My readers (see for example this post) probably already know about two Pocket PC Phone Edition-specific SMS export utilities, Jeyo Mobile Extender (which, unfortunately, has severe problems with more than a few hundred SMS messages stored on a given PPC PE device) and Dopod SMS Backup, which is pretty simple and only supports exporting. There has always been a third alternative, zedsoft.net's smsOrganizer, but, up to now, it wasn't WM5-compliant and, therefore, I haven't reviewed it.
The author of the latter, zedsoft.net, has just announced the WM5 version to be out.
Give it a try - it's by far the most powerful SMS organizer I know and is really worth giving it a try. It's available here.
How do you completely uninstall this program?
I get a dialog box that says: _wfopen failed. MycreateFile TimeOut!
and then the program crashes. Was working fine for a while. Tried uinstall/reinstall.
I think what happened was i deleted the file(s) in the "settings" directory.
Should there be something there?
Thanks!
SmsOrganizer Uninstall/Reinstall problems
I had the same problem. Only installed to test it, but when uninstalled, it just does not either reinstall, if does install cannot run it. I get the same message, something "_wfopen failed. MycreateFile" . I also made the same mistake of removing the files from the settings. Although I tried to create the same name directory, but has not worked. It seems to be a nice application, something that I searched for monthssssssss, now that I found one, it has problems!!!! Also, when you install and run it the application icon "O" keeps on moving one space to the left every time you start it. Cannot wait to get it working again cuz it seems to be such a handy tool the way its laid out. You can backup all the sms or specify your own created directories. I have not tried to restore the backedup sms's though as I don’t have a second WM5 device. Would like to backup my sms's and everything else first before I flash the ROM.
Would someone with a pristine installation be so kind as to zip up and post the "Settings" folder?
I believe this will alleviate the situation.
I tried copying the "settings" folder included in the cab file, believe it or not, it almost worked i got a lot closer to loading the app, but am still getting an error.
Anyone?
So.. this prog is the culprit....

I installed this program sometime ago, but did not realize this is causing the _wfopen failed. MycreateFile TimeOut! dialogs... If you guys get this, it means you are unable to receive new SMSes. I experienced this for several days before realizing that this error occurs everytime someone sends me a new SMS. The sender may receive a delivery report, but the SMS didn't show up in the inbox, but gave the 2 error instead. Had to hard-reset as I didn't know this prog was the culprit....
smsCreative has been released!
Our new program - smsCreative v0.93 - has been released. This is an all-in-one SMS application for Windows Mobil PDAs.
We have put all our famous program (smsOrganizer, smsBackup, AllCleanup, smsRunner, StealSafe) together and rewrite almost all of the program code.
smsCreative has all the knowledge and features like smsOrganizer, but it works as fine as you wished to have by the first version already.
The full price will be 19.99 USD, but now you can buy the product only 9.99 USD during the beta period. Of course you will get all the updates later.
You can download, try or buy the product on our webpage (evolens.net) and you can follow all the changes we made in our product blog (smscreative.net).
Does it support Sheduled SMS sending?
Hi everybody
Ive been around thousand of threads on xda-dev and couldn't find any official one for Anti-Virus. That's the main reason why I'm starting this new thread and also because Anti-Virus on Pocket PC are growing more and more. Actually we are not safe but we don't care until we get infected and that will be too late, with most of the time the only solution a hard reset.
Let's discuss and compare in this thread the different Anti-Virus SW available on the market today, and bring out positive/negative points based on our experience. It will be benifit for everybody ...
I know everyone hates Norton/Symantec but I was on the beta testing team for Norton Smartphone Security Premier Edition since day one and it is very friendly and easy to use.
http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/beta/overview.jsp?pvid=nssp1beta
Actually I was using Symanter antivirus for handheld on my QTEK 2020i WM2003SE and that's true it is user friendly and worked fine, with virus definitions updates very ofently.
I was unable to install it on my HTC Athena WM6
Do you know is there is any version coming for WM6 Pumpiron?
I checked you link and it's different from what I used to have on my old device.
Ill download this beta and try it.
I'll let you know what I think about it, if it slow down the machine etc ...
It did not on mine and when I uninstalled it, it was gone...no traces..part of the beta testing. I did uninstall from my desktop, not my PPC
I am curios, how does this effect your device speed and performance?
