Can HTC Desire's dialer be installed onto Nexus one? Without rooting?
I am deciding... which one to buy.. Nexus one or Desire? After a lot of thinking and reading, HTC's smart dialer is the only thing I will truly miss on nexus one. After using touchflo/sense on WM for years, I have grown tired of HTC's eyecandy...but their dialer is just too..hmmm...smart!
PS: okay.. may be Desire's black theme too.. can nexus one theme be changed to black? without rooting?
PPS: I don't have anything against rooting... I will do it soon..but I want to first get comfortable to the jargon of android world and figure out things.
This is about the third or fourth thread in this forum asking exactly the same thing. The answer is no. None of the HTC apps will run on stock Android; they depend on HTCs framework, which is proprietary. The only way to use the HTC apps is on an HTC ROM, like Desire. But you CAN start with a Desire ROM, and push all the stock apps to it, and morph the statusbar back to light-colored, so it feels aaaaaalllmost the same as stock, but with HTC apps. You don't have to use touchflo (Sense, as it's called on Android) just because you're using a Sense-based ROM. Make sense?
yup. thank you.
Is there any other smart dialer available? one that can be installed?

Try Dialer One from the market
My vote goes to Nubdialer from the market...
"Dialer One" better than HTC.

+1 it acts just like the HCT dialer but looks more stock eclair (better imo) and is more customizable.
+1 NubDialer ! Jk, Dialer One is pretty awesome too .
I have the EXACT same problem as the originator of this thread. It's just that I already have the Nexus and I really don't like all HTC eye-candies, as @arkavat is also saying. I just want the dialer which, in my opinion, is better than the Dialer One or NubDial that are available for Nexus.
But if this means installing an OS with all other HTC crap, I'd rather live with Dialer One.
I also used several htc phones, after using nexus, i am now using the dialer one, it's better than the htc dialer.

How is it better?
I can tell you how it may not be:
T9 filtering in HTC dialer works not only on the first word/letters but on any part of the name. Can Dialer one do this?
T9 filtering in HTC dialer works on both contacts and call history in the same box. Doesn't Dialer one use different tabs?
When I scroll down contacts in a T9 search, I see call history and immediately below the other contacts in alphabetical order. Aren't these on different screens in Dialer one?
HTC Dialer is fast, I seem to remember Dialer one being slower
I prefer the layout of HTC dialer, but that may just be me.
If you can find me one dialer that does all of what the HTC dialer can do, please PM me!
The lack thereof is my main reason for flashing Desire HD roms instead of CM / Nexus type of ROMS on my HD2!

Is there a way to change the phone dialer/app to the one like the Cyanogen dialer, on a sense rom? I prefer that dialer. Haven't seen it brought up. Thanks

We'd all love it, but as far as I know, it can't, or at least isn't done.
Have you given "dialer one" off the market pretty cool
It is possible to install the Android HTC dialer app onto the Droid2? I just can't stand how unintuitive the stock dialer is. I've been using HTC phones for the past 3 years and they're dialers are great.
Right now, I'm using Dialer One, but it still not as well done as the HTC dialer.

Dialer One is probably your best bet. You can't get the HTC dialer.
Hey guys,
I was just wondering if some of the sense 3.0 widgets can be developed for G2x?? Atleast the sense 3.0 lock screen. Is it anyway possible or on the cards or should i stop dreaming ??

Its great to dream, but in this case you should stop dreaming. The G2x and sense roms has 2 different framework so it will never work and even if it could it would take tons of modding that wouldn't be worth the trouble. Its similar to trying to put a Ferrari body on a Mercedes chassis.

There's a app called "Go To Lockscreen" and it pretty much gives you the features of the Sense lock screen. Its a good app.

im not sure if you wanted sense for the same reason i did. i wanted sense for the dialer + messaging client. althought we probably wont get the sense dialer, there is an app called GO Dialer, and GO Sms that is similar to the sense applications. Stock android dialer SUCKS! anyways hope this helps

The lock screen, dialer, messaging client and contacts client are the only good things about Sense. The vanilla clients are boring with less features. What's cool about the Sense contacts client is that contact pictures are just there with no loading. The vanilla contact client lags a little bit and there is a delay in showing the pictures.

