I just got my Samsung spica, with Android 1.5 Cupcake. I have been using winmo for a long time from HTC tytn to my last one is winmo 6.5 on Xperia X1.
Android is very different, I have seen so many videos and heard so much about it that I thought I know almost all of it. When I got the Spica and the first thing that I did was to download taskiller, I read about if before that this could free up the rams. But what I didn't understand that unlike winmo, taskiller actually kills a task, since there is NO WAY to close a task. There are no close button at all (is it me or that's just stupid?). Then I thought I would get a battery percentage app. Apparently you have to pay for all of them!! I have to pay for a basic app to monitor battery % (should have been added in the operating sys).
Then I started playing with the games, there are lot of games to try out. Some of them are free too. Spica has a 800Mhz processor so I tried the Speed forge demo, it was great.
Now I thought I would check the GPS, so I opened the google map. Wow it was fast to find my location! Then I thought I would try to find the local bus schedule from the map. In my Xperia X1, when I see a bus stop, I could just click on it and it would give the bus schedule (I am in montreal). In spica I tried to tap on a bus stop, it didn't work. I realized that its because the google map in it might be a old one. What a disappointment!
The final disappointment was when I tried to save an app in my SD card. I have a 6GB data plan, so I was download a lot of apps, then I thought I will move them to my SD card, apparently there is no way to do that. I mean come on!!! Later learned that they are working on it.
So it is clear that you need to have huge ROM (and RAM). Xperia X10 should have 1GB ROM, I think I should wait for it. Or should I get Desire instead as it has 512MB RAM? Or should I find a rootable Android phone? Or should I just wait for WP7?
This is so confusing now....
There are free battery apps, I don't see why you couldn't find one. I believe I use Battery Lite.
There's a neat task killer called osTask that give a UI for killing tasks, similar to the WebOS PalmPre, so you control task killing rather than auto.
I wouldn't be surprised if they update google maps for the bus stops for you and/or add google earth to your phone. But updates tend to start on the latest os version (eclair).
Not familiar with Samsung spica nor do I have your app issues. But my Nexus with Android 2.1 rocks (rooted or not)!
ya, so far android phone do not have hotswap sd card slot as the os requires the sd card to be in to store your apps/multimedia.
but its can be use as a thumbdrive still when you hook up to your pc and select mount sd card as removable drive.
so far so good on acer liquid, try upgrading for yr device.
You don't need to close apps, or use taskkillers. You don't need to free up RAM, Android will do that for you. It keeps apps in the memory so that when you open them up it's faster, when memory is needed it will kill the least important apps to make room.
Battery apps are available for free, the system itself will show you battery percentage without an app or widget Settings>About Phone>Status.
There is no way to move an app to SD because of piracy. Apps2SD is enabled amongst the modding community and you should be able to find a way of enabling that. Surely you can understand the issue, you should be able to install as many apps as you want... assuming you don't have a G1
Thanks for the replies. Yeah I kind of got the hang of it at the end (even though I couldn't find a free battery app). I solved my bus stop problem after I found one app in Google labs made for Montreal specifically. Yet I wasn't satisfied with the phone for 1.5 Cupcake I guess. So I returned it after one day of use.
Then I just learned today that Samsung is releasing 2.1 in that phone. My luck Well I now I think I will go for the X10. It is suppose to come on 14th April in Canada (with Android 1.6 though).
My phone before moving to android was a n900 with maemo. Problem I have is that with that you had card based multitasking which for example you could be playing a YouTube video on the browser or a app. Then minimize it and still hear it running in the background while you text...with android the app seems to just freeze which is what IV always hated about iPhones...
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
P.S By freezing I mean freezing the state of the app as opposed to "crashing" lol
What exactly are u stating you say its bad but then u complain it just freezes.???? If I may add, android does this and over time shuts off the app....iphone usually doesn't all the time..... And unless your playing music in the backround I find no need to be running music while on the phone doing stuff, it saves ram.....also there's an app for that (possibly) pun intended
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Get a task killer? I've had no problems with freezing. I'm actually streaming music from Slacker radio right now; no slowdown at all.
Sent from my Droid Incredible running Myn's Warm Two Point Two RLS5.3.
I dont mean the phone freezes lol I mean android freezes the state of the app rather than letting it carry on running fully as maemo would..
Just wondering if there is a way around this..
Im pretty sure the n900 was underpowered compared to a Nexus S hence why I thought it would be able to keep apps running not in a "frozen state" in the background...
Oh. Never mind then, sorry about that lol. I'm not sure how to prevent that.