What is the CPU and memory usage (in reality, not what stated on the site)?
I have Symantec on my XP PC and it sucks big time (does the job for the most part, but very slow and heavy).
eTrust came pre-installed on my Jamin, but that is an even bigger atrocity!
Another question - do they have a list for PPC viruses on their site like they do for PC ones?
The only PPC virus I heard of was a harmless proof of concept that could make files display a pop-up message and did not reproduce.
If real viruses for WM systems are already out there (I know its a only matter of time) I would be interested in reading up on them to know what I am facing.
Also, anyone actually caught a virus on a WM machine and can share the experience?
Here are my first impressions:
1 - The Startup time of my Athen after a soft reset has increased by around 20 sec, this because Symantec is loading on the startup.
2 - I didn't noticed a slow down during normal utilization of the device, but it's really early before concluding on that point because I need to try different applications.
3 - When I first connected to the Internet via WiFi, even the connection were established, could not load the pages having an error "page not found"
but after 15sec everything is back to normal and connections to Internet was not a problem at all.
4 - I just suffered a Freeze but not sure it is due to Symantec, because i've been suffering frequent daily freezes on my Athena since I upgraded to WM6.
But the freeze came this time while using the Antivirus SW
5 - The package is composed by an AntiVirus, a Firewall, a Norton Secure Folders utility and a Norton Tools utility.
6 - Also note that after finish installing it, it force you to set a pin code that you will have to enter everytime you soft reset your device. I tried to disable it but it won't let you do it
I'll give more details about the package in a different post after some testing
levenum said:

You can check the list from the SW installed on the PPC
Just applied live update over WiFi and basically there are 5 in the list:
EICAR-TEST-FILE
WinCE.Duts.A
Backdoor.Brador.A
Trojan.Redbrowser.A!jar
MSIL.Cxover.A
Definitions : 04/06/07 ver 2.0
As promised, here is my feedback on the tools provided in the package:
1 - Norton Antivirus
Very friendly and easy to use, from the menu u can access the options for the Antivirus, the Scans, the AntiSpam, Updates and Proxy config. You can also access the quanrantined files, the activity log and the virus definitions list. Manual scan and automatic scan can be performed.
2 - Norton Firewall
I didn't really understood how we use the Firewall function. Basically when you start it you have a tab showing the security level. It is have different security levels for World (the highest), Office, Home and Open Sapce Networks (the lowest). Also you can not modify them at all. You can access a second tab called Events by severity in last and a third tab "Event list" which show in details all the events that happened on your device, like soft reset, login success .... very weird as we can not reset this list, also we can not change any parameter in the Norton Firewall, everything is set by default
3 - Norton Secure Folders
from what I guessed, this utility allow you to choose folders on your device and set them as secure. I don't know what it does exactly but I think it should encrypt the data inside the folder so it's protected in case you have been attacked by a trojan who collects your data and send it to the pirate.
You click on menu->Add->then you choose from the list Device, Mircrodrive or Storage Card if you have one. Then you type the name of the folder you want to secure.
I did a test, I choosed Device, and kept the folder name blank and clicked on ok. It added the "secure folder" under device. if you try to remove it you will have this warning "Removing the secure folder will destroy all data in the folder. do you really want to remove it?"
4 - Norton Tools
It contains 2 utilities, GetUUID and Lock
GetUUID will display on the screen 2 series of digites
the first one don't know what it is and second one is your IMEI
I guess this info is needed when the final version is released and
you need to register the SW
Lock utility display the following message when u click on it
Encryption may take several minutes. Pls wait for the device to power off.
If you need to soft reset, pls wait until encryption is completed and the
device powers itself off.
I clicked on yes, so the device start encrypting something .... then the screen turned off. I turned it on using the power button and it displayed to me the password screen which I entered. then it displayed the message decrypting for about 30 sec, then I had my normal today screen ...
Im wondering if it does not encrypt/decrypt the secure folders you
already chosen using the "Norton Secure Folders" utility.
Ive wrote to Symantec asking them for a manual or user guide, hopefully they will reply.
I have rated this SW 3/5 on their site, mainly because it is not clear what all utilities does and because Firewall is set by default and noting can be changed.
Hope my feedback will be usefull, and I hope other users will bring to us their experiences with the different Anti-Virus SW they have used on their Pocket PCs.
