This rom was made to fill the gap between the MCR 1.1, obelisk 1.3, and fresh 1.1 roms. I had trouble upgrading to the unofficial 1.3 from the MCR 1.1 and I didn't not like the visual changes in the fresh rom. I was just making this for me personally but figured some of you guy might appreciate it.
I have optimized via PNG shrinking, zipaligning, and bloatware removal in this rom as much as I believe is necessary. This rom has been personally tested by me to flash over the stock 1.56.651.2, Fresh 1.0 and 1.1, unofficial MoDaCo 1.3a, and MoDaCo 2.0 without wiping. Warning: flashing from Fresh 1.1 and 1.0 may leave some of the fresh files on your phone aka you may notice stuff is still "fresh".
Last but not least, always do I nandroid backup before you install this rom or any addon. I take no responsibility for any damage done to your phone.

Espresso TTG: It's a mashup of espresso blue rosie with black framework files. It also includes the animations and espresso lockscreen.
The animations came from the Gutted Hero rom by chuckhriczko. Espresso blue theme came from Fresh 1.1 rom, and I cleaned it up. I did not create either of these effects or the espresso themes. The full themes come from ratcoms themes plus my own additional work for cdma icons. Mostly everything is ported and repackaged.

I have not tested any of these. I am simply providing them for a centralized location for theme/lock screens so you may customize your Hero your way. Always do a nandroid backup before flashing any theme or lock screen. Any feedback on which do and don't work so I can edit the list accordingly is welcome. Also note installing any of these may reduce my optimizations for performance.
FAQQ: What version of Android is this ROM?
A: This is Android 1.5 aka Cupcake.
Q: Do I need to do a wipe before installing?
A: No. Enjoy switching roms without loosing any apps or data.
Q: Can I use GCK or MCK with this ROM?
A: Yes. Both work fine.
Q: I'm having problems downloading apps from the Market; what do I do?
A: Sign into Gtalk. Apparently the two are closely related even though you'd never guess. For an in-depth discussion head over to this thread.
Q: How do I get back an app that you removed?
A: If whatever reason you want back some silly stock app, I recommend you use flipzmode's pre-kitchen.
Q: There are still apps in this rom I don't want; How do I remove them?
A: Head on over to How remove apps thread for detailed instructions.
Q: Certain websites don't load properly or at all! Help?
A: Download the hosts.zip file; unzip it and read instructions.
Q: What is this whole Apps2SD thing about?
A: Apps2SD is a script that will do exactly as it implies so you are no longer limited to your phone's internal storage. You only need to format your SD card as FAT+ext2. Once that requirement is met, the rest will be automatic. Warning: Formatting your SD card will erase ALL of the data on it. If you want to keep it, make a backup.

TTG, nice to see another rom for the CDMA Hero. I'll give it a spin when I get home.
Bit of a newbie question here. I am just starting to play with Roms, had Fresh 1.1 on it and took a back up.
Wiped then tried out Eclair 2.1 and took a backup.
Now to put this on, should I reflash back to recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img before applying?
Flashes seamlessly over fresh 1.1. stable, fast ROM. Nicely done!
and I would definitely motion for an Expresso build.
What do the bouncy menu and screen transition add-ons do or look like? I can't find any information on them.

The bouncy menu, simply makes the menu icons have a bounce when they pop on the screen (after you hit the menu hardware button). The screen transition I'm not sure but my guess is that it is the zoom in/out effect when transitioning between screens.
@theresthatguy
I can't wait to try out this rom, simply because I was not a fan of the espresso changes implemented in fresh 1.1. But the speed was great!
Did you also remove the HtcLocationService like the fresh 1.1 rom? I'm kinda hoping it's in yours because I never had a major issue with slow down, at least not a noticeable one.

Apparently this flashes perfectly from Fresh 1.1, so I would recommend you be running that rom or stock. Definitely do not try to flash over an Eclair rom.

The bouncy menu is anytime you press the menu button for ... menus it kind of bounces. There's really not much more to it than that. Do a nandroid backup, try it, don't like then do a restore.
The screen transitions are zoom-in/zoom-out like mentioned above.

