Rooting an Optus 1.6 Dream's SPL - G1 Android Development

So, when I got my Dream, I instantly wanted to root it. I did so using with a little deal of difficulty using the goldcard method. It was fine, put ROM's on and everything..
Anyways, it stopped charging, sent it to Optus. They had it for almost a month. When i got it back, it had been unrooted and put back on factory Donut firmware.
Now, im attempting to root it using the same method.
I have a different SD card than when I first rooted it, so naturally, I generated a goldcard for the new SD card. Put the DREAIMG.nbh file on, and tried to downgrade.
And for some reason, I keep getting the 'not allow' error on the 'rainbow screen'..
I've been told it MAY be a 'perfect SPL'.. idk if thats bs or a possibility, but any help would be greatly appreciated=]

Problem with downgrading

Hi all
First off Ive read every single thread about downgrading so far
I have tried nearly everything to downgrade
but it keeps saying
No Signature
Verification Failed
I think it has something to do with me installing the RC33 upgrade a while ago
when the new update came out I downloaded the RC33 update from some forum and installed it
now I have no Idea on how to update it to a JFv1.41-RC33 update so I can downgrade it with the DREAIMG.nbh
Any Help would be appreciated!
I know I have to run the DREAIMG.nbh in SPL mode Camera + Power button I Did this but then I get not allowed error and it goes back to the SPL mode and wont install the DREAIMG.nbh
Thins I tried to fix this:
Factory Reset
Hard Wipe
Thanks in advance,
Bump anyone I really want to fix this.
"goldcard" "qmat" maybe that could help?
daft question... but
do you have DREAIMG.nbh on the 'root' of your sdcard?
if not then put it on the root
if it is on the 'root' you could try downloading a fresh copy
Hmm How Do I put it in the root??
I just connected my phone trough USB formatted it fat32 ( 8 GB SD )
and then I just copied it to my SD Card is there any other way on how I Should put this on the Root of my SD?
Thanks for the quick reply's
Anyone?
And what does qmat actually do?
Ive been trying to fix it now for a few days tried so many things but nothing worked so far.
Anyone?
So, you currently have RC33 installed, right? I would redownload the DREAIMG.nbh file. Make sure its the RC29 version and not the RC7 version.
I Did that even tried it on my friends PC last night redownloaded the RC29 and reformatted my SD Card
But the DREAIMG.nbh still says not allowed.
Does it have to be formatted in a Cardreader? cuz what ive done so far is connected my phone trough usb and formatted it while it was in the phone.
If you don't have a clue what qmat is, than you did not read the complete manual.
Qmat is essential in this downgrade-proces.
Greets,
JP
I know what Qmat is I read about it I wanna know if it is really neccesairy since I do not have any windows mobile based phones.
yes it is.
Ok is there a way to do it without a windows mobile device or linux?
Have the same problem now
Any help is appreciated

The above is probably just badly phrased, but you do have to downgrade your stock RC33 firmware to the stock RC29 firmware BEFORE you can upgrade to JF1.41 or whatever.
Are you following the instructions on this page exactly?

Whenever I was having trouble with rooting, it turned out I wasn't following the directions.

***{Solved!!!!}*** Bootloader locked to RC30 and above?

I decided to try and root my stock G1 this morning. The bootloader does not allow me to flash down to RC29. It gives the "Update Terminate" after it fully flashes it, but before it checks the flash. Then it only loads into the bootloader and stops.
However i just successfully flashed to RC30. None of the guides on here specify that I had to load another spl or bootloader first.... Am I missing something?? Thanks for your help.
Bootloader:
DREA100 PVT 32B RUUNBH
HBOOT-0.95.0000
CPLD-4
RADIO-1.22.12.29
SEP 2 2008
Solved!!!: Apparently I was on the right track. My US T-Mobile G1 was locked somehow to only accept only RC30 and above. I made a goldcard for my SD card and the image no longer failed (same sd, same image file) at the flashing the .nbh. If anyone has been having issues flashing a US G1... try a goldcard... It instantly fixed the problem! I guess its not only for German and UK?!
BTW.. thanks to pk at codeandroid.org for his guide to make the goldcard without a WM device or linux... http://www.codeandroid.org/forum/?wpforumaction=viewtopic&t=9.2 (in broken english... lol)
Thanks to Viper and revskills.de for their work on goldcard images
Thanks to JesusFreke for this bada$$ ROM (1.5)
Thanks to Haykuro for his android 101 guide.
Great work everyone really...
you need to make sure that your sd card is formatted fat32 and checksum on the DREAIMG.NBH
then try again. should work.
thanks for replying did that. The md5 checksum matched perfectly I have 3 different sd cards all formatted in fat32 only. still no go. I have tried 3 different links to the dreaimg.nbh. made sure it was in all caps and everything. nothing.
It will find the file.
It will flash the file to 100%.
When it would normally check the integrity of each portion it says...
"dreaimg.nbh - FAIL"
"Update Terminate"
"Update FAIL".
The odd part is it will flash the RC30 nbh just fine... same sdcard, same instructions.
try a different sd card- my stock one didnt flash either, same error over and over.
use this nbh -