Just as I suspected, no real viruses just a nice proof of concept that asks you if you want to try it:
WinCE.Duts.A
A back door that needs to be run and does not spread:
Backdoor.Brador.A plus it would be useless if you are on GPRS/EDGE/UMTS or behind a NUT router.
This one seems like it could actually be trouble, if:
a) you leave in Russia
b) you are stupid enough to believe you can get WAP pages through SMS and that it would be cheaper than GPRS
c) you can get it to work on PPC.
Trojan.Redbrowser.A!jar
This one though, I have to admit is rather clever - using .NET to run both on PC and PPC amd is fairly destructive:
MSIL.Cxover.A
It is still unclear, however how its spreads from PC to PC (presumably you have to download and install / run it).
Of course given the fact that many people save their docs on SD and not the default My documents folder and that they do not disable security completely on their WM 5 and up devices (which are becoming majority these days) the effectiveness of this worm is more than questionable.
Well I still think it is too early to actually by this kind of apps. Also I think that as with many other programs the same "heavy" approach that works on PCs with many resources will not work well on PPC (not the way they are today). A different solution to virus protection needs to be found to be useful.
But hey - thats just my opinion...
So from what ive read its still to early to be using a resource draining av on the ppc? If this is the case, how about Spybot S&D? Is spyware more of a threat than viruses? are they really that much different? I find that spybot updates more regularly(when i connnect wifi).
as with virus's i believe that have to be made to support ppc's
in which case maybe due to spyware makers lack of innovation
that market have yet to take off
WingChan: whether to use the software or not is a personal decision - my belief is: given the list of threats it is too early. Also I believe that the method used to protect against viruses on PC is not suitable for PPC because of the resource requirement. Something more efficient needs to be invented, perhaps taking advantage of difference in architecture between WM and desktop - like the fact that system files can not be corrupted but only hidden.
Note that BigDede preformed the test on HTC Advantage which has a 600+ MHz processor if I am not mistaken. I doubt the app would be as unnoticeable on my 200MHz Prophet.
But it is only a matter of time before someone writes a real and damaging virus for this platform as it becomes more and more common. So if you really value the info you have on there you might want to get protection already - although a good and frequent backup would be much better.
I haven't heard of spyware for Windows Mobile, only major one for BB - any one got any news on this?
There is a major difference between spyware and viruses:
Viruses try to cause as much damage as possible and their effects always become visible sooner or later, in many cases almost immediately after infection.
Spyware on the other hand, needs to hide and tries not to interfere in device operation as much as possible and show no sign of activity.

Very good explanation of the differences between Viruses and Spywares.
I agree also that it is too early today to really worry about having protection, but I prefer to be ready instead of regretting and wishing I had some protection.
Very good remark as well regarding the frequent backup ...
Need Help
Hello Everyone,
I'm not a developer, but I found your thread on this subject via Google and was hoping I could ask a question...
I'm able to download the Norton Smartphone Security Premier Edition Beta version, but when I try to install it (which I assume must be done first to my laptop, followed by sync'ing my laptop with my 8525) a "Self-Extracting Archive" window comes up that says: "Warning, one or more files skipped". This occurs when the installation process reaches "Extracting: SUPPORT\START.ICO 100%".
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
Many thanks for your time!

Hi
Maybe this warning is not a big deal, have you tried to install it by double clicking on the start.exe file ???
G.S./BigDede,
Thanks for the reply. I really appreciate it.
If I understand your recommendation, I don't think that gets me where I need to be. However, it could always be user error on my part.
When I try to "Setup" the file I downloaded (called "NSSPB.exe") from Symantec, a window comes up that contains a button that says "Install". However, after I click on it, it gets to a point in the installation process that shows "Extracting: SUPPORT\START.ICO 100%", and the process simply stops and a small window comes up that says: "Warning, one or more files skipped".
In essence, it appears I have recieved the entire 4.04 MB of program files I downloaded, but something goes askew when I try to extract/install them.
I'm stumped...
Thanks again, A.J.
I'll extract the files and will zip them for you.
Send me via PM your email adress so I can send you the zip file
Cheers
I've noticed since upgrading my Droid X to Gingerbread that many websites that were previously fooled by setting the User Agent (in Dolphin HD) to "desktop" are no longer fooled and can now detect that I'm on a mobile device. This can be quite irritating as the mobile version of many sites is horrible.
