***O.P. EDIT***
The link above does contain some more detailed information but the guide below has yet to cause a brick.
IF YOU PLAN TO FLASH THIS SPL PLEASE READ THIS WHOLE POST
This is for the Dream/G1 ONLY. If you have a Sapphire/MT3G this SPL is not needed.
If you have no idea what a SPL is or you are looking for info on other SPLs please read this page http://code.google.com/p/android-roms/wiki/SPL
Let me start off by saying that I have nothing to do with the actual development of the SPL. I also take no responsibility if you do decide to flash this SPL and brick your phone. That being said I decided to create a "How To" for the SPL for the simple fact that I would have switched to it long ago if I knew how easy and safe it was.
The SPL that you need for many of the new Eclair ROMs along with Hero ROMs and some Donut ROMs like Super D is a special SPL created by Haykuro that basically gives you more space to flash larger ROMs. When Haykuro first released the SPL there were reports of people bricking their phones. It turned out that the reason for the SPL causing a brick was because the SPL needed to be flashed over the latest radio and requires a PVT board. If the SPL is flashed over a radio version prior to "2.22.19.26I" or on a DVT board it will cause a brick. After people heard about this SPL causing bricks it became known as the Danger or Death SPL because of the danger that it can cause death to a G1.
A lot of people including my self were very worried about flashing the SPL in fear of a bricked phone. The result being many people not wanting to flash certain ROMs because they do not want to brick their phone. Some devs have actually changed their ROMs just to make them small enough to flash with out the Danger SPL so that more people will use their ROM.
Well if you are reading this and you don't have the Danger SPL because of the fear of a brick well then don't worry its ok to be scared but this "How To" will get you through it safe and sound.
IMPORTANT: Before going any further make sure that you have PVT board. You can do this by rebooting your phone and holding the camera button. The first line should say "PVT" if you see "DVT" then DO NOT flash this because odds are you will get a brick but If it says "PVT" then you are good to go.
First you are going to need to download the latest radio and the SPL. both can be found here http://code.google.com/p/sapphire-port-dream/ There is also a new radio that is compatible that can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=640535
Prior to starting the installation process please make sure that your battery has a good charge. Also DO NOT pull your battery out at anytime during the installation process. I know it seems like common sense but I read a thread where someone had pulled their battery in the middle of the installation process and they ended up with a brick.
Now that all that's out of the way lets get started!
1. Copy "ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip" or "G1-radio-2_22_23_02.zip" and "spl-signed.zip" onto the root of your SD card.
2. Reboot into recovery. I suggest using the RA-dream recovery you can download it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566669
3. Wipe your phone "factory data reset" (this step isnt really necessary since your phone is wiped after flashing the SPL but I always like to wipe before flashing anything)
DO NOT SKIP THIS NEXT STEP OR YOU WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE
You must have the latest radio "2_22_19_26I" or "2_22_23_02" to flash this SPL if you already have the latest radio you should not have to flash it again but it will not hurt if you do flash it again. When in doubt flash it anyway.
4. Flash the Radio "ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip" or "G1-radio-2_22_23_02.zip" it will install and then it will ask you to reboot to finish the installation, so reboot, it will then finish installing and then reboot back into recovery.
5. Flash the SPL "spl-signed.zip" it will install and then ask you to reboot to finish the installation, so reboot, it will then finish installing and reboot into recovery so you can flash your ROM
A simple way to make sure that the SPL flashed correctly is when you reboot to the boot loader screen by holding the camera button you will see HBOOT-1.33.2005. You can also see that it flashed correctly by checking your system size it will now be 89mb a very easy was to check this is with the My Account app available in the Market.
Great idea to post this again, since so many people are asking about it.
I flashed mine way back when Haykuro first posted it, and I seem to remember that you had to have a PVT board as well. Is this still the case? I can't remember whether or not anyone found out otherwise.

