messaging app - Hero CDMA Themes and Apps

ok i been using the basic txt/pic messaging app installed on the phone but it seems as if i dont get all my txts or pik messages. Even if i do get pic mail i might not be able to open/download it. so do i need another messaging app if so what do you rec????

Chompsms and Handcent seem to be the most popular third party messaging apps. Be sure to disable the notifications on the stock messaging app if you decide to go with a third party app.

I use Handcent and receive all texts and mms.

Chompsms n handcent r both great apps.
Sounds like ur havin an mms problem.where the download button will appear n it wont let u download the pics....if so,u gotta do the sprint ruu....try these apps first though......im assuming thats the problem,i was havin this issue a few weeks ago, where it wouldnt let me open/downoad the pics.....

I'm having this same issue with gbhil's Donut rom. I get a gray "Downloading" message on the one picture message I've actually received since I switched. Other messages that I know have been sent either aren't coming in at all or aren't being recognized by the stock Messaging app.
johndoehizzle, can you go into more detail about "u gotta do the sprint ruu"?

I thought Donut ROMs didnt have MMS.

This would certainly explain the confusion, but it goes against several of the posts I've read that say that some have MMS working... while others, like myself, are left without it.

So its pretty much like the SMS issue, some got it, some dont. I feel you though, I got the SMS issue when using Donut, sucks.

yeah man,i had this happen once n the sprint people didnt know or couldnt fix it..this other time,it was kind of happening again, but it fixed itself...not sure,im thinking its like a sprint network "fart" or somethin lol....
download the sprint RUU here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=608434
this thing basicly wipes EVERYTHING off your phone, leaving it like brand new, like the first time you power it on when u take it out the box.make sure to backup/sync your contacts top your google account....this will erase all your downloaded app's....it sucks doin this, but it fixes that mms issue.....you just have to re-root your phone and install a rom again...you can try to make a backup of your current rom that you have and restore it.that could work.i didnt wanna do this cause i was afraid that the backup was bad and i was gonna have to deal with the same mms thing and have to do the sprint ruu..hopefully i made helped/ made sense.lol...

[Q] SMS Issues

I have recently got the X10i after yrs of a N95 ( sorry ), am doing my best to like the phone and am giving it every chance. I have lurked on this site and last week I rooted the phone and made it more personnal for me, thanks to the developers and those who provide the info for rooting.
I quickly removed the moxier stuff and also the messaging app but I am having issues with handcent sms, I wanted it for group/bulk texting tbh but it seems I have to restart the phone to get it to send a text to a group which has got 18 recipients.
Once the phone has started up I can send a group text no probs but the second group text will send to 1 or 2 of my contacts but the rest then fail, so I then restart the phone and resend the text and they get delivered, I have tried chompsms, grouptext and groupui, but each one gives me the same problem.
Has anybody got any ideas or another app I could try to resolve this issue ?
maybe it could be that the sms apps you use need (or work thanks) the main messaging app which were installed on the phone, the one you uninstalled.

I dont think it is that to be honest, I think it is more to do with the amount of contacts in the list, so I am hopeful that somebody confirms this and also gives me a better option.

Actually this could be true, as you should not remove core system applications, such as messaging.
so, you can try resetting your phone using Update Service software on your pc. I tried searching for an SMS app in my mobile folder to share with you, but there are several files that may be connected togheter, about messaging, and I am not able to choose the right one (or ones) to share.

Have Handcent can I delete stock Messaging App [Root]

My evo is rooted and with the app Root Explorer I can go and and delete any app on my phone. Since I have Handcent can I delete the stock messaging app and not have any issues? Or does Handcent rely on the stock app to function correctly?
Sorry if this has been asked but searching here turned up nothing

Handcent as well as any other 3rd party messaging app relies on the stock messaging app to function correctly. If you remove the stock app you won't get any messages anymore.

I know HTC made some heavy modifications, but if they didn't block the SmsManager.class in android.telephony then Handcent should work fine without the stock messaging app.
I've removed the sms app from my Droid once HandCent was installed and it works beautifully.
Can't hurt to try, copy the files somewhere safe, though, just in case.

I suggest you double check your method of testing, without the stock messaging app, Handcent can not send or receive MMS. It'll do SMS just fine, but no picture, video or audio.
To the OP, if you don't use MMS, then by all means go ahead an uninstall the stock messaging app; but if you still want the ability to send and receive any type of multimedia messages, then leave it be.

Dang I use MMS SO guess I cant. Thanks everyone
Thanks guys, I needed this answer as I thought things were working well with the stock messaging app deleted..that was until I couldn't download mms. Everything running smoothly again.
Handcent does have the capability to send and receive sms and mms. I had partly helped test a few builds during a trouble shooting. But it isn't 100% it seems to work at first then stop. There is an option for it much like gosms in the settings. Btw, I have the stock app frozen and I get sms/mms just fine
Shifted from Outer Space
Every time I have ever deleted the stock mms.apk then moms stops working on Handcent. But every phone is a little different. Back up the apk and remove it and if it gives ya trouble restore the backup.
I've never had a problem sending/receiving MMS with Handcent as my main/deleting MMS.apk. This is over a few different phones--Droid 1, EVO 4G, LG G2X, and my current SGSII (Tmo)
rather then delete just freeze. I use gosms and it's equipped with an option to be used if stock app is disabled or removed. I set that then freeze the stock app. works fine for me

[Resolved] Handcent or GO SMS?

