How to connect to GPS? - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Themes and Apps

I just bought my HD2 yesterday, and I installed Garmin XT on it. However, I can't seem to be able to connect Garmin XT to the GPS that is the HD2. It keeps ending up with "GPS Intermediate Driver" as the setting. Unfortunately, it never seems to find any satellites at all with this setting.
Has anyone else installed Garmin XT on the HD2? What GPS settings are you using?

No one has gotten Garmin XT to work on the HD2?

I'm guessing you're not using a purchased version of GMXT?

It is registered to me.. Otherwise, I'd need a Garmin GPS to get it to work. I've also checked the Wiki, and it says that it will work 100%, but I don't know what settings I need to use to get it to connect to the GPS.

Hey, you need to run HTC's QuickFix tool which is available through the start menu.
After that the fix is faster.
I am using Garmin Mobile XT without any problem, now I get a fix even inside a room (even if it is slower). Near Windows I still have 1 peep of signal.
The intermediate driver is good, as it allows you to see the signal strength.
But I did have issues on my Blackstone with Garmin, sometimes the fix wouldn't happen for some reason or it could take very long.
Have you set your location to a particular city through wireless connection?
I used ROMs 1.43, 1.48 1.61 and 2.01 with their respective radios and all were pretty equivalent in terms of GPS fix.

Thanks for the info. I'll try that and see if it helps. What puzzles me though, is that it doesn't seem to find even one single satellite under the "GPS Info" tab.
On my old PPC which had a separate SirfIII chip built-in, it would immediately latch onto at least two or three satellites, and you can see the strength varying as you move.

Quickfix solved it! It's working fine now.

Glad this worked.
Garmin can be a bit picky in terms of satellite fix, but in my eyes it is the nicest navigation program and the only program to have maps for all parts of the world including asia and Japan in particular!

garmin working flawlessly on my device from day 1 .
nice software not very attractive graphic
but its good in doing job ..............

My Garmin XT also works well on my new HD2. All but ONE problem, NO SOUND! Installed, re-installed, uninstalled, deleted, installed.... nothing. Worked fine on my TYTNII. Other sounds work fine, like ring tones, MP3's, etc... Checked volume is set as single slider and is at 80%. I installed Basemap files first, then support files and then the actual app... license files are in place and it picks up the internal GPS fine. Can't believe how FAST it gets a fix on this phone, even inside!

Sorted... it was a setting in the Sounds and Notifications... silly me... GARMIN XT works VERY nicely on the HD2. Loads almost instantly and gets a GPS fix almost before the app finishes loading. AMAZING!

GPS + MapKing

Hi guys! I can't seem to get a GPS signal on my touch cruise using Mapking!!
Is there any programs out there to check if my GPS device is working fine ?
I think my GPS unit is spoiled! How come ?!
Anyone have this problem before ? I even downloaded a separate program call GPS Viewer and it didn't seem to get any signals at all!
Daft question, but have you gone through the setings to make sure the gps is turned on.
Also go outside to get a lock on the gps, its works better.
Did you check the GPS settings in the control panel?
You have to set and then provide the correct COM port in order to get any GPS software to work with an in-built GPS device.
its on auto detect. And previously i was using it perfectly well! it just happened today! Then i have no idea why...
Did you update QuickGPS? Unless its broken, the GPS unit will eventually find a signal. It just takes a while (up to 3 minutes) which might be longer than the timeout in the app. If you update QuickGPS, then it will find a signal within 30 seconds usually. Perhaps your QuickGPS download is past expiration date. Usually, its set to get new QuickGPS data everytine you active sync by default. maybe you havent' activesync'd in a while (last week or so) or you need ot manually update it.
Mapking Fix
Look on Mapking's website:
http://www.mapasia.com/AD/HTC/HTC_TYTNII_ENG.htm
They're reporting a bug and a link to a fix for the gps in HTC units that shipped with their software bundled.
Hope this helps.
Lom
I'm using MapKing 2007. Not the MapKing R12 that came bundled with it...
And i try to use with GPS Viewer that has nothing to do with Mapking and it also didn't detect any signals.
Could it be the hardware has spoilt ?