PVT = a must have.
Also forgot to mention that when you reboot after flashing the SPL, you have to reboot with Home+Back

Yeah thats a big reason I decided to post this, so many ROMs now say they require Death/Danger SPL and only a couple actually provide a link or some type of simple instructions. I figure with a dedicated "How To" we can eliminate questions about the SPL in ROM threads and make people feel a little more comfortable with flashing it. I dont believe anyone actually tested it without a PVT board. I havent even seen anyone one here that doesnt have PVT board. Just in case though I will edit the OP, thanks for remembering that because I completely forgot that it has only been tested on a PVT board as far as I know.
also you should include how to know which spl you have. i was about to flash the danger spl again because i forgot i already had it

If I remember right, some people flashed the radio first, and still bricked, and the difference was that they didn't have a PVT board.
Maybe you should also put in big red letters at the beginning about flashing the radio first. You can tell by reading all the questions on here that at least half of the people don't read the instructions, they just flash away in any order they feel like flashing!

Very true red letter warning has been added.
Please if anyone has suggestions for this "How To". Dont hesitate to post. I made this to help people out so if you have an idea that will help let me know.
When I first got a G1 as a test phone I tried to flash the radio/spl and it failed repeatedly. I'll try it again as I have had the phone for awhile and I want to try some of the newer ROMs
EDIT: Still getting fails on the radio flash.
it says:
Install from sdcard
Finding update package
Opening update package
E: Can't open /sdcard/ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip (bad)
Installation aborted
could it be my sd card?
It looks good now!
I remembered right:
Ok if u press the camera button + power to power the phone up and if u see "PVT" then ur good to go if u see "DVT-1 or 2" then u should defenetly not flash cuz almost every1 with dvt gets "bricked".

it is called Haykuro SP: .2005 you guys have to get your facts straight.Haykuro is the person that ported the Magic's SPL to the Dream to allow larger roms to be installed.
Both the Radio & SPL are here:

So does SPL flashing only apply to G1's? I have a mt3g. I can safely flash any rom w/o flashing an SPL first?

Thank for finding that I just edited it again
I'm snowed in tonight, so I'm gonna try this out. I hope everything I need to know is here. If I do a Nandroid+EXT backup before, will I be able to Nandroid Restore after the SPL upgrade?
So I tried to flash the spl yesterday cuz i wanted to try out some new roms, but I kept on getting errors everytime I flashed the spl and it aborted. So after a while i just gave up and went back to cyanogen. Does anybody know why there would be errors when installing the spl. and yes I did flash the radio first.

That is correct. This SPL actually is the one that if for your mt3g but edited for the G1 so that it can flash larger ROMs.

Its called Sapphire to dream port for a reason. You can use the .2004 or .2010 SPL or whatever its called instead.
If I already have the correct radio, do I have to re-flash the radio again before flashing the SPL?
The reason I am asking is that I have 2 G1's.. the first I unknowingly did everything right and have the danger SPL without any problems. When I went to root the second one a couple of months later, I bricked it even though I thought I did everything right. Now my "new" phone has the correct radio, but only the engineer's SPL and I want to try some of the newer ROMs but am afraid to brick the phone again.
Thanks

Hi all,
First off I am no SPL genius and I don't know much but figured someone should start a thread to get clarity on the matter.
I have noticed that a lot of people have questions about their SPL...
I have noticed that there are lots of SPL threads but many are not that clear (From what I have found...I am not bashing anyone, you guys rock!)
Okay...so...
Here's the first question and I've seen this asked...and I need an answer also.
I have a MT3G and changed my stock SPL to Haykuro's 1.33.2005 SPL with no issues and didn't even have to re-install my ROM. Easy!
Okay... Now I hear and see people saying to use the engineering 1.33.2009 SPL.
Q:What's the difference between .2005 and .2009 SPL?
Q:If it's worth the change can it be easily flashed from one to the other with no issues?
If anyone needs this for reference...

