Has anyone tried the new official Magic ROM? - myTouch 3G, Magic Android Development

Hi, I noticed on twitter yesterday that there is a new Magic ROM
http://www.htc.com/europe/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=267&act=sd&cat=all
The category is ROM upgrade, and the date is 2010-01-28
I had to use twitter to find it, as it didn't show under a normal search (probably as I have UK as my country).
Is it the long awaited Android upgrade?
Thanks
Dan.

Well.. not sure if long awaited..
But it is the official Android 1.5 Sense UI rom for the HTC Magic!
It basically turns your Magic into a Hero (multitouch browsing, usb-tethering, HTC Sense widgets, HTC keyboard, etc.)
For me, the long awaited will be the Android 2.1 Sense UI rom, which will hopefully hit the Magic by the end of March.
Installation Instructions:
ROM Version:3.05.401.3
Improved Functions
This ROM Upgrade for your HTC Magic will let you experience HTC SenseTM on your phone. HTC SenseTM lets you create a phone just right for you. You can customize your experience to be any way you like. Discover intuitive experiences that make everything you do on your phone effortless and delightful.

Aha, ok, thanks for getting back to me.
The wait for 2.1 continues...

This ROM has been posted already.
Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=621415

Mmm, I did see that one but didn't think it could be the same, as the thread was started on the 21st, and the date on the support page was 28th and the twitter details came in yesterday (and again this morning).
All very odd, I guess HTC's support page isn't quite 100% accurate.

I'm seriously considering to buy Magic as my second phone. I hope to get used to Android before I will switch fully. I have a few questions, though. I hope someone will find the time to answer.
- Is it Magic 32A that is needed for this update?
- Is 32A superior to 32B in terms of memory or other features?
- How can I easily tell the model (i.e. 32A or 32B) when holding the handset in my hands? (say, I'll be allowed to reboot or do any non-destructive actions
- Is it true that Magic will get an official Android 2.x update?
Thanks for your answers. I need to decide fast - the price is very good.
Cheers

- Is it Magic 32A that is needed for this update?
Yes
- Is 32A superior to 32B in terms of memory or other features?
It just has more ram afaik.
- How can I easily tell the model (i.e. 32A or 32B) when holding the handset in my hands? (say, I'll be allowed to reboot or do any non-destructive actions
Reboot whilst holding the 'back' key. On the fastboot screen you'll see PVT 32A or 32B.
- Is it true that Magic will get an official Android 2.x update?
Apparently!

st0kes, thanks for your answers (I know I'm a bit late to say thanks)..
since the guy who was "selling" that Magic ceased to communicate (after I told him that I want 32A and I will verify it before I buy the handset), I have a few more questions.
- I might get Magic from US, but I have no idea if 32A was ever sold in US. where can one buy 32A handset in US?
- by what names goes 32A in different countries?
- how much RAM exactly sports 32A?
- any idea where can one buy 32A in The Netherlands?
thanks in advance

Good morning,
I also managed to get it up and running but not without a few bad words
But it is working, looks very stable and fast and not so vanilla anymore
One thing though... I'm working with Google Apps and my phone flawlessly synched all my contact. When I go to the "People" tab I get "all" my contacts and there is no way to select/show the ones with phone numbers only.
With the original ROM I was able to select/show contacts with phone numbers only.
Do I overlook something here or should I wait for an update?
Thanks and have a nice day!

32B Radio on 32A Magic?

Hi all,
I've been waiting for the HTC Magic 32A kernel source for some time so that I can compile netfilter/iptables support into the kernel. I would really like to tether my phone to my laptop while I'm out of the office.
I notice that most of the 32B ROMs have support for tethering.
Would it be possible to flash a 32B radio on to my 32A device and then use the 32B ROMs?
I'm reasonably comfortable flashing the radio on my phone, but I don't want to go through the procedure if it's not going to work.
Could somebody point me in the right direction please?

OK, now I'm not sitting here hitting 'F5' waiting for HTC to announce that they've released the source code. Still would like to see it available, but I can wait now.

1 caveat. The 32A loses it's memory advantage. The 32B radio doesnt seem to allow the phone to see all of its memory...kernel issue probably. That's why not all 32A users have switched...we like our memory!