Which one is better for u guys?
Right now I have handcent but want to kno what others think bout GO SMS.
Thank you in advance.
Sent from my G2
i use Go SMS. i have used handcent as well, except there are some annoyances i have with it. handcent seems to lag my phone more and isn't as smooth. also, when you have the pop up option on in handcent, the pop up comes up and there's a stretched background that you can't seem to change, maybe thats just me. its always that venice street looking default background. honestly try both, i reverted back to go sms. actually go sms runs in apps with only 44.0KB compared to handcent's 2.09 on mine
Go is much smoother on my phone also. Definately my fav.
Go sms it is.
Sent from my G2
Go SMS. Much smaller and smoother than Handcent.
I am trying GO SMS for the first time, I am a long time handcent user (since I bought my moment and hated its SMS app a few years back).
Anyway, just installed. First impression is it is quick. Feels lots faster than handcent on my epic (midnight 2.9 rom + ext4).
Only issue I have is, it doesn't show all the contact pictures. They come from facebook linking. Handcent displayed them with no issues. Guess it isn't a deal breaker. Just would be nice, now that I have become used to them being there.
B+
Been using the GO SMS n it just feels cleaner to me.
Sent from my G2
GO SMS!
IT's much faster on my HDH & I much prefer the GUI.
Try them both and see for yourself.
I vote GO though!
Go sms is faster than Hancent ..

What app do you use to see how many KBs it uses while running?
Has anyone had issues with not receiving MMS from others using GO SMS? My cousin uses GO but when he sends me pics/videos/music, I never get it. When he sends via Handcent they go through just fine.

I get the sme problem with mms.
I get mms through stock msg fine.

Handcent sms
After testing both, definately using Gosms
GO SMS for me too
i've recently had a bug with gosms but i do like it better
I've been a Handcent user for a long time, but it has been a lot of delay to open D:
Now i'm using and it is very smooth and light. Unfortunately, it doesn't show my contacts pictures and in Handcent show up, no issues.
Someone has this issue or it is really a Go SMS problem?
Thanks!
Handscent. Like the ability to change themes, full customization.
my GoSMS shows the contact pictures from my google contacts just fine. add a pic to contact using gmail contacts on a computer. then allow the phone to sync. send that person a txt to see if it shows the picture. i also have sim contacts disabled, and no facebook stuff going on. hope that helps
handcent is like bloatware. I went with 1 year for it before I found Go. WAY BETTER. GoSMS all the way.
used handcent for a while, now i m playing with gosms... smoother, some fine animation and a lot more reliable through some advanced settings so GOSMS, does the trick
Go SMS for me. I tried handscent and was annoyed by the ads when you have an internet connection. Another is Go SMS's interface is much cleaner than handscent.

[Q] Hangouts and IPhone

Does anyone know how to disable SMS from going to the Hangout app on an IPhone? Since I have an Nexus 5 now and all SMS,MMS go through Hangouts. When I send a text to my wife they go to her Hangout app instead of her default messaging.. She doesnt want them to the Hangout app she wants them to go to here regular messaging app like it did on my SGSIII. We have Hangouts so we can be able to video chat when Im at work.

Can't you just use another app for your texting? Handcent is nice. You can probably even find the ole standard Messages app easy enough.

its strange that this issue would even exist. if i use hangouts to message my wife, and she's using the stock android messenger, my texts don't go arrive via the hangouts app on her device. i dont know why it would be different on an iphone. i wonder if its a setting on your wife's iphone hangouts app. you check? the issue is definitely with the app/device on her end. i'll do some looking around.

My best guess is that this has something to do with iMessaging. But I don't know what or how, if so.

agreed. i kow nothing about apple stuff except that when my wife finally switched from apple devices, it was a total pain in the ass. her phone, even with the sim card out, would intercept her text messages. this prevented her from getting any texts on her android. had to straighten that out. what a joke.
there must be something in her system settings, imessage settings or hangouts, etc. i'd start looking there.
I fixed the problem, I need to text to her number not her email. Email is for hangouts, number is for standard texting on IPhone. Thanks for the help guys.

Hangouts Group messages not sending

Anyone having issues with this? The verizon messaging app works great. except for the fact that if I want to share something I can't load up a current group chat like I can in Hangouts. and the app randomly shows a notification count on the lock screen that isn't accurate...
I didn't have these issues on my M7... I don't like the stock messaging app because its horrible with group MMS along with the fact that I haven't found another messaging app like Hangouts that lets you choose a current conversation when you click "share" on a picture or something. All the others make you type in the recipients, and going back to typing in 3-4 people every time I want to send something to the group isn't really a thing I want to do again....
I've read APN changes may help but I haven't been able to get any to actually stick around on the M8. open to ideas... kind of frustrating.

I think they're going to have to update the app for MMS to work properly. The same thing happened with the M7 when Hangouts originally launched.
