No, the g-sensor is not a magnetic detector, common sense. One detects gravitational fields, the other detects magnetic fields, the two are not interchangeable..... thread should be closed/deleted
You can use the GPS as a compass kind of: http://www.visualgps.net/BeeLineGPS/
Not as good as a real compass but better than nothing.

Yeah something like that will require movement in order to determine the bearing, which is about as good as the hardware can do. The other option is to use Google Maps - the map is always oriented North-South, so if you can spot a couple of landmarks around you, then orientate the phone to those, then the phone itself will point North.
Cheers,
Steve.

The geocaching application GCz shows you where the sun should be at the current time on it's GPS display. So assuming it's not so overcast you can't see exactly where the sun is, it's very easy to orientate yourself and get a north reference.

Hello,
Is there a way to configure TomTom (v6 or v7) in pedestrian mode ?
I am using TomTom when I am on foot, and I am fed up with my current location being forced to be on the road !
As a pedestrian, I am often using road that are not written on TomTom's map. And sometimes I not using a road, to take a shortcut.
Please, let me know how to do able to see the real location of my position, and not the nearest road.
Chris
PS: I am not talking about the navigate to feature of TomTom which can actually take into account the fact that your are walking (in fact it just means that you can take one way roads in both directions).

i was going to suggest that feature, but, u already discounted that.
the only other thing i can suggest i using the 2D display instead of the 3D display, try it (if u didn't) and u will see why.
i think all such systems are designed to be used for driving, and will always use approximation that will calculate ur location to be the closest street if u r within a certain distance.
in the end, tomtom and similar programs are not going to be that useful for ur situation, why do u even use them?
Garmin XT's pedestrian mode actually plans routes that allow you to cut through parks for example, that does not allow cars.

I didn't know that as well, that's a neat feature. As some other people tried it ?
I have used pedestrian mode on XT
First make sure to set pedestrian mode, second make sure to change it to show current location, not on road, and set to off road.
however, when using Garmin TOPO I found that now matter what the settings it always routed me to the highway and back to my main point.
If someone can show me how to get it to route across a park would be great.
I was trying to do a canoe trip and it would not route to my next way point.
In the Garmin Mapsource it was fine, on XT it didn't look right at all.
TomTom
Yes in TomTom6 it is possible to plan routes in pedestrain mode, it is in the configuration options - you can select to have a default type of route (fastest, shortest, pedestrian, bike) or you can select every time you plan a route. However I have not tested to see how good the pedestrain maps are...

To my knowledge, there is no pedestrian map on TomTom. Each time you are considered to be on the nearest road, unfortunately.
Some how i got the GPS to work on Google maps....
Know my simple question is, when i type in directions from location A to location B, will the phone tell me to turn left or right like on a tom tom style GPS unit or do i just have to pa attention to my phone a lot while driving ?
hope this doesn't sound like a dumb question
Thanks Chris
google maps will track your location but won't tell you to turn left or right with sound. you can install tomtom or any other full-fledged gps software for your phone.
That's the TTS feature and as AthenaLod mentioned, you'll need a program like Tomtom or iGO8 for it; no free GPS program offers this.
So basically Google GPS is kinda pointless, since it doesn't give you a verbal notification, as far as you said about TOM TOM.......if i install it, it will work just like the units you put on your car windshield ?
So their isn't any free TOM TOM / Garmin apps out their
Thanks A Lot for your info and help
well amaze gps is free and it does do turn by turn directions, but i find it's accuracy not accurate.
http://www.amazegps.com/welcome.php
how i said i finally got it to gps to work on Google maps, it said i was with in 10 meters
how far of was amaze gps
No free TTS. A lot of people don't even use TTS so they just get Google Maps or Live. If you get Tomtom or iGO and properly configure them, you'll be good to go.

