Great PPC Phone Edition SMS organizer tool, smsOrganizer for WM5 released! - General Topics

My readers (see for example this post) probably already know about two Pocket PC Phone Edition-specific SMS export utilities, Jeyo Mobile Extender (which, unfortunately, has severe problems with more than a few hundred SMS messages stored on a given PPC PE device) and Dopod SMS Backup, which is pretty simple and only supports exporting. There has always been a third alternative, zedsoft.net's smsOrganizer, but, up to now, it wasn't WM5-compliant and, therefore, I haven't reviewed it.
The author of the latter, zedsoft.net, has just announced the WM5 version to be out.
Give it a try - it's by far the most powerful SMS organizer I know and is really worth giving it a try. It's available here.

How do you completely uninstall this program?
I get a dialog box that says: _wfopen failed. MycreateFile TimeOut!
and then the program crashes. Was working fine for a while. Tried uinstall/reinstall.
I think what happened was i deleted the file(s) in the "settings" directory.
Should there be something there?
Thanks!

SmsOrganizer Uninstall/Reinstall problems
I had the same problem. Only installed to test it, but when uninstalled, it just does not either reinstall, if does install cannot run it. I get the same message, something "_wfopen failed. MycreateFile" . I also made the same mistake of removing the files from the settings. Although I tried to create the same name directory, but has not worked. It seems to be a nice application, something that I searched for monthssssssss, now that I found one, it has problems!!!! Also, when you install and run it the application icon "O" keeps on moving one space to the left every time you start it. Cannot wait to get it working again cuz it seems to be such a handy tool the way its laid out. You can backup all the sms or specify your own created directories. I have not tried to restore the backedup sms's though as I don’t have a second WM5 device. Would like to backup my sms's and everything else first before I flash the ROM.

Would someone with a pristine installation be so kind as to zip up and post the "Settings" folder?
I believe this will alleviate the situation.
I tried copying the "settings" folder included in the cab file, believe it or not, it almost worked i got a lot closer to loading the app, but am still getting an error.
Anyone?

So.. this prog is the culprit....

I installed this program sometime ago, but did not realize this is causing the _wfopen failed. MycreateFile TimeOut! dialogs... If you guys get this, it means you are unable to receive new SMSes. I experienced this for several days before realizing that this error occurs everytime someone sends me a new SMS. The sender may receive a delivery report, but the SMS didn't show up in the inbox, but gave the 2 error instead. Had to hard-reset as I didn't know this prog was the culprit....

smsCreative has been released!
Our new program - smsCreative v0.93 - has been released. This is an all-in-one SMS application for Windows Mobil PDAs.
We have put all our famous program (smsOrganizer, smsBackup, AllCleanup, smsRunner, StealSafe) together and rewrite almost all of the program code.
smsCreative has all the knowledge and features like smsOrganizer, but it works as fine as you wished to have by the first version already.
The full price will be 19.99 USD, but now you can buy the product only 9.99 USD during the beta period. Of course you will get all the updates later.
You can download, try or buy the product on our webpage (evolens.net) and you can follow all the changes we made in our product blog (smscreative.net).

Does it support Sheduled SMS sending?

WM6 Windows Update - files & settings required?

