The maps that Brut.all and TAPP put together over in the G1/dream dev forum should allow for this and work properly.
I haven't tested it (as I have no personal need) ... but it *should* work on N1.
~enom~
It does work!
Downloaded Nav Launcher
Remove MAPS via ADB
Reboot
Launch NAV LAUNCHER
install MAPS from Nav Launcher prompt
Off you go!
What? Have you gotten google navigation to work without data by preloading it? I am in certain need of this function, so please let me know if this is possible.
yep.
Follow my steps above and enjoy Google Nav outside the US!!
Do all the functions work now or is it still half broken?
So are the no voice and no text problems still there? (that would render it useless...)
Also, is the Google Maps app downloaded from Nav Launcher the same as the one preinstalled on the Nexus (ie with the Labs features like compass, terrain, layer button and scale bar)? I think it's version 3.3.1.
IT looks like the Maps still have all the layers....etc.
Also I did a quick 3 mile journey yesterday and voice was working fine along with rerouting.
However one thing I didn't check was the next turning function i.e. shows on screen that i need to turn left next.
I'll check it today, but it is FULLY usable.
Latitude and everything works.
can u pls help us with a link? can´t find the right one
sorry. but does it required for the device to be root? and what is adb?
You need root in order to remove the existing maps app however on the G1 it was possible to simply install this one alongside if you didn't have root. Not sure that's the same for the nexus but I don't see why not.
ADB is Android Debug Bridge and essentially lets you connect your phone to your computer via USB (BUT NOT mount the memory card) and then execute commands on it.
You don't need to use it for this as if you have root, Nav Launcher will uninstall the old one for you and if you don't, you can't uninstall the old one anyway (which is all adb is used for in this instance).
EDIT: By the way, I just installed this on my rooted Nexus (i'm in the UK) and it worked perfectly, even integrates with Car Home correctly! I uninstalled with ADB first cos I forgot Nav Launcher will do this for you, then installed Nav Launcher from the market. Simple and quick and all fully working!

Hi guys,
I'll be going to Spain in August, and will be taking my phone with me. I will be using it with airplane mode on though (I'm taking it as a camera, as my actual camera is worse than the X10's)
I've been looking around for caching Google maps, and found that the Brut mod of Google maps has this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=630887
I was just wondering if there is anyone who already has cached maps for Spain (more accurately, Valencia) that they could host somewhere.
I know its hardly likely, but worth asking!
If not then I will be browsing a lot of Spain tonight to save the maps to cache so I can use them later. (and maybe post them somewhere if anyone else needs them)
Cheers
it says you need a rooted phone.......let me know if this works for you.......and sry i can't help...

The only bit that needs root is the uninstall of the existing Google Maps.
I can confirm that it does work on a non-rooted handset, I installed the apk using Astro without problems and now run the Brut version alongside Google Maps
And don't worry about it... it was a long shot anyway
this is pretty cool..
sorry i can't help i'm still new to android
but does this mean you can use google maps without incurring data (offline)?
i have an x10 and i am too looking for good pre loaded maps for navigation (i don't have a data plan)

Sort of, yes.
It will only save them to your cache once you have viewed them.
So if you need maps for Scotland, you need to have already viewed Scotland's maps on your phone, for each level of zoom you want to use them in.
Looking at the original thread, it looks like they will be adding a download function, so you can do exactly as you want, (and I do) Download on PC > move to phone > use Google maps without using data/in airplane mode/where you have no signal etc
I can't really answer your question. But did you check out MapDroyd? It lets you download and view your location on maps of entire countries. You can't search or get directions, but the maps contain details such as street names.

Thanks man, this could be exactly what I need... I'll try it locally first test locations etc (one comment said his location was out) but I can still read a map if all else fails
EDIT: It did work, but for the areas of Spain I need are not detailed enough. Cities seem to be OK and rather detailed, but villages (Bunol being the one I need) have nothing at all... just the main roads around the outside.
I will look to save the maps in Brut for the detail...
Try andnav2.
You can download the map files over at this " http://wiki.andnav.org/index.php/List_Of_MapTilePacks/ " link
I hope that you will enjoy your trip to Spain ^^
if you use the brut hack
you now have access to the maps offline, but will there still be navigation or does navigation still require you to have a data plan?

Yea, that is the main problem... it takes ages, especially to make sure there are no missing gaps.
Thing is, once they are saved it is amazingly smooth to load between zoom levels.
It would be nice if there was an option to download all tiles from a set area to cache...
I think they are working on an update to allow this, but until then I will have to slowly save them to my cache manually
do you know anything about getting directions?
if i want to get directions, do i have to cache the route like i do with the maps?