To see if this article pertains to you, if you're set for a desktop user agent string, go to http://www.bbc.co.uk and see if you get the mobile version of the page or the desktop version. If you get the mobile version despite your user agent setting, this hack may help you.
When this first happened to me I decided to find out how the sites were detecting the fact that I'm on a mobile device. Generally a website only knows what you tell it about yourself, and what you tell it about yourself is 100% in the HTTP headers your browser sends (or that get added by a proxy server if you use one). So the first logical place to look was to see what all headers the browser was sending. Note: for any who might object that it also knows things about you by your cookies, your cookies are actually sent as HTTP headers as well.
I have a CGI script on one of my web servers that I use to see what all headers my browser is passing. There are plenty such scripts/sites on the web -- here is a decent one (it's not mine) if you want to see what your browser sends. Examining the headers, one stuck out like a sore thumb:
Code:
HTTP_X_WAP_PROFILE='http://uaprof.vtext/com/mot/mb810/mb810.xml'
Geez, that's a pretty dead giveaway isn't it? I checked a phone running FroYo and it does not send that header, so that further confirms this is the header these sites use to detect me as a mobile (since they don't detect me as a mobile under FroYo and do under Gingerbread).
I then Googled HTTP_X_WAP_PROFILE and found numerous coding resources where they suggest looking to see if that header exists and/or is set to anything in order to detect mobile browsers. Bingo.
Great - so how to get rid of it? My first thought is that since the header is clearly identifying me as a Droid X (MB810), there has to be something in the phone that is providing the data. Since I observed that the header is present whether I access the net via WiFi or via 3G, that further confirmed that this is all happening in the phone and not being added by Verizon in transit.
The first sensible place to look was /system/build.prop. Turns out that the first sensible place to look was the right place to look as I found this line:
Code:
ro.mot.hw.uaprof='http://uaprof.vtext/com/mot/mb810/mb810.xml'
Well, that's about as perfect as you could ask for. Not knowing if the phone might be touchy about completely removing this setting, my first attempt was to change the line to read like this:
Code:
ro.mot.hw.uaprof=''
I found that you must reboot the phone for the setting to take effect (no real surprise there). Unfortunately, afterward, when I examined the headers being sent by the browser, they now contained this:
Code:
HTTP_X_WAP_PROFILE=''
With that setting, the various websites still detected me as a mobile browser (which you would expect). Next I tried changing the build.prop to this:
Code:
ro.mot.hw.uaprof=
* Note - there is nothing after the equal sign - not a space or anything, just a carrriage return.
This (pleasantly) resulted in the HTTP_X_WAP_PROFILE header being completely absent -- the ideal outcome. Happily, the various websites that were detecting me as a mobile no longer did. Success!
In the interest of being thorough, I tested just removing the ro.mot.hw.uaprof setting altogether (by commenting out the line). I figured that probably was not the best plan, but I wanted to see what would happen. When I did that, the following header was the result:
Code:
ro.mot.hw.uaprof='http://uaprof.motorola.com/phoneconfig/MotoMB200/profile/MotoMB200.rdf'
Interesting default value -- and of course I was again identifiable as a mobile device.
So, the fix for this is pretty simple. The exact property that needs to be modified in your build.prop would of course vary if you're not running a Motorola build, but I'd expect it to be readily identifiable. Of course you have to be rooted to do this, and of course you should make a backup copy of your build.prop before you modify it, and of course you should think about what your fallback recovery is going to be if you foul up your build.prop and end up in a boot loop or something. Can you boot into Recovery and then fix the file with ADB, etc. -- it all depends on how your phone is set up.
For those that like step-by-step, here's precisely what I did:
Open Root Explorer (or other "root aware" editor)
Navigate to /system
Mount system as R/W
Open build.prop in text editor
Find the ro.mot.hw.uaprof line
Put a # at the beginning of the existing line (to make it into a comment)
Insert a new line below the existing line that says "ro.mot.hw.uaprof=" (without the double quotes -- no characters after the equal sign)
Save and exit editor
Mount system as R/O
Reboot phone
By doing it this way I end up with a backup copy of the original string in case I want to easily put it back. Root explorer automatically saves the original build.prop as build.prop.bak, but if you're really cautious you might want to actually make a copy of the file to your SD card or something.