I also need to know. I did not change my spl. I rooted mytouch with anon ra v1.2.3.
Do I need to change spl, if I do do I need to unroot then root with other spl? Or can I just change my spl without rerooting and reflashing.?
Hey htcclay.,
I currently have mghtymax 1.9.1 Rom can I change my stock spl without removing my Rom ?
Also what's the purpose for spl? Does it make your Rom run faster

Well...
I decided to get away from the "stock factory" SPL.
I have heard that the "Stock" SPL is fine in flashing almost anything.
I mainly did so because I wanted to change my boot screen and could do so with out it.
You dont' need to un-root or re-root going from factory SPL to 1.33.2005 SPL.
It's just a simple update flash.
Was for me anyway.
I am not responsible if you brick your phone.

So what is an SPL anyway? What does it do?
The SPL, or Second Program Loader, is essentially the Android bootloader. It's job is more than just loading the Android OS - it also offers several other boot options, including Recovery mode, Fastboot, and HBOOT modes, and ultimately it's the SPL that allows manipulation of the flash nand on your device. Part of the SPL's job is to ensure that the data flashed to the device is correct. Most of the current shipping SPLs (apart from the "Perfect SPL's) let us flash a complete ROM image, but don't let us flash a recovery rom or boot image as it checks the verification signature. Haykuro has modified the SPL's available to remove this check and this is what the Engineering SPL's available offer. As the SPL is so crucial to the handset though, you have to be very careful when flashing it as if it's updated incorrectly then you may be incapable of restoring it without specialised hardware and knowledge. You essentially have a very expensive brick

Kool thanx for the info bro. I'll keep my boot screen.
Keeping it going
I fell off the face of the planet when it comes to updating my phone. I followed directions a long time ago to convert my mytouch 32a to a 32b device and also downgraded the spl (i believe thats what it was)
My question is:
Im looking to put another rom on here, this isnt as easy as it was w/ the g1 i had used for a while.
Im wondering how to properly flash this rom to my phone. Do i just do a normal wipe and flash?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=575501
im very familiar w/ adb and commands, just let me know the proper process needed and that should do it really. Just dont want to brick my phone due to something i SHOULDNT have did (something with the spl not being right, if i remember im on the 2005 that was needed due to the unrootable spl that was shipped w/ the phone, goldcard method).
***EDIT***
forgot to mention clearly that i am running cyanogens last rom right before googles butt in.
If this steps on anyones toes, sorry.
If your just trying to update the rom, do a wipe then update the rom, not gonna brick it unless your doing spl... be sure to nandroid before...
what spl do you have right now? haykuros 1.33.2005? what rom do you want to flash?
Ohh and it is much easier than when I first did it with the G1.. so relax, take your time, look at what rom you need, research the recovery rom as you didnt mention it.
to tell what spl you just boot the phone with power and back then read from the top

im using the 2005 haykuro i believe, the one that you used through tutorials to get rid of the unrootable spl. I am using the RAv1.2.1g recovery.
the whole "wiping and flashing" isnt a problem with a nadroid backup. Only thing confusing me is this 32a and 32b. Since i "converted" im confused as to how dedicated these for functionality.
well when you boot into fastboot what pvt board does it say? i would ask around because i didnt know you could change pvt boards...this could either be a BIG THING or it couldnt matter...

exactly why i created the thread

Hello.
I've been here for around a week now, reading tons and tons of threads and guides, yet it leaves me with a bunch of questions i am having trouble finding answers to.
First of all, this is the information i've managed to get from my Magic
SAPPHIRE PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H
HBOOT-1.33.0014 (SAPP10000)
CPLD-12
RADIO-3.22.23.18
Sep 2 2009, 17:42:56
It's bought in Denmark, however i bought it used, so i don't know what's happend to it in the past, yet as of what i've read and tried, i believe it's still as stock.
A bunch of questions
General
1. What is SPL?
2. What are the different types and differences of SPLs?
3. What is Radio?
4. What is a "Goldcard"?
5. In what part of the proces from stock ROM to a Hero ROM is the chance of bricking the phone?
Concering my phone
1. How to you get started upgrading a stock Magic with the standard ROM to a Hero ROM? (Do you flash SPL first, recovery first, or something third?)
2. I believe but not sure, that my current SPL is a "perfect" one, do i need one of these so-called "goldcards" to get a Hero ROM?
3. How great is the chance of bricking the phone with my specs and versions, and is there any way to minimize this chance?
I hope that someone will be able to help answering my possibly stupid questions, so i'll eventually be able to get a Hero ROM working on the dear magic without bricking it.
Thanks in advance.
I am not sure if this is posted in the correct section, if not, please forgive me.
Some of these questions can be answered in the sapphire wiki, which is in the sticky at the top of this sub forum.
You can only brick your phone (completely recoverable) from screwing up when flashing your spl or flashing the wrong spl

