Protected/Paid Market Apps on Fresh 2.0 working for me. - Hero CDMA Themes and Apps

Despite the changelog saying they wouldn't work, paid apps are showing normally in the market. Previously purchased apps installed fine.
Anybody else seeing them?

Some paid apps aren't actually "protected". For instance, FeedR and Halp! (awesome app that my friends wrote, came out yesterday) shows up as purchased, but Twidroid (free OR paid) does not.

Did this really deserve it's own thread?

i noticed this too. Before the rom, I couldn't find android firewall or chompsms.... they are bother there now. However, I couldn't find bar code scanner. So some work some don't.
I was able to get the bar code scanner form the makers website to download

After a bit more searching, It seems I'm seeing only previously downloaded protected apps. But this is still nicer than having to install from backups. No problems fetching updates from the market.

Try to see if DroidLive is there.. not the lite version... thats a protected Pay app

I kinda disagree. The threads are too full of crap and search is far from accurate. The moderators should make a better effort cleaning up the threads. The Fresh 2.0 thread is about 75% crap, redundancy and off topic.

where are the mods???

Flashed the new build over his old Eris 2.1 base ROM and I can see twidroid, DroidLive, Goggles, etc.

U disagree? I could see if this was a forum dedicated to fresh rom, but its not. Therefor thats why there is a specific fresh thread. I dont see why people dont get this simple concept.

Since this thread is still here...
Has anyone just tried changing their build footprint via build.prop like in all of the other 2.1 versions?

How about an XDA-Dev App Store?

There are zillions of apps and ROMs and stuff here on XDA-dev. Some are buried in forum threads going back years.
I quite like to browse through software and fixes just to see what's there, and in the forum format it's really difficult. Anyone think it would be good to drag all the software into a common, browsable location? We don't need all the threads of people saying that they are downloading now, or the development process of new versions, just the latest version and a description with a screen shot.
Ha, I hope this doesn't mean I'm volunteering to do it!
thumbs up for it.
great idea. it would make it easier for lot many people.
That would be great =)
I'm sure I posted something similar a couple of years ago, maybe I just thought it, not sure. Either way, this would be awesome. There was a ROM a while ago that had a built in program for getting updates for programs and new programs, can't remember what it was called; what happened to that? I think it was a Hermes ROM.
Is the Microsoft Marketplace an option, or are there costs/hassle involved with listing free stuff on there?
Apptodate it was called.

that's just to keep some apps updated, not to install new ones.
and the reason for not using microsoft marketplace is because 1: it needs to go through microsoft first and 2: it costs money to get your app there.

I think you're thinking of Pocket Download Manager. You can download it seperately from the ROM, but you have to register it (for free though).
Also, an XDA-Developers App store has been done many times. There was Pocket Download Manager, Jak Portal (which became OpnMarket), Gecko (now defunct it seems), FireSale (Gecko successor, also Defunct). It seems only the first 2 are actually still active, but IMO OpnMarket is the most promising.
Sound idea
Might have gained me a night's sleep
Great idea!
I'm volunteering to do it too.
Sounds like a plan to me, lets home some mods read this.

New Home Screen Alternatives

I checked the first 3 pages of the forums and didn't see this posted.
Here are some upcoming home replacements for Android. One name that should be familiar to us old WinMo users and a "newcomer."
http://www.tat.se/home/
http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/pre...gs-support-for-symbian-and-android-along.html
they both look pretty cool but I think tathome looks like it might be a little more to my liking.
SPB isnt out yet, is tathome available yet, i didnt see a download.
+1 for TAT home it looks like it could be NICE I checked out the video (good music and all ;-)) here: http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/15/tat-home-the-gesture-powered-3d-home-screen-your-android-device/
I used SPB Mobile Shell 3.x with my Touch Pro and I wasn't too impressed.
*** EDIT ***
Here is a video of Mobile Shell http://pocketnow.com/tech-news/mwc-video-spb-mobile-shell-50-on-android IMO Mobile Shell is suffering from what it always has LAG!!!!! Even on the N1 it looked slow, maybe because it's BETA.

Hrm, TatHome looks like what I envisioned Android 'should be' , I'm liking the look it quite a bit!! Next: to find out whether it really runs that smoothly on my Hero. 3d and graphics are great, but if it slows my phone down in the slightest its automatically going to get turned off.

Why would it make them not want to develop for it? Because some devices have different specs? I'm just curious.