At this point, in Dolphin HD, with my user agent string set to Desktop, all of the web sites that had begun seeing me as a mobile device now serve the normal desktop page (as desired). If I want to see the mobile version (for some reason) I can just switch Dolphin HD back to Android mode (user agent string) and then I get the mobile version.
Hope this helps someone. Sorry it was so long -- almost everything I write up is.
P.S. If you do this successfully on a non-Motorola phone, post here and let others know.
firstly,, BIG THANKS
I am running a GB2.3.3build.596 P3D 2file root DroidX..
when i open ROOT EXPLORER in r/w mount and open the build.prop i can not type anything..and this mobile site only crap was the reason i took 2 days of forum reading at 3 forums before i went ahead and sbf'd back to froyo from a stock Verz 2.3.3GB to then root ,and then to install the 2 P3D files to have a .596 build GB rooted phone
any suggestions, maybe another editor ware? total newb
I know some of these offers are posted around some of the individual phone forums, but didn't see this one here and figured more people could take advantage this way.
Please let me know if I have posted in the wrong place...
Here's how to get it if you are interested... (takes maybe a minute)
1. Go to appsumo.com/minus-for-free/
2. Enter your email address (or "an" email address! You do not have to use a confirmation email, the link will be given)
3. Click on "No thanks, just checking things out." (right below the 2 big boxes)
4. At the bottom, click "Get the Deal"
5. Choose a password
6. Click "Continue to my Codes"
7. Copy/Paste the address for Minus
8. In box 2, (Sign Up - For Free) Choose a username and password. (email not required) Click Start Sharing!
DONE!!!
Note: The only issue I have with Minus.com right now is they do not support sub-folders, so organization is not as good as it should be. I did read that they are going to implement this feature though.
Note2: Yes, Appsumo WILL send you marketing emails now, but is is very easy to stop. Open their email and at very bottom click Unsubscribe! (I have an email addie devoted strictly for use with stuff like this...just in case!)
I hope someone finds this useful!

Thanks, worked perfectly
You are quite welcome! And thank you for taking the time to reply. I'm glad it worked for you! 25GB can be quite handy!
One other thing I noticed about Minus.com is they claim they will never delete any files (unless in violation of course!) Some of the most frustrating issues I have run into is when I try to download an older file and it is just....gone! The other big one is how much was lost to us when MegaUpload was shut down.
One of my plans for my Minus account is to upload EVERYTHING I have downloaded (ROMs, Mods, Scripts, files...) and kind of re-share everything in my phones forum. Plus its always nice to have everything for a particular device archived all in one place! You just never know when you will need something from the past, in the future.
YaaHoo! Finally made it to my 10 post limit!!
WONDERFUL
Thanks!! - I've been using dropbox for all of my file sharing and storing needs. However, this wipes the floor with it!!
Cool Beans bro! Thanks for the info, and congrats on the 10 post limit lol
Nice, thanks for the info. Could always use more storage
thanks for the heads up buddy.
How does this differ from dropbox? The main reason i use dropbox instead of other services like box, even though i get less space, is because of the integrated desktop folder and no restrictions on file sizes.
Is minus any different? Thanks again.
Minus has a number of tools available. Go to http://minus.com/pages/tools for the available downloads. They have an app for Android as well as desktop applications for Windows, Linux and Mac. (They also recently enabled a mobile web page for using browser from your phone). Not sure if that is what you are looking for.
In case it's not, I poked around a little and found some info in their forum (http://feedback.minus.com/). Notably someone wrote a prog/ext to support Folder Syncing. You can find the download and info here: http://en-minusfoldersync.blogspot.com/
As far as file size goes, they currently do have an upload limit of 2GB per file and 300 files per folder, but allow unlimited folders. They allow unlimited downloads/transfers and apparently will only throttle speeds when abuse is detected on hotlinked images.
If you are like me and primarily using this for sharing/storage of Android related files, I don't see many drawbacks. (Except for the lack of subfolders). Here are some links with some good information about their service:
http://minus.com/pages/help
http://feedback.minus.com/
http://minus.com/pages/tools
http://blog.minus.com/
Check the blog for latest features. The forum/feedback page is where I found the Folder Sync tool, and where you can submit requests/ideas and ask questions.
