If wired tether was working on any of the roms would the phone run hot. If I use wireless tether for much more than about 30-40 mins its crazy hot.
I guess this hasn't been addressed enough. *Cough* Search *Cough*
The Wired tether app, though loosely based on our phones pieces, doesn't work for us. We think the commands it uses are wrong.
The MNS stuff works in 2.1 Roms for some people.
Your phone wouldn't get hot. The phone gets hot now due to the battery having to run both the CDMA Radio and the WiFi Radio and the processor for the phone, its a lot of strain on the battery which = heat. Using MNS or Wired tether is like you were syncing and can actually charge the battery while you use it as opposed to loseing battery power like WiFi Tether.
How to tether Sprint Hero
I thought this was posted here. i found this info a few days ago but i forgot where, so if your the source or you know it just let me know.
\Steps to do wired tether with sprint hero (i dont think root is required)
Step 1 - Go to Settings>Wireless Controls and take of Mobile Network
Step 2 - Go to Settings>Wireless Control>Mobile Network Settings>Mode of operation Change this to 1x ONLY
Step 3 - Go back to Settings>Wireless Controls and Turn on Mobile Network and Mobile Network Sharing (in windows it ask for driver, the htc sync drivers will work posted below)
Step 4 - Check connectivity by going to a web site.
Step 5 - To get EVDO working just go back to Settings>Wireless Controls>Mobile Network Settings and change Mode of operation to Hybrid and EVDO should come up.
Step 6 - Enjoy the EVDO tether
I am pretty sure that it doesn't use phone as modem. i don't have that service and it works.
If you get Error 67, it probably because the phone is in evdo mode, must be in 1x to initiate connection.
also phone doesn't get hot.
That's the MNS race condition. It doesn't use PAM, but it is a ***** to time just right.
i havent had many issues timing it, i just do them one after the other. when im in the car on my way to AC from NYC i have rev a the whole way down. its nice.

although i will say this is the 3rd/4th thread about this (I made the first, and am always asking about it in the dev threads)
the newest 2.1 rom does not include MNS... which is a real bummer for me

I have noticed this with EVERY ROM I used in the past, and I am still noticing it now. When I Wifi tether (I think it is when I WiFi tether for a long time) the EV connection drops, reconnects, then tries to send/receive data, fails to do so, then drops again. This happens until I turn airplane mode on and then off. Most of the time, this doesn't even work. Yes, I do have USB debugging on. In case you are wondering, I am running Cellular South 2.1 "DangerRom 2.1" with a few mods (Just removed GSD.apk) anyone know what to do to fix this?
BUMP
Anyone?
I can't really say I've experienced this...not sure..

I'm suddenly experiencing it. Investigation would be really nice, if anyone is willing to help. But mine is using mns. PRi 2.11_02 or whatever it is, from DC 1.1b5, and RegawMOD 2.1t is the rom I use.
Not sure if it would have anything to do with it, but try to see if it has anything to do with the amount of bandwidth you are using on it when it happens. I know CS doesn't usually mess with anyone tethering, but if your using a significant amount of bandwidth, they might be pushing your data off the network for a minute.
Reason being because I have noticed that the phone MUST have some kind of throttling going on when it's data just to the phone (how many times have you waited for youtube to start and then it has to sit and cache in the middle of the video) Yet, if I tether I get up to 6mbps, and can stream video like crazy. At the same time if I connect my phone via wifi, (to my 6mbps dsl) I get the good speeds and streaming, etc. Just my 2cents.
I was thinking it was a carrier security measure as well. Sometimes, I can turn on airplane mode and the problem is fixed (for a little while at least). Another thing, It will not just drop once and then reconnect. It will keep dropping and reconnecting every 3 or 4 seconds until I stop tethering for a little while. I also noticed that, when I experience this problem, I can use the internet on my phone with no problem, but once I try to tether, it starts messing up again. Maybe we can find a way to trick the network/ROM from knowing its tethering? I don't know.
Edit: "I have noticed that the phone MUST have some kind of throttling going on when it's data just to the phone" What do you mean by "throttling"?
I have a linksys wifi N router at home and my laptop connects at around 144mbps, however my phone only connects at around 72mbps..
Also my laptop always sits on my coffee table which is about 15' from my router (through one wall) and has excellent signal. But my phone usually only has good signal in the same spot. It only usually lights up like two of the wifi indicators.
Does everyone else have this issue? Are the wifi chips just not strong in the phone or what?
My laptop is currently saying that it is recieving at 54mbps, my mesmerize is showing the same speed. Although my laptop is stating that I have excellent strength, and my phone is showing fair strength. I think the wifi is only so-so in this phone, I rooted last night and just got wifi tethering going. With the phone broadcasting a hostspot next to the laptop it only gave a fair signal strength. I'm not sure if the strength of a wifi hotspot has anything to do with the recieving end of the signal though.