Now I know Windows Update on WM6 doesn't work for the Wizard - It connects to the m$ update site but doesn't find any updates. I tested this previously with the MB ROM and used a sniffer to see what was going on and it does indeed connect to the windows update site using HTTP.
In Faria's WM6 ROM he has removed Windows Update by physically removing some files from the ROM and deleting some registry settings as well as commenting out a line in the 'initflashfiles.dat' file. I have attempted to re-add Windows Update to his ROM with some sucess, however I am not quite there yet....
I have restored 'autoupdate.exe' and 'AutoUpdateRes_wpc.exe.0409.mui' as well as a registry setting [HKLM\System\Autoupdate] and it's settings and uncommented the line in the 'initflashfiles.dat' file to add the shortcut back. Now Windows Update is available and when I open it it opens OK but fails to connect when I select update now. It then sort of hangs and can only be closed using Task Manager or similar.
Are there any other files or settings that need restoring to get this back. I understand it doesn't work but my curiosity is getting the better of me
Thanks
Andy
I thought I read (maybe here) that when someone did the update, they actually had a theme file that was available and it downloaded that.
No packets sent?
I have been playing around with the Windows Update application and it starts fine. If I select 'Check Now' it immediately comes back with the Error screen telling me 'connection to update server was not available....'. If I click OK and then attempt to end the application it just stays on the screen and the only way to stop it is to use Task Manager and terminate the process
I have also put a sniffer on the port my Wireless AP connects to and cannot see the Wizard transmit anything when I click select 'Update Now' (I have verified I can access the internet with IE and I can see this OK with the sniffer).
Does anyone know what I am missing to at least get the Autoupdate.exe application to attempt to connect as it did with the MB ROM?
Thanks
Andy
Anyone
Can I bump this up as I want to get this working and re-added to my ROM (I know it doesn't actually work but I would like the functionality restored anyway).
I have restored the files:
autoupdate.lnk
autoupdate.exe
AutoUpdateRes_wpc.exe.0409.mui
Added the registry settings:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Autoupdate]
"DetectionCookie"="0"
"IntervalEndTime"=dword:f0
"IntervalStartTime"=dword:3c
"OmaDmSessionTimeout"=dword:258
"NextRunNormalInterval"=dword:93a80
"Automatic"=dword:0
"OTA"=dword:0
And restored the line to the initflashfiles.dat:
Directory("\Windows\Start Menu\Programs"):-File("Windows Update.lnk","\Windows\autoupdate.lnk")
There must be something else I am missing as it never attempts to connect and hangs when trying to exit the application. I restored the files from the MB ROM to Faria's ROM as he didn't include the originals.
Thanks
Andy
I would very cautious about re-adding windows update to a beta evaluation ROM (all our WM6 roms are!!!!).
It will do no good, only harm, I think, since Windows Update as well as a few other components in these beta WM6 are actually there only to call home and manage the beta evaluation.
My position of this is that you want to remove as much as possible all these pieces of software, essentially to avoid the call-home feature and the ROM expiration process, without breaking the ROM, of course.
So, I recomment to leave Windows Update out, SQM and other modules, ceipui, the remote provisioning mechanisms, etc. I've already talked about this in diffent threads, but I'll try to post a summary of my findings in the short future.
Regards,
--eluth.
I understand and accept the implications but I would prefer it if this was restored to my ROM.
I am just after some help as to what I am missing to restore this functionality
I have listed what files and settings I have restored but AutoUpdate is obviously missing something based on it's behaviour.
Anyone?
Anyone?
Anyone know what I am missing? Surely some of the cookers on here who have removed the Windows Update from their ROMs know what they removed?
That's all I am after; not too big a task I assume?
Andy
ADB100,
I could not tell you what is missing, but I do know that it is enabled in mUn's ROM. Because I did the same as you. Hooked it up to a sniffer and looked at the packet exchange between my Wizard and the MS update site..

It's enabled in the original Orwells, the MB Edition, mUn's and Faria's Vanilla WM6.
However I still can't find what I am missing to get it back in my re-heat of Faria's latest 'Real Thing'.....

you are missing SQM .
ps;
there is WM6 ROM for a windows ppc that has time bomb....plus microsoft can expire your rom by update if they want.... the update feature uses .pkg and this settings will stay after hard reset.... so they can use it for any means, and so can anyone that can compile 1 of those packages. just to let you know.

