Gnash on Android -- and Devs think they could help advance this? - G1 Android Development

http://wiki.gnashdev.org/Building_for_Android
This looks downright beastly right now. But it'd be phenomenal if we could start adding a working build of this into some of the ROMs out there -- as sort of a "finger in the eye" to the "Big A's".

while I'd love to see gnash (or even swfdec) ported to android, it's also kinda useless at the same time. Have you ever used gnash or swfdec on a pc? The performance is terrible.
I'm sure there will be an official flash release at some point. We actually will probably have better luck with HTML5 though... Youtube's already working on it, and you can test it on a PC. HTML5 video uses ogg/theora, so the codecs are already built in. All we'd need is a HTML5 compatible browser.

Is it any worse than flash-nonfree on a Linux box? They've always seemed comparable to me. Though granted the compatability isn't 100%
Certainly it's better than waiting for another release date only to be told that they didn't meet it... again. And in the meantime, we might be able to encourage that extra tiny bit of open-source goodness on one of the only mainstream open-source platforms out there.

Well we certainly don't need flash for performance/video/games/uselesscrap. What it is required for is sites that present LINKS in flash files. That way at least you'll at least be able to use the functionality.

VMWare For Mobile Devices Lets You Run Windows and Android Simultaneously

Man, I can't even believe VMWare is playing with a mobile hypervisor that's already this functional.
Perhaps the crowd hoping for a way to run Windows Mobile on the Dream will be able to at some point without giving up the awesomeness that is android.

awsome!!!!
Now that is interesting. I wonder which manufacturers will pick up on this...

Sadly, if you mean what I think you mean, I don't think it's going to happen. I may be wrong but I don't think a hypervisor would be applicable by the community, and would need to be put in place by the manufacturers. This may be different for us with total access to everything on the phone, but I'm not sure how far "total" access goes.
It would be rather cool to be running Windows on a mobile, though... And considering Win7 is adding in some rather mobile-friendly features I must admit that'd be awesome
My god, keep your microshaft away from my android. I cant think of anything more disturbing or destructive than running that CRAP on ANYTHING.
A more appropriate application of virtualization is testing of new/customized versions, i.e. testing cupcake on the hardware without compromising existing installed version.
personally, i'd love to have windows installed. i'd just it like she said in the video; windows for work, android for play
would be awesome.

help for business use!

my company (fairly large but will remain nameless) is testing the gtablet with intents to use it as a inventory/shipping tool. I have some HIGH up people asking if its possible and my answer at the time is "NO"....the hardware as we all know is plenty solid but the OS is TERRIBLE! Im looking to streamline this thing (if possible) to make it responsive and reliable with what you want it to do. So the real question is what do i need to do? I of course tried the stock OS and that doesnt work. right now im on the CyanogenMod OS and it is still just to clunky to work in a business. Any ideas of what i need to do or try? Any help would be great guys...and thanks in advance

Probably best served using Vegan b3. It is super stable - very fast. and supports enterprise WPA2.
I think your biggest problem is going to be the size of it. Recently I wandered into an Apple store and was shocked to see ipads strapped to the hands of most of the workers, even with a case with a handstrap the devices looked a bit bulky and awkward to use. The gtab is certainly no smaller than the ipad and without some kind of case that gives it some protection and allows it to be attached to the worker (ie. handstrap), I can't see this being easily used in a shipping or inventory environment. I think really a 5"-7" device would be easier to use in that type of situation. Just my 2 cents.

the size is actually to our advantage (with the use of a case/strap device i have found) because our inventory system uses MANY lines of part numbers that would be impossible to see well (without zooming) on the smaller tablets