Yes, and that's why I bought a 32a version in the first place!!
Yeah, I've noticed that the ROM that I flashed the morning (nk02 32B) is running a fair bit slower than its 32A counterpart. I think I can handle this until the 32A source is released and I can tether using a 32A ROM.
In the meantime though, I'm quite happy with the 3.5G data while out of the office.

OK, I couldn't handle how slow my phone was running. It was painful! Waiting for the Apps tray to open sometimes took 15 seconds. And when I unlock the screen, I get a Close/Wait prompt for android.acore. I tried a couple different 32B ROMs but they were all pretty slow compared to the performance I'm used to. I'm sure if I didn't need to have so many apps installed and have the Hero theme it would be a lot faster...
As for the tethering, I found an application called AziLink. It doesn't use the iptables/netfilter functionality, but runs more like a VPN server through adb. It's buggy as hell, and disconnects all the time, but it'll do for now.

[DEV] Running Hero ROM on 32A with new radio and SPL

Hi all!
OK, so I had some spare time on my hands this afternoon and I came up with something pretty neat.
Ever notice how the HTC Hero and the HTC Magic 32A are nearly identical in specs? Same processor, same ROM, same RAM... Then why do all these devs port the HTC Hero ROMs over to 32B/Dream and then we get to try to port them to 32A? It always ends up being a mess of custom work and the problem of 'too many chefs in the kitchen'. I'm not slamming anyone's hard work here, but I wanted to find some other way.
The HTC Hero uses nearly identical radio and SPL as the new radio and SPL for the Magic 32A.
http://android.modaco.com/content/h...-24-11-hero-roms-radios-in-update-zip-format/
My device:
HTC Magic 32A
Radio: 6.35.07.29
SPL: 1.76.2007
Hero ROM used - HTC Generic 2.73 (rooted)
Changes Made that affect functionality:
- replaced boot.img and wlan.ko from CursorSense32A-0.3
- Umm, that's it...
What works:
- Wifi
- Camera
- LEDs
Untested (because I'm at work!)
- Bluetooth (pairs with my laptop, but can't test audio or a2dp)
Cosmetics
- Bluetooth name is HTC Hero
As you can see, it already works better than the initial HTC Hero stuff we got from the Dream devs before.
Am I stupid? Why did I do this when there is already a proper HTC Sense ROM for the Magic 32A? Because right now the Dream/32B devs have in their possession the HTC Hero 2.1 image and it's being ported to 32B/Dream. And now we're left trying to port these ROMs to the 32A platform. It's kinda like driving from New York to Toronto via Mexico City.
I'm excited to try some of these tactics on the Hero 2.1 ROM. I'm sure it'll work very much the same.
Why so many threads?

This is the first OFFICIAL announcement of Android 2.1 + Sense UI on the HTC Magic.
WOOOOHOOOO!!! (although I won't actually believe it till it comes out)
This means Sense UI with proper SMS timestamp (not smsfixtimes workaround which sometimes doesnt work!!! )
Hmmmm... 2.1 + SenseUI by mid-year..
Wonder what Android version Google will have at that time?
G_____? H____??
hopefully, it wouldn't be too late until it's released..
I'm not going to update with 1.5 + SenseUI, but maybe with the 2.1+SenseUI..
how about you guys?

Very good news.
In fact only after sseing that will believe, but we hope other carriers update aswell.
Nice.. they changed their minds.. probably too many disappointed customers.
now we just wait to see if they will hold up to their promise.
Would doing the update not be a good idea if I want to root? What if it makes it difficult or impossible to root. Would it be better to wait til someone makes some Roms based off the updates? Thx

better wait for rooted rom that's based on the official one.
Waiting for a rooted rom based on the official shouldn't take that long Now it's just a loooong wait for this "mid year release"
It isn't so much for Dream users, they're only getting 1.5 updated. Good thing I have a Magic
Who caress. I gave up on rogers with their bs. Ill wait for the rooted rom with better add ons etc blahhhhhhhhh
I'm not exactly excited about this... Seems Canada is always the last to get all the good stuff when it comes to wireless. I'm still waiting for an unlimited data plan like most other modern countries enjoy.
Sense UI, the hideous windows lookalike interface that hides the pretty/simple linux interface. I hope there will be an option to remove it... if not then iam sticking with cyan, or getting a nexus one..

