Auto deleting old texts messages - General Questions and Answers

Hi all,
I have a HTC HD2 and it is running the latests HTC ROM.
Is there a way to delete just old texts automatically. It saves everything by conversation and some of my conversations are approaching 1000 texts long this is causing some lag when opening the conversation to add a new reply. Is there a way to tell the phone to only save the last 100 texts in a conversation and delete the rest. Or by date. It wouldn't have to delete them if it could just not load them into the conversation that would be good.
The only way i have managed to do this is to go through and select delete all messages then unselected the first 100. Any help will be amazing.
Cheers,
Oblique

SMS Delete!

After several attempts, I have realized that when an SMS viewed from the TF3D tab and deleted using the screen option, it just gets deleted without being stored in the "Trash Folder", where as if the same SMS was viewed using the SMS box -the old way- and thereafter deleted, it goes to the Trash folder.
Funny ain't it? I lost many of such SMS and tried to retreive'em hopelessly...

SMS Disappeared

I'm using the HTC Diamond. But I thought I'll put this in the General problem as this might not only apply to the TD.
Today I received an sms and I couldn't get into the message to read it, so I decided to turn off my phone, and turn it back on again – I did the soft reset (pressing the power button on the top of the phone and not the instant soft reset button). I have done this before and it worked after that.
However, after I turned on the phone again today, the smses I received and sent since 23/07/2009 have disappeared.
I also checked the most recent call history and it's there – so it's not as if the phone decided to backdate itself.
Has this happened to anyone else? I would like to retrieve those missing smses (at least the ones I received) if I could. Is there a particular directory that the phone stores these smses?
Help would be much appreciated!

Mine aren't threaded either.
I can understand if it decided to delete today's or even yesterday's messages, since it takes a while for the messages to be saved onto the rom.
But I can't figure out why it deleted messages up to 2 weeks ago.
And did you have any way to retrieve the missing smses?

updating a contact take an age

is any one experiencing long delay when saving a contact that has been updated.
Update a couple of contacts today (first change since I got my phone) each one took > 45 seconds to save.
I have about 450 contacts on my phone.

Backup and delete all you SMS messages and this problem will disappear.
I faced this delay
johncmolyneux, are you sure by clearing sms box the problem disappears?

Problem deleting large amounts of text messages.

I have 3 or 4 conversations that I had saved for personal reasons that are over 1500 messages long and I no longer need them. Every time I try to delete the texts, my phone just freezes or gets really laggy until I have to just reboot or pull the battery. Is there an easier way or better way to delete threads with that many texts?
Delete one thread each night before going to bed. When you wake up it should be gone. Repeat each night until they're gone.

Yes in all seriousness I have done exactly that, I'm a text hoarder too. On some of my previous smart phones the phone would seem to freeze, but if i left it alone a few hours when i got back the threaded conversation was gone.
Rooted Thunderbolt on BAMF Sense 3.0 RC 4 with MR2 radio and latest dreamKernel.
you might try using handcent for your sms's. Just deleted a convo over 1000+ messages in a few seconds. Didn't bog the phone down either.
i have had a few conversations not nearly as large as yours before deleting
and it did seem to take a while.
I had the exact same problem. Try deleting them before you go to bed and see if they are gone in the morning. It took mine like almost an hour to delete 2000. It looks like its doing nothing, but eventually the disappear.
Messages settings delete old threads look there...or applications manage applications what ever sms program clear cache next step clear data...something goes south restart phone......

I use a program from the market called "delete old messages" - the free version. It has a few less options than paid, but it deletes my messages very nicely. I started using it when I had my Eris since the phone would get so bogged down.
Probably would be wise to limit message count to 200 or less as well. Much more and it really drags rump.
