If I could design my own phone... - General Questions and Answers

Maybe this phone exists somewhere but if so, I haven't found it - and not for lack of searching. It all started with a 2007 Shadow. I loved the slim size and slide-out form factor, could live with WinMo if I had to but hated the 2.0 mp camera and non-touch screen.
I've tried the Incite, the Kaiser and currently use a G1 for day to day but none of them made me as happy as my Shadow. Part of it's because if I need to make a call I don't like the touch screen dialer. Another factor is the Blackberry-like keyboard arrangement on the Shadow - I really liked it. (I could never master texting using the usual numeric keys.) It's too cumbersome to pop out the G1 or Tilt keyboard, especially dealing with stupid automated phone systems.
I like HTC phones a lot because of the community but am beginning to wonder if somewhere out there is a phone better suited for me. I'd like to stay in the Android fold but does anyone have any suggestions? Has to be GSM and unlockable because I use a weird local carrier, too, although I might consider going back to Sprint (gag) for the perfect phone.

The Palm Pre might suit you...although there is always more to get out your device when you are running WinMo or Android on an HTC device. WebOS is fantastic but you're stuck with what they give you.

I played with a Pre at a local kiosk and was impressed by how nice it was but not enough better than the G1 to go back to Sprint. Now if the GSM version becomes more affordable and available, maybe...
Thanks,
Terry - now if I could just do a camera transplant on a touch dual

It would be something like this:
VGA 4" screen
From factor like HTC Universal
2ghz processor
1gb RAM
Hardware keyboard
Slim nice design
Made by HTC
A mix of Universal, Rhodium and Leo
I guess I have to wait till 2011 or 2012...

I remember reading that android was working quite well on the HTC Nike a while back. That's the same slide format as the shadow.

It is so very close, but I'm spoiled by the ability to do bar code scanning with the G1. AFAIK, the 2.0 cameras can't do that - which is why I made the comment about the camera transplant. I guess I could look into the port a little closer to see if they made it work or not.

Android 1.5 on (Sprint) CMDA TP2?

Hi All,
New guy here, and I was thinking about putting Android 1.5 on the Sprint TP2, rather than WM 6.5. (Again, new here, so I'm assuming that, once this HSPL is released for the CMDA, it could work equally well for WM or Android.)
I'm wondering if anyone has tried Android on the TP2 at all and, if so, your thoughts and opinions on this unusual pursuit?
Thanks in advance!
Sorry: CDMA
Not CMDA. I'm a little out of league here.
Sprint is CDMA and it is possible for that to happen. However, you would need an experienced cooker and most guys here are windows mobile guys.
Android is just now starting to fully work on the vogue and has been in the works for quiet some time. The original Touch Pro is still unable to run it. IF the TP2 will see androind, it will be a long time before that happens. Why not wait for the Hero if you really want it?
To be honest, it's because I adore the full qwerty keyboard. I have a really difficult time on touch-screen keys. Additionally, engadget's review of Hero rated its hardware to be a little underpowered for Android. I'm simply sold on the Rhodium.
Your right on it being underpowered. The problem is, porting it to WinMo is hard since they have 2 completely different kernals.

Same reason I want the TP2. Never had WinMo device but that keyboard is the best I've seen on any Smartphone. I'd recommend putting a Sense UI theme on it, that's what I plan to do. Or PointSense Suite.

A new firmware version has reportedly solve most of the issues with sluggishness. More than likely, the sprint version will have this at launch. It should be nice and snapy. The only things keeping me from waiting for this over getting the TP2 are the lack of a keyboard, the screen size/resolution, and the fact that it might not support SERO. It's okay though because I haven't bought it yet and I'll still be in my 30 day time window if I want to return the TP2 and get a Hero.
I'm really wanting Android, but it just hasn't gotten to the specs I want yet. However, I have to say that the Sense UI on it is about the most amazing thing I've ever seen on a phone. I know they say it's coming to WiMo, but I'm just not confident it will be that fast or as good as the android version.
A lot of phones really dont get optimized right away. Its kinda sad cause it brings the value down. Like the Hero is a great phone, but I geuss you need a ROM update for it to be optimized better.
The TP2 is actually extremely optimized right out the box since it has the same specs as the original, but it is a lot faster.