Sense has some neat stuff but most of it is cosmetic.
Launcher Pro already has some Sense-like widgets built in and are themeable. They look like Sense out of the box. You can also customize Launcher Pro's dock bar to match any version of Sense.
Go Dialer and Go SMS are popular because you can theme them to look like whatever you want. I've also used "Dialer One" which was a "HTC SENSE Dialer" Clone at one time. I think they've went down their own path since but still has the same great functionality.
Moral of the story, you can make you phone look and feel like a Stock-Sense rom without having the stock-sense rom.
And I think they're porting Sense over in the O2x forums (directed at the second poster). MIUI, Sense, and CM7 are the 3 roms that should be ported to every phone. Completely do-able though. Nexus One has all 3.... but maybe I was spoiled.
It was possible on my hd2 windows phone. So I would say yes, it is possible. That phone had a much bigger following so I will not say it is propable.

as things have been said, launcherpro, GoTo LockScreen, things like that can give the customized feeling of not being on stock android...
I think the problem is we are on a LG phone trying to port a HTC client, Samsung Galaxy series never got it to work fully, just my opinion. I am not saying it is not possible, I am one that loves options and would like to see it happen though.

You can find software that looks like Sense such as Go Messenger but there is no contacts client out there with the deep integration/features you get with Sense. The Contacts Client is the only thing I like about HTC and I have yet to see one done better. Just ain't going to happen.

That's the problem isn't it. You have to decide whether you want the pretty UI of Sense, or the speed and battery life of CM7. Or you could try to find a Sense ROM that has the battery life of CM7. Have you tried BinDroid? I tried that recently and was getting 48 hours out of a charge. There are two versions. A partially themed 2.3.5 version, and a fully themed 2.3.3 version.
Unfortunately you'll never get any Sense dialer/contacts running on a non-Sense ROM.
I keep coming back to Sense. Sure CM7 is slicker than a buttered weasel, but no one is batter at the Dialer, Contacts, Clock, Calendar etc than HTC.
Dialler one is good replacement for sense dialler

In my opinion Email, Calendar and Dialer apps from Sense 2.1 look bad. They are polished in Sense 3.0 but instead of Dialer I still use GO Contacts Ex. You will try it and never get back to stock one.
I recommend ex dialer
And for messaging go sms pro is the best
Ex Dialer is good... Thanks!
I am a fan of Go SMS Pro, however the recent update only does a back up and restore to the cloud!
I wonder , Why did they have to remove the backup and restore to the SD card option? :banghead:

Just use sms backup and restore

I love the sense contacts; till now I did not find a proper replacement for it even after trying all kinds of contact apps. One problem I see mainly is they can never completely replace the built-in dialer & phonebook they keep poping up in some scenarios even after wasting making the new app default. This results in RAM wastage.
Thought I'd share a little trick I found in the HTC Rezound forum... turns out you can easily peel off the Sense-style lock screen and leave your One X with clean-looking stock ICS lock. You simply need to rename /system/app/HtcLockScreen.apk to something else, reboot, and voila, Sense doesn't skin it. I renamed it using adb shell.
It doesn't work perfectly however... I've already found a couple bugs where incoming calls don't show up on the screen (only in the status bar), and if you use something like Google Music that is supposed to add controls to the lock screen, only a black background is shown. I'm sure these functions are supposed to be handled by the Sense Lock UI which is no longer there. Maybe somebody smarter than me can figure out how to fix, or maybe this is just a useless crippled hack.

Sure, but there hasn't been any mention of it in the HOX forums, and this is the first phone with Sense4, which is why I linked to it here after finding this neat-o trick. That is all.
This is really cool, I'll definitely have to get around to trying it out sometime soon.

I doubt it, most of HTC's other apps are complete replacements of stock, whereas the Sense lockscreen is really just a skin sitting on top of ICS.
So it makes sense why incoming calls, texts, etc. using HTC's stock apps don't show up on the ICS lockscreen (they want to be handled by HTC's skin)....but I'm not sure why Google Music won't show controls since it isn't an HTC app. Curious!
Nice tip! Thanks for the info!
