AT&T Data not wanted... - General Questions and Answers

My wife and I have had AT&T for 3 years now. We both had crummy Sony z525a's until March of '09 when I bought a used Tilt 8925 on craigslist. We have a simple family plan with no data or texting so when I swapped my sim into the Tilt I used kaiser tweaks to prevent accidental use of 3G. Everything has been great for me since then, but now my wife's phone is dying. She'd love a tilt like mine, but from what I can tell she'd be automatically charged for data even buying the phone 2nd hand.
Question 1) Is that the case?
Question 2) If so, is there any work around, like fooling At&t into thinking she's still using the Sony?

I suggest you ask this over at Howard forums:
http://www.howardforums.com/
They have a lot of folks there who are very familiar with the plans etc.

Sprint HTC Mogul VS AT&T Tilt.

Hey all, Just wondering what some peoples opinion would be if they were in my situation.
I'm thinking of one phone or the other. No matter what I have to get them through a contract because of lack of money and I need a phone this week.
I'm leaning towards the HTC Mogul through sprint. For the sero plan's available. But when I read forums of unhappy Mogul owners, it makes me think I should just go with the updated and newer platform in the Tilt.
But the main problem I have with the tilt is the pricing of the plans. If I got the phone, internet is important to me. I don't think the 20MB data plans would be enough for someone using the Tilt daily would it? So I'd be forced to get the 39.99/monthly data plan, which is painful because I'd have to get the cheapest rollover plan possible just to afford the monthly bill. And of course that would mean I'd barely be able to use the actual phone. So that would suck.
But I'm afraid if I get the sprint plan I'm always going to regret not getting the Tilt because of poor performance and issues with the bad roms.
So for those that own either, is the Mogul that bad? Is the Tilt really that much of an improvement, or do they both have issues that will nag at you. If you could have either phone, 1 on the sero plan with a Mogul (49.00, unlmited night and weekend starting at 7, 1250 anytime minutes, unlimited data, and unlimited texting) vs AT&T tilt (39.99 450 anytime rollover, unlimited night and weekend starting at 9p.m., and the 39.99 unlimited data plan). Which one would you choose now, or in hindsight?
Is the tilt really worth it? Or should I stick with the mogul?
Anyone?
Love the Mogul and the SERO plan. Best thing I've ever done. I really enjoyed at the camp where everyone's GSM phones were searching for signal but I was roaming with full voice and EVDO data coverage. And with SERO it didn't cost anything extra.

It's very hard to look past how amazing the Sero plan is for a staving college student. That's for sure.
Has the mogul been reliable for you for the most part? And how is the network in terms of voice? Sprint wasn't always the best back in the day, has is it now?
go with the mogul trust. I've had the mogul since the day it first came out about 2 years ago and I love it. the features and programs for it are unlimted. u could do so much...download hacks...programs....templates and other useful features. not to mention with the new software updates that keep your mogul up to date and working even better than before. I personally prefer the mogul rather than the tilt because it is a hole lot cheaper and when it comes down to the date plan sprint all the way. besides the only real differences between the tilt and mogul is that the tilt can obviously tilt and may have a little better megapixle camera....but never the less, the mogul is a great PPC
I'm sure the OP has most likely made his decision in the nine months that have gone by since he started this thread.

HELP: Unlocked ATT compatible with Sprint?