I've been told by several Sprint reps that Everything Plus (the new SERO and the name I was told my SERO plan already has) can be used on the TP2 and that the price will remain the same for me since I'm grandfathered at that price. We'll see what happens when I get it tomorrow and try to activate it with my current plan.
I have android running on my vogue, with is probably the most advanced port currently. We still do not have functional bluetooth, GPS does not have all functionality, and a small number of us (seems to be the cdma folks) have problems with intermittently not having SMS and phone calls show up. It is a great port, but still not ready for heavy everyday use if your phone has to be 100% reliable; many people do use it as there primary OS.
Just trying to say that even on the vogue we are not "there" yet, it is likely very possible on the TP2, but will take modification of the kernel and other files to adapt to your hardware, and won't be perfect.
How about the latest 1.6 donut on TP2? 1.6 supports the display resolution!

it's a lot more than just resolution. dip into the multiple vogue android threads if you are compelled.
Man, I bet getting the memory map would help out the port a lot. Wish HTC would release that.

Are you talking about the $30 500 minute plan or the newer ESRP that is like $10 bucks cheaper than the normal plans? Either way, I know that the TP2 will work on it.
Donut!!
Supports CDMA and the higher resolutions... Please Devs work on this! I will pay money to have it! This will be the perfect combo of phone and OS. I hope this happens.
The biggest issue here is the bootloader. No one, that I am aware of, has modified a bootloader to allow the direct booting of Linux. Also, writing to the flash memory if I remember correctly was the other issue, but please do correct me if I am wrong on this aspect.

I agree COMPLETELY. Having spent some time with an iPhone, I have to say that onscreen keyboards, even in landscape mode, still suck.
Another thing I'd worry about with the Hero... not being able to install programs to a microSD card. I know that is an Android issue, not a Hero issue... if they could fix that, I might be able to get over the low resolution and lack of keyboard.
Where are they talking about putting Sense UI on Winmo 6.5?

HTC said that Sense is on its way to WinMo via TF3d. Nothing new really. If you see the TF3d 2.5/2.6 setups, they resemble it a lot. Obviously, there are things that can't be the same (the way widgets and icons on the "desktop" appear, etc) due to OS limitations, but the core technology is being put into WinMo.
Installing programs to SD card is coming in 1.6. So no worries there.
I totally wish the Touch Pro 2 could run Android. My girlfriend has the HTC g1 and I love the application market. It's really awesome.
The keyboard is the major awesome feature about this phone. I used to have an Instink which is now EXTINCT and I could not deal with the crappy on-screen keyboard. I actually broke it once because I hated it so much. I plan on shooting this one Record it in full glory and post it on youtube for other poor Instinct users.
I would pay for an Android conversion. Totally.

SHould i go for TouchPro2 ?

Hi i recenlty Sold my Iphone 3G to try a WM phone , and got the Touch HD ( since i'm a big fan of big screen s )
but after trying different Roms , i realized that the device is rather Slow ...
wanted to know if the TouchPro2 Performed faster and if anyone suggests that i should change to the Pro2 ? ( but i read in the spec of both of the Phone that their CPU and RAM are the same )
Thx in advance
yeah they are spec'd the same i believe. I found that after I ran the right ROM on my HD it felt like a completely different phone. If anything hold out for the Leo...its packing snapdragon(1GHz) and a bunch of HTC goodness.
So both TouchPro2 and Touch HD perform @ the same speed ?
528MHz
they both are running at about the same speed just optimized differently...you can find a bunch of Topaz and Rhodium styled ROM's out there
TP is a great device!
if you can change to the tp2 without it costing much i would do that because of the keyboard (I have touch hd), you will go down a bit on screen size whichw ill be a shame and I dont think tp2 has a 3.5 mm jack out which is just stupid but anyway yeah I would try the tp2 for the keyboard.
for speed I would first try out the topaz rom I havent found another rom that seems so speedy 100s of times better than stock. Having a speedy rom really makes you appreciate your phone a lot more.
u mean i can flash any topaz rom to the Blackstone and i'll have a more speedy phone ?
sorry i didnt mean topaz i ment topix
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=460640
its wm6.1 but its just great
IMHO, i dont think the tp 2 will perform any better than the HD. Of course the keyboard maybe useful, but the HD is thinner and sexier
If you can hold out for the Leo (i want one now!!!) but who knows when it will be released........
As for HD roms, obviously the newer roms (6.5 either 2.1 or 2.5) are beta, due to not being released by MS yet, hence some may have issues/bugs. But dont dispear, they are getting quicker and more stable. Try any newer ones from Dutty, NRGZ or Miri or if you want the very latest try the new build from PDAVIET.
They are all better than the current stock rom, I personally love the 2.5 has a couple of bugs, but we are getting there.
The TP2 is cool, but if U can wait then the Leo will be much cooler

