Resco AudioRecorder and Vito Audio Notes will do what you want to do, if your device supports the feature.
On my HTC Wizard the only way to record both sides of the conversation is to turn the speaker-phone on.
The Vito programmers have included a function in Audio Notes that turns on the speaker-phone automatically when you answer a call. I would assume that they did this because they found no other way around the problem on some devices.

OMG use search ffs theres a thread as long as your arm (perhaps even longer) where the slickest programmers in the know from XDA dev try everything (and i mean everything) to get this to work then outline the reasons why it wont.

hey buddy, thank u so much for lettin' me know about Vito Audio Notes, it works perfectly fine with my phone, though it needs the speakerphone to be on, while recording. But Something is always better than Nothing. I can compromise on that. And unlike Nokia, there are no more continuous annoyin' beeps at the background, while recording. Thanks again, mate.

Record calls with Wizard without speaker phone
I can record calls getting both sides of the conversation without having to be in speaker phone mode. using my Wizard. Button 4, just hold it down and it will record as long as you hold the button down. I have that button (4) assigned to Record.

Button? what button? Do you mean function + 4 on the keyboard? Or the touchscreen "4" button?

Do you have a link for the voice recorder app (in .cab form) that comes with the phone.. the one that starts recording when you hold down Button 4. I installed a custom ROM that didn't come with this app.

WM Sound Recorder
I use WM Sound Recorder to record my HTC Touch Pro phone conversation. It could record outgoing and incoming calls automatically. maybe you could have atry.
In short
Call recording and answering machine softwares are available , but needs speaker phone to be on.
This is hardware limitation with HTC but works with some other windows mobile devices like O2.
If works with HTC please let us all know.
Recording for mobile phone users
While this thread is old, a Google search for the topic finds it, so I'll comment. I've always found a voice recorder useful, for general non-phone, landline, and mobile phone use (particularly for recording otherwise undocumented customer (dis)services promises). A Nokia 9500 phone with Psiloc Extended Recorder software gave me most of what I wanted when out and about, but landline recording was problematical. Windows Mobile is more difficult.
But I've found a solution which is pretty much perfect for me. It sounds theoretically awful, like recording music with a microphone in front of the radio, but works extremely well, with both sides of the conversation recording at similar sound levels and without extraneous noise. After buying a "cheap" Chinese recorder which plugged into the landline connection, that ticked the right boxes and worked as specified, but didn't do the job well in practice, I got the right equipment: a tiny voice recorder (95x37x10mm, 47g) and a microphone that sits in your ear, underneath the phone speaker or a hands-free (but not in-ear) headset. Olympus does lots of suitable recorders; I found the WS-210S 2nd-hand & cheap. The unique bit is the Olympus telephone pickup TP-7. It will record with the pickup from any phone you use (eg payphone), and of course from its microphone. The lowest-quality audio (138 hours in 512k! - don't go overboard for massive memory) is 100% fine for understandable speech, voice-activated recording, and low microphone sensitivity for phone or close dictation, high for general conversation. Makes small (60kB/min) time-stamped WMA recordings with useless file names which I move and rename ASAP to a computer into which I have USB-plugged the recorder.
This is so much more versatile than mobile-only software, for about 37 GBP (but no need to buy new version when I change phone) and a small gadget and cable to carry, that I have happily given up the complications of software. I use the mobile phone (and other people's phones) without a headset, and the landline with a Plantronics over-ear headset.

PS problems with Chinese voice recorder: needed fiddly settings every time used, didn't start in right mode; voice-activated recording didn't work with compression, and uncompressed file was huge .WAV; compressed file format was non-standard .ACT - could play only with Windows software supplied, but no editing to trim silences; no timestamp.
Since there are recent comments on this thread....
Thus typing-in....ACR call recorded has worked for me without the speaker mode also..

I am trying to get VOIP to work on my Fuze, and it has just been one problem after another. But my main problem is that it seems to be flaky I think it disconnect from the VOIP but still said it is connected. So i can call out and it reconnects and it all works. But no one can call in and i haft to go in to the phone settings and then internet turn it to off then back on again to whenever avalible, then they can call in for awile untell it disconnect again.
When i reset my divice sometimes is comes back on as connected and other times it come back on disconnected and i haft to go back to the phone setting and turn VOIP off and on again.
Is this a problem for everyone, or just me?

So do you have any suggestions, if it is a bad connection. So it will automatically log back in what the connection is available again.
I am using Internet Calling 21109 to hack it. and then using a program call Sip conf tool to setup my VOIP settings. Is this the best way to do this or do you suggest something better?

