Quick (and maybe stupid) question from a newbie:
I have been looking around and reading all the threads about flashing new roms and I have one final question before I start.
After I flash a new ROM, do I have to go through ALL the steps again to flash a new Rom, (like flash it with the button ROM and then the T-Mobile Rom) or can I just flash a brand new ROM. Or does it depend on the ROM's themselves?
Anyway, I would like to thank everyone who posted all this great help on here, its VERY helpful and easy for anyone to understand.

Your question all depends on what you are flashing. Do you have a G3 or G4? If you have a G3, then once it's unlocked, you can flash away to your hearts content. No need to worry about downgrading or flashing extroms or IPL/SPL issues. However if you have a G4, if it's unlocked, you can flash anything you want (just be sure you're not flashing anyything with an extrom or IPL/SPL).

Im getting a little frustrated that people is too lazy to ready and research for its own.
Surf into the forum, do some research, this kind of question has been already answered in every thread of the forum. Oh my... no offense, believe me but please do some research.
Best regards.
Yeah, sorry, found it after I posted, it was actually on a thread about a specific ROM. Thanks TaurusBullba for the quick reply. Oh, and my 8125 is G3 and I just flashed AKU3.3 to it, works pretty good, but I'm already itching for something new.

You did the right thing by asking. Better to look like an idiot with a working Wizard than be a silent fool with a brick, right. Good luck on your journey. There are a lot of ROM's out here right now. Choose wisely.
BTW, welcome aboard.
Thanks, jwzg, right now I'm searching around trying to find info on making (or cooking, i guess) my own ROMS. There are so many great ones out there, but I have also loved customizing things myself. Thanks again everyone, your all very helpful around here.
Totally new to the site...I got my first PDA a couple of days ago, i've got the o2 XDA STELLAR - which i belive i'm in the right part of the forum for..
Now i'd like to installed a new ROM from on here, i belive Dutty's is the one i'd like to go for, could someone please give me the direct link to the latest ROM to download for my phone please, as i'm a bit confused to which one it is! I'll learn in time!

oooo not a good first post... good luck sir
this dutty latest
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=398271
but please read the wiki and gweni before flashing.
Hi,
Since you are new to the PDA arena and also this site, I would seriously recommend waiting untill you have gained some knowledge and understanding of how your device works.
Read the Wiki as advised above and digest as much information and terminology as possible.
We are all here to help, some of us Developers and others power users, but you will find that everyone has started at the same place as you.
Whilst every effort is made by the Developers here to avoid problems whilst flashing/upgrading your devices software, problems are inevitable from time to time, so it is important that you read and understand as much information as you can before upgrading your device, if things do go wrong, the worst thing you can do is panic. Stay calm, have a read and search through the forums for similar issues and then make a post.
Please read the Wiki here
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser
and I would then advise, when you are ready, to try Leo's latest Rom, Dutty has been very busy of recent and has not released a new Rom for a while (although his work is very good)

Cheers,
Beasty

There are so many things wrong with your post ... but i won't waste time on counting them ... here is what you need to do:
1) read the kaiser wiki
2) read the kaiser wiki's section on rom upgrading and flashing
3) read about Hardspl ... make sure you get this before you fflash any roms to your device.
4) research and understand what flashing is and what happens to your phone when you flash.
5) download the rom and flash to your phone after establishing pc connection.
Oh and since you asked such a redundant question i am sure a mod will close this thread ... considering you didn't bother reading the below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=397434
or this:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser#ROMx20.Upgrading
or this:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Kaiser#Tools
read them before you mess up your device

On the contrary. Dutty just released a ROM a few days ago, and has promised V2 of that ROM soon.

I feel a 'brick' coming over the hill
Thanks for your advice guys, i'm totally new to this just didn't know where to start...So i'll take your advice and disgest all the information i can in the next couple of weeks to get a better understanding - before i do anything to my device. I'm sorry that my post sounded so lame, i just needed telling straight as i wasn't confident of what i was doing to be honest...
Thanks for you time in replying...
Hi guys,
So I downloaded 2 Roms of 6.1 found in this forum (the one from Dr Martin and the one from fireburned)
Now before flashing I have a question about the USPL.
I bought my phone factory unlocked. Do I still need to run that procedure before changing the rom?
Secondly, how do I backup my current ROM? (in case of it going bad)?
Thanks
mystical thing called search function
my recommendation, YES! but if you had used the search, you would had found out the answer yourself.... well, we all where new to this too, but a little bit of interest on the matter is really helpfull if you want to learn about it. asking "already-hunderts-of-time-anwsered" questions is just too lazy.
sorry, if i'm a little rude at you, but in the last time such question where asked just too much... folks, this is a forum, not a hotline!!
for your second question, do a search, and you'll found out why you don't need to backup the rom. if you still want to backup after this, if think, you'll find the answer on how to do it in the wiki...
If there is a SHIP ROM for your carrier, no real reason to backup since you can revert to this.
You will most likely need to use uSPL to temporarily SuperCID your device to allow it to flash any ROM as they are CID-locked. Unlocked simply means it does not have a network/SP lock on it.

