I've got flashing different ROMS down to a science using a combination of Sprite Backup and Titanium backup. The one thing I can never seem to backup are custom made scenes.
Does anyone know where on the file system scenes are saved? I've searched the forums as well as the web and have yet to find an answer on this. Thanks in advance for any help.

I really hate setting up my scenes. I put forth a lot of effort to get them how I want it. I have just resorted to drawing a simple diagram of my layouts and going by that. Most of my scenes are folders or shortcuts. That's the real PITA.
I would like to know this as well. I assumed they were stored on the sd concidering there is a Rosie folder there but nothing is ever in it.
Just one bump, I promise I'd really like to know this.
I'm honestly not sure, haven't dug around on the phone looking for them before. Have you tried exploring the phones filesystem for the data using ADB yet?
It is a PITA

Mybackup works pretty good for this, sometimes you just have to reinstall some widgets still a pita for me too. I made 12 custom setups that all took very long to set up and i actually diagrammed them and wrote the contents in notepad before my first hard reset. I dont mess with them anymore really because ill probably be flashing again the next day....I really do like the new nexus launcher with live wallpapers though,so i dont spend all that time anymore...
Ill be back....

I seriously hate setting up my meticulous scenes every time I flash a ROM and have to wipe.
I'm trying to get an answer searching the file system myself. It doesn't look like adb shell supports the "find", so I'm looking for something that will search. ES File Exploer seems to only search for images and media.
I've created a screen, anyone have a good way to do a recursive search from the root in shell or another program?
No luck, I used Astro to search for anything regarding scenes and could not find a thing. This might not be stored as a file, but saved in a database. I ran the dalvik debugger and tried tracing to see what gets updated when scenes are changed, but I can't make sense of it yet.
I'll keep plugging away, but I'm not very confident.

I have multiple tilts, and want to make them all the same... is there a way that after I've got one working the way I want it to quickly duplicate/copy everything to another tilt?
I've looked at the kitchen stuff, but need a good walk thru to make heads or tails,,,
I basically am taking someones already cooked ROM, then modifying it and adding the CABS I want, and the config settings I want for the phone. I am also changing start menu layout to my liking.
thanks in advance!

I did a search and can't find an easy answer to this. Anyone have a suggestion?
you can use sprite backup and then do a "upgrade" restore to get most of your stuff on the other tilts. will need to reconfigure email though. please read the help and faq at Sprite's website before you do it.
You want aprogram called SPB Kiosk. I'ts not cheap, but I did some beta testing for them & can probably send you a test copy that's fully functioning. PM me if u want.
why do you need multiple tilts? not to be a smart ass but just dont see the logic. in regard to your question why not install the same rom/radio on each and load your preferred cab files on an sd card and just load them up. its a bit tedious however it shouldnt exactly be brain surgery. plus use pim backup so each phone can have same contacts etc...
Probably b/c like me they are for family &/or business use.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the suggestions so far are to backup the programs and settings but not the ROM. Am I confused?
What you are looking for is something like Sprite Clone (but it aint cheap).

Spb Backup does a complete backup and restore of everything you have installed, all PIM data, and all Register settings, but doesn't install the ROM. I would think you could flash the ROM you want on every other device, and then take the Restore file from the complete unit and run it on every other unit. The Restore file is a self-contained .EXE file, it doesn't need the program to be installed (because the whole point is that it will reinstall everything even if your current program structure is FUBAR)
hi everyone
i was wondering why when i assign a specific ringtone to a contact, it doesn't work. i have flashed several different roms for my herald/wing and sometimes it works. is there a registery edit or something i have to do? i have tried saving the files into the main memory and also the storage and neither works. any ideas or should i just give up on have "devil woman" play when my wife calls.
thanks
DK
Unless something's changed with OpenTouch 6.5 from ttrans fromer OT releases there's nothing special involved. Saving ringtones to the memory card often results in the loss of the assignment.
What type of file is it you're trying to use, how large is it and have you tried encoding it as another type?

