Have my data plan blocked but still have data verizon?!! - General Topics

Hello all, I have my xv6800 on the verizon network and have data blocked. I found out today that I was able to access the internet using verizon data. I confirmed my wifi on the phone was off. I called verizon to confirm twice and they said it was off!!! Should I continue to use?

Are they charging for it? If they are, then obviously don't do it.

no they said I am showing up as blocked and 0 kb's. very cool but strange and bet they wil
l catch on

i called today, as im in need of a new phone, and they said that any of the smart phones/blackberries are required to have data plans, no if ands or buts. they said that if they try to block it in their system, it automatically reverts to having a data plan.
larry, please update us and let us know if they end up charging you at the end of the month

AT&T Data Charges?

I recently got an HTC Fuze with a new contract from AT&T... I opted not to get the data plan, because 90% of the time I have a WiFi connection, and didn't think the monthly charge was worth it.
Fast forward to today, and I have a $35 charge on my bill for 3.5MB of data. What I think happened, is that since I was a bit of a WM noob at the time, I didn't know to set the connection settings to default to WiFi instead of 3G, and every time a program tried to connect it enabled the data connection (even when I had it disabled in the connection manager) and tried to download through that. Now I know how to set it, but I still have this charge, for more than it would have cost me for a month of unlimited downloads. There was also no warning ANYWHERE that it would cost me money to use these programs.
Is there anything I can do to get them to drop it? I'd really rather not pay this ridiculous charge, and I don't plan on adding a data plan in the near future.
Also, does anyone know if there's a way to get AT&T to disable data on my plan altogether? I'd rather not have something like this happen again.
call att and tell them that this is your first time this has happened and you won't do it again. they usually take off the charge first time this happens. i'm not sure if they will disable data for you altogether, but there is a way to do this via your phone. Download and install the Diamond Tweak program to your phone and go to 6. Data and for 6.3 (Enabled: MEdia Net and Enabled: AT&T ISP GPRS), disable both of these. that should take care of it.
good luck with att!

Well, I've since HardSPL'd my phone and installed Elite RC3, and I think I have it permanently disabled.
I'll give them a call though, thanks.
Well, I just gave them a call, and the rep I spoke to said the best they could do is sign me up for 1 month of data, and credit me back the charges for last month. I pushed for a direct refund, but they said they couldn't do that, so I just bit it and signed up for the plan.
It would have came out to around $22 (i have a govt. discount), and he said it would be even cheaper because I signed up in the middle of the billing cycle. So all in all, I came out ahead, but I'm not sure if I could still have gotten the charges dropped outright or not.
Anyway, I now have unlimited data for the rest of the month... any ideas on how to use it? Can they detect tethering?
not that i know of
make sure u make the registry edit to enable it!

Don't get too greedy but as long as you don't download torrents or movies and stuff you should be fine.
I called and they removed Internet from my phone completely.
Just remember you can't send MMS messages if you disable internet from their side.
This happened to me when I had the Tilt and again with the Fuze. The stupid things are set to go out onto the internet automatically for certain features (like weather). When I get a new phone, the first thing on my mind isn't disabling the internet, so I racked up a few pay-per-use charges because I was silly and assumed the thing wouldn't go online unless I told it to. AT&T immediately applied a credit both times when I called, no need to sign up for a month of data service.
I currently don't have have a Fuze but am planning to get one within a month or so and the Weather tab had been a worry becuase I don't have a data plan at all. In the TouchFLO settings tab inside connections you can flip off the data service along with WiFi, & Bluetooth wouldn't that work as well?
FYI: Opera 9.7 is claiming a turbo feature to compress files to speed download times for mobile users & may help to squeeze that extra bandwidth for you
I was stuck with this same problem just recently too, however i still cant figure out how to disable the internet but keep it just for MMS. Can someone help me out?
Another thing to check is make sure AGPS is off. It will connect to data no matter whether you disable connections through Diamond Tweak or NoData.

[Q] Possible to use Android without any data plan at all?

I'm sorry if this has been asked already.
I'm very interested in getting a Samsung Vibrant. I wasn't a big fan of Android at first, but it's really growing on me. However, I have absolutely no interest in getting a data plan -- Everywhere I frequent has open wi-fi. If I got the phone, I know no carrier would let me leave the store without a data plan, so I'd just get one on eBay.
Is it possible to completely disable data, contact/email syncing, cloud connection, etc. and still use the full capabilities of an Android phone through wi-fi without screwing anything up? I've heard that if you don't have a data connection it's possible that your contacts will delete themselves when the phone tries to sync -- Is this true? Is there anything I should know about using Android without data, or are there any apps I should get to help with the whole process?
I have no data plan at all, G1 on T-Mobile. Vibrant shouldn't give you any problems, but if you're worried about contacts deleting (which has never happened to me), you can turn sync on and off, so just toggle it when you connect to wi-fi. Glad to see more interest in Android, hope you can make some contributions to the community.
Thanks for the info -- I didn't know you could actually toggle the syncing!
I hope I get more into Android, too. I'm a huge Windows Mobile person right now, but after looking at the Vibrant, I think I've been converted.
I also hope I can help in the community a bit, too -- I've been coming here for a long time, and I think you guys are amazing at what you do.