If you want to test download speed, or see what I'm doing with mine, (which is not much yet), here are links to my two folders:
http://minus.com/mEspressoROMs - Motivated by the loss of MegaUpload and all of the Mods/ROMs/etc that we may never see again, I have started uploading everything I have for my phone, kind of an archive...
http://minus.com/mEspresso - This contains mods I ported for my device. (All stock Froyo for MyTouch 3g Slide)
You can link to individual folders like this, or you can link to individual files. If they are public, anyone can browse/search them, if private, anyone can still access but only via direct link.
I hope this info helps you out. I have never used Dropbox, so I cannot accurately compare the two, sorry.
Hello dear xda users,
I wanted to transfer my WhatsApp to a new phone. I have created a local backup and transferred it to the new phone. Though WhatsApp doesn't want to recognize it and just prompts me for the google drive backup. The number stayed the same and in the past I never had problems with that. The same things happens on my old phone. So now I have all the data, but I cannot use it. It would be sad for me to lose all my chatlogs (6 years). So I wanted to decrypt the database with the help of https://andreas-mausch.de/whatsapp-viewer/. Though I haven't found a recent and decent manual on how to get the WhatsApp Encryption Key from the newest app version and newest Android (crypt 14). I can root my phone if necessary. So if someone knows how to do that, may you please provide a manual or point me in the right direction?
Kind regards,
sollo477
Ordinarily, you should be able to restore WhatsApp chatlog from your local backup.
I have the same problem... i can´t restore from local file, i spent all my SMS verification codes, i have to wait til tomorrow to try again... ;(

I know, it always worked before. But now WhatsApp is just stupid. I also contacted the WhatsApp Support. They were like: "Well...tough luck. We can't help you." Maybe they should just give people an easy way to make an unencrypted export of all chats. I did everything according to the manuals and then the restore of the backup doesn't work. You don't even get any pop up, if something was wrong with the backup file or that WhatsApp cannot find any back ups on the phone. I have Threema as well, but most people I know don't use it.
I am also facing the same problems since yesterday.. And i am losing almost 3 yrs of my important chats due to this careless whatsapp bug. Anyone please help me in this..

My backup database file is having crypt14 extension.. (usually it was crypt12) i already tried installing older Whatsapp version, rooted my phone and tried getting the key as well but whatsapp viewer saying invalid key as the file got skipped while authentication and activating whatsapp. Now i am stuck with a database file which i cant use and whatsapp is not at all concerned to help me with their system.
That really sounds like a bug. So maybe I should just keep the backups for now till they are old enough to be opened or WhatsApp fixes the problem.
I saw this fix on another thread and it works
Copy the files ("msgstore.db.crypt14", "msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt14"...) in "internal storages/WhatsApp/Databases" on your old Android smartphone
Create the path "sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases" on your new Android smartphone and paste the copied files there
Install Whatsapp via Google Play Store on your new smartphone
Open Whatsapp and verify your phone numer (you have to use the same number as on your old smartphone)
When it asked you to grant access to your files for Google drive, ignore the message and instead close the app (press □ and wipe Whatsapp away)
Activate airplane mode
Open Whatsapp again and wait until you see the message that scanning is taking longer than usual. Press "skip" (don't know the English word, I'm also using Whatsapp in german) and in the new message also press "skip"
You should now see your local backup, press "restore backup"
Disable airplane mode and activate Wifi
Ignore the message regarding Google Drive and, when your backup has been restored (look at the progress bar at the bottom in the background), close the app
Open Whatsapp again and you should see now your old and new messages alltogether!

WhatsApp cannot detect local backup file
I did a backup for my messages then uninstalled WhatsApp. The next day, I reinstalled it for a quick thing and it restored locally without problems then I uninstalled it again. 2 weeks later, when I
stackoverflow.com
@sollo47..Did you tried any of the methods above.. My WhatsApp is stuck for verification for next 48 hrs and i wont be getting sms codes to verify.
I just wanted to chip in to say that I am hitting exactly this issue right now. I wonder if it's a new bug in WhatsApp because just a couple of months ago I migrated really smoothly from my old Huawei P10 Lite to Pixel 4a and everything was fine.
