[APP] NubDial - Smart Dialer for Android - Nexus One Themes and Apps

Hi all,
This project started out as my basic mod of SpellDial (by Lawrence Greenfield, thanks for making it open-source) initially, but I've since made quite a number of changes to it.
It is now able to search by both name and number, and you can always use the "#" key to denote a space. Most of the other changes I made are under the hood, but I've attached a few screenshots so you know what you're getting.
Lastly, there are a couple of bugs, among them I believe it only works properly with Nexus One. I've yet to finish up all the mdpi images, and I've also not updated the code for SDK3/4 and below (Cupcake, Donut).
Download: Search "NubDial" on the Android Market.
Source: http://code.google.com/p/nubdial/
Request/Help Needed:
I hope that this will become a community project (but I doubt I'll be able to do much since sch's getting really bz), and would appreciate if someone could come up with a nicer design that still fits the Android look . If you have, please post your mock-up or send them to me , actual 9-patch/images will be awesome.
Change Log:

Added patch by seidler2547 to support accented characters.
Added patch by qingcai to speed up performance (I changed the delay slightly).
Should not show up on Donut/Cupcake Markets anymore.

1.51:
Fixed hyphen bug again.
1.5:
Added "Add to contacts" to Menu options
Highlighting now works across dashes (Please report)

1.4:
Fixes a regression bug with name matching
*Should* fix hyphen bug
1.3:

Implement features to Donut/Cupcake (Low-priority)
Known Bugs:
Long pressing on menu for the soft keyboard messes up the layout. Any ideas?

Looks awesome!! Where's the download link? Thanks for your work

You're fast. I normally post once when there's a lot of stuff already before I edit it to add more . Link's up .

Haha I actually JUST happened to be checking the forums (which I don't check so often). Looking good and I just tested it out on the Market. Smooth so far, but after a call ends it unfortunately does not go back to the app, but instead it goes to the stock Dialer. I know that's probably difficult to intertwine and you're aware, but just thought I'd post about it!

a good start
Wysie,
I've been following your development of the contacts apk and now this t9 dialer is adds function not currently available on stock dialer. A good start.
Is there any way to merge this dialer into the stock nexus one phone app?
Jonathan

^^ yes this would be cool

Nice idea. I would like to see this tool rolled into your Wycontacts Eclair apk.
Some quick feedback - I am getting FC when searching for a number/contact that either begins with 2 (ABC) or 6 (MNO). This is repeatable and happens every time. I have rebooted and still get FC whenever the 2 or 6 are entered first. Searching with the other keys works as expected. Can I send you any log files that might help in remedying this? My sig has the ROM and kernel details for reference.

Thank-you
works just fine. It wod be cool the app open by dobbel tap on tracbal

Great work .... but can you do the following?
1) Change the icon to represent the standard Dialler Icon?
2) Have the option within the dialler to goto the other tabs, or better still implement this into the standard dialler?
Thanks for your work !

Hi guys, thanks for the support and comments.
Integrating into the system Contacts app is definitely possible, but I'm afraid I lack the time to do that. Moreover it's not high on my priority list.
I made the icon, so nope, not gonna change it . Sorry.
Check out my to do for what's coming next, as well as currently known bugs (would be good if someone can propose a fix).
That's all. Updated a new version to Market which fixes some minor bugs.

A new icon would be nice. Don't get me wrong, but the current one looks strange. You've made a great app, why spoil it with a fugly icon?
Anyway, it would be great if the app searched contact numbers with wildcards, i.e. if I have a number with an international code (+44xxxxxxxxx), I could search it without having to enter +44.

bro wonderful stuff!
feels good using sg products..
May I add in some suggestions to make it even better...
- Add Speeddial (long press a number to dial a assigned contact?)
- Give options to show default number only and hide the rest
- integrate with call log
if all these is made possible, I will uninstall acontacts and use yrs =)

request
Wysie. awesome work but i have one request. it seems it does not find any sequence of digits, it has to search from the begining of each number. when i remeber numbers i dont start with the area code first (as i assume many people dont) so this app would be perfect if it searched for the sequence in any part of the numbers. once again, beautiful app i would pay for it if it had this feature. (and maybe a nicer icon that matched the 2.1 stock ui a little better)
1951 360-5555
insead of
1951 360-5555
i feel like i made zero sense here i hope i got through. lol

To filter out country code at the start is something I want to do but have yet to think of...

Just uploaded 1.3 on the Market which has an option to allow searching from anywhere in the number . Does not filter by country code, it simply matches any subsequence of numbers.