I like the espresso rosie but I'm not a fan of the espresso status icons. Which is they this rom is stock looking so people can have a fast rom to customize themselves.
I have included it the HtcLocationService in this rom because I haven't had any major issues either, and removing stuff is easy enough that if you don't want it you can do it yourself.

Stock lock screen. Lock screen is no indication of software version. This rom is based off of the latest stock 1.56.651.2 provided by Sprint.

I would be more than happy to. The only problem is I fried BOTH my Windows computers this week...I've got the parts ordered for a new desktop, but that won't be. built for a couple days. Until then I'm stuck in Ubuntu, and I don't like Gimp.
Once I'm up and running all ill need are the files from a stock expresso build and I should be able to do it.
Liking the ROM, reminds me of the stock Rom just much faster..... been running this all afternoon .... but flashed back to fresh since the stock Rom is boring looking now,

I don't know. This isn't fresh rom.
Flashed over Fresh 1.0 without a wipe, but me in a boot loop, I gave it 20 minutes.
Booted back into recovery, did a factory wipe. reflashed this one, boots back in 3 minutes.
So far it works, seems snappy. But I am still torn, I really like Fresh. I didn't like the new rosie or icons so I went back to 1.0.
I think to get what I want I am going to have to cook my own.
I wiped my phone and installed this ROM, and it wouldn't let me download things from the Market. Should that be normal? Maybe I am missing something or doing something wrong? >.>
I wanna try this so bad I love those transitions but I have to wait until 3pm CST I guess for mediafire and Rapidshare says its overloaded...its 2:15 the wait is killing me lol
edit: lmao just realized fresh rom has the same transitions , oh well still want stock notifications and lockscreen so the wait continues lol

Ok, I've been trying out a lot of Hero ROMS and I'm always disappointed in the speed, or lack thereof. Each time I have found myself flashing back to a stable Hero build and then customizing it to my liking (see below). This release is mainly for my own sanity, to save myself the time and effort of getting back to a setup I prefer.
For clarification purposes, I will be referring to these builds as PhotonMod_Hero1 and PhotonMod_Hero1.5
Just understand that v1 is based on LeakDroid's SuperHero3 build and v1.5 is based on JACHero 2.63.
**UPDATE 7/15/09**
As requested, Re-upped PhotonMod_Hero v1 without the Asian IME (pinyinIME.apk). Just be sure to choose English on the first screen of the setup wizard.
PhotonMod_Hero v1:http://www.mediafire.com/?l3inmmtmjzz
NOTE: If you have random Asian characters showing up in odd places, power off the phone and turn it back on. This seems to only happen before the first reboot.
(Reminder, this one does not use AppsToSD. It is basically SuperHeroV3-MAS minus Rosie and all HTC widgets. Also minus swap. and with a few other teaks.)
Also,
Here is "Lite" version of PhotonMod_Hero1.5. I removed the Weather app and widget, and Retro Clock widget.
PhotonMod_Hero v1.5:http://www.mediafire.com/?nyhyfzzyiom
****UPDATE 7/14/09****
Bluetooth is NOT working in any Hero build at this time
New Build release: PhotonMod_Hero v1.5 - Lite
Based on JACHero2.63 with the following changes:
**Changelog - PhotonMod_Hero1.5 - Lite**
-Removed ALL HTC Widgets
-Replaced HTCCamera with one that works (No sideways image)
-Replaced HtcMusic with old Music app from non-Hero builds (b/c that one is a resource hog!)
-Replaced Rosie with standard Launcher
-Removed Teeter.apk/odex, Stocks.apk/odex, DCS_Stocks.apk/odex
-Removed (commented) Swap partition section in a2sd.sh as I want to try this build out without a Swap partition.
-Added section in a2sd.sh to move a "wallpaper" folder to the FAT32 partition on your SD. That folder contains the wallpapers from the Rosie wallpaper gallery (See Below)
-Added AppsInstaller
-Added Custom Lock Screen
-Added a few "Gems" to the Ringtones/Notifications
To use AppsToSD, make sure you have your SD card setup with Fat32/Ext3 partitions. You will not need a third Linux-Swap partion with this build.
To use new Wallpapers, at the Home screen, press Menu -> Wallpaper. Then choose Albums. You should see a wallpaper folder containing 5 wallpapers.
Thanks to JesusFreke, Haykuro, JAC, Cyanogen, L3wish and the Leakdroid crew, Meltus, and all the other great Devs working to give us the experience we want from our phones.
Rename to update.zip and flash as usual.
you really need to try jac 2.63 with a freshly formatted card and a linux/swap partition. its quite a thrill
Can u put some pics
might give this a try on my other g1...just for fun
i want som pics plzzz !!! and some comments of the one who flashed this .
Fully Functional?
As in Bluetooth working?
Why in the world do you need pics...its hero, duh.
And I have to agree, even 2.63 is quite slow (swapper and a2sd)...I might have to try this one out (though I heard SHv3 had many things not working...).
Thanks for the contribution anyway .
@Shaquiel Harris, NO BT works as of yet. JAC is getting close I guess but NO HERO BUILD HAS BT YET!
Working on taking some screenies for you guys...
be posting in a few...
hmm seems interesting.
wonder how this one works.