I'm sorry, I've got one more thing to ask: So can you disable ALL data, except for the phone data (calls, texts, etc.)? I can actually still get apps and do pretty much everything data allows all through wi-fi without any issues?
You can do syncing/cloud connection over WiFi too.
Thee other say my wife forgot to pay her bill.they shut her phone off.. Connected phone to wifi in the house and was able to use google talk email market... No text or calls though

well i had a first gen my touch 3g, i unlocked it and put it on att. what i endened up doing was i set up a different apn and since the settings were wrong i couldnt get on the internet. i could be wrong, but i think thats what kept me from getting on the net with it. and then i realized i had a data plan on my contract so i put the correct info for the apn and got data.
U can delete all your APN Info so that your phone will not be able to connect via 3G or Edge only with WIFI ;-)
Have fun with this great os!
There is literally an option in the network settings to disable the "mobile network". This disables internet/3g data traffic but does not affect call/text (that is not considered "data").
Also, Android actually disables the mobile network connection when Wifi is active (at least on CDMA devices)
Awesome, this is exactly what I was looking for. I have no idea why I was told it wasn't worth using Android without data - This all sounds like just what I had planned to do. Thanks, everyone! :-D

Relying on that alone won't work as soon as you get in the car with the phone...when it loses the wifi connection, it looks for a cell data connection again. You are right though, so long as it has a wifi connection, it doesn't look for 3G data at all.
People say it's no use having Android without data because there's literally TONS of awesome stuff you can do with data (Google Maps walking turn-by-turn, for example. And Zombie, Run!, which is the best game ever made). But if you're like me and are cheap/broke, or you just don't see yourself using data much, you'll be golden. But I think as you get into Android more and discover what you *could* be doing, you'll want to add data. I intend to put data on when I upgrade
i dn't have a data plan and when i attempt to use a data connection w/o wifi i get an msg from my provider (asking if i really want to and telling me how much it will cost). If your provider allows you access to their data network without you agreeing and then charges you that's pretty bull**** and i would definitely switch providers.

Skyrocket: no free internet access on WIFI??

(sorry I posted it in the wrong place so now re-posting it here)
Hi -
I just got this white Skyrocket phone with 200MB data plan.
I heard that when connected to 4G, the phone uses data allowance from the data package, whereas if connected to WIFI (like at home), the data usage doesn't come off my AT&T data allowance.
So I want to disconnect from 4G and connect to my WIFI when I am at home.
At the store, the just told me to make sure that WIFI is showing as on on the top bar (or when you swipe that bar down). They said if WIFI is showing on, it means that the phone is using WIFI connection.
However, I see that at the same time when WIFI is showing on, the "4G" icon is also showing on and looking active! So- they are both looking active! That's why I wonder which connection is my Skyrocket actually using?
It looks like the data I use on WIFI also comes out of my data plan because the data packet is on.
So I had an idea, went to settings-wireless-mobile networks and unchecked "Use Data Packet".
When the above was unchecked, 4G icon disappeared and I could see only WIFI icon on the top bar, which would be good - however, the problem is that now I cannot connect to internet. (I turned the phone on and off- no change)
Does it mean that there is no way on Skyrocket to bypass AT&T data allowance and whether I use 4G or my own WIFI, there is no free internet access on this phone?
Or is there something else I can do to make sure I am connected just to my WIFI and data is free?
I would appreciate your help.
Thank you
It just shows both icon to double check get speedtest and do one. You can see in results if you get wifi or 4g LTE.

They both should not show up at once unless something that needs access to att data like voicemail is checking for messages. Sounds more like either you are not connecting to your wireless router correctly or the wifi antenna is messed up on your phone.
Well sometimes for me it shows both icons in status bar. All i do is turn off wifi and turn back and the 4G LTE icon disappears.

Yea same for me but that means something is not allowing the phone to connect to wifi hence having to turn the wifi radio off n on.
Normally it shouldn't do that. Plus if op restarted the phone entirely and still no connection something is just not establishing the connection correctly
Well not exactly because i did speed test and i got my connection as wireless connection so for me it was fine with both icon.