Actually, this is Android 1.5 + HTC Sense and then Android 2.1. No one said that Android 2.1 + HTC Sense (Expresso) will be on the Magic.
That's pretty awesome. I have a Rogers HTC Magic unlocked and on the AT&T network and I am running Cursordroids 9.6 rom. If I put the stock rom on there and return to the stock radio, will I get the OTA update? Or will the update only be pushed through the Rogers network?

Is there an custom android 2.1 rom for 32b magic

Hi, can anyone tell me or post a link to android 2.1 rom for 32b magic?, i have looked around and can't seem to find any....if there is any?.

Devs have stopped posting 32b roms here as they are all compatible with the HTC Dream these days. You can find at least 3 Eclair roms in the Dream section that will work on the 32b magic.
cheers, i'll take a look.

actually the 2.0.1 update was just for the droid.
Magic 32B will get the 2.1 update in some form during summer.

I'd be happy with 2.1 without Sense. My experience of Sense is that it's eye candy bloat my phone doesn't need. First thing I do is go around and kill alll the huge widgets that don't tell me anything I want to know.....I can check the weather when I want to know the weather.

actually, it may be earlier. According to the myTouch fender edition press release that version (which is a 32a) will be getting the 2.1 update in spring of this year. (march-may most likely)
Even though the fender is a 32a, safe to say that the 32b version for the normal mytouch will be out at the same time. So hopefully march-may now instead of summer.
If Sense is coming to MyTouch AT ALL (officially)
32b are withgoogle phones.
so it might just get stock 2.1 android without any custom UI.
32a phones are the ones from HTC. They have more RAM to store the whole eyecandy stuff...
BUT the community will take care about it. (actually there already are 2 sense 2.1 Roms avaliable for mytouch 3g in the dream section. (called "Espresso") (!)
I had installed one yesterday.
Liked the original Hero Sense UI better. Only cool new thing is the animated browser progress bar(!)
yeah the espresso sense is ass. default sense + 2.1 will be very nice.
though with how nice 2.1 is i'm really gonna be torn between default and sense.
Id be happy with 2.1 on my magic..... Now! lol by summer i will have a better android by that time i hope..... nexus one? or maybe bravo??? or even the xpiria x10 if sony pull their finger out and sort out the laggyness.
As i started this thread feel free to share any info on new sense UI roms or eclair roms with or without sense or pretty much anything you would like to share :-D

Come On Dudes! Do It! A Magic Sense Rom must run good on the G1!
Maybe somebody could replace the Sense UI for the Android original. The hardware is not so different, just a little bit more memory.
I want this ROM ported to HTC Magic 32B because since Android 2.x we always have memory leaks in the camera driver.
I definitely want this ported!
I definitely want this ported too! Especially if it finally bring Sense to the G1 without draining our battery in less than day. Or in another cases requires so many changes that it becomes too unstable.

this is definitely possible. Most people Dont know that the cause for battery drain is a combination of:
1. swap
2. "optimized kernels"
These both exist to make sense roms usable on our phones, and they do make them usable but they drain battery.
the only advantage that this 32a build with sense may have is optimizations of the apk's and frameworks that could account for a speedier experience, and therefore introduce the possibility of cutting down on the two factors listed above.
It is very possible to do, and in fact easy. If the demand is high enough, i'll do it myself... add ideas/input here.

Another thing to remember is that 32A's have about 100 mb more ram, so 32B's actually need some of those things to make them more usable. Anybody know anything about the radio that released with it? I mean, is it still a locked down 3.X rogers radio, or is it something 2.X, or even 6.X? Another thing of interest would be bluetooth, but I'm not sure if 32A's and B's share the same bluetooth chip. +1 for the port jcarzz, I would try it myself but I'm still learning. We should also try to extract the camara drivers, the way I understand it in CM5/6 we're using a hacky method with backported donut drivers and a few other things. We could really pull a lot from this.
Okay, so I looked a few things up and answered some of my own questions. It does include a new radio 6.35.16.19, but it's not something we can use. Maybe some of the guys who have JTAG equipment can experiment with flashing it. Since it's not a G1 radio we shouldn't get bluetooth working so cross that off the list too. Still a promising release though.

Hehe I figured so, but I wasn't rooted yet when all the hero rom's started coming out so I didn't know that til now. And I looked through cyanogen's twitter and he mentioned that the camera drivers were tied to the radio so we can't pull that from it either. GL on porting it.
