if it matters but I pulled the battery for 2 minutes also.
Hope this helps.
AH-HAH!
The fix unread count exe seemed to do it with a restart.
Thanks!
Another way to fix this without a file is to go into settings/text messages and click the normal mode (or whatever isn't threaded) reboot and the offending message will be there. Once the count has ticked off, enable threaded messaging again, and you will be good to go.
It worked!
I used the FixUnreadCount.zip file and soft reset my phone.
Thanks!

yea it didnt work for me, but once i ran the program and did the soft reset it took about a min. after it booted up to correct its self
Also go into your Recycle Bin in your sms/mms or email accounts and delete those too...they don't automatically get deleted and sometimes will make the counter say 1 message still if those arn't deleted.
this happened to me also earlier today, i got so frustrated after nothing worked that i hard reset......ahhhh!!! so dumb for not checking here
Kick ass!! The FixUnreadCount.zip fixed this same problem for me. I ran the .exe on the phone and then reset it and now it's fixed. I was about to hard reset this damn phone. I was running MightyROM by the way when this problem happened, NOT the stock ROM...not sure if that matters.
I had this problem too. All I did was use File Explorer, Go to My Device > Windows > Messaging and delete everything in there and that did the trick.

I used the FixUnreadCound file and rebooted and after about 20 seconds the count in the text and email were gone.
Thanks,

FixUnreadCount.zip worked for me on my HTC Tilt 2 after a reset.
Power cycle didn't help, but the "red button" reset did.
Much appreciated!
i got a new touch pro, this is my second one. I always use sms in threaded format. The problem is on the phone, i have to enter and leave a conversation to erase each new txt. (example, I wil be in a convo with someone, after we go back and forth 5 times and i leave the convo, it still shows 4 new messages and i have to open and leave the convo 4 more times to erase them). It seems like the phone is marking the txts read as if i am in standard txt mode (must read each individual txt).
My old touch pro did not do this. I have been through the registry for countless hours now and i cannot for the life of me figure this out. I also did a hard reset...still does it. What am i over looking, this is driving me crazy.
Let me know if you cant follow my rant i will try to better explain it. Much thanks for any help.
same problem
i've searched all over the internet for a solution in this matter and cannot find anything!
except for a forum that users say a program worked but i cannot download because an administrator has to approve your account to see files.
so please if you know how to fix this let us know. ty very much!!
ps this isn't the problem where all messages deleted and still says 1 . its when u receive more than one message from same user in the same threaded txt message. you have to go out and come back in the thread to get rid of each unread message.
I always have a 1 indication on my messages even though there is no new message. it goes away when i delete all messages but it returns + the true number of new messages when as they come in. it also shows up in the windows messaging as 1 new in inbox even though there is not. I have soft reset and cannot find a way to erase the damn thing. Anyone else have this issue or know how to help?
Just go to the mail tab click on one of the mail then click the menu option the click on the Inbox. From the Inbox it has several acct. just go thought them and form the mail you haven't read or delete.
it seems to be a winmo issue, i have gone into the registry and deleted the count and it returns, I have no unread anything anywhere and dont even have any messages at all but it always says "Inbox (1)" no matter what...
then try this cab put that in the window reg.
what does it do?
it replaces the internal massages to zero. I got this zip file few weeks ago when I having same issue.
u sure u sent me the correct file, thats not a cab nor is there a cab in the zip file, its a dll...
in any case the .dll does nothing for my problem...