Yes there are a lot of different spec'd Android phones out there but I think he is referencing the fact that Android apps are easier to "warez" than the apps on other OS's. All you have to do is sign up for the paid app extract the .apk post it somewhere. Also any dev can try to "reverse engineer" the app, change a few components and BAM it's on the Market as their "original" creation. Just my .2 cents

that is correct. when swype was first leaked I was actually talking to them about the bennifits of releasing it through the market instead of through manufacturers and one of the biggest concerns that was brought up was the fact that security for apps is too lax. now dont get me wrong everyone knows that for every security mesure there is always a way around it but android security just sucks thats why for the most part people afften have a free version and a donate version. if people can try it and like it then they are more likely to buy it rather than just pirate it. setcpu is a perfect example of this. sure the dev could have made it a protected app (but being a member here at xda he probably knew it was pointless) but he offers it free here and then if you like you can buy from the market to donate to help keep him developing.
so basically all im saying is...ok we all (me included) have pirated apps but if you like the app make sure to go buy it from the market and help keep these people developing for us.
I know I went off on a rant there but without intrest in app development this great platform will fail.
I might be the only here without pirated apps then haha. I did have CoPilot once, but I didn't like it much so I got rid of it. The only time I ever use something pirated is to try it. If I like it and feel the developer should get credit, then fine, I'll donate/buy it.

same here the only thing I am using pirated right now is swype but thats only becuase there is no way to buy it. but thats also because im a cheap ass and maily use free apps unless I really find something useful but to date the only things that I have bought are setcpu and beautiful widgets. im trying cachemate now but it really doesnt seem to be very helpful. I wish I knew a little more about programing there is an app for the iphone that I would love to have on my hero.
i played around with "pandahome" some yesterday. it seems beta right now but they are apparently coming out with pandahome2 soon. it's a good idea, just not quite finished yet. (fc's and whatnot)

Something up with Launcher Pro?

The website and forum are offline, and people over on Android Forums are reporting that their version of Launcher Pro has 'expired'. Anyone know anything?
Mine is working
Not getting the expired message but wanted to search the launcher pro forums for an issue I have and get a 403 Forbidden page.
My LauncherPro is working fine, it seems these posters may have downloaded something - two threads so far, but one of the guides said these reports are popping up all over the place. Be careful what you download and install!
a coworker of mine had the issue today of the launcher actually expiring and had no way out of his browser, and i guess the launcherpro website was down? anyway, I'm just reposting the link from another website, since I typically come to xda to find answers to stuff like this... either manually type this into your ANDROID browser, or if you could somehow make it to this page from your phone, just click this link... from your phone lol
market://search?q=pnamerg.adw.launcher
it is the direct adwlauncher link to the android market!
hope this helps! =)
My LPP is also working fine. ADW or GO launchers would work for people with issues. I was also able to get to the site just fine (launcherpro.com), but yes, the forums were down.
Most likely a switch to a different server or hosting company, or website update. That's the simplest explanation.

Same with me - no problems.
Here's an update
Seems the developer has screwed up on this one. From this post on Android Forums (this is Fede speaking):
That's my bad actually, I didn't realize that if you had an old LP Beta set as your default, you wouldn't be able to use it to open the market to download a newer version after it expired.
Future versions will automatically send you to the market to get the new version. At this point, the only thing you can do is install ADB and use it to install a newer version, or use ADB to uninstall LP and then install from the market again.

He's generating a lot of ill will from this.
For some reason, a small percentage of LP users decided to be idiots and not update the app for the last month (0.8.2 came out Dec. 7th) and now the previous version has expired.

No, that isn't the problem. They're running an old beta that has expired. Those who use the market version, and those who paid for the app, aren't having the problem.
Can anyone access the launcherpro website? I get a blank page. This is really weird because Fede is usually very responsive.
Fede seems to be hiding, this is a PR disaster for him. The best thing to do at this point is to be forthcoming, own up to it, and give clear instructions on how to fix it.

I have to agree, Fede needs to own up to whatever this problem is. Even though I think the vast majority of LauncherPro users like myself have no problem, we keep the app updated and got it from the market. I wonder if this will effect his re-write of LauncherPro he has been promising?
Fede is doing a complete Rewrite.
Changes take time.....Not, everything is as easy and as fast as we would all like it to be.
Complications do happen. Its part of the game.
Be Patient......I'm sure he will get it all fixed soon enough.

With all due respect, This is more than a little 'complication'. Rewrites do take time, but if your customer base has lost faith in your product because you don't show excellenct support on a critical app like a launcher, you won't have anyone to rewrite for...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I don't think many will lose faith with Fede at all. And those that do can find another launcher to moan about.
Fede has a very loyal fan base, and most will stick with him as his is one of the best, if not the best, creation on this os.
People will always moan, and then find something else to moan about.
Fede won't have anyone to rewrite the app for?
What a ridiculous thing to say.

Who said it wasn't? The point is, his program is everywhere on Android phones, many people who have no technical skills at all have it, and it seems to have 'broken' their phones. His lack of statement regarding the problems and offering workaround for it are the problem. As for 'finding another launcher to moan about' really? That's all it is, the consumer's fault? I think there's a job for you at AT&T.