I'm having the same issue you are (I'm using wifi). I'm playing around with some registry settings trying to fix it - will let you know if I find something that helps.
I'm also using the same tools to set it up as you are - and those are indeed the best ones.
Good to know am not alone with this problem. Hopefully we can find a solution.

Who is your service provider? Are you on ATT? And if you are on ATT, which ROM are you using?
VOIP on Windows Mobile
I have struggled for two years trying to do this, with countless releases. I eventually just bought a second wireless voip phone that works great, and was inexpensive. Not a great solution. I can get it to work, however the call quality is terrible, and the client is flaky as can be. I also dont like the way the dialer makes you select voip or provider and then stays on it. I have tried a few third party software apps such as fring, and Xbeam, and these worked a whole lot better. In addition, most voip clients are speaker only. You can use a bluetooth headset, and that helps alot. I guess what I am trying to say is that unless you love endlessly searching for a solution, or are hell bent on getting this working, I would save your time and work on something else. PM me and I can send you the info on the phone that I got.

the problem with VoIP is that Voice travels over IP networks in packets in the same manner as data, so when you talk over an IP network your conversation is broken up into small packets. These voice and data packets travel over the same network with a fixed bandwidth. So its unreliable and doesn't provide a mechanism to ensure data packets are delivered in sequential orderhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VoIP#Challenges
wish i had real info for you, i was listening to an Adam Corrolla podcast and he was going off about VoIP.. If you were fortunate enough to be connected to a DS1 line aka T1 line, you wouldn't experience the $hitty quality.. but they cost several hundred thousand..

I wouldn't mind going 3ed party,
I tried some a wile back but the problem i ran in to was that nothing else interfaced with them. Like in my contacts if i said call this person it would use the build in phone software not the VOIP software. I am not sure if there is a work around or not for that.

My fiancée and I got ourselves a pair of Nexus 5's a couple of weeks ago, switched from Verizon to the T-Mo $30 100/Unlimited/5GB(Unlimited) plan and are now happily saving over $100 a month in the process. Yay us!
However, I've been struggling with VOIP with varying degrees of success. I've spent a considerable amount of time researching and configuring and tweaking, and I'd like to share my findings, as well as get some feedback on some things I may have missed.
One of the first things I tried was the Google Voice/PBXes/CSipSimple method, which produced terrible call quality. Everything from echo to background noise. No matter what I did (and believe me, I tried everything I could find) the call quality was just terrible. Changing the mic source, enabling mode audio API, changing the SIP audio mode, changing codecs, nothing really helped. Battery life was great, but the call quality was pretty much unusable. I could hear myself echoing, the other party could hear their own voice echoing, and/or there'd be too much background noise, or I'd be too quiet, etc.
Next, I tried Talkatone (paid for premium). Connection problems galore! I'd have several "lag fests" over WiFi (never tried it on LTE) even when I was sitting right at the router. Everything would cut out for about 30-45 seconds and then resume as if nothing happened, and this occurred 2-3 times over the course of a 10-15 minute call. Yes, I ruled out a connection/router issue. Battery life was "OK" but it wasn't as good as it was with CSipSimple.
I then tried GrooveIP (paid). Lots of echo here. Again, no setting or combination of settings really seemed to get rid of it. Tried as I might, the echo was always there. Battery life was on par with Talkatone.
Next, I decided I'd go a different direction and tried Skype. The voice quality was much improved, with no echo, but complaints of background noise, especially while on speakerphone. This has been passable, though not "ideal" (I know, VOIP isn't perfect). The big issue with Skype has been the absurd battery drain. A 30 minute call drained my battery by almost 20% and Skype was topping the charts by a long shot on the battery usage.
I know there are other options out there such as Viber, but I've not seen a whole lot out of them in terms of reviews, etc. I may just end up trying Viber and seeing how it pans out, but the options are starting to run out.
I know part of the problem is the same one the Nexus 4 had with the microphone(s) but, I'd like to think I just might be overlooking something. If anyone feels they've "solved the problem" please share your settings, as I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels as though they're banging their head against a wall here.

Viber works well for me and I only hear a slight echo if I'm talking with Nexus 4 users. Give it a shot. Tango might be worth a try, too. Good luck.
Well, I believe Csipsimple is the best voip client available. So, you'll most likely want to go back to your first solution, but replace pbxes with Callcentric, voip.ms or another voip provider. I've tried everything you did as well (plus a few more options) and with the exception of Skype, found the quality to be unacceptable. What I'm suggesting won't be free, but the cost is extremely low. Actually, voip.ms could be a very good solution for you. You would establish and fund one "account", but set up separate "sub-accounts" for yourself and your fiance. If you wanted to use GV exclusively, you could then purchase a couple of DIDs and set up GV to forward to them. I use an app on my phone called Groove Forwarder that changes my GV forwarding settings based on my data connection. If I'm on LTE, etc..., it forwards to my T-Mobile number. When I'm connected to Wi-Fi though, it switches to my Flowroute (another voip provider) number. Also fwiw, you can use voip over LTE if you want. Being in a moving vehicle set up that way will cause issues however.