How to test the gps?

What is a good program that works with the TP so that I can test to see if my built in gps is working correctly?
I have TOMTOM7 installed and the application works but I can never see any satellites.
I tried mapopolis but i can't seem to establish a connection to the gps.
I updated the gps info using quick gps.
What com port and baud rate does the unit use?
What settings should I have in the "external gps" settings?
Thanks for your help!
Use the attached program to test the GPS.
It will search COM ports automatically
But I guess you can know the port from the settings tabs "External GPS" icon if it's like Kaiser
Anyway, I will be of further use in like 4 days

ok it seems its on com 4 with baud rate of 9600.
ill put it by the window and see if any satellites come up.
The screen just right now says: GPS starting up
Edit: ok great I just got 3 satellites. I guess it works!
Great that it works
You need at least 4 though to get a fix
Kindly, post your radio info and your location and let me know how many satellites did you view (press up on dpad as the 1st screen shows only upto 8 and it can see more, hopefully)

posting the number of satelites you receive is a bit pointless.
This will depend on many factors such as
1) The number of sats viewable at any given time in your area (the sats are not geostationary and therefore move around)
2) The location of the sats during the test - some could be close to the horizon and therefore have a week signal
3) Weather conditions, cloud rain etc,
4) Terrain
etc
etc
Basically, you are right.
But if you are fast enough, you can test several radios in the same 10 mins.
And you can judge by testing in the same place which radio is better for GPS (Fix & View).
A mention of your location will be a referrence for others.
There's a thread with more radio fuss to hold such info to be useful in the future.
Hi pjmiebach - thanks for the hint and the software - I get 4 satellits (yellow beamer) but when I tryit again with Google Maps it finds no Satellite ???
Any explanation from yur side ?
as a matter of fact, on-board GPS works with just about any baud rate you select - so choose the fastest

errr It worked find with TOMTOM7 after taking like 15 min to find it's first fix. Never tried Google maps yet cause my data plan doesn't start until the 8th of Sept.
you can start google maps and check in the right menu for gps and tap that one so it uses the internal gps instead of internetconnection.
it is also a good idea to goto connectionsettings and wipe all existing connections as activesync wont require these and you can download them later from the provider website or by running the carriersetup
ok. ive broken something on my raph. gps was working fine when i flew up to sydneyim guessing ive fiddled with something (external gps setings) and now no worky. tom tom7 is set to internal. if i disable external gps gpstest pauses on com 3 but nothing. if i turn windows on. it stops on com 4 shows some progress bars but they are all at 0 ive soft reset. taken the battery out canter figure out whatsoever wrong. any ideas would be awesome
TT7 and google maps
My tt7 takes 2 - 3 minutes to get a fix.
Google maps takes about 10 secs.
If i start tt7 right after i used gm it takes about 20 secs to get a fix.
I'm gonna try gpsgate and changing the baudrate a bit, see if it helps.
I'll let you know.
** Edit **
GPSGate does the trick for me.
Buy it at your fav appstore and create a new virtual com port for all NMEA progs, go to tt7 gps settings select other nmea device, select the com you just created, at max speed.
com port problem

Me too! :-( No, I really do not enjoy hard resets...
Another nice GPS testing software is VisualGPSce. Be sure to get that.
I wonder if the problem was with QuickGPS. VisualGPSce was telling me that it "saw" 11 satellites, but wasn't able to lock onto any of them. I know that it had worked previously, but then I had a couple of days break and QuickGPS had updated it's data during that time. After the Hard Reset, I haven't used QuickGPS.
About the performance... seems to get fix quite fast, but looses them very easily too. I tracked today a half hour buss ride and I frequently lost the connection. (Sure it was not the most optimal situation...). Also the accuracy wasn't that good - well, either the GPS or Google Maps. actually VisualGPS showed that the GPS wasn't very accurate in following what was happening. The velocity would go to 0 only about 10 seconds after the buss had stopped at trafic lights or buss stop. Actually the buss frequently took of before the GPS showed us stopped. And then it was extremely slow on catching up. On Google Maps you could see the dot still advancing when the buss had stopped for that 10 seconds. Completely off the road - but that might as well be Googles error.
I do not have TomTom on this, but certainly the speed accuracy from VisualGPSce is not nearly as accurate as my TomTom 720.
Check also that the assisted GPS is not active.
If this option is actived, you lose the signal each x seconds.
To check this option I use Advanced config.
Note : I've a Diamond and one Raphael, same configuration, the Diamond find a fix into 40sec and the Raphael takes sometimes 5min!!!.