No, not really. The anger is all over the internet. He needs to do damage control to help his reputation.
I love the LauncherPro program, I've had it since I started, I paid for it right off the bat. I do that with all developers. I will say I haven't found him to be very forthcoming with assistance - then again, until now (and still, for me), there haven't been issues like this that needed addressing. My only point is he needs to get in front of this and fix it or yes, his reputation will be damaged for many. Not you, not me, but there are plenty of others who are extremely unahppy.
Apparently Lifehacker has been in touch with Fede or found a response somewhere on the interwebs.

Just remembered this for those who may not know:
ViewSonic.com has several pages of information and resources at

You will find a row of tabs at the top that will provide everything from sales info

Favorites is my favorites tab because the list a bunch of links to commonly

The Favorites links point to APK downloads that you should be able to install on any device, so it shouldn't matter if you are rooted and modded.
For at least one of the apps they link to (Android System Info), the version they link to is quite outdated, and the market has much more recent version, that works and doesn't crash all the time.
sstair,
That one has NEVER worked worth a hoot for me!

I think the Gtablet Favorites page is primarily for users running stock ROM who don't have Market. As such, links are to APK files hosted on third-party sites and often the latest versions are not available.
Another good resource for off market apk's is 4shared.com and then search for .apk Tons of great apps that you may be looking for
Everybody has probably already noticed this, but I think its cool that Viewsonic links to XDA on the favorites page. I don't have 8 posts so I can't link. Just go to the link in the 1st post and look under the developer resources heading.
I agree, that Viewsonic linked to XDA was one additional thing that encouraged me to go with the Gtab. How many other companies do you see encouraging Dev's?

Not many. I think Viewsonic is the only company I've seen that is pretty much blatantly endorsing devs. If Viewsonic didn't like what people were doing with their devices, that link would not be there. Its a nice change from all these OEMs trying to stop devs or at least slow them down.

Pretty much every company that doesn't wanna deal with the development, as well as troubleshooting and support, themselves.
Yea it would be kinda cool if it was a "Hey, here is XDA, you should check them out if you don't like out development stuff", but it wasn't, it was more of a "We're not doing development, so you might as well try here and see what you can get".

Task Manager on Valhalla CM7 hybrid

okay, as of right now, if you hold down the home button in any ROM on this phone, you'll get the recent apps/Task manager button. The button has no apk linked to it so if you hit it, naturally, it will give you a force close error
however the easy fix to this is to take it from any SGS4g rom with it in there.
Just copy jobmanager.apk to your /system/app folder via any root enabled file explorer. and then you're done
I still can't post in the developer thread, so I thought i'd post this here.
Edit: If task manager and that button is absolutely essential, here is a quick fix, however it will produce a memory leak, and that's why the apk was removed in the first place, so do this at your own risk!
Task Manager was removed because of memory leak issues. I know it's a lot to read but it was mentioned in the Valhalla Black thread.
read the op its been spelled out and answered neurmous times if u can find the rom and the downmload link u can sure as **** read that the task manager was removed... sorry to be an ass but really

While you're at it look up "Define: memory leak"
I don't think you were being an ass, thanks for clarifying this. I didn't even see anything about a memory leak. I just thought you removed it because of it being a samsung apk which you removed.
Sorry for posting this, it's just I found that the task manager button freezes the phone. I apologize.
The only problem is that you now have a button that gives you a FC window.
Would it be too difficult to modify the window to remove the button and add more recent apps?
I know what a memory leak is. I don't need google to define it for me. I also can only speak from my own experience and also from what I have searched. I have found nothing about touchwiz task manager and memory leak. I have also never seen it myself. I use task manager throughout the day mostly to kill some troublesome apps, such as dood's music. I've never had memory issues nor have I've come across others in this forum with them. Please enlighten me and point me to some sources. I will eat my hat. Also in fairness to the OP, ravers OPs did not state that TM was removed and why. Also that thread is huge. I see many posts telling others not to clutter up the thread with issues such as these and to make their own post. When they do they are chastised. When we share something, we should be prepared for all issues, questions and excitement. If it's too much to bare, maybe limit our betas to a select group.

Hi man - that's not cool - show the man some respect, he is investing a lot(and I mean A LOT) of his free(yes he is not getting paid for that) to bring us awesome stuff - so even if you think his is wrong don't be such a cynical...
And just my guess - if Raver removed it due to his findings(memory leaks) , I don't think he did it for nothing....
About the problem where you press the home and get FC because there is no app... I think that in order to set the binded app that will be launched on press you should edit something in /system/usr/keyboard/melfas_touchkey.kl but I don't know exactly what to change it to(and any how I'm not sure that's the right solution)
Don't take it personally but It's sad to see the misrespect our Devs are getting around here - and if you didn't meant it that way - I'm taking my words back.

Not to mention pushing regular users away.... I find myself reading these forums less and less often due to the lack of educated users (or lack of effort to at least try and find the answer themselves)... Unfortunately I'm not experienced with the inner workings of android so I can't be of much help to bhundven and the other developers working to get us a new kernel/cm7/miui/etc other than testing.