Some graphics tearing (Only between screens, like when the browser first loads), is fixed in prototype 12 but that isn't released yet.
Quick office and angry birds works flawlessly.
far as limit's go... *Shrug* I use it at work all the time.
When its in my homemade stand it's playing tune - in radio while I rebuild computers.
When I'm in the field i use it to access our intranet and check on and close service tickets.
I can download drivers and put them on a flash drive.
I can surf the web and do google searches on it to do feild trouble shooting.
It's not heavy at all, so it doesn't weigh down my satchel (as I call it my man purse).
So in my line of work it's a perfect companion, But I have no idea if it would work for you
My 2 cents: As soon as you mention the enterprise, you should really talk to Adam Hanin ("OfficialViewSonic", here in XDA). It's mainly a support concern - these mods are built with the idea that its for personal use, but rolling them out to users in a large company means that you'd want the build being used to be fully supported by Viewsonic.
Right off the bat, you'll have issues with support hours, since their CS is not 24/7. What would happen, for example, if you deployed this and you had issues on a Sunday? Or at 11pm on a weekday? Things like that. Plus, they wouldn't support a modded build, unless you managed to sign some type of contract with them.
i understand the full support but in a larger company we are testing ONLY at this point and it could be some time before we get to a product that rolls out to the work force of our company. Right now we are just trying to prove that it can be done with the gtablet on a basic level (kind of one of those show them what they want to see things). and i do believe the gtablet can produce that given a stable and responsive OS and the VEGAn seems to be a good prospect for testing at least. Anyone have a link to a walkthrough on installing it? I think its worth a shot. if worse comes to worse i just reinstall the stock OS
I don't think anyone has written anything extensive on the VEGAn, yet. There's some documentation for TnT Lite that would apply to VEGAn:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
The only difference would be the ZIP file being used for the build.

I would def mention to your management that Vegan is a hacked version of the G tab and not the way they would get it out of the box. Like Roebeet just stated usually large companies want something fully supported by the manufacturer in case an issue arrises. For example, your running Vegan and call viewsonic tech support and they cant help you with anything since you are using a hacked version of the device. I would think large companies would steer clear of using something like this regardless if its just a testing phase or not.

...plus according to A. Hanin this week's update will allow booting in stock fw to a more vanillalike Android experience, but if you need flash you'd still have to sideload it, plus you'd maybe want to re-package the current fw anyways to include clockwork mod as a better backup/restore option... unless VS does the smart thing and ships something similar in recovery functionality in stock fw...

viewsonic dec 20 press release

Hello,
saw this on the viewsonic website:
viewsonic.com/tablets/
I apologize if this has been already been posted
My favorite part:
In the interim, users can download Flash from various websites that distribute android applications.
Hehe, what websites would those be?
My G-Tablet is sitting in it's box until Christmas Day, and I'm kind of curious to see what they release as a software update on 12/24. I guess I'll allow it to accept all of the OTA updates and see how the product works in stock form before installing TNT 3.0. I'm hoping others will provide their feedback on the forum to compare stock vs. custom ROM in regards to speed, FC's, etc. All things considered, I'd just assume keep it stock if the performance is similar just so I can continue receiving OTA updates, but that might be asking too much. Still, great to see Viewsonic stepping up to the plate to improve the user experience.
I hav run custom roms since this thing has been out of box for 15 minutes. I also used a couple of store demo units and watched videos on youtube with stock roms. I think I am fairly well versed on the roms of these things. I will tell you this, you will always have a faster machine with a custom rom. There are just things in the customs that Viewsonic will not put in. Also, the stock TapNTap layer adds some overhead to the unit. With that said, I ran mine with the 3316 udate that Roebeet found the other day and was fairly impressed on how usable the tab was.
I agree with you, let in run the updates on Saturday when you open it and use it for a day. If it meets your needs you can leave it like that. You may not be unhappy with it stock. If you want to try a rom, you always have that option. I installed TNT Lite on my wife's tab and I am thinking about putting her's back to stock. She might like that TapNCrap UI.

I've gotta say, even as a fairly more advanced user, I like 3316. TnT, as long as it's not slogging, isn't bad. Other than the 'to do' list screen, which is useless to me, the screens are generally appealing and useful. Weather's quick, good, and the news interface isn't bad, especially since I never got into using Reader. With 3316's ability to switch over to more vanilla Android, I'm pretty happy with stock3316+root+flash+market. It's responsive enough.
I assume that this 3316 update is the same one that they will be pushing out OTA on 12/24, or will there be yet another update then?

