QWERTZ bug in danger spl? - G1 Android Development

Hi, i stumbled upon a problem which noone else seems to notice.
I appplied the danger spl to gain more space for my apps.
Since then im using a qwerty keyboard layout instead of qwertz. Y is replaced with z, umlauts are broken, etc. Took me a while to find out its the spl. First i thought its the rom but the only way to get it fixed was to roll back to hard spl. i have two questions about this: wth has the spl to do with the keyboard layout and is there a way to edit keymap files in /system or something to workaround the problem? Strangely the usual keymap settings there dont seem to do the trick.

You usually need to do a wipe after you apply a new SPL

may i suggest using apps2sd for more space for apps. danger spl is only used to allow larger roms to be flashed.

Well, i have the same problem. How can i change the layout?

The problems does indeed lie within the "Danger" SPL. But you only need to change the keychars file. No need to switch to another SPL, or install some apps2sd gibberish.
http://www.mediafire.com/?tdnna5atnzn
Download the file and move it into the tools folder of your SDK. Now use adb to push the file to the device.
ex.
Code:
adb remount
adb push trout-keypad-v3.kcm.bin system/usr/keychars/
adb reboot
Done.

shane, of course i did a wipe before
joe, im aware that i can store apps on sd, but i simply dont have a class6 card atm and the danger spl worked fine except for this phenomenon. also i wanted to try a hero rom, which was the first reason to flash it. but since it gives me a double sized data partition, why dont use it anyway? hell even the browser temp files can fill that partition quickly..
ah thanks bavilo. i think i tried that before but maybe i did something wrong
edit: YEP ITS WORKING, thanks! =)

Extended ROM for WM6 ATT ROM

Hi,
I have my Extended ROM writeable and have installed software to it, but after the second or third app, it said 0kb free. I looked and I couldn't see my program folders. I soft-reset and viola' Nada... Everything's gone and I'm back to the regular ATT Carrier crap.
Any ideas? Did I miss something here that's different with the WM6 ROMS?
Thanks,
classic symptom of not having the ext rom open for writing.
Okay, can I ask steps to open the rom for writing?
It seems odd that progs can write to it at least for a little bit.
Thanks,
get the zip file from message 14 on this page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=343713&page=2&highlight=cappackage
run the first cab, do a soft reset.
run the second cab, do a soft reset.
write to the ext rom, do a soft reset. if the file you wrote is still there, your set. if not re-run the second cab till it "takes".