Here you see I have changed the background to one I liked from another build. I also have installed the Retro Clock widget, Weather Channel widget, and a few apps (AndroZip, Last.fm, and I really can't remember which else). Right now I currently have about 10MB free (not running apps from SD)
I don't see the bluetooth is working? What do you mean "fully functional"? is the led work, too !?

Ok, I just tried Bluetooth for the first time and it does not turn on. This was my mistake. I do not use it and did not ever try it. I may grab JACHero latest build and mod it the same way (if bluetooth does work in that build) if anyone really wants it. Personally, I never needed it.
As for the LED, as with most Hero builds currently out, the LED does not work. If someone can point to one that does, let me know.
not feeling the "ophone" icons.
but everything else seems legit.
but really isn't fully "functional" due to the fact there is no "rosie" which makes up pretty much the entire experience of "Hero" but good job regardless!

Well why would he say fully functional when indeed it isnt? and 2.63 is slow for you because your using swapper. Your supposed to make a linux swap partition and have a fat 32/ext2/3 and linux swap. 2.63 is the fastest and most reliable rom that has been made so far And well this is the rom i will stay with. I dont need bluetooth because well i dont use it kinda want LED's Though But besides that.

No,
and I can't say I've notice that on other builds I've tried. Is there somewhere you've see that? It may be part of the new MMS app (which many people are having reliability issues / not getting messages)

I have updated my original post that BT is not working. As for speed of JACHero 2.63, I'll give it a whirl now that I can easily get back to this ROM.
But I've heard "Really Fast" about a lot of ROMS running Rosie/SensUI, and have not yet been convinced by any of those claims.
Update!!! Add on zip files can now be flashed through recovery to install!
Update!!! Gutted Hero 1.5 Available with the MR Update!
PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE THREAD BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS!
Ok. There are many changes in this rom. Some may or may not like the changes. I was thinking that I should really live up to the name "Gutted" so I completely removed anything and everything I possibly could. The change log is going to be in the next post.
Also, as stated above this update includes the MR so any issues that were resolved with the update are resolved in this rom.
Now I removed the clock widget in this release but you can easily add it back and the issue with the location and weather not showing should be fixed. Usually it takes a minute or two to find location once pushed but if it doesnt work also push HTCNew.apk and odex and it should work fine.
Oh and before I forget make sure you remember to go into the settings and do a few things. First go to Settings->Data Sunchronization->Google and set up your Google account. Also you may go to Location to set up your GPS and Display to set up the animations.
Finally, I would like to thank MoDaCo for porting the first custom rom ever to the CDMA Hero and making us all very happy people, Amon_RA for his awesome recovery image, Mlign from the Dream community for guidance and pieces of his rom and everyone here at the XDA Communities for being awesome and never giving up.