Thanks for the updated version .... I'd love to see the contact photo built into the left of the name too .... just like it is all over the 2.1 phone app.

the prefix issue is how caller id matching works for incoming calls, only the last 6 or 7 digits of the number is searched for.
I am not sure you would want this on a dialer though? for example sometimes I cant remember a name but i can remember the town and therefore dialling code eg tradesmen in the town where my holiday home is so on my winmo phone i would type in just the dialing code to bring a list of contacts in that area.
Anyway I stopped putting in the international prefix on numbers now, the last few times i went abroad it seems that the networks are smart enough to know your roaming and where your have roamed from so no need of idd prefix when dialing back to your home country.

Sorry wysie but im with this guy, I would love to use this as my replacement default dialer but putting this on my homescreen makes it pretty ugly. Looks like a game of sudoku tbh lol trying atm to change the icon with bettercut but having problems.

very nice update, I just wanted to login here to the forum to suggest to you that it searches anywhere in the number
Thank you very much.
Another suggestion: Is it possible to integrate contact picture ? That would be superb
Thanks again for all your work.

Bug report x2:
My Nexus One uses US locale I think but all my numbers are saved as +4670155778 etc. So when the first hyphen appears it'll throw the search off as it appear to search with the added hyphen.
Also, when having language code in numbers (as all my numbers have) you remove the leading zero: +4670155778 is actually 070155778. Please have it match a search for 070155778 as 70155778 to fix this.

[APP] Mms.apk Mod [30-03-10]

Recently, I've made this for quite some time but didn't release it to the public because it was buggy. (Though, I think someone released it)
Today I finally found some time to fix it so I can share with you guys. I'll let the community help each other out if there's problems.
As usual, code is in github. Cyanogen has grabbed *some* of the codes so it'll be in the next CM.. hopefully.
Changelog
[30-03-10] DOWNLOAD HERE
- Added White to Black gradient (and now the color wheel looks awful )
- Hence, now having 3 extra colors White, Gray, Black
[29-03-10] DOWNLOAD HERE
- Fixed alignment errors for alternate view
- Quite latest changes from CM repo
- early implementation of Font color picker!*** Press the center of the color picker to confirm the color (No white or black color)
[18-03-10] DOWNLOAD HERE
- Black Background option
- Font Size option
- Hide Names option
- Alternate Message Layout option
- When using LatinIME, show Enter button instead of the '' button
Thanks! Downloading this now.
Fan of your work you know I have to try.
Confirmed
Works well. Thank you!
I like it, but for some reason the text of my messages shows up as Dark Grey on the Black BG, which is unreadable. Any way to fix this?
any chance of screenshots?
Really love the way it is looking. Nice and smooth. Black background is sleek, alternative layout is great to see in the stock app. The only thing (which is very small and doesn't bother me really) is with the black background enabled, would it be possible to have an option to set the visibility (right now, it is kind of dark, more so when the screen is dimmer) of my text.
Thank you very much for all the hard work you put into all your mods. It is a great improvement over the original Mms.apk.
It is already in the new CM.
Works great.
looks real nice...any chance of adding an option for mass texting? dunno if it's possible but that'd be great.

Can't you already send text to more than one person at a time?
i think all you have to do is tap on new message and add the name or numbers to the senders list

yea but I meant like ChompSMS allows. Gives you a checklist of all your contacts to easier send a mass text.
SMS delivery reports
There is a problem with the delivery reports for SMS on this version which is released in CM5.05. Sometimes the envelope does not show up at all even though "delivery reports" is checked for SMS.

this is exactly what i was about to bring up haha, arctu does your mod fix this or is it the same as cm 5.0.5 ?
my mod was the caused of the bug. haha. CM uses partial of my code. i'm working on fixing it + CM mms.apk latest patches.
Since you seem to know quite a bit about the MMS backend, could you somehow incorporate something for At&t users? Our MMS send limit is capped at 600k I believe, so whenever we send a MMS, the image needs to be resized or compressed to be below the 600k limit.
As of now, C's ROM doesn't do this, so if we try to send a 1Mb image, it just sits there and never goes.
I'm not sure if this is something set within the MMS.apk file or somewhere else.
Thanks!
!!
Wow great job Arctu! SO MUCH POTENTIAL HERE GUYS! Maybe change the background to different colors? change the font to different types of fonts? This way we would have a nice "stock" sms app. We wouln't need all these "ads" supported third sms apps! (chomp sms) lol

+1 on this. Some sort of customizable size would be ideal.
Possible bug - not checking file size at all!
I believe I found the reason why the Mms.apk in Cyanogen's mod is not resizing the images. I wish I had the programming knowledge to fix it, but I don't.
In packages/apps/Mms/src/com.android.mms.model/ImageModel.java
The class on line 125 checkContentResriction checks for image content type and image resolution but not image size.
Upon further investigation there is checkMessageSize(int messageSize, int increaseSize, ContentResolver resolver) in the CarrierContentRestriction class.
The code is there to handle the exception thrown by this function, but I do not know how to create the ContentResolver to add the lines to the check.
Maybe someone with more programming prowess than I can fix it so we can start sending MMS messages again.
[edit] Think I figured it out, compiling it all now. Anyone know how to just compile the Mms.apk and not the entire thing, kernal, apps, etc...? [/edit]
make Mms
Hope you succeed and share the code.
Did not work. I'll toy with it some more tonight and/or later this week. Hopefully I can figure this out. I am positive it has something to do with the fact that the checkFileSize is not included.