although the leo dosent have a kepboard which is why i wont be getting it, I love my touch hd but ive had enough with a purely touch screen phone. I'm waiting on an android phone that has good processor capacitive screen (large high res) and keyboard or i might just get the nokia n900
maybe they will release a leo pro with a keyboard then I might consider it.
good luck, from what ive seen Android isnt taking off like everyone though it would. None of the carriers seem to keen on supporting it. Tho i did see a topic on PPC where they are dual booting WM phones and running Android on them
The Leo does look pretty sweet, but i agree, it needs a keyboard. It will have a capacitive touchscreen, and 3.5mm jack tho (along with the snapdragon processor) Just add a keyboard and we have ourselves a dam near perfect device. So long as its configured/optimized properly.
It kinda makes me sad, that they announced this after i got my TP2, but its bound to happen. As soon as they release the Leo (whenever that will be) couple months after, a new, better device will be announced. Thats the tech world for ya.
As for the Touch Pro 2, yea ive noticed it does lag sometimes. Tho i haven't installed any custom roms either, which may likely help it (to date, i don't know of any roms specifically for it). Im also a bit worried about bricking this thing while trying.

it's way too early to say they haven't taken off. The problem so far is that a good android device hasn't been released yet. The experia x3 looks nice similar specs to leo but a much better camera, still no keyboard though .
I have a Touch Pro. It's great.
If I was buying now, i'd buy a TP2.
Capacitive screen = DO NOT WANT (give me a stylus or give me death!)
If you're not into trying custom roms I found that even some of the tweaks or Registry Hacks would speed up the phone a bit. Personally I didn't like the Touch Flow and turned it all off in favor of just the plain WinMo look (modded a bit of course). Additionally I turned off the HTC Dialer Skin and used the WinMo dialer that was running on avg about 8m less in memory and was just as functional (minus the reject call w/ txt functionality).
Out of the box my phone had program memory usage up in 38-43% range. Now it's typically 21-28% and running much faster in my opinion.
Thanks everyone for ur time and answer.