3338 is definitely UAT / pre-release. TnT puts these on an externally facing link and (sometimes) pushes it out to user devices, but I don't think this one was. It's possible that 3338 might be the 12/24 version, but we don't know yet.
So taking a look at that press release and also Viewsonic tweets I see these bits of info:
“As a result, our software partner is releasing an upgrade that will address customer concerns. Along with great performance improvements, customers will have the flexibility to use both a standard Android interface as well as a user-customizable interface which has been significantly enhanced since the product launch.” - Press Release Dec 20
"We're releasing an update to gTablet s/w this week. Will address performance & UI issues, including option to boot to Android." - Twitter Dec 20
Are they giving us the option to not use the TapNTap?

I think they are moving towards making the TapNTap portion more of a "dashboard." Since it was made to run on fridge and wall based devices, I think it isn't the best for everyday browsing use. Instead the default will be the more standard android look launcher.
However, you still will be using the TapNTap framework, hence the familar look of the status bar and popup windows, options, etc.

[Q] Is it really difficult to improve copy and paste?

I've been wondering for a while now why nobody has come up with a better method to copy and paste in Android. I've seen devs do amazing things with Android in general and some other devs make fantastic apps but I haven't seen anything worth looking at in the way of a good, solid and workable "copy / paste" solution.
I know that Gingerbread brings improved copy and paste but even that seems inconsistent and fiddly. The HTC Desire HD has a pretty good implementation of it but that's limited to the Sense UI. All this leaves me to ask the question I have already in the subject line. Is it really difficult to improve copy and paste? I dislike the iPhone for a lot of reasons but one thing I think they've done well is copy and paste. It still has issues but it's far above what Android has to offer right now. Even the improved version in Gingerbread is just for text selection. Is anyone up to the task?
Well I'm glad that I managed to get such a big response to this issue >_> Seriously though, nobody can improve on what we have? We have kernels that blow the stock ones out of the water, replacement launchers that make people weep in joy, mods like CyanogenMod that make everything run super smooth but nobody has ever touched copy and paste functionality.
Because it works. Yes it could be there for improvement but it's something that already works and is decent enough. You make it sound like that it needs such a vast improvement. Android is for phones, not desktops. I see no problem in using copy and paste because it works fine. Devs have other issues to be getting on with like making stable roms, kernels, so on.
The same could be said about a whole heap of stuff like the default launcher, the default widgets, kernel etc. They all work but have been vastly improved by the dev community. I'm just wondering if there's a better reason than nobody has bothered yet. You might think it's decent enough, frankly I think it's a pretty weak point in Android.
There are lots of legacy devices that won't see 2.3, some won't see 2.2 and others that won't even see 2.1 but are still very capable phones. I can live with how it works in 2.3 and when HTC use it to improve their 2.2 copy and paste it'll be even better but as I said not everyone will have that ability. I honestly think that anyone who came up with a better solution for older phones could make a fair amount on the market. If I had the programming skills to attempt it myself I would.
I guess Google made decisions to sort of "cut back" on their dev like widgets and launcher because they wanted a nice dev community. And guess what, they've got one. Go ask a developer directly. I don't think that they would of seen this post. Personally, I think that Android is such an awesome OS to use and I can't really say anything bad about it. To be honest, all the stuff that Google does is free and is a great service.

[Q] Will using a custom Rom solve my issues with the Transformer?

i have been an owner of the Transformer for just under a week, to be honest i think its a let down.
Internet experience is slow and jerky, flash takes a while to speed up. (Ive tried all browsers)
N64iod runs better and faster on my xperia play (which is a 1 core processor)
Some games seem to re-download every time i run them.
Cant play 720p with HW enabled with SW there slow.
Live wallpapers slow down the OS, my Xperia doesn't!
I could go on.
I know the OS is relatively new, but i cant buy that. The tablet cost me £415 with dock, If i was a normal customer, (the everyday user) i would take it back to the shop as i would think it was broke.
My last point is the constant crashes, it even locked up while trying to shut down.
So please please please tell me there is an answer, i so want to like it, as the concept is brill, i based buying this on my xperia play, i love the os, but honeycomb maybe the problem here!
Cheers.