tried all 3 cards with your file. same thing. Why will it so willingly let me flash rc30 the exact same way?
you got me.....
this was the confusing part. so im sitting on rc 30 right now for the 5th time. i have had 30 or so unsuccessful flashes of RC29 and EVERY flash of RC30 was successsful... this is my barrier to Haykuros and/or JF roms...
The file names are case sensitive. It must be DREAIMG.nbh . All caps for the prefix, no caps in the suffix.
thanks for your response... i tried both ways. most of my 30 attempts was changing caps... no caps... on file name and extension. reformatting... downloading from new sources... clearing my temp folder so windows wasn't transferring the same file every time since they are names the same (trust me windows does that with same named and same sized files...)
The only thing I can come up with is a modded bootloader. My G1 is not the one i had from launch date... so this phone never had any lower than RC33 (got the phone 5 weeks ago, came pre-loaded with RC33). This maybe one of T-Mo's tactics in the "War on Root".
That may not be the issye... I had RC30 when I bought the phone. I was able to get to RC29 with no issues... I don't think tmobile did anything to the phone.
i wish it wasnt but how can this phone reject rc29 but accept rc30. does anyone have a rc28, rc19, or below .nbh?
Can you try flashing the engineering Bootloader or HARDSPL first, then fastboot?
I'm not sure if you can use those without having root first though.

no i cant. from what i've seen the first step to installing any bootloader is accessing SU... which is root... which means i'm shot down again... getting depressed.
Has anyone tried loading HardSPL without root?

You are right, you need root to be able to load a different boot loader. I got a replacement sent to me from T-Mobile with RC33 on it maybe 3 weeks ago and i had no problems with obtaining root. If i were you i would call up T-Mobile and tell them the Menu button is not working every time on your replacement. They may send you an express replacement...
makes me wish i had kept my launch phone... I got it with RC17 or 18... but i remember getting rc19 ota... this sucks. The only reason i traded it in is because GPS wouldnt ssync anymore unless i did a wipe... so i knew it was a software problem... if i had just rooted it I bet i wouldnt be in this crap. i couldbe on haykuros... right now...
Sounds like a hardware issue to me. The data from the SD card isn't being written to flash properly so the SPL can't verify it. I would try calling T-Mobile to see if they can send you another unit. Obviously don't tell them you tried to flash an unsupported ROM, just make up a story and they will likely believe it.
Just to exclude the obvious. Shouldn't the file be called DREAMIMG.nbh not DREAIMG.nbh as you've written.. Or is that just a typo in your posts?

The correct image name is DREAIMG.nbh. looks wrong but its right... I think it IS a hardware issue. The is writing but not verifying certain images... and its now giving me checksum errors on rc30 after 8 successful loads, but when i retried without doing anything to the file it completed. I would say its my card but I have 3 different cards...
bump for anyone else having trouble...

switch 1 touch root to gold card method

ok i have my mem card with my cyan's update, compatible themes and so on... however when i was showing a friend what i did he clicked nandroid backup on my phone so it replaced my original rom.
i wanted to go through regular rooting method just for the heck of it cuz i have some extra mem cards to play with and figured i can just run nandroid backup to have the cyan and one touch method phone from one memory card, then wipe and use my other roms with whatever else on on the other memory cards to switch to anything at anytime and have access to the stuff i dont have being stuck with cyan and the 1 touch method.
My problem--- on step 3 when im using sappimg.zip to flash it says Model ID incorrect! Update Fail!
i followed the instructions to a T but im thinking this may have to do with the fact that my mt3g is already rooted.... should i go back and make the goldcard again or is my problem as i suspect.... and is their a resolution????
Thanks for your help.
your gold card isnt working if it says model id incorrect. that is the precise purpose of the gold card.
if you already flashed a rooted rom you dont need to use the gold card method.
you just need to use the flash recovery program to get your modded recovery image, and from there instead of updating a rom, you need to update the SPL to one of the engineering ones found on Amon_ra's thread called Magic HBoot
good luck
Wow, thanks for the quick response. That makes perfect sense I guess I was just worrying myself. Thanks again
One-click FTW!
The one-click method is far superior and more efficient. I've used that even still for 3 of my Android devices. Otherwise, my original G1 was rooted via "old school" tactics. Downgrade, UPGRADE, downgrade, etc.