I'm torn between WM and Android devices

I figure this is the best place to ask for advice.
I fell in love with HTC/keyboard phones when I got an unlocked mda (i'm on att) a few years back. They keyboard and ruggedness of the phones (they've outlasted a few drops here and there) had won me over, especially after using an n95 briefly a few years ago. I got an 8525, and now I'm on a tilt (8925). I've always upgraded roms and liked trying new things, so I tried something new about a week ago.
I went the Android (ion) on sd card route, and loved it (but tried to go nand and it never worked correctly). My battery seems to last forever now (where a week ago, before I started using android, my battery was dying at around 6 pm), the speed of everything (the phone dialer seems to be running at light speed compared to winmo) and the touchscreen responds so much better. Even with the occasional freeze and crashes, I haven't gone back to winmo (except on the occasional restart and re-running haret)
It's time for a phone upgrade. I (briefly) had a tp2, but it still felt slow in winmo 6.5. And seeing how android isn't as well developed on it as it is on the kaiser, I'm looking at other options.
I'd like to keep att 3g, and have native android, AND a hardware keyboard. Does this exist? If i gave up a keyboard (though i don't really want to since I text a bit and surf the web a bit as well), are the newer touchscreens good/fast enough? I was looking at the Hero, and the ion/magic (which seem to be almost the same, though I like the price of the ion/magic), but maybe you guys can help me out? I have to go the Ebay route, seeing as how I'm stuck on att for another year (long story short, gave upgrade to family member, who has since screwed me on their end of the bargain) so I guess that's another thing to keep in mind. Help?
Depending on how much you want to spend will Ddepend on your options right now the only official android device for att with a keyboard is the backup nd I personally think it is horrible. You could spend the $529 and get an att Nexus One, which is only touch screen but is fast enough to handle input well. Plus with the many touchscreen keyboards out now it is pretty easy to transition to touchscreen. I just did this whole post using the swype keyboard and it is pretty fast and accurate. if you can hold off then there are gonna be many new handsets comming. Plus flashing new roms for android is highly addictive lol.
I just got the htc hd2 . the device is fantastic. the software blows donkey d....
In my opinion windows mobile 6.5 feels undeveloped . I know i probably havent figured it all out yet but its what i see so far.
So here I sit trying to make the best of this and hoping someone ports android over to the hd2.
thats my two cents.
If you want Android, then the Nexus is Awesome, Fast, Slim, Cool, etc. Try one out at a store to see if it fit's
i was almost ready to switch then i bought an lg expo. it is so sweet and mega fast.
Trust me, on a screen the size of 3.5+, you can type faster on a touchscreen than on a hardware keyboard
Telus Milestone is your best bet. And yes, you will have to buy it from ebay or some unofficial store.
I was a big winmo fan but they are dragging in the upgrade department.
6.5 was a minimal upgrade at best and 7 is limited on the multi-tasking front.
My son has a Motorola Droid and I really like the OS.
I'm headed for a Xperia X10 with a snapdragon processor but only after it comes to the US to support our 3G band.
That could be tomorrow or a year from now knowing SE's inability to get a device to market on time.
I'd really like to go with the nexus with it's seemingly ginormous screen (though everything has a ginormous screen compared to my tilt 1), but the $560 price tag (after taxes on the site) is quite a bit much to stomach.
I might look at the milestone, but I'm a little weary of motorola's quality, the diminutive size of the keyboard, and @ their price i'd rather stick to a touch screen only telus hero or magic.
Maybe I just need to win the lottery or knock over a bank...

I'd definitely go with the Nexus (If funds can afford), you think that it is too much now, but it is worth it when you get it (or so I've been told by... everyone).
I would sell my soul for a Nexus One, but I already sold it to Google in exchange for an extra 70mb in Gmail, should've waited

From what I heard, AT&T's Backflip is ok. It's running Android as well as having a keyboard. The thing is that it's a Motorola. I believe this is Motorola's 2nd Android phone besides the Motorola Cliq (correct me if I'm wrong)

Then you heard wrong. Not only is the phone running the second worst layer of ui for Android (it runs MotoBlur, the worst is TouchWiz), it does not use Google Search, it can't use apps outside of the market, it's made by Motorola, and it has the weirdest design of a phone I've ever seen.
And I'm pretty sure it is Motorola's 3 or 4, not sure if the Devour came out before it (I know the Droid and Cliq did though).
Crackness, you sound exactly like me when it comes to looking for a phone. I am on AT&T so I want to keep that, I want speed and the hardware keyboard is a must for me, well I have a solution for you : Motorola Backflip
Yes the design is odd, but truthfully once you hold it in your hands, it actually does make sense. True the Backflip is on Android 1.5 because of the MotorBlur but they are coming out with an update soon. Otherwise the phone is amazing. Fast and keyboard is great. Trust me, it is definitely something you should look at.

What Phone should i get?