You don't HAVE to... I believe (but may be wrong) that google maps will temporarily cache a route's map tiles for a journey you have selected. If you go off route, normal Google maps would connect to to 3g to get the new map tiles.
I haven't tried the navigation feature with just cache tiles though, so I don't know if you can use it purely off line

I just couldn't get the stock vlingo app working with my bluetooth when the screen is locked. Anyway, I've been searching and finally found the google voicedialer.apk that has worked so great for me on my old i9000 that works with the i727's ICS.
I got rid of the vlingo voice command and pushed this apk into /system/app. Cleared cache, rebooted and now I can make calls from my bluetooth with the screen locked.
I also installed google voice search from play store. Not sure if that's required but most likely it is.
It's attached if anyone wants it.
Thank you
I was looking for it, and you just shared, a really nice one.

This is what i was looking for nice and simple.
Vlingo is a battery hog!
Thanks...
Wing
It's great isn't it? I use it everyday with my bluetooth headset. I got this from one of the many ICS system/app dumps I downloaded and this was the only one that worked for me.
So many thanks!
This might be just what I am looking for!
I am a noob when it comes to Android. Could you please post detailed instructions?
Many thanks!
-GoJ
GoJ,
There's a few different ways but you first need to be rooted. Use Titanium Backup to remove vlingo (since this app may conflict with voicedialer). Backup vlingo in case you want to go back to it. Then you could use an app like Root Explorer or something similar to copy and paste the voicedialer.apk into /system/app. Clear dalvik cache (you can use TiBu for this as well or go into CWM) and reboot.
Hope that helps.
I downloaded this as well as several other versions of it and all i can get out of it is fore close. It activates, i speak, and it recognizes the contact, says its dialing and then bam fc and sometimes my phone locks up. Any suggestions? I tried clearing davlick and cache.
Thanks

Not sure if this version works, try it and let us know. I had a different version I was using for GB but it didn't work for ICS. I may have deleted it already but I'll see if I still have it.

Hi,
I do not see the file voicedialer.apk i the zip file that you attached. Pardonmy ignorance. Also, can you provide a link for a root explorer application? My HTC One X doesnt let the application enter root.
Thanks.
This maybe was discussed somewhere else, but I didn't see a thread on it so figured I'd start one.
I've installed Google Now on my rig running full stock (rooted) rom and it's running fine. I did get some network error messages at first, but I assumed it was a result of the permission requests it was tossing at me. Once I allowed the permissions, things seemed to work just fine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749045
FYI - Just read that to get the full benefit of google now you must have web history and location history enabled. It'll work without it, but won't provide its full benefit without it.
That said, I guess I won't really be using it much. A choice y'all will have to make. Here's the link:

Is voice working for you and did it break svoice when u double tap home? Thanks for the info
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
Voice did not work for me.
Double tap of home gave you the option to choose s voice or search. I defaulted to search and when I double clicked home nothing happened.
I kept getting network errors even though I have both location and search history enabled. I could get weather and Olympic results quickly but when I searched for say "galaxy S3 news" it would sit there loading. I reverted back to stock search.
How to revert: uninstall velvet. Rename the apk for Google quick search. No reboot required.
My phone is verizon stock rooted with noxious ninjas script.
Voice didn't work for me either. One note: don't "install" velvet.apk, push it to system/app instead.
Also, for some reason it kept telling me units in SI instead of US. I reverted because I like voice search. Didn't try disabling the S Voice stuff which I saw may help.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
There are several things that don't work for me.
As previously mentioned, voice searching is broken.
On my xoom the Google now app displays card such as weather, traffic, and sports scores when I open it without doing any searches. This function does not work.
Also, I get notifications from Google now on the xoom. The app is integrated in the os. None of this works on the s3.
Pretty much all you will get is a replacement of the current search app that will display cards for some results using text input only. It is not worth it to switch right now. If you are curious about how Google now works, just search for demo videos.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
it's now fully functional (including voice). there's another post floating around with instructions.
thanks for sharing this! everything works fine!
Can someone point me in the direction of the fully working version? I installed yesterday and there were a bunch of problems.
Here's the "fully" working version:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29756226&postcount=2856
I say "fully" because at least for me, nothing relating to the calendar works. Doesn't see my existing appointments, can't add new ones. Voice search works fine.
So I got it installed on my Verizon S3.
I don't see a Now app in my drawer but do get it when I press the home screen mic button and can voice search and all of that works well. Set an alarm etc.
I don't see any cards though and I don't have google now settings in the google search app to change from metric etc. I flashed M6 - Mikeyxda's version 6 online/offline. I didn't install anything else. Did I miss something?
Also double clicking the home button now brings up the voice dialer, how can that be changed?
Thanks in advance!

Cool, thanks. I am concerned that I don't get the settings to change from metric in the search app too.
I realize though I should be patient and wait for google to "award" me cards and then I might get the weather settings I am looking for.
Voice Dialer is messed up
I installed Google Now and the search works fine. However, when I initiate the voice dialer via my BT headset, I hear very fast, unintelligible gibberish. When I say "Call Bill Johnson" it returns totally inaccurate results and the voice is at 4X speed. S Voice, while somewhat inaccurate, worked 80-90% of the time via BT.
Does anyone else who has done this on their S3 have a working BT initiated voice dialer?
Where are my cards!