The only thing you need to remember from the settings is 32A. Never flash anything that doesn't say it's for 32A (not entirely correct, but safe bet ;-)).
The first thing you need is to root and install a recovery, I recommend AmonRA recovery. I never flashed SPL or radio, you can install almost all ROMs without flashing radio/SPL.
now more in detail on your questions:
1. SPL (or HBOOT) is the "Second Program Loader". Flashing this incorrectly can brick your phone, so don't do it, and you're normally safe.
2. stay with stock ;-) I only flashed an engineering SPL just last week, but was flashing almost daily ROMs. I still don't see the advantage of flashing a different SPL
3. The radio is the firmware of the 'radio' chip in your mobile. Also not safe to change for beginners.
4. Not sure, it is used for rooting some devices it seems, or to bring bricked devices back from the dead. If you need to know more, you're in trouble ;-)
5. Stay away from flashing radio/SPL and you won't brick your phone (although sometimes you need to know some 'trick' to get the phone back in useable state ;-))
how:
1. root and install a custom recovery. From the recovery you can do nifty things: mount USB, wipe, flash, make a backup, restore
2. MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP!!! With that, you can always go back to your previous state (providing you didn't brick the device)
3. take one of the 32A ports of Hero, never a ROM that is made for the Hero itself (partition layout is different, and some hardware too). I recommend my-hero 2.0.5. It works well, is made for the 32A, and safe to flash.
You can find more details on those steps in the forum, but I hope some of it has become more clear.

Thanks alot for your answers! It was helpfull. However you say that i don't have to flash a new SPL, are you sure about that? I believe i've read somewhere i'd have to flash a new one in order to get root access because i have a perfect SPL - please correct me if i am wrong
You really don't need to flash SPL (unless for cursorsense). You DO need to flash recovery, this makes everything a lot easier.
ah, you have a 'perfect' SPL, sorry, missed that part. I don't have that, so I didn't need to flash SPL at all to enjoy custom ROMs.
Can't help you with that then, search more info I'd say!
The information you provided did help indeed.
However i found out how to make a goldcard, now i just need to know if i found the right SPL to flash.
Would this be the right one for me?

Hi everyone,
Been trying to root my phone since yesterday and had a bit of trouble. Now it seems that the SPL I have is a perfected one as I am unable to use fastboot for recovery.img (not allow error).
This is what I have:
Sapphire PVT 32A Ship S-ON H
1.76.0010 (SAPP50000)
CPLD 12
Radio 6.35.10.18
Is there a way to change this SPL at this time? I know there are ways for older ones but I wasn't sure that I should be changing to an older SPL (and risk bricking my phone) so I thought I'd ask first!
Any advice/input greatly appreciated.

Yeah that's a perfected SPL. I assume Recovery Flasher doesnt work? If you can't use Recovery Flasher then you are out of luck until someone can break into those phones.
Keep in mind the hero recovery is the only one that works with the 6.x Radio.
Arrrgh!!! I'm tempted to go to the Rogers store and exchange my Magic for another one (without the upgrade on it). I still have 8 days to do so according to Rogers policy...
chances are you'd get another with perfected spl.
This is how i got mine working from perfected spl->custom rom
If you want a different rom, dont follow the last 2 links, and find whatever you want to flash, after the first 2 links you will have a non-perfected spl and be able to flash whatever your heart desires.
There are easier ways to do this if you are not running windows 7. Apparently theres a way using htc sync, but i cant get it working, even with all of the fixes that people have claimed work for them