Now I'm trying to migrate my wife from her Honor 9 (very similar to the P10) to a second Pixel 4a and WhatApp is being a nightmare! There are successful local and Google Drive backups on the old handset and all the messages are still present on that one, but when the new one restores from Google Drive, it only seems to retrieve the media files and none of the Chat history.
I've copied over the latest msgstore.db.crypt12 file but WhatsApp didn't seem to detect it and went back to Google Drive again. Now I've exhausted my verification options for a couple of hours so will have to wait (seriously! I've used 2-3 SMS codes and about 3 phone verifications trying to sort this out!!)
One thing I've noticed, which I really hope isn't going to be a big problem is that when it creates its own new database when restoring from Google Drive it's got a `crypt14` extension.
When I'm able to retry the verification I am going to try as above and put it into flight mode before attempting a restore so that it is forced to look at the local files for options.
Every other App on the damn planet includes menu options for both Backup and Restore, so what does WhatsApp only have Backup and make it damn near impossible to do a proper restore. :-(
I'll update with any progress.
Well... I'm no further forward :-(
I tried downgrading the App to 2.21.8.17 and then following these instructions: https://stackoverflow.com/a/67756993/4915304
By putting the phone into flight mode and skipping the internet checks the application _did_ then discover a local backup file however it then failed to Restore it :-(
There's a possiblity this failure was my fault... I've discovered that on my wife's phone there's an old Directory from 2020 containin backups, and then the external SD card has more recent ones... I'd accidentally copied the wrong ones, which I realised when it offered to restore the newest backup from nearly a year ago :-( So before accepting, I thought I'd try my luck and I replaced the msgstore.db.crypt12 via adb push to be the up-to-date one. I was hoping that it might not care. The reason for it failing was not displayed but now there's no option to restore unless I reset the app, which means waiting another 4+ hours before they'll give me a new verification code :-(
I also tried purchasing WonderShare MobileTrans as it claimed to be the only option to enable restoration of messages without reinstalling/resetting the installed application. Unfortunately that's of no use to me because it required the Source Phone to have WhatApp verified and active in order to capture the backup that it needs! Under the hood it's entirely reliant upon 'adb' access to the phone and I'm sceptical as to whether it will even work with the newer versions of WhatsApp.
On both the Android 8 source phone and A11 destination phone, it pops up with a warning that the application was built for an older version of Android and might not work ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm sooooo annoyed about this now. If it wasn't for the fact that so many friend and family are only using WhatsApp I'd uninstall it now and use something more open instead.
I had the same problem yesterday! Spent ALL DAY trying to restore my WhatsApp local backup (I've done it before a million times and no problems).
Looks like there is a problem with the latest version (2.21.10.16) restoring local backups.
I downloaded an older version apk (WhatsApp Messenger 2.21.6.17 from apkmirror) and copied to my internal storage.
Went through the normal process of instaling and verifying my number... IT FOUND MY LOCAL BACKUP!!!!
I thought I had lost all my chats from the last 4 years or so!
Try it and good luck!
@groovy909 and all others. Many thanks for help and all the hints here. After 24 hours of using hating speak, I was able to restore least 2 years old back up.
- the downgrade of Facebook Whats-app helped and I have least something.
Many thank for awesome community and please keep the great work.

Kind regards,
sollo477

My suggestion is to root your phone...it's way much easier to get the key.
Concerning whatsapp-viewer...I suggest you another parser for crypting/decrypting/viewing whatsapp databases: https://github.com/B16f00t/whapa
It works very nicely...one you have the key of course.

Anybody can decrypt msgstore.db.crypt14 ???
Hey guys, I was very busy the last few month and couldn't afford to lock myself out of WhatsApp again due to the limitation on the 2FA. So I have tried it as well with an older WhatsApp version from February 2021 and it still didn't work. I will go for the solution of rooting my phone once get the key and then unroot it again. Then I can use the offered Whapa Extractor to extract the old backup. Although since I can't merge the new database with the old one I will just keep the encrypted old database one for references. It's sad and I wish there would be another solution, since I am now forced to use google drive to backup my data for the future.
Unless you know a better solution to backup Whatsapp locally and can guarantee that a restore will be possible in the future. I would even pay for that.
Certainly, titaniumbackup is the best option.

Does it also work when I restore it to a different android phone?