So I guess it's been 4 or 5 days since I flashed M6 - Mikeyxda's version 6 and I still don't have any cards. I have been using Now daily to search for weather updates and sports scores from my main teams and no cards every show up when I open the app from the blue google icon. I have never seen anything in the app actually say Google Now, I just get the red mic to ask the question.
Did I miss something or maybe have a bad install? Any suggestions to try?

Figured my problem out. It was because I have a google apps (for business) account. I had to enable at settled in my domain management to permit google now for my users (aka me).
I then cleared the Google Search Apps data and cashe and reopened it and got the welcome to Google Now setup screen.

It depends on which recovery your using if it acts right with it...if you flash it and it dont show up then you have to manually install it which the instructions on how to do so is in that OP

Good evening!
If you're reading this, then you for sure know what Spotify is. We all love listening to music and, ugh, that's the synonym of Spotify!
Unfortunately, this work could be used for two fully opposite reasons, one of which is against the XDA rules, so I had no other choice but to close this thread (and remove links). I hope you understand me and sorry for the inconvenience.
Feel free to read the history below. It was a fun ride!
Time ago, the app landed on our lovely Android platform for both tablets and phones and honestly who wasn't excited?
Soon after, forced shuffle mode and limited number of skips were also introduced and I agree that there must be a reason to purchase Premium after all. Luckily, this restriction was not enabled on tablets, but a problem that appears is that far from all tablets are detected as ones - mainly the "smaller" ones. This [bug/miss-code] activates the restriction on your tablet, and as a fix was needed from either side, here was my solution.
This mod was created for all those "small tablets" that are incorrectly recognized so that you can use Spotify the way it was meant to be used.

The signature/private hash (or not) of this app was not matching the original one Spotify had registered on Facebook. Absolutely understandable since this was a modified version.

MEGA is never down, it only needs the app for android if you want to download from phone. That's the reason I personally won't mirror.
About installing, you need to have "Unknown sources" enabled in your Security settings. Then just open the APK and install it as normal. If you still can't figure it out check YouTube for thousands of tutorials.

OP I could possibly kiss you all day and it wouldn't be enough. Worked like a charm.
Also the server seemed to be down only in parts around the world. So anyone being unable to connect simply use a VPN. Works perfectly with a VPN.
Though it is currently up again.
Op finally I got it downloaded. Thanks so much but I have a question. Is it possible for me to download for offline for free with this mod?

Absolutely not. I am not "hacking" Spotify and making it Premium-free and that will never be my aim. I am just making it possible to run in tablet mode on smaller tables.
Works like a charm, thank you
Logged-in with facebook, why does the op state it's not working
Here is an Excel spreadsheet that I made with all packages from the EVR-L29 and how to remove them without root. Each package name is listed along with the description of each package (if applicable) and whether or not each package is safe to remove. Use your own common sense on removal of some of these. Obviously if you want the stock dialer and contacts then don't remove the Android Dialer & Contacts packages. You need ADB & Fastboot extracted to a folder on your PC and you have to open up a command prompt in that folder.

I don't use the Facebook app nor do I screen share on Facebook so I really can't be of much help. Maybe there is someone else here who knows the reason why it's not working? The only thing I can tell you is make sure all of the permissions for Facebook are checked under "Special Access" in settings/apps/apps/3 dots at the top right, Special access.
Excellent list. I kinda, ' winged it on the AL-00 but this will help for next time. I'm assuming there was more junk on the Chinese version.
Sent from my HWEVR using XDA Labs

Yeah there are some more on the Chinese version but a lot of them can be removed without penalty. I'm hoping to eventually buy an AL00 version as well so I can play around with rebranding. I wouldn't mind having one of each to help with development.
Removing the stock dialer is a bad idea. It can mess with emergency calling. I don't recommend you do that.

Removing the stock dialer is optional. I always remove it and use Google Dialer and have no issues.

Thanks bro. it worked
Thank you! Uninstalled annoying facebook stuff and more importantly - Huawei's stock music app. Everytime I connect to my car, it auto launches and I resorted to denying it my storage access, but having it completely gone feels better.
A quick question - will a factory reset return all these removed apps?
Cheers!

Yes it will, it's in the last line in the description in the OP.
Great list, this is super helpful!
EDIT, just a word of warning, I did a few of the things in green, nothing that I thought was system related, mostly cleaning up Huawei apps.
Phone no longer boots. Had to factory reset..

I removed every single thing in green and also about 10 more apps and have no issues. Do you have the Chinese or Global version? I can't remember. Make sure you don't remove Huawei Updater (HWOuc)

I'm on the Global version. What's also interesting is that after a factory reset I have some menus and things that are different. Even though I am supposedly on the same build.
For example when you do the recent tasks, it used to show me all the apps running in a left to right scroll-able list. Currently its now an top to bottom list. Not sure I care either way, but it's interesting that its different.

Same thing happened to me, did you get the original recents (horizontal) back?
I'm guessing it has something to do with the Huawei launcher being removed. I had the same happened after removing it then switching to Apex.

Removing the stock launcher will change the recents to the old style. It was the same on my OnePlus 6.