Mod for changing size of dialer on HD2??

Hi, I am currently using HD2 with an officall WWE ROM.
As things are working alright to me so far, I have no intention to get into the business of flashing just yet (not until a year of play around with it before i feel bored~! lol)
However I found the built-in dialer of this offical ROM abit too small, causing wrong dialling sometimes. I have aware that there are a few clever guys who worked on diallers with a much user-friendly interface (such as bigger keys for the number pad, idialer to name one), I found that most of them require to install the whole thing replacing the old, therefore losing the original layout from the offical rom (such as the call history + phonebook interface), which i am quite please with.
So I am here to ask, as I aware that the number pad on the offical dialler could be hidden and I though there must be some setting that limiting it to such a small size, is there any mod or registry setting that I could do or change to make the dialling pad/number pad (whichever why you call it) full screen size, while maintaining the ability to hide inside the offical dialling interface?
THX very much!
You might have better luck in the HD2 forum section. There's probably a thread on dialers there already.
Thanks for your reply, will also try over there~
cheers

Missed Calls Gone

Hi guys,
I just upgraded the phone to the newer ROM that's available on the HTC website. On my home screen, the Missed calls function is gone and I'm left with the calender. Is there a way to add an extra function on top of the calender?
Thanks.
Stock Roms are limited.
WM 6.5 has replaced this with the quick links.
You can try installing a Manila tweak such as Cookies Home Tab or Max Sense for additional functionality.
Thanks, I will try out what you suggested.

Here did u get this ?? can the creator fix the missing link to the alarms?
This tweek is a must, very usefull, not only we get the call history back, but the quick link goes from 3x3 to a 4x4 Matrix.
Issues:
- The Date background was not correctly dimensioned(Fixed),
- The alarm click does nothing,
- It Creates 2 duplicate links in the start menu (for people and HTC calendar) .
Appart from this Issues, it's a very Usefull tweek.
I'll try to alter the original cab to include this changed File, and I'll post it back later on today.
Hello,

[APP] Auto Shortcut - Generate Shortcuts With Custom Icons - 0.2 8/20/10

This is a little app I developed mainly because I got tired of changing all my shortcut icons by hand every time I wanted to try something new.
It works by a folder of icons on your sdcard and matching them to installed applications by name. For example, Browser.png gets mapped to the Browser application.
This is more of a test version i'm looking fro people to find bugs and try other devices.
If you are having problems:
Please send me your log by using the button from the main menu.
Known Issues:
- Very long list of notifications.
Changes:
- 0.2:
You can now edit the title of each app.
I have included a test set of icons, Token Icons, original can be found here: http://brsev.deviantart.com/art/Token-128429570
Now this is cool. Gonna try it out. Only thing is certain apps I like to change the name of when I create shortcuts with BetterCut. Like changing XScope to Browser. I suppose I could do those one by one with BetterCut though.
Adding name changing would be pretty easy.
That would be awesome!
Will try this one for sure
Works really great. It's convenient. Only work involved is naming the icons which can easily be done from your computer before you put them on the sd card.
Updated, you can now set title titles of each shortcut.
going to try it, thanksssssssssss
When I tried it, the buttons of the app did not work properly.
I ran into a slight problem. While selecting the icon folder.
Drilled down to folder.
Hit select...nothing
Hit select...nothing
Hit select...nothing
Hmm
Hit back button...nothing
Hmm
Screen turns black, osmonitor looks maxed out.
After around 5 minutes, maybe more, go into osmonitor and kill auto shortcut.
droid x
Froyo
350+ apps
I have the Droid Incredible, when I get to step 2 "select shortcuts to create" and I tap on create button nothing happens. I could go back to step 2 but I can't do anything on step 2
I'll take a look and throw in some log output data to see if i can find the problem.
could we have some images to test? I want to try this but I have no worthy images to replace my current icons
I added a test set of icons on the original post.
Those of you that are having problems, can you give me your device names and android versions.
didnt work with me
i choose the folder
n' then it shows step2 but nothing listed under it
although i named the icons really easy names ( browser, facebook, phone ) !!!