Hello all,
I was just informed that my company will be transitioning to a corporate cellular plan and will be moving to Sprint. We will be receiving a Blackberry and I cringed as I have fallen in dire love with my ATT Tilt, yes, wife is a little jealous. We have a microsoft exchange server, so I can still get away with a WM6 phone, however I have a few questions and need to decide what to do by this FRIDAY! UGH!
If I can get this unlocked, can I use this on Sprint? Do they also use the sim card?
Thanks in advance.
Uh, no. Unlocking the phone would only allow you to use it with another GSM provider. Sprint and Verizon both use CDMA, so there is no way to use your Tilt on their networks.
Thank you very much for the information... today is a sad day for me. That is exactly what I was afraid of. It just isn't worth keeping the min plan with full data to maintain my phone. I have only had it since November so looks like I will have to get rid of it
Anyone have any Sprint suggestions?
First off LOL to your question. And second, take a look at the Sprint Mogul, as far as I can tell it's pretty much the same phone but not as cool. There is not Tilting of the screen and you'll have to do some fancy foot work to get the GPS running on it, the camera isn't 3mp but everything else is pretty much the same. If you look in the forum under Titan then you can do some research on it.
You can tell I'm devastated... I really am . My boss was scared to tell me cause I just go on and on about my new mistress, I mean phone. I just recently made the Treo Palm OS leap to HTC WM6 and haven't looked back. I was hoping that Sprint was GSM, but since CDMA, there is no popping a SIM out and putting another in, which means I will have to carry two phones or forward my personal to business, which then means no point in keeping this phone. I'll have to figure out if CDMA can use two phone numbers at once on one phone.
if you can then I would be really suprised. 2 phones make you look cooler, well if the other wasn't a black berry
Heres a suggestion being that I work for AT&T ANS Tech Support I get these calls alot. My suggestion is keep the Tilt. Ask your IT if they could give OUTLOOK WEB ACCESS that way you can set it up in the device client of the Tilt. The other option is ask them if they wouldn't mind forwarding your work email to another email address. Another option is that if you company will be using blackberries on the server as well. Call AT&T and get the connect feature for your phone that way you could still keep your Tilt. Palm OS sucks. Looks boring can't customize anything etc. Not to mention the bug in the phone that makes it Hotsync for no reason when it isn't even connected to the computer. Let me know what you think
Thanks for the suggestion, I currently have all those happening because I have the settings. The biggest change is I no loner get to expense my phone, they will be choosing the plan, they will be paying... hence why I don't want to have my $150+ cellphone bill become my personal cellphone. They will no longer be reimburisng like before. So my hope was I could reuse this phone, but that thought has been killed off.
Feel bad for me... feel very bad for me. :lmao:
The real question is why are they switching to sprint. From what I've seen they've started to circle the drain. They had a major loss to subscribers and they had to shut down a bunch of stores. at&t and Verizon are the 2 real competitors. I wouldn't be shocked if Sprint sold to Verizon soon and t-mobile USA sold to at&t.
So in the end they're switching to Sprint... Go with the Touch or the Mogul (which is basically the 8525).
umm idk if its cdma or not but the samsung f700 is AMAZING

I wish T-Mo sold to AT&T. I need 3G! Put in my friends sim from his iPhone and played with HSDPA and he wanted to trade phones immediately. I thought EVDO was fast when I had Sprint.
I thought Tmobile didn't have 3G just Edge
Unfortunately, it was not my decision... and I would agree, I am not thrilled, but someone in our corp. office was sold a bill of sale on this idea. What I can't believe is that they are going to pay the licensing on each BB, when the Microsoft push is free! Oh well.... I still continue to cry over spilled milk.
Rquinn, thanks for the 411 on their network speed, I got some clarification and we will have their data plan, so that is good to know.
Chumley, Rquinn was saying he wishes they would sell to ATT so he could get 3G

HTC Fuze on T-Mobile

Hello,
I am very interested in purchasing an HTC Fuze and using it on T-Mobile. Is any one currently doing this? Can you please give me your feedback.
Also, what are the unlock solutions for the HTC Fuze from AT&T. I know I can just call then in and ask for a code but is there another way? Also is there any lock on flashing ROM's?
Where is the cheapest place to buy a Fuze without a contract? Right now I have a deal for $375. Should I jump upon this?
Thanks in advanced
HTC Fuze and using it on T-Mobile, you must have the subsidy unlock code. Even after you unlock it, you still could not enjoy the 3G (assume you're in t-mob 3G coverage) because i lack of 1700 MHz band. Unlock code you can get it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=426609 I don't think at&t gonna give it out for non-subcriber. You may want to try your luck, then.
Flashing ROMs different than att, you must have your phone in super CID status. Refer to the link above.
$375 w/o contract and still whinning? Could you please disclose that source? I want to get some more.
I am currently with T-Mo and using a Touch Pro. So long as you can live with EDGE speeds you should have no problems. I went to a local wireless reseller to get my phone unlocked. Once it was I lodaded the Elite ROM. I have been using that for about two weeks now and I haven't had any problems. So far the only big issue I have is the "stylus issue". I'm hesitant to inquire about a replacement as the GPS along with everything else works great.
I just wanted to toss in my experience. I purchased an unlocked AT&T Fuze and am using it on T-Mobile. I got sick of waiting around for a decent Windows Mobile device to replace my Dash. I was able to get it for ~$420.
So far so good. I've heard that my voice sounds a bit odd, semi robotic. I'm not sure if that is a problem with the mic or what is going on, but I've ordered a Jawbone 2 so I'm not really worried about it.
EDGE is EDGE, it'll do for now until T-Mobile will get their act together and release a decent device, the G1 just won't cut it.
If you have other questions feel free to ask.
J.
How and where can I get it unlocked?
Is the ROM locked too from changing ROMs?
look at the link in the 2nd post
Wow,
sorry I didn't even see that whole sentence. I think I'll be purchasing an unbranded HTC Touch PRO anyways.
Thanks a lot for your help
I have an unlocked version that was purchased in Germany from the guy I bought it from. I may have paid a bit, but unlocked phones are usually much more expensive. The version I have has the second camera. Anyway...I'm using it on T-Mobile and it's working well. I did put the latest AT&T radio on it and it seems to have better signal. As for 3G.....well..T-Mobile only has 1 tower in my area so it'll be a while before 3G makes it here. The owners manual stated that to use 3G your sim card must be a 3G enabled sim card. I would think that you could use 3G if you have one of these cards and are in a 3G network. I could be wrong.... I hope it'll work!