@sottyc
Multitasking of OS doesn't mean every app is always minimized - that would be really bad. It means app could run in background if it want. YouTupe app doesn't want to do that and this makes much sense for me.
You could try to find an app to play YouTube videos in the background, but I don't think this is a good idea. Phone isn't a PC, you know ;-)
As a user you shouldn't notice any difference to your app's behaviour whether it's frozen or even killed in the meantime. As a developer you can influence, to a degree, your app's priority, or create a service, so that android doesn't freeze or kill your app - it still will in extreme cases. In most cases, however, you shouldn't need to.
You wouldn't have an enjoyable experience running youtube and anything else simultaneously. Phones just aren't that powerful, although the dual cores will probably be an improvement.
This is what alot of people dont get...its not to do with performance..My PC back in the day had less power than modern phones and it still worked fine with windows 98 lol...
As said the N900 is underpowered compared to most android devices and that could run anything in background in fact to could have loads of apps open and keep running while you do other stuff..
Youtube might seem a stupid one but I only use it to listen to music so can be useful to be running..
I dont think its anything to do with power, its the OS not being able to cope...
You cant even run online radio via flash via a website and minimize it so you can keep listening.
There are many uses for this...just never thought android does not like to cope with a load..
To say that the OS cannot cope with multi-tasking is like saying linux cannot cope with multitasking. What you describe are design decisions of the developers of the apps you mention. So, I guess, you should get apps that work for you.
The things you are talking about, Youtube streaming and running Flash, are resource intensive.
Multitasking with these is not the same thing as editing a document and periodically checking your email account ot updating your FB status!
@sottyc
As I told you: you could create an app which will play music from youtube or from WWW in the background. But developers don't do that, because this isn't a great idea - no matter which OS you use.
Hey what's up everyone. Anyone know why there is so much RAM being used on the phone? As soon as I bought the phone without installing any apps, I'll open the task manger and see over 430mb's of memory being used, giving me a little over 100mb's left. I'll run 3 apps, bring it into the 80-90mb's left and the phone gets laggy.
Anyone know why the phone is using so much memory with nothing running In the Task manager? I never see it under 400mb's of use.
Thanks

Is it the same after a reboot?
For my Sensation, I've noticed that after a few times using it and playing with it, the avaliable RAM decreases even if I have no more than 5 apps running
Rebooting the Sensation gives me fresh RAM.
Also you may use a taskiller or task manager, that will show you much more running tasks than what is displayed by the stock HTC task manager
HTC's task manager is not even showing the right amount of ram. Go into menu->settings->applications->running and look at your ram there.
I just pulled the battery out and turned the phone back on. Says 468mb's are being used. Have around 110 availible.
Borodin, thanks. I'll try that. But I've noticed after 5 apps running. The phone will get real laggy. I came from an HTC HD7 and I loved how smooth it was. Not seeing that in this phone much...but still like it.

I'm not saying that it's not ridiculous that Sense 3.0 is using that much RAM, I'm just saying that may be we have more mem available then we think.
In my phone right now:
HTC's readings are 438 used/120 free
Android's readings are 253 used/263 free.
Phone definitely needs a make over as Sense is just bogging it down.
Supposedly has something to do with the 2.3 Android system

Yes I don't know why the two are reporting different amounts. But I have a feeling that the one in the running services is showing the correct value.

I installed ADW ex & checked a few times to see how much ram I had and it shows a little over 200mb free(in tsk mngr). Not to mention this thing is now snappy as hell.
Sent from my HTC Feeling.
Strange, I can reach a max of 338Mb free (according to a task killer and an external task manager from the market) after a reboot and after having killed all unecessary tasks. I use settings=>apps=>running apps to kill some tasks, and taskiller to kill some other, because both of them don't display all of the running tasks and display some that the other doesn't display.
After two days of (eavy?) use, doing the same trick to kill al unwantesd tasks, I can't go over 200 or sometimes 150MB so I reboot.
Just like most modern os you don't have to worry about memory. Android will take care of it. Also remember, if you're not using the memory its useless. It's better to have 10mb of memory free always as long as you don't notice issues. Apart from apps there are cached apps, buffers and other things loaded to keep the phone speedy. Just don't look or think about it and definitely don't use a task killer.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
.....or at least, use a task killer very carefuly if you use one, set it to ignore all the system tasks, and also all tasks the OS will always keep on puting ON again indefinitly if they are killed, your wallpaper, any media related app, etc
(after each reboot, I have Gmail, the reader, news, weather, facebook, messaging, etc opened in the background for nothing, I definitly prefer killing it as they will start again normaly if I need them)
But right, except for N64oid and Fpse, I have never been bothered by too low RAM on the Sensation. And when that happened on these 2 emulators, it was after 2 days of heavy use without any reboot, so....^^