i start with an mp3 and use audio manager to trim it and save into ringtones folder. i have also used mp3 trimmer with the same results.
Have you tried MP3 ringtones supplied by anyone else?
If you want you may PM me your email address and I will send you one from my phone that I know works.

i have some RT's that i purchased a while ago and i have some midi tones too. its wierd, when i was using otv3.0 biggy all worked fine. i don't know. thanks for the offer and help
Ok, so the bought ones aren't working either I take it. Do they work when you reflash OT3?
Are you restoring from a backup or do these not work with a fresh setup?
well i kinda have ot6.5 lite tweaked the way i like, so i don't want to go back to 3.0 just for tones. i was just wondering if anyone out there had already come across this and had a reg fix or something. i guess not that many people use diff tones for diff contacts. me, i need diversity in life, plus its easier to recognize a tone than pick up the phone and look whose calling. know what i mean? i also get a kick out of watching my co-workers faces when the diff songs come up. i guess i'll just keep an eye out for a fix. throw me one if you find it first.
thanks
Well, the reason I asked if you've tried a fresh install or even going back to 3.0 is to see if it's not some corruption somewhere. I've run every ROM you've listed so far without issue. I use different ring tones for most of my contacts as well and the only times I ever had that issue was with one corrupt file and the rest were when I put the MP3s on my SDHC.
I'll keep an eye out though. I'd still try backing up (even if you just have to use a demo of Sprite Backup or something) and do a completely fresh install. If you find a solution post it up for future reference.
hmmm. i'm not sure what you men as to a fresh install. i am kinda new to all this tech, i've only had a wing for about 4 months. i have hardspl'd my wing and i hardly ever get any errors when flashing. does sprite backup keep all your rom settings? pretty much all i ever need to keep is my stuff on the mem card. what i dont understand is that i can set a tone for my main ring and that always works. something gets screwy when applied to contacts. so you keep all your tones in main memory? isn't that a mem hog?
Sprite and a couple other apps out there create a backup file of all your settings and selected or all of your files. They saved to a compressed file on either your mem card or your PC (not all apps will backup straight to the PC).
At any rate I just wanted to make sure you weren't from a backup file... to eliminate one possible source of the issue (incompatible settings saved to it from a different ROM setup or corruption).
What I mean by a fresh install is reflashing the ROM and reinstalling all your apps via their installer. No restoring from a backup file or copying files to their folders. Not trying to confuse you.
First thing I'd try now that I know a bit more would be to download a demo of a backup program and make a backup. Then I'd reflash, try setting things up far enough to test the ringtones. If they work, then just plan on reconstructing your preferred setup without using the backup to restore your settings from... if there's no change, then restore the back up and you're right back where you were before.
Does that make sense?
If you're having this problem with more than the one ROM I doubt it's just a setting error. I'd try different sound files altogether.
Specifically which ROMs are you having this problem with anyway? You might see if they've got something in common, such as the same version of sound drivers.
not confusing at all. i got what your saying. i guess i'm actually fresh installing everytime since i don't use any back-up programs. is that right? anyway what other forms of sound files would you recommend? what are you using? the versions of roms i have been using are basically every rom from Ttran's OT collection, starting with v3.0 and currently v6.5 throttlelaunch3d lite. v3.0 is the only one that the tones worked for. i will try the back-up idea you have after work today. thats a good idea. thanks
Yeah, I'd call the way you're doing it a "fresh install"... I mean by that that the system and ROM are essentially fresh and untouched. So you know there's not an old setting that might be causing the problems or a bad registry entry.
Backing up definitely makes things easier. I make a backup of my setup fairly often. Then when I want to try another I'll flash it, start setting it up, and if I need to be back with my old setup before I can finish setting up the new one, I'll backup where I am with the new setup, reflash my old ROM and restore the backup for the old setup... then I can resume working on getting the new one where I want later on.
I make my MP3 ringtones using Audacity. I generally make the mono and only 40kbps... nice and small but usually still sound good at that size. You could also try a WAV file.
I haven't used OT 3, but I've tried all the rest, not just the lite ROMs either. I haven't had any trouble. My offer still stands to send you one of my ringtones for you to test with if you want.
sounds good. is audacity a free? i'm gonna pm you my email and we can try a little test. maybe the stereo is the problem.
thanks
Email sent.
I doubt the stereo is the issue, although file size, bit rate and VBR may be.
Audacity is free. It takes a little getting used to, but there are how-to's on the net, just Google it. It's NOT as user friendly as some apps, but it is generally better than more of the dumbed down apps.