All the SQM files are present and the SQM settings in the registry are identical
What else could be missing?
Also, Which rom as the timebomb and how do we find it?
hi, anibody have this files:
autoupdate.exe' and 'AutoUpdateRes_wpc.exe.0409.mui'?
Thanks
I don't have it handy, but go find the original Ingenetics dump that was posted here (do a search) and I know it has those files in it.
Andy,
The original dump by Ingenetics was pulled a few days after he posted it. But I think this link has it. Good luck on your quest.

In which file is the call history stored?

Hi,
I would like to know in which file the phone (mine is an HTC Artemis P3300 = XDA Orbit with WM6) stores the call history (outgoing and incoming numbers).
I know that there are tools for exporting this data, but they are of no use for me now because my phone's display broke a few days ago, and all I have are the files that I could copy to my PC via ActiveSync (all except some that were locked).
If I know which one is the correct file, I could copy it to my new phone and retrieve the call history from there.
Thanks

I think all this is stored in PIM.vol, but I may be wrong.
I have written an app to read from it only, but all that is done via the API on phone.dll.
On the other hand, have you tried an app such as MyMoblier, it allows you VNC style access to your phone, you should then be able to install a product like PIM backup and backup you call logs.

Thanks!
Indeed I tried to use MyMobiler to install a backup program, but since MyMobiler was not installed on my mobile phone before, I never got it running. For a successful installation you have to perform some action on the touchscreen, but if the display is dark your chances are rather bad.
Happily, with the help of ActivSync I managed to save many files. And pim.vol was within those. I restored that file to my new phone and voila, my call history is there again!
By the way, that app that you wrote for reading pim.vol, where can I find it?

Missing file errors.

Whenever my phone wakes up from a sleep or I end a phone call, three error messages pop up saying that I'm missing three different files.
Yesterday, I installed some weather apps to try out, but I forgot to backup my regs. So when I uninstalled them, they must not have cleaned up too well and still try to run!
Three errors are:
Cannot execute \program files\Outerdepth\KPWeather\KPWeather.exe
Cannot execute \program files\nrg\chomeminiweather\weather.exe
Cannot execute \program files\nrg\chomeminiweather\monitor.exe
I searched the registry and found some registry entries in the Mort process key. Deleted those. Error still persists.
There is nothing in startup like these. No program files to look for because the folders aren't there.
I just want my phone to go back to normal. Preferably without hard reset.
Please help this fool. :'(
EDIT:
Forgot to say, I'm using a Samsung Omnia i910. Upgraded to compact.net framework 3.5, if that is relevant.
Perhaps this would be more appropriate in each packages
thread?
EDIT:
Please refer to these links respectively

Outerdepth Weather App: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3582982&postcount=132
Done with it.
I just decided that it was better to hard reset the phone. The trouble and hours I spent on this weren't worth it, and I just wanted to get back to enjoying my phone.
Maybe these posts will get some sort of exposure and have the problem solved so the next person can find it.
I went the same route and hard reset the phone as well. Oh well!
try reinstalling them and then uninstalling them using SKTools
oh.. and then perform a cleanup using SKTools
still..
.. after using SKtools on a Polaris (uninstall, cleaning up, in normal and safe mode, you name it) I still get the same annoying message.
is there any solution to this?
thanx
alex.
That annoys me totaly. SKTools don't fix the problem. I only could fix it with a dummy exe file. But don't have tested it. It would be nice if the coder of