I agree with you 100%, and again with your comment about the task killer. Don't install a task killer, and don't obsess about killing about with the built in task killer. Since 2.2 android has done an amazing job at managing and using available resources. It's pre-loading services and apps into memory to have things launch sooner, etc. When the system runs out of available memory it will kill whatever apps it feels it needs to kill in order to give the smoothest experience possible.

The only reason I have a task killer now is if anything is loading for no reason. With that I found that VTOK & Movies by Flixster were always running & causing the phone to never sleep & draining my battery. They were always listed as in the foreground (along with Tmobile's Wifi Calling & MyAccount apps).
Bloatware!! The sooner it can be removed, the better.

I've noticed that rosie uses alot of ram on every sense build. But 3.0 is a little over the top. It gets killed quite easily as well after using the xda app, browser, and download manager for example. And then sense has to completely reload... Htc obviously noticed it a little late in the game and was quick to make miniscule changes in a desperate attempt to conserve ram usage. No scrolling wallpaper? On a dualcore 1.2ghz processor? Really? Lockscreen lag? Lag at all? Can't wait fire a cooked sense 3.0 rom. The difference will be tremendous!

Android is at its most efficient when the memory is being fully utilised. Don't think of memory usage in Windows terms.

Ask and you shall recieve, and that's what HTC just did. The no-scrolling wallpaper is considered a UI feature just as it is on the Galaxy S 2. It's also standard on ADW-EX and Launcher pro. I personally dig the stationary wallpaper.
what have you got so bad against task killers??
You just say "don't use it", without any explanation....
I use one, like I do on my 2 other Android devices, my Sensation is extremely stable, and I don't want to lose fps when I use Fpse or N64oid, sorry to tell you you're wrong: having less than 150MB ram, because many apps are running in the background, when starting one of these 2 emus, makes fps drop, or frameskip less efficient.