i find this to be true as well but the kaiser gps radio worked far better than this touch pro in every app I tried. I can put the TP in my car window and get a signal with random disconnects but if i put it in my lap i cant get anything. I could put the kaiser in my trun and be fine lol. Hopefully some upgrades to the radio software will be coming soon. Same result with me with .19 and .31
Hello,
I tested GPSTuner 5.4, VisualGPS, GoogleMaps and TomTom 7 and I have a strange problem... I installed thos programs after hard reset to be sure...
In the GPS information window the GPS position changes but the speed is always 0km/h and in TomTom or GoogleMaps my position on the map don't move...
Have you seens this problem ?
Any kind of solution ?
PLZ....
PS :
Where can I find rom &Radio version ?
What is your TomTom 7 version ?
Hello All..
this is my first post. I just received my TP today via Vodafone. I havwe sucessfully loaded on TomTom 6 and I have it working with the TT external GPS receiver.
can someone advise me whether the Touch Pro's internal GPS will work and if so, how do I go about setting it up.
PS, I only see 4 options in TT6, and none say internal.
Thanks in advance for any assistance

O2 XDA Serra (Touch Pro) - more GPS problems

Sorry - not a development issue as such but I'm hoping you guys can help with another HTC Touch Pro (A)GPS query. I have read a number of other posts on this but they appear to be inconclusive and I'm not sure if the problems widely reported elsewhere are supposed to have been resolved in the latest shipped ROMS.
I'm experiencing very long acquisition times with the internal GPS on the O2 XDA Serra (just released in the UK), to the point where the GPS is virtually unusable. Cold lock can take anywhere between 15 and 30 minutes, even in open ground in good weather with a clear view of satellites. By comparison, a Garmin eTrex Vista in the same location gets a lock in seconds. I never expected the XDA Serra to equal the performance of a dedicated handheld GPS but I would have expected it to get an initial lock in less than 5 minutes in clear sight.
If and when a lock is acquired, it seems to hold OK and I've experienced no major lag problems.
I'm using Tom Tom Navigator 5, Memory Map Pocket Navigator OS 5 and Google Maps. I've also installed a couple of GPS utilities from this forum - Chartcross GPS Test 1.04 and the HTC GPS Tool v1.1.1.0. These are all configured to point to COM4 at 38400 baud (as per advice in this forum), and I've never had a problem detecting the GPS.
What is bizarre and frustrating is that there is absolutely no mention of GPS functionality in the supplied O2 manual, other than a brief warning about not operating a GPS while driving. The XDA Serra is not supplied with any GPS software or utilities out of the box other than an "External GPS" utility in the System folder, which is completely undocumented. I'm unclear in what circumstances you are supposed to use this utility, but I'm assuming it allows you to set a hardware COM port for an external GPS device (presumably bluetooth?) and select whether or not it is managed by Windows. I've tried turning this off but it appears to make no difference.
I'm aware that the XDA Serra is AGPS capable but I'm unclear exactly what this means in this context (i.e. which particular AGPS technique it actually uses), and how - in the absence of an explicit Program or System setting - my installed GPS applications are supposed to invoke it. I have checked the relevant registry settings in HKLM\Software\HTC\SUPL AGPS:
EnableAGPS 0x00000000 (0)
GPSMode 0x00000002 (2)
Number Fixes 0x3b9ac9ff (9999999999)
QoS Accuracy 0x00000032 (50)
QoS Performance 0x00000059 (89)
Server IP 10.1.101.63
Server Port 0x00001cb6 (7275)
TimeBetweenFixes 0x00000001 (1)
... and can see that the AGPS function is currently disabled (the default), but is this supposed to be enabled programmatically by the GPS application, or do you have to set it explicitly? If the latter, how can you do this other than by hacking the registry?
I have followed advice in this forum about disabling GPS logging (it was disabled by default) using the Schapman Advanced Configuration Tool v3.3.0.0. I have tried enabling the AGPS function using a registry editor, but again it appears to make no difference. In addition, I could see no evidence of it having downloaded an emphemeris file anywhere (unless it's hidden in system ROM), which I presume is how it is supposed to work? If I enable it, doesn this necessarily mean that any of my GPS apps will actually use it?