Best Back Up? Question

After two weeks... and several soft resents and only two hard resets... I now have everything set up and working well and smooth on my TP2 (Sprint). All my email, preferences and setting are exactly what I want themn to be.
My question is. What is the best way to back ALL of this up. Is there a programs that can save this 'state' and created a sort of restore point; so that is everything goes kablooey, I can get the device back to this exact state easily? Freeware preferable, but not a must.
I know I am noob, but I am trying to learn so thanks. It was a long time coming and WinMo 6.1 is a so different to me that the Palm system I was using until now.
Please let me know... It is greatly appreciated.
Matt
As far as I know, you have 5 options
1) PIM Backup - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705
FREE
Really good at backing up ALL your text messages, contacts, appointments, etc. It can run automatically if desired. I've had issues when trying to restore emails and email accounts to my phone, but those aren't that hard to setup without it.
2)Microsoft MyPhone - http://sn1-p3.myphone.microsoft.com/mkweb/Start.po
FREE
Service works well. It backs up your info (Text, contacts, appointments, email) to the "cloud". It will even backup your files too, like photos and songs. You can also have this run on a schedule as well. Also has tools to locate your phone if you lose it (GPS location, make your phone rings even if it's on silent) but you gotta pay for them.
3) Flexilis Mobile - https://beta.flexilis.com/
FREE
Same as Microsoft MyPhone, but it's all free. They're still working on the GPS location function for the TP2, however their "scream" function is pretty cool, even works of the phone is set to silent too.
EDIT: forgot to mention, I wouldn't advise setting up the firewall on this program, I've had issues when trying to connect to ANY wifi spot (even my home's) when the firewall is on.
4)SPB Backup - http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/backup/?en
$24.95
Haven't actually tried this one but from the looks of it, it can backup "System Data" which I think means system preferences.
5) Resco Backup - http://www.resco.net/pocketpc/backup/
$19.99
Looks like it will backup EVERYTHING, the new version will also upload your backup to the FTP server of your choice. Haven't tried this one yet either
Also I know there is a program floating around the Rhodium forums that will re-installed ALL your programs. I forgot the link though.
I use MS MyPhone and SPB Backup... SPB is pretty easy to use, but so is MyPhone, but with MyPhone there have been some glitches in the past (which I experianced, like the contact restore issue) but those seem to be resolved now at least ( I know I havent had the issue again since getting the new version). SPB costs money, MyPhone does not. Both are simple, and easy to use. I would suggest trying them all, find the one you like best and stick with it.
I use SunnySoft BackupManager 4.x.
This software will restore you to whatever point in time it was when you did the backup. This software can be customized to backup the whole device or just parts of it.
I tried SPB on previous winmo phones and did not like it.
I also have had no issues with getting the software from 1 phone to the other. All it took was an email with my new phones key sent to them to get a new code for the new phone.
+1 for SPB its worth the money backs up and saves everything.
Sprite Backup isn't bad. Used it a lot on my MotoQ9c with no issues.

Yeah, just make sure you use the same version for restore as you did while backing up. Tried to restore my roommates palm treo (a couple years ago) and the program didn't want to because it said that the version I backed up with was to old.
+1 on SPB Backup. And when they say it backs up everything, they mean everything. Data, apps, the works. Great program and well worth the money IMHO.
I've tried Sprite Backup but it gave me problems. I tried doing a backup, reflashed my ROM, and when I tried to restore the file wouldn't work. All my data was gone. So -10 for Sprite Backup.
Sprite works for me
I've used Sprite on my Wizard and on my Fuze/Raphael.
This is the copy I'm using now, copied from my Fuze, and it is working fine:
http://www.mediafire.com/?jnxk4wzojh3
One thing you might find is that it usually works best to restore to a device that is factory fresh, i.e. hard reset to factory specs, or to your base ROM whatever that is. If you have a stock ROM you may get an error when you try to run the restore file directly.
I keep a copy of the Sprite Backup.CAB on my storage card, and load it after the hard reset, then use it to open the backup file.
If you have a cooked ROM you probably can just run the exe backup file.

I am think about this... but I have not the first clue on how to flash a new ROM, where to find one that is right... is there a faq on this whole process.
I just want a nice stable system...
My vote is with SPB backup.
It makes backups on schedule, I do one every day, then automatically copies the backups to my desktop when I connect it by activesync.
Smooth, reliable, I've restored 1/2 a dozen times without a problem.
Worth the money.