Changelog
[Gutted Hero 1.5]
Optimized multiple applications as well as Rosie (also reoptimized Rosie since we have the MR update included) such as the Browser, HTC Albums, Phone and Settings
Optimized additional jpegs and pngs that were located various places in the rom
Added Hosts file to block ads for faster web browsing
Added Sprint Visual Voicemail back into the mix
Removed EVERYTHING. Every single HTC widget is now gone, including the clock widget (Look in above post for more)
Removed all other HTC apps that start up on start up including Teeter and Peep
[Gutted Hero 1.0]
Fast
Optimized apps including Rosie.apk (Rosie was 8MB now it's 1.2MB!)
Optimized htc.com.framework.apk and framework-res.apk files
MoDaCo's great and stable 1.1 rom base
Animations from Moto Blur (I think. They are the zooming fading transitions in Mlign's Dream Hero rom)
New Bootscreen (again from Blur I think, it's from Mlign's Dream Hero rom)
Oh and it's fast too
I'm pretty sure the clock is crashing because you removed the weather. They had seemed to be closely tied when I looked at the original sense ui.

Yeah it's easy really. If you want you can take it from my rom and just replace it. The way I did it though is by opening up /system/app/Rosie.apk in an archive manager of some sort (7zip would work). Then I pulled all the pngs out of it and optimized them with optipng. Then I just dragged them back into the apk and your done. There are also jpegs somewhere in there so I deleted all of them except for the first one and with that one I just resaved it and compressed it a bit. You can look in my Rosie.apk if it helps or like I said, your free to just use that one if you want. Just note if you take my framework-res.apk, that is where the anims are stored so you will want to replace my anims folder with MoDaCo's unless you like the new ones.

The rosie linked here is a scant 732 kilobytes:

I had been toying with installing it for awhile, then I downloaded the dxTop home replacement and I don't think I will be using rosie ever again .
EDIT: Great rom idea btw. I would love to see a real "gutted" Hero rom, including the removal of Rosie. MoDaCo has previously posted a neat little script to accomplish this:

Does hitting the "Clock" shortcut in your app drawer not work either?
Speaking of weather and location not working in the clock widget, I'm noticing the same behavior from MoDaCo's 1.1 ROM. I've searched for more information about it but haven't come up with anything yet. Do you have any updates as to why this might not be working?

Will your Gutted ROM install if I have MoDaCo 1.1 installed, running Apps2SD with my SD card partitioned with the three partitions? I have had trouble installed Fresh's ROM because of the Apps2SD partitions.

Has anyone installed the Bootscreen-anims-lockscreen-signed.zip after installing the fresh-cdma-hero-0.4-MR.zip?
I previously had installed the bootscreen package on top of MoDaCo 1.1 and it was awesome. When I tried to install it on top of Fresh 0.4, it would not boot.
Anyone else had success or problems with this combination?

Is this just the bootscreen, animations and lockscreen? That is all I want.
That and optimized rosie which is more responsive than the included one.
Thanks. Just DL'd and installed it. Just what I was looking for.

taskbar (white)
all taskbar icons -BT, wifi, 3g, battery, 4g
menu selections (yellow AOSP selection)
power menu icons
what it doesn't do
it does not change the application icons except for settings
if you want aosp themed app icons i would suggest NonSence or bugless
Things to work out
the location service icon has been removed but still takes up a space in the taskbar (i do not know how to remove that so any help would be nice)

it should work with sence and it should also have the espresso dock on the bottom
there should be no reason as to why not although i have not tested it
Confirmed working with damagecontrol 3.2, only gripes with it are the 3g and reception icons in the taskbar are considerably lower res than the other icons, and the charging icon looks a little big and out of place.

i'm surprised about the lower resolution gripe cause i used higher resolution ones then the stock aosp
but thanks for the feedback
and as for the charging icon i assume you mean the one on the left (for switching between disc/charging) yeah i need to fix that
off topic note the search buttons look out of place when hitting the search button
Perhaps they got screwed over when the os tried down-sampling them itself?
Fadakar: I'm not seeing any difference whatsoever. Can you ss it?
good job. this looks awesome. glad you threw this together. I personally am allergic to anything resembling stock and i also had darchs aosp setups on hero, so its nothing new to me. i like a completely new experience. However i know theres a **** ton of aosp junkies that will love this. thanks