ok, you got me. it worked. did you make those using audacity? if so, i guess i'll have to DL it and start cuttin up some tones. wierd huh?
anyway, thanks for the help. i hope i didn't inconvenience you too much.
DK
So I take it they worked alright for you?
Yeah, I made those with audacity. If you need any help with it shoot me an email.
Hi, i know there are so many threads probably about this, but searching them all honestly just confuses me. and it might be so simple for someone to answer.. ok..
so this is what i need help with...
i got a new Touchpro2 with WM6.5
i just set eveyrthing up the way i like it, programs, colors, sounds, etc etc...
now, is there anyway i can just do like one can with a computer, and make an "image" of my Rom, so lets say in a couple months, settings or something gets screwed up, all i have to do is flash that image back to my phone? and its the same as the day i took the image?
i dont want to have to go through hard resseting, then going through all that work to reinstall programs, cabs, etc etc..
now i read posts about copying your rom, but, from what i see, that just copys yoru stock rom, and not any of my personal settings or programs or things i did to install cabs right?
how would i go about this?
thanks for any input....and i hope its not a too stupid question you guys answered 500 times already
SPB BackUp 2.1 is what you need.
Just Google it ...
Backups are very handy & you won't regret doing it ...
When I first got my G-tab I was baffled by all the instructions and the literally thousands of posts in the forum. Even now, I haven't been able to find exactly how (or why) I should update my kernel. That said, I have TNT Lite running and I love my g-tab. Exploring the possible uses and utilities on it provides hours of fun. Now - here is my question. I stumbled on some instructions for installing the ROM and I have used those same instructions to install several patches to the Rom. I see all this commentary on Clockwork, side loading, etc. and I wonder if I am missing something. Today I just installed the .25 patch for TNT-Lite. I downloaded the rar file, unzipped it on my PC to get the Recovery folder and the update.zip file. I plugged the g-tab into the pc and switched it to usb mode. Then I moved the old recover folder and update.zip to a folder (cautious me) and put the new ones in the root. I disconnected the usb and started the g-tab in recovery mode (holding the power and volume+ key. It rebooted, applied the patch and I was done. That seems simple enough. It would seem that this would work for switching roms, applying patches and probably even upgrading the kernel (If I knew where it was and why I should do it). Am I missing something? Everything seems to work.
Sounds like you got the basics ok.
The real main reason to update the kernal as i see it is to add things like driver support for devices like gps and g3, so on, also minor fixs. If your not using your gtab for anything like this you maybe happy to stay stock. But if you like myself like to use your gtab to surf with g3 or as a sweet gps, then thats what the kernal updates allow. Im sure others can correct me if ive got anything wrong or add to what ive said.
You got the basic steps right, but installing ClockWorkMod Recovery has a lot of benefits.
First, built in backup and recovery will save your skin if the gTab get "cranky".
Second, installing ROMs and/or updates saves you a few steps. From "tar" files (TnT-lite), extract the update.zip file to a folder (I created a folder named "xda", just an example) and name it after the version of ROM/update.
CWM will flash "*.zip" file. This way you can keep multiple ROMs/updates on the card and switch between them.
CWM lets you clear cache, wipe Data partition, clear Dalvik-cache (use caution there), fix permissions and so much more! It is a great tool.