Are you talking about GPS position, map errors, or poor routing?
I would be surprised if the GPS position were any different with amAze than with anything else; in my experience, it's just fine.
I haven't seen any map errors, either, apart from the fact that a few of the street names in my area (eastern Massachusetts, USA) are wrong; the location of the streets and intersections, and whether they are one-way or not, has never been wrong in my experience.
I have seen a couple of strange routings where the directions take you a bit out of the way, but they do get you where you're going, in my experience.

amAze does not have Text-to-Speech (TTS), where the spoken directions will say "Turn left on Main Street" instead of just "Turn left in 500 feet." However, amAze does give spoken directions, which is a big advantage over Google Maps or Live Search -- you don't have to watch the screen to know where to turn.
If I were a delivery person or some such and relied on GPS navigation for my living, I'd definitely shell out for one of the commercial packages. However, for my use, amAze (www.amazegps.com) is plenty good enough and definitely worth carrying around on my phone in addition to Google Maps and Live Search.
so far www.amazegps.com works for my needs....thanks everbody
Yea google is pointless.... i mean when im in dorchester looking for a cell site and i cant find the actual voodoo church its located in, i hit street view and look at the front door, im sure tom-tom and garmin do that for you.
Out of the 60+ pep i know that have gps in their car, I know one that actually uses the retarded voice command.
I duno i guess some people need someone to tell them what to do.
Some dont.
haahhaha
Live Search does TTS.
Hi folks-
I've seen a couple applications in the marketplace that allow you to check out traffic cameras in your area. Traffic Edge doesn't seem to have anything for Northern Virginia and not much of DC while the other one scared me off with poor grammar and syntac in their ad. Anyone have a good experience with an application that has a lot of cameras (hopefully in my area)? NBC news once had one for my area, but since discontinued it.
If there isn't a good application per se, but another program that can display images if you point it to the right direction (I once had a weather tab on my Tilt that I could program to pull traffic images) I would appreciate it.
My thanks in advance!

You could try Speed Sentry
If you can find a speed camera database for your area it will warn you;
a: When you exceed a set limit
b: When you approach a camera
The usual way to do this in europe is to use the pocketgpsworld camera database either with your sat nav or with e.g. POI-Warner
If you buy POI_Warner for Navigon MN7 it runs stand alone without any sat nav software, again you need to subscribe to a camera database.

Hi all,
I use this one and it does the job for me.
Im working on a small app that runs in the background and warns when close to a camera, based on a poi-file which it downloads regurlarly (checks first if there's a difference between the file on the server and the one being in use). I'm still a bit concerned over the batterydrainage and its still in closed beta at the moment...
If I ever get it done (dont have much spare time to work on it) I'll post on xda and let ppl test it.
It pulls a file from a certain website, format of the file is something like
20.28653, 63.81951, "Storgatan västerut i Umeå -"
20.28674, 63.81951, "Storgatan österut i Umeå -"
20.41038, 67.84314, "Geofysiska 2 E10"
and simply matches the gps nmea to the coords in the file. So far I've only tried this for swedish coords, but shouldnt be impossible to use it outside .se.
All the app does is that it plays a sound when a camera is nearby or you are closing in on it (~ 500meters or so). No gui or anything else.
As I said, its a closed beta so far (tested by myself and two of my colleagues) so dont bother asking about it yet
I've created something similiar, but for Singapore only. But if you have coordinates, the site that provides the cam picture, I think it can be easily extended to other countries.

Thanks, this program has a great selection of cameras in my area and I'd even be willing to pay a monthly cost if needs be, but the problem is the camera images are completely distorted and a "finger painting bright colored" mess. Sucks

Same deal for me. Great selection of cameras, awful image quality. I emailed tech support and they had no clue why it was looking like that. Bummer.
Since our Galaxy Note has a barometer sensor inside, it would be nice to have some applications that can monitor atmospheric pressure changes.
I found two of them in Market, Barometer HD and Barograph. Barometer HD has poor graphics and no logging options and Barograph is nice but drains battery like hell. Are there other applicatons to monitor pressure changes ?
Right now I do not not the name but it can be found through S-choice (Samsung Apps).
The name is AndroSensor.