I have tried using SeaSGEE to download emphemeris data to no avail - it downloads what looks like a good packedEmphemeris.ee file OK but it makes absolutely no difference to performance. I have since uninstalled this and deleted the //windows/packedEmphemeris.ee file.
Finally, if I connect an external bluetooth GPS adapter (the Emtac BTGPS) on COM6 I generally get a good cold lock in less than a minute. I used this all the time on my old XDA Mini S (HTC Wizard) and never had a problem.
So, basically, I'd like to understand how native AGPS works on the Touch Po, how it is supposed to be invoked by GPS applications, and whether there are any tweaks I can try to improve performance over and above the ones I've already tried. Is this a problem that is likely to be improved in subsequent ROM or Radio versions or is this simply a fundamental limitation of a crappy internal GPS chip?
Any advice greatly appreciated.
AGPS
AGPS is basically a utility for operator to be able to track your device for various local ads etc. It uses servers to track instead of GPS.For example Google maps would be able to track your position inside building but with tolerance of a few miles (I guess it is your closest tower) Seems to be some kind of bug when operating with regular GPS (in my case it shuts off GPS every 10-15 seconds making Tomtom unusable. You should see settings for AGPS at Settings-System-AGPS. Disable both tabs. On tomtom use other wired GPS receiver at Baud rate 38400 com port 4. restart after setting AGPS. It did work for me.I have Fuze - same as HTC Touch Pro. Let me know if it works better.
This is exactly how the Fuze is acting. Cold locks (after a soft reset or power off/on) take up to 30 minutes to get. But once you do get a lock, things work as they should. Even AT&T sales reps sat there with me, with 3 different Fuzes and witnessed all three phones doing the same thing. It must be the built in GPS chipset. The Sprint Touch Pro I had for a week, never had any cold lock issues.
I was worried that O2 had modified versions without the GPS module becuase I have never managed to get a lock with the device. Nomatter what I do GPS doesn't seem to work.
It is annoying as I've managed to fix every other problem the Serra ships with. Including getting rid of the default home page for opera when launched vial TFL3D. That was a huge pain in the ass as the XML file cannot be deleted or modified easily, it is an undying file. Damn file protectiona and access rules on WM devices.
is there still isues with gps on this phone?
i'm due an upgrade, currently using a diamond, and find gps is fantastic, locks in a couple of seconds nearly everytime, even after not using it for week still seems to get a fix in under 20 seconds, was looking at the touch hd as i thought it was essentialy the same phone, buf beefed up a bit, but i use gps 3-4 hours everyday, so far this phone seems perfect apart from the gps issues..
i've tried searching but can't find any clear information about it, seen various tweaks but no one can confirm it definatly works, my phone's primary use is gps, would i be a fool to upgrade to the serra?

OK. I had the same problem, never got locked on GPS.
It is ALL software issue. Flash different rom, new radio (recommend 20M1) and use tomtom7. Older tomtoms for some reason do not invoke gps receiver on touch pro. GPS on serra works perfect, on mine it takes about 20-30 seconds to get satellite lock. Relax Just flash rom different that the o2 one.
The GPS is rock solid on my XDA Serra with fast GPS start-up times with the PROven ROM - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=444653.
I did have GPS problems with the standard O2 ROM, as others have said it's a software issue.
All issues have been SOLVED
Hi. just go to this post and you will have a gps lock in a matter of seconds. enjoy. thanks

Yes I just updated my ROM and the difference is HUGE. Almost instant connection with my GPS.
Yes, apparently O2 removed QuickGPS because at some point they planned to enable their own AGPS servers, but did not get round to it and forgot to add back QuickGPS.......