First of all, what android version and firmware build are you running and are you rooted? Secondly, have you performed any OTA updates since you bought your TF? Before I installed a custom rom on my TF, I myself have experienced serious lag and slow down due to multiple OTA updates. As with any pc based platform, its typically best to do a full wipe and perform a clean install to have it running at its peak. Before I took the route of a custom rom, i did a full wipe and fresh install and could immediately tell the difference in speed. So my suggestion is that you take that route first. Also, if you are interested in rooting and installing a custom rom, be advised that starting with the B70 revision, ASUS changed and locked down the bootloaders and they are currently unrootable at this time...which means you won't be able to install a custom rom. Find your S/N and if it starts with B70 or higher, then you won't be able to root at this time.
I have not had to many FCs, either stock or on Prime. Most times that I get any problems at all are in the stock browser, and usually thenjust a matter of slowness and the occasional "FC or Wait" prompt; particuarlly on more 'involved' web pages. Loading pages are also fairly sloow at times but still faster than my phone. My phone uses Opera for tremendous inprovement over it's stock browser.
Don't know about the 720p, haven't tried and don't know what program you used. Out of box is rather minimal audio/video playback as far as I noticed.
General performance wise, this thing beats a number of x86 systems I've had, espiecally while compiling C/C++ code.
If it's not something closer to the hardware, doing an nvflash to a custom rom might be worth trying but it can be an irk to deal with nuking everythiing you have stored, backups or no.
Internet experience is slow and jerky, flash takes a while to speed up. (Ive tried all browsers)
Latest Flash, Latest Browser (3.2.1) - runs good.
N64iod runs better and faster on my xperia play (which is a 1 core processor)
I have this issue, too - probably Tegra2 related (OCing may help?)
Some games seem to re-download every time i run them.
What games? Never noticed it.
Cant play 720p with HW enabled with SW there slow.
Get DicePlayer - best player around, supports HW acceleration and 720p is good as well (compared to others) - thanks to tegra2 plugins. Not free tough.
Live wallpapers slow down the OS, my Xperia doesn't!
Higher resoltioun and tegra2 issue AFAIK (might be wrong).

You are correct, custom roms are always going to end up being preference. If you are able to root, the best way to start off this endeavor is to visit the posts of all 3 major roms for the TF in the development section. Find out what each rom offers, and make your decision based off of that. You can always try out each rom to see which one you like better.
My choices are limited now
checked my serial and its B70.
Looks like i'm stuck with stock until asus / google sort my issues.
One last question?
i here good things about opera, but i dont like the way it loads (waiting for the page to load before displaying) is there anyway to disable this feature?
Sometimes you just want to click on a link i dont really want the whole page to load!
Asus changed the bootloader not too long after they started making the B70 revisions. So there is a very small window of chance that your TF can be rooted. You can always try, but the chances are slim. I can't answer your Opera question...I don't use Opera.

There is no option for this in Opera Mobile; I should know, it's what I use off the phone next to me .
Opera Mini is probably the same, but I would highly doubt it would support that feature even if it wasn't.
@blonqe: I posted something similar and goodintentions replied the same way... he has down syndrome, bless his heart...
Anyway, just accept you got suckered in to all this EEE Fad, iFad marketing BS. The Tegra 2 is a $5 PoS SoC... kind of like the PoS Atom CPU.
Tabs are fairly useless, but you wanted to waste some money
Oh if you disable flash in the stock browser it's speed is good.

Lol, this man has made the greatest mod to his TF!
But yeah, try running a custom rom (if you can) and see if your problems are still present. If so, contact Asus and maybe they will give you a replacement, could simple be some hardware malfunctions.
well i tried to root using the all in one tool, when trying to backup and root i kept getting an error cannot boot to pad or something like that, so for now ive had to admit defeat and wait for some bright spark to hopefully crack the new bootloader :-(

Just wanted to bump my original thread to say after alot of complaing from me i can now say i am a proud owner of the Asus Transformer TF101.
Thanks to the fact i can now root and install custom roms.
After a few weeks of trial and error, i tried, revolver, Prime and KRAKD.
The latter for me was easily the best so so smooth, OC 1.504 i tried same on the other Roms, but with KRAKD i had no issues and its just so much quicker in my opinion.
One issue that exists in all the custom roms is that the xbox controller doesn't work until you change the kernel. Weird.
Brwosing is more of a joy and with ICS on its way my tablet experience is looking up!
Still tempted by windows 8 but we will wait and see.
Glad to hear everything worked out.
If you have a PS3, you should be able to use a Sigaxis controller using the Sigaxis application on the market as well.