Some functions require the data connection (mms, some syncing etc) and will trigger your data connection even when on wifi
If truly concerned use tasker or juice defender to disable cell data while wifi is on. Or manually turn it off
Or as someone else mentioned...you wifi is not maintaining connection

Not sure if this will help but there are many apps in the market to help with connection issues. I have two widgets that tells me which one im using and how strong they are just do a search for mobile traffic or cell /wifi. Hope that helps.

I think a lot of people are ignoring the op said no data is working at all when trying wifi.
Yes both icons will show sometimes because like mentioned mms, voicemail, etc requires it.
If the phone has no data period even after reboots then wifi is not connecting
Download "My data manager" from the market. It will show you your data useage, both wifi and data. Use that and check to see if you really are using your wifi or if its still using data.

Thank you for all your replies, each one taught me something about this new phone and I downloaded a few of the apps that you mentioned.
So all day I was being very careful about the internet, tracking my 4G/WiFi usage all day and then in the evening my kid pressed on a game icon and some kind of car game downloaded =adding over 70MB to my data transfer right away!! (and my monthly budget is 200MB)
It took a couple of seconds - he actually just pressed on the icon and then pressed home when he saw a car because he decided he doesn't want to play it. But it downloaded anyway! I am so mad!
I think it is unethical and very sneaky of AT&T to place all those unnecessary apps on the phone - especially if they turn out to be so costly.
So the only way to delete all those stupid apps is to root the phone? I am not a programmer and I am so afraid that I am going to mess it up
Don't need to root in order to uninstall apps just go to setting>application>manage application>Downloaded apps> and uninstall them. This is all the bloatware that you don't need so go through carefully and uninstall what you don't need. It will help you increase battery life.

I was hoping for that, but when I called AT&T, they didn't want to credit my account, just the opposite, they made me up my data plan to 2G. They said in the beginning people tend to use data more as they explore the new phone - in a few months, once I figure out my monthly usage, I can change my plan and go back to 200MB or whatever.
They also tried to fix my issues with internet (when only WiFi was showing -no 4G- the phone would not connect to internet). So they fixed it and now I have internet access when only WiFi is showing on the top bar.
On the other hand, now 4G completely disappeared! I haven't seen it all day..
Either AT&T is having technical difficulties or I got disconnected from 4G!
Sorry my advise didn't work but they should credit you since your phone malfunction, guess it depends on who you get guess it's a crap shoot.

They can't make you upgrade your data. The guy you talked to is just trying to rip you off so he gets commission for upgrading you to a "better" data plan. It's your account and you can pick what you want for it. If you want 200 MB then call and switch it back and say the last rep said you had to and made you do it.

Root Cricket wireless galaxy s7 help/advice

Hi I have been trying to figure a way to root my galaxy s7 without losing the fingerprint scanner, losing samsung pay, or without tripping Knox. I want to tether, but my carrier doesn't have it for my unlimited data plan. I was thinking root it then put the stock image back on it to try and "untrip" Knox, but I don't want to if it won't work. I have the Cricket wireless SAMSUNG-SM-G930AZ which is the Galaxy s7. I also am having trouble finding the stock image for my phone in the first place. I can only find images for other versions of my phone not mine. Please help me. I have tried foxfi, but it doesn't work and none of the other tethering app work either that's why I want to root so I can try a tether app that only works with root.
Why root when you can spoof?
This is probobly way too late but might help someone trying to tether there "unlimited" data from mobile carrier to PC. It's called your "User Agent String", Google for a technical explanation but basically you go to what'smyuseragent.com and copy your U.A.string then on your PC go to Chrome extensions in download user agent switcher or spoofer there's multiple and follow the directions to spoof your carrier into thinking you're using your phone when in actuality you're tethered to your PC through whatever app FoxFi etc. I believe once you normally tether it creates a second IP address which is how the carriers notice and stop you. I apologize if this has been in other threads had no intentions taking credit for this method it just worked great for me when T-Mobile used to offer unlimited data 90 bucks a month a few years back after I used 300 gigabytes they let me know I was no longer eligible for this plan I've been crying ever since