I've had this issue with both my droid and my blackberry (when I used my blackberry). I think that the wifi capabilities in phones are not as good as they are in computers.
but the reason I'm asking this is this phone is supposed to have wifi N radio in it.. Older phones only had G antennas which are only capable of 54mbps.. wifi N is theoretically capable of up to 300mbps, I've never seen anything actually connect at that speed, but it would seem that my phone which is brand new should atleast connect at the same speed as a 2 year old wifi N laptop???

If your router is only G that's the max speed you will get?
Wifi is a pain in general to troubleshoot, as there could be many, many reasons why it is slow or not working at all.
General questions to be asked are:
Do you have security enabled wifi?
What kind of encryption are you using?
How many devices are connected to the network? (Wired or wireless)
Is the router set to send a wireless N signal? (most routers have that optioned, but not always running as most devices are not wireless N compatible)
I've had my phone connected at several wifi's (I travel a lot for work and am in hotels all the time) and my connection speed varies. At home I have great connection and speed test to 5megs a second download (wireless N--it connects) currently at a hotel in Colorado, 1480kbps download (wireless G)
I still stick by my thoughts as far as the wifi on the phones will never be as good as the wifi in a computer, be it a laptop or a desktop. Phones just don't have the battery power to hold a super strong/fast wifi signal.
I have wifi speed problems also but my first gen ipod touch does not seem to have issues

yes, the router is set to wifi N or actually it's set to all!!! I have security enabled..
There's only two devices running wifi (laptop/cell phone)
I get fast download speeds like 5000kbps down/2500kbps up when using the speedtest.net app..
But when I go to wifi settings and click on my router once it's connected whether I have Good (usually) or excellent it's only connected to my router at 72Mbps.. I have a static IP set for it..
I guess mobile phone wifi chips just aren't up to par with laptop chips

Those are my sentiments exactly. Even with it not being as fast, it's plenty fast for everything I need it to do, but 3g is fast enough for me generally. I only connect to wireless when I'm not in good cell service.
Been playing around a bit with my phone and came across this option wondering what exactly does it do. First I'm assuming it's an HTC only option because I'm not seeing it on other manufactures forums (so if it turns out to be worth it I know I've got to stick with HTCs). Second by enabling the option in increasing performance is it more tailored for receiving data from the AP only or if the phone is AP (tethered, hotspot) would I get any performance gains (range, speed)? Lastly while tethered does the manner matter? If I've enabled tethering by any means would it make any difference. Is it the kernel, wifi antenna, or app have anything to do with it. Does it need to be written to specifically take advantage of the feature? Basically even if enabling it does anything what's the point if I'm just going to be wasting battery at the end of the day because it's an HTC only feature that no one is coding for.
I was wondering this too on my mytouch 4g!

I enabled it on my phone and the ping/jitter goes down considerably when I ping my phone from my Desktop, versus having the option unticked..
interesting...

Does the wifi on phones have a cap on data speeds? At school, we have a 700 down and 500 up connection and when I hook my phone up with wifi, it goes to like 27 down and about 20 up at the most. Not that I need that type of speed but something that I found interesting and was curious about.

What happened was, I did a speedtest on my laptop and got the high results and right after did it on my phone. I did a couple tests, not just one and they were all around the same, and there were no anomalies.
I found one thing it does, on my mytouch 4g slide, if the screen was off, wifi would barely work. Skype, iheartradio, etc would stop streaming until I turned it on. I have no idea what it actually does though. Eg. if wifi was even slowed down to 1mbps, streaming should still work, so they are doing something crazy. PS my wifi is set to always on. Weird.