Hi,
I am currently an owner of a LG KS20(aka Corona) and i'm deciding to go for a new phone in the next 6 months. These are the minimal conditions the phone should have:
(Higher is more important) Like it should have 3.5mm jack, but Touchscreen is more important
-Touchscreen
-Wifi
-A shell like Sense or the Android screen
-Activesync through Wifi or 3G
-3.5mm Jack
-Speed(Currently a 400Mhz MSM7200 under WM6.5 and sometimes it's slow like crap.)
-Camera >3.2MP
-Bluetooth
-GPS would be nice, not really necessary(Does somebody know some good navigation programs that doesnt need an internet-connection?)
This is a list of the OS that is should be running, Higher is better
-Android
-WM
-Iphone OS
Some info 'bout me
-Hacking and modding is the name, i changed from WM6 to 6.5, other titanium Themes etc etc.
And last but not least, a couple of phones i've been thinking of.
Nexus one, Iphone 4,HD2,HD mini,Vodafone H1
Could you guys give some info on the pro's and Con's of the Android, WM, and Iphone Platform and some feedback on the listed phones?
That would be Swell
PS: When is the release-date of WM7 for Europe/the Netherlands? Are there other release-dates i should wait for?
Almost forgot ALL of the HTC Android phones are in the race...
If you have an other proposition, please name it
I'm currently eyeing the HTC Desire. Seems the most perfect phone out there. I'm just waiting to see if more information about the HTC Vision comes out.

Same here for HTC Desire. Not expensive compared to the others like SE X10 or Samsung Galaxy S. Has currently the best OS + Sense, and has almost everything I need (fits also your requirements above).
i see that the Desire has a 'optical trackball' what is it? Also, how is the Wifi experience?? with my KS20, connecting to a Accespoint is taking me over a minute. It sees the AP rightaway, but then is connects in 10sec., but that is very rare. Most of the time keeps connecting and if you don't do anything it will keep doing so until the battery has run out(so it cant connect, keeps connecting) and then you have to select an accespoint, cant connects and fails after 10sec, THEN you can select the desired AP and after 30sec. its finally connected to the internet.
Is the Musicplayer on android/Desire intuitive? easy to use like in the iPhone/iTouch?
Get anything HTC...I favor the Android Nexus One!
I find a phone ,it may meet your demands.
in the website everbuying.com.it may meet your demands.
If you dont want any headache get the Desire or HD2 because they are really fast (Desire a bit faster because of the OS, but i like WindowsMobile much more). Or the HTC EVO 4G...
You know what Iphone is just the best phone for your all requirments..
Try the 4th generation it is simply the awesome phone..
HTC Desire ticks all the boxes but if your not looking to upgrade for another 6 months then im sure something better will be along by then
Galaxy S, pretty much kicks ass every other Android phone on the market.
1Ghz Humminbird (faster than Snapdragon in HTCs) 4" super-amoled, 16gb internal memory, 512ram etc.

Hi,
I am currently an owner of a LG KS20(aka Corona) and i'm deciding to go for a new phone in the next 6 months.

Is it this one F910 WCDMA 3G Single Card Android 1.6 Wifi Java GPS Touch Screen Smart Phone
I found from everbuying, but it a little expensive.
I would get the HD2 or wait until the Fall when all the new Windows Phone 7 models come out. The HD2 is really cheap if you sign a contract.

Is the HD2 The best all around phone ever made?

I mean- it has the capabilities of 4G on TMO when released
dualboots android (perfectly stable and daily driver)
win mo 6.5 for buisness use/ more apps/ preference
top of the line specs... snapdragon, 4.3inch screen, dual led flash etc.
the only thing missing is an 8MP camera, but i would rather have a dualboot android than 3 more MPs.
This leads me to the question- is the HD2 the best all around phone out today?
Yes ....if it wasn't on t-mo

I bought one the day they debuted and it was a pile of crap I went through three of them and didn't get one that didn't freeze on boot at least every other time, or delete all my information every other day. So no I do not believe it is the best all around phone, I would say thats the nexus one personally
It not only let you boot Android and WM, coming soon will boot WP7 too!
So it will be the first and only device booting 3 OS and specs are same or even better than newer devices.
I say yes: Leo is one of the best HTC devices ever made!
Dont forget Ubuntu and now: MeeGo
that´s right thanks!
I believe it might be...I own an N1, G2, iphone 4, and soon to be Glacier and I use my HD2 the most...Android is now stable as ever...Gingerbread will be on it soon...this phone has been a monster since it dropped..!!