I have a t-mobile data plan, do I cancel that but can still use EDGE or do I keep that on to USE EDGE TOO? And how do I USE EDGE FOR IT?
Hi all, I am also on Tmobile with a fuze. I unlocked it myself with the help of a purchased unlocker from this forum (thx). I have been running ROMeOs and 1.11 radio I believe. I was wondering about the new att radio on the tmobile network. Does it drain the battery faster? That is what I have read. I love the fuze and being able to actually do something with it besides the [email protected] wing that tmobile released. I am happy that they will be releasing a touch pro 2 release soon but that will be 6 months or more. I got tired of waiting also.
Lets keep this thread going and make the touch pro really usable on tmobile!
As far as having a dataplan on tmobile, I dont use one. I just use tzones, which still gives me a slow data connection, but only costs me 5.99 a month. Better alternative from $25. Edge is the only thing that the touch pro/fuze will be able to use on the tmobile network since it lacks the 1700mhz that tmobile has choosen for 3g.... kinda sucks.. but that is life.
Check blownfuze.org too. great site for the newb fuze user.
I purchased mine already unlocked for $300.00 from a guy looking to get an I-Phone ( what an idiot ). He said it was only 1 month old and it was and still is in mint condition.
The rom I'm using is in my sig, about to upgrade to his newest version RRE 5.8. Radio is 1.02.25.32 and I haven't had any problems what so ever.
I love it.
The skinny
you can get a branded one and buy it w/o a contract and ATT customer care HAS TO give you the unlock code. May take a couple of days but they will do it. If they say no then ask for a supervisor. As long as you paid full price they can't deny you the unlock code. I used to do contract work for ATT as well as work for Tmo
t-mobile or ATT ?
I'm currently with t-mobile and get good reception everywhere. I don't plan on paying more to get 3G or any data plan. I just want to use wifi at work and home.
I want to buy the cheapest used HTC Fuze I can find as long as I can call someone get an unlock code and flash it to one of xda-portal's best firmware mods.
Other than 3G, is there any reason to choose ATT over T-mobile (since my current plan is cheaper than I can get at ATT) I do want to get all the functionality of an unbranded phone.
Overall cost locked vs unlocked
Are there any differences in the the physical structure of an AT&T vs. unlocked phone?
I need a new plan.... I can get a Fuze from Amazon for $150. The contract requires a data plan for 6 months which is 6 x 30 = 180. The data portion can be canceled after that without any penalties. In the long run I want the phone for wi-fi, not data. So the Amazon cost is $330 after 6 months. I can get a bit of interest on the money that sits in the savings account each month.
Unlocked Fuzes on eBay are going for $340-450 most of the time. Believe it or not, someone recently paid $909 + $10 shipping. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=280334270835
So if I need you need a new plan, it's cheaper to get a Fuze from Amazon and not wonder if the "New, unopened" eBay phone is really brand new. If there are other considerations please let me know so I can make an informed decision.
Just an FYI. If you have or get web2go the $9.99 data plan from TMobile, they fixed it to where it will not work on unlocked/non-TMobile phones. Mine and many others with this problem just occurred very recently.
I believe there are a few people that had found a work around or a temporary fix for this. But I just went ahead and purchased the $24.99 data plan so I won't have to worry if my internet will work or not when I need to use it.
If you can get an unlocked Fuze for a good price, jump on it. Flash you a custom rom and you will be very pleased. I know I am.

Really wish I woulda seen that before I put my order in with Amazon. From what I hear, Amazon's cellular division is not too keen on giving refunds.
I am on T-Mo (USA) and thinking of getting a fuse (unlocked) will i be unable to get 3G at all with this phone?
yeah no tmobile 3g with the fuze. but i have the tzones plan for $6 a month back when they still offered it and can use unlimited internet just fine.
yea ..i just ordered a scratched screen fuze for $200. i was hoping flashing the rohdium radio would give 3g but i read about that bricking the phone. so is it it ever gonna be possible?