AndroSensor is working very very good for all sensors, including the barometer. thank you!
I think AndroSensor's main purpose is to see all the sensors on the device and check their state. It's not intended to monitor a special sensor and graphics are a bit spartan.
AndroSensor is like an app that checks your hardware running well, it seems that it cannot be use as a daily tool.
*#0*# - menu "Sensor"
If you press there "Barometer Selftest" you get the current temperature in C (celsius).
I was trying to test out different things that required a moving GPS position - obviously that's hard to do when you need to go driving around to do it! Currently fake GPS apps just show a single fake location - no path or movement - useless!
So if anybody else was in my position - this problem is solved!
Fake GPS Path - View on GitHub
Features
- Option to lock movement to roads
- Very intuitive drag and drop interface
- Full location viewing on a map
- Full bearing and speed support
Useful? Let me know!
nice. used a navigation map to test it.
only thing that'd be nice to have is also faking the compass. the navigation app i tested really hated the compass pointing to a different direction than the gps signal was moving in ;-)

Hey, good to hear. Could you clarify on random speed though? Do you mean a random fixed speed when you start it, or randomly increasing and decreasing speed while moving?
Great stuff. Works very well with Google Maps, tested on SGS2 and Sensation.
Many thanks.
random speed between X and Y I guess
Excellent and useful application mate. A very amazing way to test my GPS and Radar detections apps .
Anyway, is there a way or possibility to enter real adress (from x to y) ?

Sorry for my bad english. I meant random speed while moving. eg. between 50mph to 100mph. So while it moving, the speed randomly increase & decrease between the number. Thanks.
Thanks for the app!
I agree with the random speed support request.
Also, after using this, my GPS status seems to be messed up. For example, after I quit this app, even if GPS is set to on in the settings, my navigation app still thinks it's off. Only way to reset is to reboot...
Using CM7 on Motorola Triumph, if it helps.

That's strange.. no such issues here, but then I'm on CM9 and not CM7, so maybe they've fixed it? Did you force quit the app, or did you hit the stop button at the top right of the app? After stopping, how long did you wait for the device to pick up your real location? It can take 30 sec or so for the device to reconnect to satellites, etc.
I have the same issue than others, once you close the app, all the other apps see the gps as disabled (locked on fake dev locations mode), re-enabling it on settings doesn't work, reboot is needed.
V 1.2
- Option to randomize speed
- Search ability
- Stops fake gps at end of path
Hopefully the auto-stop at the end of the path will sort out the gps thing for you guys. For me it takes about 5-10 seconds at the end of the path for it to go back to the real location.
If you want to stop it in the middle of a path, go into the app and press the red stop button at the top right.
If anybody is interested about the randomize speed setting:
Code:
double diff = metersTravelled - lastMetersTravelled;
metersTravelled = lastMetersTravelled + Math.random() * 2.0 * diff;
Pretty straight forward.. at each step you will do either double the normal speed or stop completely, but if it falls behind it will 'catch up' and if it gets ahead it will 'slow down' so that you will still end the route at the almost the same time as if you had a fixed speed.
Does this work with Android 4.0.3? For some reason the APK keeps crashing when I try to bring it up. However, I'm able to run it easily on Android 2.x
My mistake, it works great.
Sorry

Interesting, tried v1.2, but my navigation software shows no variation in speed even though randomize speed is on. How frequent is metersTravelled updated? Maybe the navigation software averages the speed over a time much longer than your update interval and hence reporting a constant speed anyhow...
The GPS state issue after quitting your app reported earlier is still there.
A couple other suggestions:
1. Option to switch to US units (miles, mph)
2. Allow type in the speed instead of sliding, somehow can't seem to get it to the value I want by sliding... either too small or too large.
Thanks for your work!

Hey
Unfortunately, Google banned my developer account, so this app got taken down with the account. Trying to contact google play support to get it reinstated, but contacting Google support is very very difficult...
You can grab it off the 1st post at least!
If someone else with an account wants to host it, I'd be happy to release the code as GPL or other so they can upload it. If anybody is interested, let me know.