I love my HD2. Wouldn't trade it for any phone out right now. I still get questions about it.
Agreed (^_^)
I would agree too, which is why I'm finding it so difficult to upgrade and part with now.
The HTC HD7 or HTC Desire HD are my current next thoughts (hopefully this month too), but can't say I'm excited about either of them and hoping for something a little more special to come out by anyone really (of course leaning more towards HTC as I have done so for over 8 years now).
Easily my favorite phone ever which is non-Android.
I was actually thinking about picking an HD2 up for the hell of it to throw Android on since I'm getting sick of the size of my HTC Aria...but I may switch from AT&T to Spring to get an Evo or Evo2.
I'm one of those guys who won't use a phone without a physical keyboard. I can't get used to screen-typing, I just don't like the feel of it. If the HD2 had a Pro variant with a slide-out, I'd own it already. I recognize it's an awesome phone though, just not for me.

+1. If there was a pro-version THEN it would be THE best phone ever to-date. I consider myself a VERY heavy user and the ROM I have seems to work like a charm.
The only reason I have to take the battery out is to turn it off as the on/off button has been reprogrammed!
Sadly, switching to a Dell Venue in two weeks... oh for the keyboard.
(Orb, AFAIK - and I could be wrong! - WinPho7 requires hardware mods for it to work on a HD2 so don't expect it)

So you're going the W7P route? The Dell Venue looks good, but not please with the 3.5mm jack on top (like silly iPhone thingys) and the keyboard looks like old school keyboards being far to small to actually use. Hmm... decisions... decisions?!

The jack on top means that when you dock it (which I'm guessing you will be able to) into a 3rd party desktop cradle you will still be able to listen to music - unlike my HD2's docks!
Don't know how the keys will feel.... I can always send it back if they are bad
I had a Rhodium before and must say I´m a real keyboard device person but got tired of the slowness of Rhodium, then got Leo and I´m still missing a real kb but in terms of speed there is no comparative.

I moved to T-Mo almost two weeks ago over from VZW. I had T-Mo before but coverage was far less back then.
I picked up the HD2 and really liked it but missed Android. I had several failed attempts to get Android to run. I then decided to separate my work and personal line with two phones so I grabbed the G2.
Now I re-flashed my HD2 to a Mega Leo Rom, was an Energy ROM. Then I made a second attempt at Android on a fresh reformatted sd and put on Mdeejay EVo Sense rom.
I was amazed how slick Android boots on HD2. Of Course there has been some bumps with a Flaky Data connection and it will not install Angry Birds from the Market. I was drawn to the HD2 because I had a Droid X and the larger screen was the attraction.
In the end the HD2 is a great device with all the options and have a Snapdragon processor makes it available to compete with current phones.
Android or W7P?

That maybe, but I've never used mine for playing music through a dock, I usually make my own custom docks and prefer to have the ability to pick up my phone from out of my pocket, with it being the right way up already and the jack underneath for easy usage generally, especially whilst seated on the TfL for example.
However, I'd image this is a 50/50 point, where half would prefer the jack on the bottom and vice versa.
CPW are bugging me weekly to upgrade to anything fro free and with just a 12 month contract, but stuck in what to go for. I'm only going to keep the phone for 3-4 months too and probably give it to my other half to use (whose a heavy Outlook user) so thinking a W7P, but I know she'd prefer Android with the newer HTC sense. I'm also not impressed enough with the Desire HD, so wondering if I should be waiting.
I just bought a Sony LiveView to go with an Android 2.0+ and can't find out if it will work with a W7P at all (too early to ask I guess), so thinking to go with a Desire HD with the Sony LiveView until a newer handset comes out that is much better (probably in a couple of months) and give the above to my Mrs to use, maybe?
I think I read that Android 3.0 (Gingerbread) needs 1.5Ghz to run well and in general smartphones are still some months away from that official speed.
best non android and android phone ever ... its the BEST FONE EVAAA !!

After 3 phones, the statistical odds are is that you're the one with the manufacturing defect.