Sorry, I don't use emulators. I also don't have a sensation, so I can't comment on gaming on one. I have however played just about every game imaginable on my SGS1 and have never had to worry about closing an app to play any game. The main reason why I tell people like the OP to not use task killers is because they tend to begin automatically killing tasks(the people using them, not the app on it's own), and since the newer versions of android behave they do, those tasks just end up starting again which then leads to an endless loop of task killing, and battery drains for no reason. I also make it a habit of restarting my phones once a day or two, so I never really give the devices to get bogged down with extra crap running. I'm just saying that's my experience. If you like it, then so be it. Kill away.
Another thing you may want to try is, backing out of all of your running apps instead of being addicted to the home button. Home leaves the apps running and using resources; Backing out closes them and keeps the universe in a zen like state. I love the home button, when I know i'm going back to use a certain app immediately. If not then I back out.
allright, I agree with what you say.
Luckilly, I've set my Taskiller not to endlessly kill tasks that always start again (and actually, Taskiller doesn't display them, or don't kill them automatically or in one click on the widget, only if you go to the app itself and select force kill, what I never do knowing they will start again asap).
I mainly use it, from its widget, to kill everything related to messaging, gmail, facebook, reader, tutorial, etc, that tend to start automatically and never stop when I connect datas or reboot the Sensation.
I also most of the time try to back out instead of home button, but for a few apps, it may be loooonng because it will display a lot of pages back before killing the app.
As for newer versions of RAM management, it also depends on the ROM I suppose.
With my stock SFR/Vodafone french ROM, after, let's say, 2 days of use, the RAM goes under 170Mb, even if I close all tasks, I don't know where RAM is drained, I'm pretty sure my stock ROM is responsible for it, so I reboot every day or every 2 days too.
I notice that a lot of apps run on start up and after I stop them they'll just start again 5 or 10 mins later. I use adv task killer and the stock task manager. Is there an app I can download to manage them better or is there something in settings ive missed.
Task killers, especially automated ones, went out of favor when better memory management came in over the last couple Android releases.
Something like Titanium Backup will let you "freeze" apps/services that you don't think you need and, perhaps more importantly, easily unfreeze them when you realize you really did need them. Root is generally required.
The more you stop an app, the more it's going to keep trying to run. Don't use task managers. Let your phone do what it wants. When you need the memory to do something, just do it! You're phone will know how to allocate the RAM and freeze tasks. If you want an app to never run, that you can't get rid of, freeze it with Titanium Backup. Be careful with that, though.
Edit: Damn jeff, posted at the same time!
Edit 2: Of course, this would be common knowledge if he would bother to do the basic research I thought most people do when they first get a device. I knew task killers were bad before I even knew about custom roms.
I use Gemini to stop apps from auto starting when the phone boots up
Sent from my GT-P7510 using xda app-developers app
The problem is that my phone doesn't allocate. I play a game called peggle and when I run it , it runs really slow and laggy but if I clear all of the processes running in the back ground the game runs fine. I was hoping to get more control over my phone once I rooted it. Don't get me wrong I can flash roms and use Titanium Backup to uninstall the stuff I couldn't. But it feel like thats where it stops. I use gmail and facebook but I only want them to run when I'am using them, kinda like my computer. But we can't alway get what we want.
P.S sorry I couldn't find the sticky on why task managers are bad to use, finding stickys on this site is sometimes like trying to find a pirate's buried gold
I'll admit that there is a lot of "old" information out there on task killers and things like Juice Defender. It can be pretty confusing. It took me a good year before I realized that the Android world had changed from the times of those posts and reviews. Basically, as I understand it, prior to Froyo, memory management was pretty poor in Android. Task killers were a "user-land" way of making up for OS-level deficiencies. Froyo and certainly GB have much better memory management, making task killers more of a source of system instability than the benefit they once were.
There isn't a good way to be able to say "I don't want this, that, and the next service to not be running while I'm running this game/app." Those things are running services generally because they need to stay in contact with the mother ship to do something you want, like keeping abreast of changes, or sometimes something you don't want, like tracking your surfing habits or location. A service also runs when the app needs to keep track of or respond to something else happening on your phone, like battery/bandwidth monitoring tools, or notifiers of various sorts. A well-designed app will try to restart its services when it detects they have stopped.
You might be able to freeze things with TiBackup or the like, kill the services, play the game, unfreeze, then continue. I've never tried anything that fancy. I seem to recall that TiBackup could use the tagging from Apps Organizer to select things for batch operations, but I haven't tried it myself.

+1 to this. I've tried everything from killing apps to freezing them. I finally stuck with using Gemini to stop apps from auto-opening. Apps such as Maps, DSP Settings, etc. This allows you to stop the apps from turning on until you turn them on.
To add to what jeff said, another thing even if it says facebook is running it might not be. But it could be a service that facebook borrows from android so you dont need fifteen instances of gps running simultaneously. Instead android gps is used by fifteen different apps. And if it happens to turn on to update your locations facebook thinks it needs to also update so if you want to tell you friends your at the local brothel automagically you can.
That is why it appears when you kill a process and 10 seconds later it is started back up. Something is using it for some reason.

Thanks! I flashed a new rom hoping it would use less system rescources. I use valhalla final , before valhalla my system used around 225megs sysyem ram after it droped to around 186. then I unistall some stuff i didnt use that came with it and it got to around 178. Now peggle plays fine. but when I kill apps running in the background the system only uses 156megs. then my emulators run fine. It drives me nuts when programs run rampant. They should only run when I use them, like my computer. My gf reminded me that its just a phone and maybe iam asking too much
Glad you are up and going! If you like Valhalla Final, you might want to try FB's trimmed-down version of Raver's Valhalla Black. It comes with one of AntonX's kernels and is a little snappier and leaner version than the "Valhalla Final" version, in my opinion. You can try later versions of AntonX's kernels as well. (Links for both in my sig).
Your phone is a computer. It's just that Windows is a lot better at "hiding" all the crap that is running in the background!
So, I've heard the new update 2.21.401.10 still has the well known limited multitasking issues (see YT videos for One X, it's the same for us: http://www.youtube.com/results?sear...0.0.0.119.352.3j1.4.0...0.0...1ac.R68YKWQ8QnE )?? Is it true? How can we persuade HTC to keep standard Android multitasking?
I've also heard the audio issues (crackles, trashed sounds, some micro-stutters sound-related. You can easily notice this with games, f.e. Pinball Arcade or Mame4Droid etc. Won't hear these problems on GS2 and other Android phones) are still there too, so the audio driver is still the same.
Should I go back to GS2? Multitasking problem is very important for me...
I don't have issues with sound now, never have. A lot of games ether aren't compatible completely (gta 3), and others are just trash audio. If you want to test audio run a GOOD mp3 file, if it crackles its your phone....