You paste the same crap in EVERY thread. XDA should add the mod to allow users to ban other users by paying. Make money and clean out the crap threads.
I'd pay for a 2 year ban on that magnus dude just for making ugly themes.
Kinda harsh guys. But he should stay on topic.
Love the AOSP look. Just enough to hold me over until someone can make a full rom of it. Thanks!
Thanks
Added to themes in sticky thread.. Well done, thanks for sharing
failed to install via Amon_RA recovery. switching to clockwork to see how that fairs
edit: installed with clockwork i didn't wip anything maybe i should've wiped cache had a weird boot loop going would make it to lock screen and then restart
edit2: my sdcard was bad which impacted the system after fastbooting back to amons recovery and the nand backup i had there verified through my disk utility that the card was bad >_<
Good job...This is really cool!
a picture with htc sense and this theme would be nice i wanna c the taskbar with sense thanks

I also noticed that the 3g and bars were a little blurry. Not a big deal, but just for the record.
Anyone using this with DamageControl? Which version did you flash?
okay so an update to everyone who said that the icons were low res the system was using the wrong set of icons the 25x25 so i updated the package with flipz lock to contain the 38x38 icons
and later tonight i will upload the other one along with one with a clear lockscreen
still in the search bar the icons are dark when i switched them for the lighter ones every time i would hit search it would restart my phone so i gotta look into that some more
that should be about it
oh and sence still has the scroll page indicator but the espresso dock so it doesn't look great might revert back to stock sence if i have the time sorry
recommended with other launchers
i love this theme but for some reason when i get an email or message the icons on the taskbar have a black square around them instead of just being the message icon or the gmail icon
Update:
This theme isn't to popular but I promised some people a cm6 final version, so here it is.
Ok so this theme is an old theme I ported over from 1.6, I had noticed a lack of lighter themes around here and I know everyones a fan of Tux. I themed most of the icons that had the Droid in them and replaced them with some Tux icons. If there are some others icons with the droid face that I missed and you want them changed I'll try and hook that up.
Special thanks to (updated):
Nebrada for the great plastic theme(http://forum.xdadevelopers.com/showthread.php?t=562283)
Iktose for the Aeon Blue stat icons.
damiandarkwater for the great input.
And of course Darch and Cyanogen for the 2.2 our Heros!

Sign up for 4shared. Its free and reliable and much better than 2shared. If I remember correctly it was hard to see where to download the file from on 2shared cause of all the ads

I would most certainly love to make a splash screen. I thought about changing the start splash but Cyanogen and the teamwork so hard I didn't want to take anything away from them.
I work on the splash screen.
I to love any thing tux related.

Thank you for the info the 4share account is nice!
I was being lazy and trying to take the easy way out. I hate when you goto those download pages and the intentionally make it hard to figure out where the real freaking d/l link is.
GJ on the theme man .... its good to see alot of new themes popping up lately.
Same tux being the Linux mascot was just another reason for me to love Linux. I flashed this on top of Steel my Elegance and all is well I dig this.

Thank you guys, means alot to here that from XDA members. If you guys see anything or have icons suggestions I'll work on that.
I'm going to make a splash screen for this now.
The splash screen download keeps coming back as corrupt. It says it is not a valid zip file

so I made a .rar and changed the ext to .zip but did it manually try it now, or use win rar on the original.
Nice work, those icons are great! love the splash screen!
The android is still on the market app. If you could put Tux on the planet for the browser or something and have him popping out of the envelope for the gmail icon that would be mucho cool
just an idea though.
Do I just flash the splash?

The splash needs to be booted through fastboot and you'll need a eng spl. There's a good post just above mine on how to do it.
I didn't do the market cause of it being part of the google apps but I'll work on that one (the icon style makes in hard to alter since I don't have the layers). Consider the others done I'll post them tomorrow.
Sweet beans
And makes sense.
Very cool working with feed back and all.
Bump Update v0.2
This is the update thanks Damian for the input. Maybe I'll make a cool animated load screen.

Of course I'd be happy to. I was just waiting to see if it was wanted. I thought this theme might die. I'll post it tomorrow night.
Any chance you'll update this for the darch's stable cm6 release?