[HELP THREAD] export Whatsapp Key crypt14 Android 11 - decrypting database

Hello dear xda users,
I wanted to transfer my WhatsApp to a new phone. I have created a local backup and transferred it to the new phone. Though WhatsApp doesn't want to recognize it and just prompts me for the google drive backup. The number stayed the same and in the past I never had problems with that. The same things happens on my old phone. So now I have all the data, but I cannot use it. It would be sad for me to lose all my chatlogs (6 years). So I wanted to decrypt the database with the help of https://andreas-mausch.de/whatsapp-viewer/. Though I haven't found a recent and decent manual on how to get the WhatsApp Encryption Key from the newest app version and newest Android (crypt 14). I can root my phone if necessary. So if someone knows how to do that, may you please provide a manual or point me in the right direction?
Kind regards,
sollo477
Ordinarily, you should be able to restore WhatsApp chatlog from your local backup.
I have the same problem... i can´t restore from local file, i spent all my SMS verification codes, i have to wait til tomorrow to try again... ;(

I know, it always worked before. But now WhatsApp is just stupid. I also contacted the WhatsApp Support. They were like: "Well...tough luck. We can't help you." Maybe they should just give people an easy way to make an unencrypted export of all chats. I did everything according to the manuals and then the restore of the backup doesn't work. You don't even get any pop up, if something was wrong with the backup file or that WhatsApp cannot find any back ups on the phone. I have Threema as well, but most people I know don't use it.
I am also facing the same problems since yesterday.. And i am losing almost 3 yrs of my important chats due to this careless whatsapp bug. Anyone please help me in this..

My backup database file is having crypt14 extension.. (usually it was crypt12) i already tried installing older Whatsapp version, rooted my phone and tried getting the key as well but whatsapp viewer saying invalid key as the file got skipped while authentication and activating whatsapp. Now i am stuck with a database file which i cant use and whatsapp is not at all concerned to help me with their system.
That really sounds like a bug. So maybe I should just keep the backups for now till they are old enough to be opened or WhatsApp fixes the problem.
I saw this fix on another thread and it works
Copy the files ("msgstore.db.crypt14", "msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt14"...) in "internal storages/WhatsApp/Databases" on your old Android smartphone
Create the path "sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases" on your new Android smartphone and paste the copied files there
Install Whatsapp via Google Play Store on your new smartphone
Open Whatsapp and verify your phone numer (you have to use the same number as on your old smartphone)
When it asked you to grant access to your files for Google drive, ignore the message and instead close the app (press □ and wipe Whatsapp away)
Activate airplane mode
Open Whatsapp again and wait until you see the message that scanning is taking longer than usual. Press "skip" (don't know the English word, I'm also using Whatsapp in german) and in the new message also press "skip"
You should now see your local backup, press "restore backup"
Disable airplane mode and activate Wifi
Ignore the message regarding Google Drive and, when your backup has been restored (look at the progress bar at the bottom in the background), close the app
Open Whatsapp again and you should see now your old and new messages alltogether!