I understand, but if it's something that comes up often, maybe the mods should make a static post about it? Thats usually to avoid ppl asking the same questions all the time..
Thanks for your input though
good point about the sticky. or we could add it to the wiki, i'll see what i can do in the next few days, but anyone is invited to contribute too (now i'm gettin' lazy, hihi)

Same situation here and I had to run the USPL proc to get the new ROM onto my device.
Thanks for all the input
I actually followed Dr Matin Gonzo's guide to update to his rom and it worked perfectly,
I even got to backup my old rom (using the wiki + the SDA Unlock tool)

I don't mind helping you, let me know what you need!
I've been using various Cyanogen and Hero ROMs since June and have now reverted back to the stock Vodafone UK ROM. In general the stock stuff is fine, it's quick and bluetooth audio works for phone and media. I need root access though to use Bluex for bluetooth file send/receive and pushing the HTC_IME keyboard
What I'd like to know is does anyone know how to root the new Donut release?
I've tried the Haykuro's rootmesigned but get a FC and constant reboot...it was worth a try
there is already a full solution for you.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=565929
I used it on mine and works perfectly, no flaws. Install that and you are done.
yeah there is a way. but im not going to answer because this is in the wrong section. read the stickies up top, search around, then post in the right section and maybe you will get more answers.

Aw gee thanks...NOT
If you don't have anything contructive to add then don't.
I spent hours searching and read through countless threads. For your info I have been installing ROMS since they came out in May (before the Wiki was in place), have contributed and would you believe it I have even been thanked for my help, I am comfortable with using ADB, Fastboot etc, am familiar with linux and have read the stickies.
Is asking about a rooted ROM not developement? Have YOU read the stickies because from what I have read, surprise surprise, in this section there is a sticky up above here about hacking and rooting. As far as I'm aware any developement focused questions would be posted in the developement section not general.
If I'm wrong them I'm quite happy to follow the MODS rules and their directions.
Are you going to repeat your post with questions about OTA updates being in the wrong section too?
P.S. the very helpful 'htcmagic' had already spoiled it for you
@BigRD: no problem mate, glad i could help. I installed the rom above and i am extremely happy with it. I have also installed busybox on it too.
Its much faster that vodafones original.
Hey mate, try Amon_Ra's Donut Rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538645
Very fast and stable with Root and others. I'm using it on my vodafone magic. Works really nice.
Or alternatively just go back to Cyanogen. Its Donut and it has more features than any other rom on this site so...its all up to you
@widezu69 & @htcmagic Cool, thanks guys.
I spent a lot of time with Cyanogen's ROMs up until the Google thing happened and was running eViL's Hero ROMs up to v3.0. I wanted to get back to a smoothish stock ROM issued by my network supplier but rooted by one of the great developers on XDA. I keep finding that other than the Vodafone original and the Google ION ROM bluetooth audio for phone and multi media working at the same time is very hit or miss. Am going to give both versions posted here a try over the next few days
Another one who wants a Rooted Vodafone Donut
I am also searching for a method to root a stock Vodafone Magic 32B that has had an OTA Donut update.
The answers on the thread so far involve flashing a new Donut Rom - my issue is that I have Donut already, and have never rooted - I am assuming the Root instructions included in the Wiki and Relentless Rooter are only aimed at Cupcake.....or am I wrong?
Any help/advice appreciated....
rooting the magic 1.6
Hi folks, dito as above. I've been up half the night trying to work this out. Have recently bought an htc magic from vodafone, and been 'updated' to doughnut 1.6. Not bad, but I'm really keen to get root on this, and eventually install the latest rom from cyanogen...
Seems there are now a few issues for people like me wanting to root their handsets... so far I've managed to erase my user settings, but keep getting errors trying to flash a rom. Followed the link above to nk02's thread, and no luck. Same issue, update aborts. There must be an easier way...
nk02 says his ROM works with 'wipe + flash'. How the heck do I do that? Seems this latest update to 1.6 has made all the other methods of gaining root obsolete... I'm far from a linux novice, and would love some advice here. And please don't tell me to keep searching, solid help would be appreciated. Cheers.
Hi Guys,
I just bought an Inspire off of Craigslist. The guys said he had updated or OTAed the phone. I wanted to know which root method or guide should I use for root, s-off, and even sim-unlock, if possible?
Here's the info on it:
Android Version: 2.3.3
HTC Sense Version: 2.1
Build Number: 2.47.502.7 CL93396 release-keys
Software Number: 2.47.502.7
What is the best, easiest method to get this bad boy rooted ? Thanks for your help!
I used the Ace Hack Kit and was rooted in under 15 minutes. Just make sure to read and follow the directions.

There's only one, and this thread was totally unnecessary the root method is on the first page

Hack Kit Thread - this is the only option available to root the GB OTA update
Make sure you read the effen manual, a few times. attn1 has made the process almost idiot proof, but if you run into issues you can hop in their IRC from the link in the OP of that thread
Folks, thanks for your responses, I appreciate your help.
I am not new to Android, been a proud owner of the DInc, EVO 4G, HD2 w/ Android on NAND, EVO 3D, and now the Inspire 4G. In all of those other communities and rooting methods, apparently builds and versions of Android mattered, and appropriate tools remedied the appropriate versions, thus I asked.
So please, there is no need to be upset. I didn't ask HOW TO Root, I asked what solution to use, cause apparently in the stickies, I saw two.
Thanks for the warm welcome, please look forward to more questions and thanks for supporting the community!

Welcome and I hope you enjoy your stay. The Inspire is a great device, I'm sure you'll love it as much as we do.
FWIW, I too get sick of the snarky, self righteous responses ppl make to a question.