very old thread, unrelated phone. When the phone goes in sleep or screen is off, most downclock the cpu to save energy, this will reduce network transfer speeds. Depending on settings, some will actually disconnect during screen off.
Hello, I'd like any feedback from any folks using the TB as their main or primary internet connection via hotspot and/or usb modem mode.
I'd like to get rid of my dsl connection, and use the TB with the unlimited 4g data.
Concerns I have include latency (for steam/online gaming), streaming stability (netflix etc), upload/download speeds and hitting any soft or hard xfer caps (usenet etc).
Since this would be the main internet connection and I have alot of devices around the house, avoiding/negating simultanious connection caps is also a concern.
Has anyone used the TB in conjunction with a normal home router, like with wrt-54/dd-wrt or a newer device like netgear wndr3700, or any router with usb modem support.
Ideally I'd prefer plug the TB into a router via usb and use it as the main internet, or alternatively have the router connect over wifi to TB, with the router performing NAT and managing ports/upnp/etc for the rest of the network devices.
Do a search for "home isp".
I have never used it as a main connection before but I have used the Wifi on it many times.. Although it is fast, it will not work as fast as a main line, especially when gaming.. Also, the ulimited 4G wireless hotspot will not always be available, unless rooted, I talked with a verizon rep about it yesterday he said although it is free right now, they will take that away later. When connecting multiple devices to the phone the speed will only go down.
Now, depending on your ISP I could be wrong, it may be faster, but if your signal is not stable your internet connection on your PC will not be either.
Just a couple things to consider before you go through with you idea. One thing you might do is try to set it up temporarily and see how it goes, but keep your DSL service up. That way you can get a better idea of what to expect.
Just because you have unlimited data on your phone doesn't mean you will have unlimited on tethering... I believe its $20 for 2GB. And if you think you'll get away with sneaking behind Verizon's back your very mistaken. They can see your doing it and dont expect them to put up with you sucking down their LTE without paying for it for very long.

I agree its not going to happen!!!
The wife and I just switched to Sprint and got two GS5's. Her wifi access is tolerable, she can play a youtube video. I can barely even load a facebook feed. My wifi is total garbage, so I went and installed wifi fixer:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.wahtod.wififixer
And the alerts say that it's constantly having to reassociate the Wifi. Even with this in the background fixing things up, I can't use my wifi. I also googled the problem a lot, and found that someone manually switching the IP type to a manual IP gave them better luck. Did not help me out.
The Sprint Spark data is incredible, it actually beats my home broadband internet. But I'm in the basement so I can't just use my data :'(
Background on the phone, BOTH are stock out of the box rom, but with TWRP, Root, 4 Way Reboot Menu, and unlocked hotspot flashes.
What WiFi setting are you using and what model router?
Before I tried the setting on the advanced it was stock out of the box DHCP, then I switched it to Static to lock an IP, with little difference. Back to DHCP for now.
I can ask for better details because the router is in someone else's room, but it's the one that Century Link (DSL ) Gave us.
LMAO LOOK AT YOUR LINK SPEED. THAT IS TERRIBLE ALMOST NON EXSISTENT. You need to modify some settings or add a capable router to that. Here is what a decent link speed looks like on this device and this device is capable of more than this.
To add to my previous post is my guess that WiFi you currently have is not mimo meaning multiple people can't be connected at the same time with sufficient link speeds. Your wife was the first to connect and it is giving her 90% of the link speed which is why she can and you cant. Only a new router can correct this more than likely. You can disconnect everyone else from the WiFi toggle your WiFi off then on and go check your link speed with no one else connected just you and I'm gonna guess you will have around 5 MBPS link speed. FYI on link speed it's not that you need a huge number for the link speed to browse the Internet but a minimal of 30 MBPS is needed to have an ideal Web experience especially when it comes to viewing images on Web pages.
I know that century link is worthless but I doubt it's the problem. I can stream youtube, Hulu and all that kinda stuff pretty decently on my laptop, decently on the wife's phone, worthless on my phone. Any hour, when everyone is asleep, I still have a piece of ****.
Last night I remembered that when I did the hotspot unlock I accidently did the NC1 or whatever it is Hotspot fix file, then corrected it to be the ND2 file. So I went and fully reloaded the phone back with the stock TWRP backup and didn't help

You should re read I never said century link was the issue
Oh I'm sorry, I thought that's what the link speed was referring to. We used to have cable but our neighborhood doesn't have new cabling or something so they can't work here.
It's just weird and frustrating that it's just MY phone. The other 4 GS5's in the house do fine.

Link speed is from the WiFi router itself. what happens is your WiFi starts at (for example) 52 MBPS with one device connected. Then that gets split each time a new device connects. When you have a new router that's more capable it does not split the link speed as much with each connected device. Link speed is the speed in which the device is communicating with the WiFi router
,
My phone gets 5, the wife's gets 117. My best I've gotten was 39mbps on this phone, but at 4AM when everyone is asleep I still only get 5mbps.
You can try forgetting the WiFi network then add it back and see if that makes any difference

Also, check whether the router supports 5 GHz over 2.4. If so, try switching to that.
You may find with the cable wireless gateways that you're better off buying your own.
Comcast's isn't bad but get more than 10 feet away and you start seeing it drop off.