So now we peel back another layer
OK so now the question of multiple roms comes up. I am not clear about the role of the rom - can I switch roms and keep all of my apps and data intact? I'm thinking like changing style sheets on a web page - presentation is different but the underlying data is still the same? Is it that easy?
And... if I am doing that perhaps I need to "clear cache" or "wipe data partition" but although I like to investigate new things I'm not willing to just walk up and push the big red button without knowing what it is for. So why would I "clear" or "wipe" things?
I get the impression that I could switch between ROMs just like switching between browsers on a pc - today Chrome, tomorrow, Firefox and never Internet Exploder... Is that correct? It took me quite a while to get the market working and it still doesn't work optimally but I'd hate to undo all the work I've done getting the g-tab humming along by switching roms. Can I?
So - anyone care to expound on the structure and how it all hooks together? What parts can be swapped out and what parts form the foundation? I'd hate to brick the little guy in my ignorance.
One final note if you know and you answer - where did YOU learn about this. Is there a book somewhere to read?
Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
The Need for A Wiki
I'm in the same boat as enigma. I'm not even sure what ROM is an acronym for, though I think it means operating system. A wiki would be a big help for many people. I bet people would be glad to contribute.
Well, I don't know about Android book, especially about "hacking android book" , but this (and others) forum has plenty of reading material and guides. Not to mention people (a lot more knowledgeable and experienced than me) who will offer advice and lend a hand. And Google search comes in handy too.
Switching ROMs is almost like switching the OS, or a flavor of. Very much like switching between Linux distributions; the base OS is the same, but the overlay changes the user experience. Some things do change deep down inside, that's why is advisable to clear data.
Android, like Linux which it is based on, uses separate partitions for different parts of the OS, like boot, recovery, data, cache and user data. Plenty of write ups and discussions on the web on that.
So when flashing a ROM, you'll rewrite boot and system. Your user apps and data/preferences pertaining to those apps are stored in data partition, and since you are changing the 'OS', the apps need to be recompiled for it. Backup apps, like Titanium Backup, come extremely handy here: backup and restore apps AND appdata with a few clicks.
Backups are stored on sdcard, which is a lot like Linux /home directory, and do not get wiped during flash. Also the CWM (sometimes called Nandroid) backups are also stored there. A backup-of-the-backup is always a good habit (copy of /sdcard to your PC for safekeep).
This is just a quick rundown, hopefully that answered some of the questions.
There is a world of information available out there in "ether-world", Google is your friend.

Yes, your Sticky is as clear as Florida sky.
I just installed Thumb Keyboard on my gTab last night and I guess I got carried away getting used to it!
Yes, I have found some very good step by steps (reflashed to vegan after reading that one). Step by steps are great but I 'd like to understand why I'm doing it. The market fix...I can follow the steps and it works but why? I wish I had time to research all these things but there are so many forums,so many posts to read! The explanation that did surface in this thread was great though. Thanks. I'll keep asking questions. There are a lot of smart people out there!
Hi,
I am slowly getting through the basics of apk decompiling, Editing, Debugging & recompiling.
Using tools like Apk Tool, Winrar, Notepad++ Winmerge, Adb .
First time I have touched an android or even done any kind of stuff like this was Early August 2012. So not long at all, Someone might even remember I asked what should I do with my phone after I root it,, haha previous Iphone user.Thank God I changed! I have definately seen the light! Anyways now i have a question to the more experienced Devs. Eg; Lets just say I dont want increasing ringtone How do you pin point where in the apk to start editing i mean there are heaps of files its like looking for a needle in a haystack. One way I came close and pin pointed it is using a previous made mod and then used Winmerge to compare the differences, Problem is the differences in these to Apks is not just the Increasing ringtone, so when I winmerged them it picked out out the other differences Now this deffinatley narrowed it down. I have a feeling it has something to do with the Callnotifier.xml is this the only Xml?
Also Lets just say you dont have another apk to compare it to , how to you find out this stuff..
Another thing is I want to cook up a rom, but the way I want to do it is modding my own rom untill I am happy with it and then creating something like a nandroid without my personal data. then making it flashable for people. What tools is best used for this? I was thinking editing my nandroid and adding it to a cwm flash. but I think there is an easier way.
PS: You can have a look at my signature for my current device i am using
Thanks for you help