Yeah, I also tried the Callcentric+PBXes route for the iLBC codec, which didn't seem to help. I'm not entirely convinced it's the PBX provider that's at fault, as I don't have these weird audio issues with CSipSimple+PBXes/Callcentric on my "home phone" (separate Google Voice account) which is an old DROID Incredible 2. Voice quality there is fine.
I did look into voip.ms, but when I signed up (late at night), they forced a "manual authentication" on me (why, I don't know) and I needed to contact support. I tried logging in the following morning, only to be greeted with a message about my IP address not being whiteflagged and not being authorized to access the account. Being that my IP address is dynamic, I don't think I want to constantly fight that battle about "approving" my IP address whenever it changes.
Create a ticket with voip.ms support to inquire. I've only good things to say about their response times and help.
Does anyone have bluetooth headsets working with csipsimple? On my nexus 5 I've yet to find a sip phone that works correctly with a headset.

groove and google voice gave me no echo when calling a landline from my wifi connection. i think this has to be your internet access that would be messing this up. . .or maybe it's just bad for voip to voip calls
I can personally attest to voip.ms + csipsimple + g729 codec ($10 dollars in the playstore) reliability as a voip setup for my Nexus 5. My set up is basically that GV forwards to my voip.ms DID which rings directly to my Nexus 5's csipsimple app. In the event that im not registered in csipsimple (e.g. lose connection, servers go down, etc) I have failover set up w/ voip.ms to ring to my real tmobile phone number. I have zero issues with call quality or echo and I have had full conversations with people on the phone even while driving. I also used this guys tip when first setting up, these may or may not change a thing but Ive had my csipsimple configured with these settings since day 1 also.
1. Go to settings
2. Click the menu button -> Expert Mode
3. Go to “media” -> select echo mode and choose WebRTC (probably already chosen)
4. In “media” go to “Audio troubleshooting” -> “Mic source” -> Voice call
5. in “Audio troubleshooting” -> “Audio implementation” -> Java
I use flowroute + csimpsimple (G729). Call quality is excellent and low latency on WiFi and LTE, and not bad over HSPA/HSPA+.
My main issue at the moment is bluetooth. I cannot get it to work with the bluetooth in my car (only bluetooth I have). I can get incoming audio OK, but it appears to be using the phone microphone for outgoing audio instead of the car microphone and it's very garbled and noisy.
There was a software issue in 4.2 regarding inline mic gain, 4.2.2 fixed it. GroovIP free worked fine for me after the update. There is only a few months left of google voice as they are shutting it down on May 15, 2014.
I have been using Viber for over two years. Works perfectly fine. Try it.

I'm hoping somebody here can help, I haven't been able to find anything by searching here or through Google.
During phone calls the volume from the microphone fades in and out on the other persons phone. From what I've been told the longer I talk the lower the volume on their end. If I pause for a second or two, the volume goes back to normal then slowly starts to fade again. I have had this happen both on calls to other cell phones and to landline phones.
I have tried looking for in call settings on my phone but can't find them anywhere. If anybody has any ideas please chime in.
try using different SIM , the call quality depends on :
1) Sim you use
2) The signal percentage present at the time of call
i mostly presume these are the reasons which does such things in INDIA

I'm using the phone on Straight Talk in the U.S. and still haven't found a real solution. I did however find a work around. If I reboot the phone every morning it seems to help with the problem. A bit of a pain, but whatever works.

My gf's phone behaves in a really strange way...
During an audio call using common communicators, say skype, whatsapp, messenger, if a new incoming gsm/lte connection is coming, then it automatically takes priority over communicator call. Communicator call is put on hold.
What is most annoying, is that you are not able to inform the person on other side of the line that there is a new incoming connection - no, the second incoming connection is appearing on screen, current connection is put on hold. To clarify, user can chose whether to accept or cancel new incoming call, but the 'communicator' call is already on hold;(
I find this most annoying coming from iphone environment, where I have full control on all live and incoming connections and where no connection is prioritised. When im on a whatsapp audio call and a regular gsm connection is coming, I can let other person know that I have incoming connection and decide to answer, cancel or put current call on call. I find this rather normal behaviour. Unfortunately this is not the case on my gf's phone which drives me nuts
Please let me know if this is case of specific ROM, or android os in general? I hope you could guide me toward an easy solution, hopefully not requiring reinstalling new rom. Many thanks!