Thanks, I'll give that a try. I'm actually using Windows 7 so I'll have to do it that way.
Does it matter that my SPL is 1.76.0010 rather than 1.33.0010?
umm.
Actually im not 100% sure. Kuz i know messing with the radio and spls can be problematic if you flash them incorrectly... I personally would go straight to flashing These instead of going to 1.33.2007
maybe wait for someone more experienced to comment, kuz radio and spl being flashed wrong will result in a brick

Since they still use 1.5 (yet they claim they care about security, lol) RecFlash works a charm.
Install RecFlash, slash RA's Recovery, then use it to flash the ROM.

Any advice/input greatly appreciated.

me and asiano both did the same thing, just follow this here procedure:
http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/29/how-to-root-the-htc-magic-in-one-click/
I've tried that method with the new rogers update (SPL 1.76.0010), and it doesn't seem to work for me. The flashrec website even states it doesn't work with firmware released after November '09. Are you sure you had the new update when you rooted using this method?

yes but i think you don't have a perfected spl, we are not able to root because our spl version is 1.76.0010... can you confirm you got the same?
I have an updated Rogers ROM and Goldcard will not work with the current ENG SPL. Outdated
Same with me. Stuck on this ROM. I think whomever says they were able to get root with 1 click method or flashing the Engineering SPL did not have the same setup as those of us who are stuck. I've devoted about 20 hours so far to getting root again. None of the methods are working, and yes I'm following the directions to the letter. This is really starting to piss me off.
Is there anyone working on trying to root this new Rogers update ROM? It seems like most of the people who do this stuff have moved on to the Droid and N1. Do we need to start a fund to entice one of the people who rooted the other ROMs to come back and revisit Rogers 1.5 Sense? I'd throw $10 US into the pot.
Any other ideas?
im in!
10$ US, im in!
I'm in for $10
God I hate Canadian cell providers.
Can the phone still be unlocked to use on a different carrier though??
10$
Totally in. 10 bucks is a small price to pay for a rooted phone.
I have a HTC Magic from Rogers Wireless and I'm trying to flash a new Radio onto it. Fastboot will send the new radio over to the phone but when it attempts to write it the screen on the phone will go blank with some funky lines running down it. Even leaving it for 20min, the radio still not written. Phone is OK after pulling the battery but sill on existing Radio
Here are the specs on my phone
Sapphire PVT 32A
SPL 1.76.2007
Radio 3.22.20.17
Recovery RA-sapphire-v1.6.2H
Rom CM 5.0.7 Test 3 with EBI1 Port
I'm trying to flash Radio 3.22.26.17 from the Rogers HTC Dream E911 update onto the phone so that Rogers will not cut off the data when the old radio is detected.
Thanks!!
Actually, how did you managed to install that SPL with that radio...
The SPL you are using is made for Radios 6.* not 3.*...
I ran the Rogers RUU from last summer then used flashrec to inslall cm recovery.
I used cm recovery to flash the 1-76-2007 SPL then I flashed RA recovery (recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.6.2H.img). Did a nandroid backup and then wiped & flashed the files necessary for CM.
If this incorrect what SPL should I be using, I can always revert back and start over again.
Thanks!!
You can probably use the steps here to solve your issue.

Blasphemy.
If you wish to link to a guide then link to a proper one - one by CursorDroid, not a copy of it. (now there are credits, but back at the day when it was written the author did not give credit to people he should have.)
Here it is :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=605239
You could also try the tool from my sig.

My apologies. I just happened across this, verified it worked and suggested it as a solution. I wasn't trying to cause any problems or dredge up any hard feelings. Just trying to help the OP solve his problem.
It does provide the solution to his issue, does it not? I agree, the people who dedicated their hard work should have been thanked properly, but at the time I linked there, the credits were up.
Sorry to offend.
Edit: I linked to this one as the OP indicated he wanted the original Rogers radio/spl.
ive done this because i made a mistake before