Did you make sure to capitalize the names? Currently it is case sensitive, perhaps it would be best to ignore the case.
Works on my non-rooted ( ) Evo....anyway we could get more icon packs?

Thumb Keyboard 4.0 - Beta (upd. Beta closed)

Update may 23: The beta is now closed. Thank you all for your participation and feedback. Please keep your suggestions coming. Suggestions and requests are welcome in the Thumb Keyboard thread in the paid-for app forum here on xda (link will follow)
--------------------------------
New beta 4:
Customizable toolbar. The toolbar can be switch on or off with a simple toggle. For phones as well as for tablet (Gingerbread and Honeycomb have more functions to assign to the toolbar keys)
New small keyboard for one handed operation on a 10" tablet. It also contains a "blind spot" which you can use to hold your tablet.
------
Thrilled to announce a brand new version of Thumb Keyboard.
It's a total rebuild from scratch of the current market version, therefore I decided to launch it first as a public beta.
Besides a whole new core that is optimized for Gingerbread and Honeycomb, the new version (v. 4.0) introduces a whole lot of new features:
multi-touch
Correct previous written words with suggestions
Shortcuts - store and edit much written phrases, mail signatures, logins and insert them with a simple tap
New addition to the prediction algorithm: predict a word based on a previous word
New: resize the width of the letter keys on the split layouts. With the option to adjust the height, one can now adjust the keyboard completely to ones own hands and device!!
Alternative suggestions for voice input. Just tap on the recognized word to see the alternatives
Redesign of the keyboard based on multi-touch chording. Entering numbers and operating the cursor keys was never more easy!
New style popup keyboards. Fling, slide and wipe and back to typing again ..
New design of the keyboard layout. Easier access of much used keys
Better esthetic integration with Honeycomb by the use of Honeycomb style windows
and more (and still more to come
The beta can be downloaded from thumb4beta.blogspot.com
(Because the beta was already out for some weeks for 10.1" tablets, some may wonder why this separate announcement. The reason is that the current version will support all screen sizes and layouts, just like the current market version. This means a lot more devices to be supported and a lot more test cases)
Looking forward to your feedback, suggestions, comments, bug reports (hope none ) etc.
-----
Update (May 3):
Version 4 beta 3.2: added Custom portrait/landscape layout combination * Smiley popup keyboards now on all layouts * new theme "digital red" * custom keyclick sounds * better dictionaries * 12 extra shorcut or quicktext slots * Return key in instant messaging apps * option to exclude contact database from predictions * some bug fixes

Thought I've send you mail too. Let me know what you think about it.
Personally I think this is a BIG improvement over the version over the version on the Market. One of the things I liked about the stock GB keyboard was you could tap previously entered words and change what was entered. Love seeing that in here.
The only thing I don't see is being able to set different layouts for portrait and landscape. Being a phone user, I like that the hide keyboard button is hidden.
Big speed improvements as well. Great job!
Thanks going to give this a try!

Thanks! The ability to set different layouts for landscape and portrait mode will certainly come back. It's one of the core functioneren of this keyboard. I left it out just to have something to do while the beta is tested
If you are on Gingerbread or Honeycomb you should try out the bigram predictions (only English supported right now). It will predict in many cases the next word with the previous word and just one letter. For example if you type "of" and then the letter t you get a bunch of relevant words starting with a t and that makes sense as the next word after "of". Great feature for phones. (It will also learn from word pairs that are entered a lot)

I've had a lot of downloads and yet no single bug report. I like to think that the keyboard is completely bug free, but that would be wishful thinking in the context of this giant project.
Any bugs? Please report them here or on the beta site.
I have found what I like to think is a bug.
Say I want to enter todays date. I long press the q for the number 1, the I select the "/" from the upper row and then I long press the t for the number 5. So far so good.
Now I want to enter a different date, like 29/5. I long press to get a 2, the I long press to get a 9. Now the upper bar is empty, and I can't select the "/" there
Another bug: I can't long press the p key to get a 0. All the other keys work.
And a little warning to Desire/Nexus One owners, if you long press the ?123 button while selecting a button on the lower row on the keyboard ( ! " ' : ; / ?), it will probably not work that well. It has to to do with the multitouch on those devices. It has to to with this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhBRMaUn6Ig
If you want I can make a video showing all of these problems.
what about Portuguese - PT? Any plans on implement it?

Thank god a bug You are right, the standard-layout doesn't have a popup menu defined. Thanks for noticing. Will fix it asap.
Glad you sorted the other problem out. I couldn't reproduce it. In some cases the keyboard can act not as expected after a fresh install. In that case a simple, infamous reboot will fix the problem. (Seems like a general Android problem)