Get NATIVE Hotspot Working with Unlimited Data (No Root) on S8

Video instructions are linked below.**
Hey, everyone! I just wanted to share something that I figured out when I was trying to enable my WiFi hotspot on my S8. First of all, I have an AT&T Galaxy S8 (G950U) with Unlimited Data, and my hotspot doesn't typically work at all. When I try to enable it normally, it has to "verify," then it tells me I need to subscribe. However, while playing around with Package Disabler Pro and the hotspot, I figured out how to get the hotspot turned on (running off of unlimited data) without root or any sort of complex workaround. The only things you'll need are a $2 app, ANY WiFi source (even locked), and a supported carrier on your S8 (AT&T, Verizon, and others). Here the steps to get it up and running:
1) Download Package Disabler Pro (by policedeveloper), get it up and running, and search for "tether" in the seach box
2) Three options should pop up ("TetheringProvision", "TetheringAutomation", and "com.qualcomm.qti.tetherservice"). Disable all three packages.
3) Go to your Mobile Hotspot settings and make sure WiFi Sharing is turned ON. Very important.
4) Go to your WiFi Settings and connect to any WiFi network near you, but PURPOSELY put in the wrong WiFi password. It will try to connect for a short time, so you need to be quick on the next step.
5) Quickly enable your mobile hotspot while the phone is still trying to connect to the network with the wrong password. After the hotspot turns on, quickly turn off your WiFi. The hotspot will stay on and continue to run off of your unlimited data!
I actually tested this last year on the Galaxy S7 edge on AT&T, so it works on there as well! I've uploaded the following videos to YouTube as well for the S7 and S8 respectively, so if this helped you, be sure to go click on some ads on my YouTube videos! It helps me out lol.

It's worth noting that I'm actually not sure how many carriers this works on. I know it doesn't work on Sprint, but lately it actually started working on Verizon too. I've had some people tell me that it works on other smaller carriers as well, but if it works for you in a different carrier leave a comment below so I can see how many it works on please!
Not seemingly working for sprint. No matter how fast I swap to disable the wifi, if the wifi is disconnected, hotspot it turned off.

Yeah, unfortunately it won't work on Sprint. Turns out they have a different way of checking to see if you're subscribed to tethering. I did find this thread several months ago dealing with getting the hotspot turned on with Sprint though. Check it out and let me know if it still works if you don't mind:

In an OTA update last Friday, Sprint locked down the ##DATA# method and settings are now grayed out for me. The previous Shortcut method I'd used to edit APN settings wasn't working either. I did come a different Shortcut Master search string which allowed me to get in and edit the APN, however. I don't know why from one view it works, but from the other it did not. If memory serves it was looking for LTEfunctionality.
These carriers need a swift kick in the ass for disabling features on these phones.

Oh, I see. That sucks! I don't have a Sprint Galaxy phone, so I can't test anything out, but I wonder if it's still possible through that different search string. I don't really know how any of that works though. What I really wish would happen is for Samsung to actually stand up to these carriers and not keep taking their BS. However, even Apple, as great as they are at this, blocks the hotspot on certain iPhones depending on the carrier and plan...

Yes tf they do. Samsung needs to learn from Apple and stop taking the carriers' BS. That right there would solve a problem a lot of people have with Samsung, but of course they're not going to stop.

U r correct, the ltefunctionality is the place for editing the apns. Search the sprint thread as this method has been posted several times using quickshortcut maker app and searching test to find the directory. Click try then look for lteapn settings and add dun to the default, mms. It should look like the following.... deault, mms, dun
Any prl or profile updates along with android os updates will undo this. So each time any of those update redo the above steps. I'm on 10gb hotspot and have used it for 3 weeks last month with Bill showing no hotspot data used. I'm on sprint
You should've bought an unlocked S8. I have unlimited data on AT&T with an unlocked S8 and the hotspot works just fine.

Does this method show as you using hot spot and they charge you for using it? I have the unlimited data plan but I am not paying the extra for the hotspot feature because I think it is dumb and should be free anyways as a feature of the phone so I refuse to pay for that service. I have ATT.

Well cool. I got it to work. I haven't had much time to test it but it seems great.
On Verizon s8 anyone figure out how to get this working. Can't find app "TetheringProvision" or anything similar to disable on my VZ s8 phone.
I found "TetheringAutomation", and "com.qualcomm.qti.tetherservice" and disabled. It still checks subscription and fails.
Thanks!
Solution: Switch to Tmobile

You can get your hotspot working by popping sim tray, unlock phone, open up stopwatch, insert sim tray and start stopwatch at the same time, when the stopwatch hits 8 seconds turn on hotspot from the pull down menu.
I know it takes some work but works every time for me. I will try to post a video for anyone who wants. Working on my verizon s8+. Thanks!

I thought for sure that this was going to be a joke to see how long I would sit there popping my sim and launching apps and such, but WOW.
It actually worked on my third attempt ( VZ S8+)
Thanks again for posting this!:good:
Too easy I just went to Settings > Apps clicked the
overflow menu to show system apps and forced stop tetheringprovision and tetheringautomation. I also disabled tethering provision's access to change system settings.
My hotspot worked right away I'm on ATT UDP
has this stopped working after the lastest ATT update