Unrooting MyTouch 1.2 FINALLY!

Rooting my 1.2 was easy... unrooting has been a nightmare, until now.
Once the sappimg files for both the fender and 1.2 were found I thought i would easily just power into hboot and rename to sappimg.zip blah blah blah etc. Well for some reason, i was getting the main version is older error.... as if I had created my gold card wrong. Gold card or regular SD card, it just was not working.
Afraid to change my SPL and try again, I decided to use my goldcard to revert back to the original 1.5 sappimg we all used to originally root our devices. Booted, got the dead touch screen and finally powered off. I was finally able to boot into hboot and install the tmobile sappimg for 1.2. Voila!
Anyways, this method should work for all, not just some. I will probably go back to root so i can keep playing around with the slide rom, but I'm happy to know I can revert without hitch if I decide to get the 2.1 OTA update whenever that happens.

good to hear you got it to work... sorry i couldnt be much help myself since i havent attempted to unroot.. but if you wanted to unroot because you where worried you wouldnt get t mobiles ota update to 2.1.. it wasnt necessary to unroot, all you had to do is flash the stock fender rom with root and you will get the update...

Help me with my wife's paperweight.

Ok So I have an issue with my wife's inspire. I never bothered to root/rom it because she isn't techy like me. Lately though she's noticed mines so much faster... Naturally she wanted me to "do that nerd stuff" to hers too.
Unfortunately a lot has changed since I ran mine (like 9versions of Ace hack kit). Ace Hack kit wouldn't progress into step 2 (i press 2 and enter over...and over.. with no result) so I ran the one click. Unfortunately when it got to the 2nd PD98IMG it failed on System with a "FAIL-UZ" error. Now it will not boot, I CAN get it to HBOOT but no matter what SD card I use (I tried the one out of mine) when I try to load any other PD98IMG it consistently said "FAIL-UZ"
OK well for some reason I just got it to work again... NEVER mind my issue. I don't know what caused the issue, but I solved it by copying the PD98 onto my phone's SD card, put the SD card in wife's phone, and ran HBOOT again. it ran fine!
*EDIT*... ok so not quite fine. the PD98IMG file installed properly, but now i'm stuck on the white HTC screen...nothing doing past that... any help?
Bet she's pissed that she doesn't have a phone

I am assuming you made the Gold Card and are using that card to root?
Other than that are you making sure to clear Delvik and wipe first?
Pull up the root thread and follow the Utoob vid. It is step by step awesome.
One click just down graded my phone. Would not go any further after that.
The hack kit was used to finally enable how I have in my signature after the one click failed.
Hopefully you can figure out how to get it going again because you might end up sleeping on the couch mate. Hahaha

Seems to me you still need to push the downgraded Rom and radio, you can do it through hboot. If you get the white HTC screen then you need to try it again. After you do that it should boot up with no sound. Then you can try running the hack kit. After the downgrade step. If your looking for a earlier version of the hack kit there is one in the guide that is sticking at the top of this section.

i got a question does ur wifes phone still have manufactures warrenty? not to worry about the root or s-off AT&T at this point does not have a policy against rooting just dont tell them.. HTC just flashes the device after they validate the LDI and Phisical dam....I have returned many rooted phones with know worry
there's some instuction on how to get away from the white screen o' death, but i don't know everything worked for me.
sorry about it! i know how stressful that can be! i hope you make it thru!
i have heard some say if you can hboot you can make it so.. stick with it
go with the hack kit next time .. it will work
Have you tried pulling out the battery and then putting it back in, then trying again. Also reformat her sd card.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA Premium App.
I world format her SD card in ur phone. Pop it back in hers and start the hack kit process over again. The new kit is super easy it you read the help file a few times and really follow it. I beloved you will have to boot into hboot and factory reset you phone and go from there. Also check out the irc channel I bet a few guys in there might have some ideas aswell.