the multitasking of the one X and S isnt' bugged, it is in this way for a choice of HTC. Basically the system doesn't left completly open apps but it freeze them which is almost the same of restart the app from zero more or less. This is because HTC want to keep some resources free to have a more fluid sense experience.
Anyway if you have an unlocked device you can flash this script http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27318828#post27318828 that should give you real multitasking and leave the cool HTC interface ( the task manager ) to swith from an app to another. I would try it but I don't want to unlock my device at the moment.
none of the scripts work. wait till developers will fix it on kernel level. no other solutions here.

I agree with hexaae. It's worth nothing having a super-fluid UI if it means killing your opened browser when you try to live it in background. You just can't browse between browser and email: how is this supposed to be called multitasking??
I really believe this choice of HTC's is senseless... On a smartphone with 1GB of RAM...
Edit1: by the way, what is the "background processes limit" option in "development options" supposed to do? Possible values are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, default.
Edit2: would it be an idea to make a poll and see how many people would be interested in this?

It worked for me, problem was the battery started draining like crazy. Which got me thinking, the reason HTC did this was battery life. Nothing else. Sense was still just as smooth for me, but apps would multi task like I used to, but my battery would last less than half as long. So I went back to stock and am getting decent battle life again.

Well this is quite natural, you should manually clear everything once that you put the phone on stand-by ( and here the cool HTC task manager interface lack of a " close all" button ) or if you don't want to do this you can put task killer widget on the home that kill everything by a tap. Anyway this would kill also the background process not started by you which is not good so HTC should really put a "close everything" button on task manager interface so we can kill just recent apps opened by the user and not from the system.

It lacks the close all option because it is not needed. You dont have to close any apps unless they are something that need to be operating all the time like music player when it is playing songs or navigator and stuff like that. There is no difference for your batterylife whether you clear the "recent apps" list or not. And its called "recent apps" for a reason because it means that it has nothing to do with the fact is that application actually running or not. It has always being like that in android. It just makes it easier to jump between apps.
Using task killers and such only increases battery usage since the app it has closed needs to be loaded again when you use it the next time instead of it being just unfreezed from the memory.
HTC has set the automatic killer which kills apps on the background when running out of memory way too aggressive when you compare that to how it works on vanilla ICS or even older HTC phones running android 2.2 or 2.3.
However the latest update made multitask way better for One S. And Iam talking about the one which updatet android version to 4.0.4. Now you can jump between many apps without the fear of them closing immediately so Iam very happy with that now and it works as its should be.

Well its working fine for me. I can now jump between 4-6 fairly light programs and 2-3 heavier ones without the previous app always closing like before the update.

Actually I still don't know because I do not have the last updated, I'm waiting that it goes online on automatic update.....
Hope you are right!

Please can you test this?
Open Google in the stock browser and type in something to search (but don't start searching!)... then switch between other apps and finally go back to the browser. Does it still reload and delete your input text?
I'm going to test the script now. Available memory is not an issue for me, as I removed Sense and am running Nova Launcher. My available memory usually sits around +230, ranging from 170-270. Haven't seen it drop below that. As for battery life, as long as you actually use the HTC multitask button and kill the apps that you don't want to go back to, the battery shouldn't really be affected, or at least the only effect will be a result of the apps that you actually want running, so it's a trade off, right? Keep in mind that means not killing the processes that will be automatically restarted by Android (ie using an auto task killer, or some pre Froyo type apps), only user apps that you recently launched and are now killing.

Oh god, didn't I just explained this few post earlier? You dont have to do any of that since it DOESNT have any impact to your battery life. Go ahead and test it if you dont believe me.

Ok, I just did what you asked. After doing that with the default browser I was able to jump between Dolphin HD which had two tabs open, youtube app and chrome without any of them closing. And I even went to home screen between them. I think thats pretty good compared how it worked previously. Because then often it was enough if I just jumped to homescreen and then right back the previous app to make it close.
Confirmed.
Official stock ROM, via OTA, ver. 2.31.401.5... and there IS multitasking, finally! Task manager is much more conservative (around 70-80% of cases) with executed apps in the multitasking-history-menu...
Yes, also the browser now won't reload pages if you switch to the mail app for a moment and go back...
~200MB free mem.