Att Fuze Lacks GPS Fix

I've searched the forums but have not found a specific answer for my problem. I have an Att Fuze with no data connection. I use Wi-Fi for Internet. I recently installed Garmin XT software on it. The software runs fine and stuff only I can't get a GPS fix at all. It will search for bluetooth or whatever and then nothing happens. I'm outside, in the car, no where no signal. Program port is Com4, hardware port is none and 4800. Quick GPS has also been updated. HTC tech support is no help either. Can anyone help me? I would appreciate it. I jsut need the GPS fix so i can start using it. I would prefer not to install anything or do any resetting of the device. Thanks
no one has any suggestions?
you have to run GPSTest - if you search for it you'll find it.
ok i will download it. what will this tell me? on my fuze when I look at the garmin software, it says that it is searching bluetooth. You also see (instead of seeing reception bars of the gps) a bluetooth symbol with a magnifying glass. what's that?

Hi,
U'll need to set the hardware port to something ... as long as any program accesses the GPS without the GPS having access to the antenna, u'll never get a fix. Suggest hardwareport set to COM8, softwareport to COM6...
Dirk
everytime I try to set the hardware port and press ok, it just keeps reverting bac to none. it wont keep the setting.
I tried this program called gps test to test out my gps. i have a couple of green bars. it says currently (im in the top floor of my house but not directly at a window) my fix is 3D and the hoop is 2.40 and the gps is running. tried running this software in the background with garmin but no luck. I think the problm is the garmin software. but 3d means im locked onto 3 satellites right?

3d means u're viewing at least 3 sats, so the navtool can calculate ur position with reasonable precision.... with 4 sats, it even could calculate ur altitude (if possible in the navtool)

GPS on AT&T Fuze with ROGERS?

Hey ive unlocked and flashed to a sweet NRG rom and love it. I just want to use google Maps (or something similar) to find my position on a map (turn by turn maybe?). I remember with my iPhone when I first had it the GPS worked great then one day I was never able to get my actual position (just within a certain amount of meters).
Did rogers shut down GPS?
Now on my new phone when I goto "GPS location" in google maps it searches for a satellite but doesnt seem to get my position (0)... Is there a setting I can turn on to allow GPS or do I need to cal rogers and rip on someone? LOL
keep up the great work guys!!!

I just turned 3g on and did the HTC GPS tool. I opened the port and started the test and then menu-Information and I dont seem to have a position.
any ideas guys? seems like rogers problem.

GPS on the HTC is using the basic GPS Signal coming from satellites. Are u outside or near a window to a fix ?
Look http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Positioning_System
What u used was A-GPS what is assisted GPS with help from Cell Phone provider. It gives faster fix and a pseude gps in buildings.
Go outside with ur cellphone with clear sky view, start the htc gps tool and u should get position fix within some minutes or even seconds. There is no need for 3g because the gps itself does not need any cellphone connection. It takes satellite signals to calculate the position.
When u update quick gps it is faster in the position fix because it already knows some basic sat data. But still no phone connection necessary for using GPS.
The google map u then only see with data (3g or wlan) not because of the GPS but because of the drawed map graphics wich have to be loaded.
ok i will try the outside thing although I have the phone pointed to the window pretty much. Checking rogers website both phones only have a-GPS but I still cant get an actual location on either. Only about a 4 block square or circle.
EDIT: ok i enabled A-GPS on the touch pro and still no luck with google maps. It still seems to be looking for actual GPS
OK im managed to get it working. I changed the port to com5 and scanned found some sat's I had to change the bit thing to 56700 on com5 within google maps. Seems to be working like a charm!