WhatsApp cannot detect local backup file
I did a backup for my messages then uninstalled WhatsApp. The next day, I reinstalled it for a quick thing and it restored locally without problems then I uninstalled it again. 2 weeks later, when I
stackoverflow.com
@sollo47..Did you tried any of the methods above.. My WhatsApp is stuck for verification for next 48 hrs and i wont be getting sms codes to verify.
I just wanted to chip in to say that I am hitting exactly this issue right now. I wonder if it's a new bug in WhatsApp because just a couple of months ago I migrated really smoothly from my old Huawei P10 Lite to Pixel 4a and everything was fine.
Now I'm trying to migrate my wife from her Honor 9 (very similar to the P10) to a second Pixel 4a and WhatApp is being a nightmare! There are successful local and Google Drive backups on the old handset and all the messages are still present on that one, but when the new one restores from Google Drive, it only seems to retrieve the media files and none of the Chat history.
I've copied over the latest msgstore.db.crypt12 file but WhatsApp didn't seem to detect it and went back to Google Drive again. Now I've exhausted my verification options for a couple of hours so will have to wait (seriously! I've used 2-3 SMS codes and about 3 phone verifications trying to sort this out!!)
One thing I've noticed, which I really hope isn't going to be a big problem is that when it creates its own new database when restoring from Google Drive it's got a `crypt14` extension.
When I'm able to retry the verification I am going to try as above and put it into flight mode before attempting a restore so that it is forced to look at the local files for options.
Every other App on the damn planet includes menu options for both Backup and Restore, so what does WhatsApp only have Backup and make it damn near impossible to do a proper restore. :-(
I'll update with any progress.
Well... I'm no further forward :-(
I tried downgrading the App to 2.21.8.17 and then following these instructions: https://stackoverflow.com/a/67756993/4915304
By putting the phone into flight mode and skipping the internet checks the application _did_ then discover a local backup file however it then failed to Restore it :-(
There's a possiblity this failure was my fault... I've discovered that on my wife's phone there's an old Directory from 2020 containin backups, and then the external SD card has more recent ones... I'd accidentally copied the wrong ones, which I realised when it offered to restore the newest backup from nearly a year ago :-( So before accepting, I thought I'd try my luck and I replaced the msgstore.db.crypt12 via adb push to be the up-to-date one. I was hoping that it might not care. The reason for it failing was not displayed but now there's no option to restore unless I reset the app, which means waiting another 4+ hours before they'll give me a new verification code :-(
I also tried purchasing WonderShare MobileTrans as it claimed to be the only option to enable restoration of messages without reinstalling/resetting the installed application. Unfortunately that's of no use to me because it required the Source Phone to have WhatApp verified and active in order to capture the backup that it needs! Under the hood it's entirely reliant upon 'adb' access to the phone and I'm sceptical as to whether it will even work with the newer versions of WhatsApp.
On both the Android 8 source phone and A11 destination phone, it pops up with a warning that the application was built for an older version of Android and might not work ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm sooooo annoyed about this now. If it wasn't for the fact that so many friend and family are only using WhatsApp I'd uninstall it now and use something more open instead.
I had the same problem yesterday! Spent ALL DAY trying to restore my WhatsApp local backup (I've done it before a million times and no problems).
Looks like there is a problem with the latest version (2.21.10.16) restoring local backups.
I downloaded an older version apk (WhatsApp Messenger 2.21.6.17 from apkmirror) and copied to my internal storage.
Went through the normal process of instaling and verifying my number... IT FOUND MY LOCAL BACKUP!!!!
I thought I had lost all my chats from the last 4 years or so!
Try it and good luck!
@groovy909 and all others. Many thanks for help and all the hints here. After 24 hours of using hating speak, I was able to restore least 2 years old back up.
- the downgrade of Facebook Whats-app helped and I have least something.
Many thank for awesome community and please keep the great work.

So if someone knows how to do that, may you please provide a manual or point me in the right direction?
Kind regards,

My suggestion is to root your phone...it's way much easier to get the key.
Concerning whatsapp-viewer...I suggest you another parser for crypting/decrypting/viewing whatsapp databases: https://github.com/B16f00t/whapa
It works very nicely...one you have the key of course.

Anybody can decrypt msgstore.db.crypt14 ???
Hey guys, I was very busy the last few month and couldn't afford to lock myself out of WhatsApp again due to the limitation on the 2FA. So I have tried it as well with an older WhatsApp version from February 2021 and it still didn't work. I will go for the solution of rooting my phone once get the key and then unroot it again. Then I can use the offered Whapa Extractor to extract the old backup. Although since I can't merge the new database with the old one I will just keep the encrypted old database one for references. It's sad and I wish there would be another solution, since I am now forced to use google drive to backup my data for the future.
Unless you know a better solution to backup Whatsapp locally and can guarantee that a restore will be possible in the future. I would even pay for that.
Certainly, titaniumbackup is the best option.