Any luck with AT&T data plans not for smartphones?

Just wondering if you anybody has still be able to get passed AT&T's "smartphone" higher data rate.
I have an LG non smart phone that I am thinking about using to purchase the unlimited messaging and data plan for $30. Then swapping my sim back to my fuze.
But I dont know if AT&T has gotten wise to this or not.
yep they seem to catch ya quick now ....we signed up 3 weeks ago and got the unlimited data plan with our 2 pantech impacts ..then i bought a fuze a week later
and within 3 hours of turning on the fuze the nailed me and changed me over to the 2gb smartphone plan ...so unless someone knows a way around this looks like att gets to screw us some more
or if someone can figure out how to block the imei ..cause i think thats how they can tell
Just my experience but yesterday I had to go to the AT&T store to put the $30 data plan on my HTC Fuze. What happened was I put my sim card in my first gen iPhone so it activated the $15 data then I put my card back in my Fuze so for the last two months I had an iPhone plan running on the fuze and they never said anything but after about a week I stopped getting 3G service so I guess as the saying goes you get what you pay for. If you want to, try it but beware if anyone does have the $30 unlimited data plan if you even switch it off for a second you can't get it back good thing was that the iphone was a smartphone with unlimited data.
Signed up with AT&T years ago. Been staying with them contract free because I get the $15 medianet internet.
From what Ive seen, if you never call or contact AT&T, you're fine.
I have a Fuze and a unlocked Telstra Diamond, both with $15 a month medianet on our family plan.
Never been contacted about a change, and have been running on these phones for well over a year. (and on my phone, I frequently go around 5-10gb a month of data). Before these, we had a treo 750, and a palm centro on the medianet plan, and before that a Treo 650.
The 750 and up have all been considered "smartphones" yet Ive never been forced to upgrade.
I should note that I have never bought a phone through AT&T and all of these have been unlocked phones bought on ebay, and just switched out the sim.
As always YMMV.
Yeah IDK. When I swap in my sim card to the LG, AT&T online changes my device. Then when I put my sim back into my Fuze, it will pretty much instantly change it back on the website. Even if I go in and manually change it, it will revert right back my Fuze.
I just think it is a rip off that smartphones get charged more for the exact same network access.

[Q]I need some advice from someone who knows Verizon well (related to upgrades)

Hello,
I hope this is in the right place, I've only made a few posts on here, but I read this site daily. Thanks to everyone who contributes!
I have a quick question I googled around about and couldn't really find an answer too.
I am currently using a T-mobile galaxy S 3 on ST w/ an att sim, but I also have a line on my parents plan w/ an old kin two m feature phone that will be due for an upgrade in the spring. My parents firmly believe that smartphones and data plans are the devil...So we have a talk and text family plan w/ 4 feature phones on it. I am curious if there is any way that when the upgrade is available, I could use it to buy a smartphone(capable of unlock/gsm capabilities), and then continue to use my kin two on the plan.
Does upgrading to a smartphone, from a feature phone, require adding a dataplan to purchase the phone? If so can I add the data plan to a single line for a month, then remove it and switch back to the feature phone?
Sorry if my post doesn't really make sense, any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for your time!

You would add data and could take the phone off back to Kin 2. The problem is you would need to get a phone from VZW that is gsm capable. Their global offerings are lacking and in most cases are locked from using USA gsm signals. Checking newer phones' radios first would be a must.

Thanks!
Hey, thanks for the input, it's appreciated.
Since I just got this S3 in early Oct I will probably hold onto the upgrade till next fall when hopefully a new note or something else cool is released, (saying that it could be unlocked for GSM). If i am lucky there will be more Verizon 4g LTE phones out that can be unlocked for GSM in a year from now. I never really expected that you would be able to unlock Verizon CDMA phones for GSM, but a guy in my CompTIA A+ cert. class said that his Verizon S3 could be unlocked for gsm and it got me thinking.
It's kinda a long story, but what got me asking about this I originally wanted a note/ note 2.
In September another forum member and I found two galaxy notes for $300 on CL, and the one I picked had motherboard problems of course(Avoid CL phones/tabs please!) I was luckily able to sell the phone for parts on ebay for $150 easily, but I still lost a little money on the unlock code, zagg, and a new S-pen. After that I really just needed a dependable phone fast, and couldn't really gamble on something used, or wait on the US Note 2 release, so I settled on the S3, so here next fall after i've had the phone for about a year hopefully i'll be able to upgrade to something new. I have grown to really like my S3 though.