New to G1

Good afternoon to the G1 community. I just purchased my G1 yesterday through Tmobile and I have a couple question.
I just came from using a wing so I am pretty savy with wmo rom flashing and whatnot, but android is completely new to me. Now, of course i want to get the most out of my device. I must say, out of the box it is by far the best device that I have used. Even so, i know that there is some stuff that i am missing.
I have done some reading here in the forum, and i do know how to search, but im not clear on a couple things. For starters, I have been reading about Rooting my device. Now to be totally honest with you, i've read through the Rooting Thread but only walked away with I would love to have autorotate for my screen! I mean, truely what are the benefits to rooting the phone? Will i loose access to the "market" or loose any other functionality of the phone as it is now? Future updates?
In a perfect world i'd love to have the auto rotate feature.... the ability to change the way the program list slides up to maybe sliding panel, and an onscreen keyboard (such as chompsms) when i select a line to type in (whether im in the browser or anyother program.)
I Love the phone as it is.. so all in all, what functionality would i gain, and what would i loose? besides warranty of course
I apologize, i realized i may have put this in the wrong section!
1. Rooting you phone allows you to basically use it to the best of its capabilities. For example, you can change themes, boot image, auto rotate, multitouch, etc. You won't lose the market or any other functions after you root the phone. (To my knowledge, I see paid apps and such just fine on my phone.) You will continue to see future OTA updates, but if you download them, you will lose root access for your phone.
2. The "Cupcake" OTA release is planned for April (As has been discussed on the forums, may be true, may be false. TMobile is claiming its false, but Google controls the updates) If we ever recieve this update, then we will be able to get things such as an onscreen keyboard.
3. I'm not sure about changing the order of the way the apps are presented on the slide-up menu, but there are apps like ahome or dxtop that have alternate home styles, such as the "Iphone" style horizontal scrolling or multiple menu tabs.
Thanks, I do appreciate your prompt response!
if you want the best out of your phone root it.. but thats completely up to you.. when you root you'll be able to get the latest builds from JF anyway soo you'll never be out on whats new.. if anything you'll be a couple steps ahead of regular g1 users at all times
Just to verify.... The market is still available for apps after rooting.. Now I will loose root if I download from the market or just the "OTA" updates for the phone?
Also, i was going through the instructions for the process and got to the point where you upgrade to the latest build. So, i assume RC33 is US Tmo vs RC8 being for UK. What is ADP1.1? So is my choice between ADP1.1 and RC33?
you shouldn't even recieve an OTA update notification if you follow directions, so you don't have to worry about that, and many apps on the market are actually FOR root users and only root users so you will not lose market obviously. the greatest thing about getting root is that you can basically make your phone do anything you want(so long as you are comfortable with linux commands and aren't afraid to temporarily "brick" you phone) but even if you kust want autorotate you will need to root the phone and you will need to grab a JF update. there is an app that someone has written, almost completely idiot proof rooting, and i am trying to help it to be COMPLETELY idiot proof, if you want to try it out search app that roots your phone and it should pop up
Ok, so I have decided to go ahead and play with this and see what there is to offer.
I have successfully downgraded to the rc29 firmware and verified it in my phone. Now I have also done these instructions to get root;
Rooting your RC29 or lower phone:
On RC29 phones and lower, anything you type into your keyboard is also being run in a hidden console with root permissions. More information regarding that at the bottom of this post. But, to get root access, do the following:
Instructions:
Download recovery.img and copy it to your SD card (see the previous instructions on how to copy from your computer to your Phone's SD card).
Download the Hard SPL and copy the zip file to the SD card.
All files must be on the root of your SD card.
Restart your phone. Wait for your phone to start up fully and show the home screen.
After your phone starts up, hit the enter key twice, type "telnetd" and press enter. (Yes, it will start up a contact search, don't worry. Just type it.)
Download an Android "Telnet" application from the Market and connect to localhost.
If you connect successfully, you will have a root prompt "#".
Type the following into Telnet (these commands will give you root access easier in the future):
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cd sdcard
flash_image recovery recovery.img
cat recovery.img > /system/recovery.img
Now of course i dont know if it was successfull cause it doesnt tell you. Now here is my problem. I am trying to upgrade the rc33 now but with NO LUCK! Now the instructions say to download the file, rename to update.zip and go into recover mode and run update. However it keeps giving me the error "Can't open /sdcard/update.zip (bad). I have downloaded two copies and this happens with both and the radio version.
What am i doing wrong? I have tried to rename the file on both the phone and the computer, with the extension .zip and without it but with no luck. I have the file directly on the root of the sd card. Do I need any other files on the sd card? or just the zip file?
I have read and read, but I have not found a clear explanations.
I'm not on a G1 (I'm on a Google dev phone that came rooted out of the box), and thus haven't gone through that process myself, but I seem to remember reading something about having to go through RC30/JFv1.3x and THEN to RC33/JFv1.4x. Not RC29 -> RC33/JFv1.4x directly.
I could very well be wrong though.
Ok, well I did get it to install.. still working on it...
Definitely wierd. I'll update when i finish!
I successfully went from rc29 to rc33 v 1.41 but realized that the newest is 1.42 so thats loading now.
Its odd, it seems that my problem was when i was in recovery mode, I would alt L to bring up the menu and alt s to update from sdcard. It didnt work for nearly 10 times.. then all the sudden instead up alt L to bring up the menu, i just did alt S and it booted. I didnt realize that linux was that sensitive! Other than that, i'm about to play with the new firmware.
So there is no way to get an onscreen keyboard like chompsms? I kinda found that hard to believe.
while it is SUGGESTED that you go from 29 to 30 to 33(what ever happened to 31 and 32?) it is not necessary, i am gonna assume you are on windows and you may be naming it update.zip.zip because extensions are hidden. try it after just naming it update, and also make sure that you unmount the phone correctly after you put the file on there, a lot of times it is still writing data when you yank it out, and that will cause the (bad) error. hope this helps. if you get a file not found error after naming it update then just put the .zip extension back on the file and make sure you unmount properly

This, and maybe you've downloaded the 'build environment' package.
At my first attempt I got the 'bad' message, too. I didn't know which one to pick up so my first try has been 'ADP1 build environment'. Later with 'ADP1' (not the build environment one) no problem. Now I'm going with the UK because I wanted the UI in german and because some market apps didn't download with ADP.

The .odex files are missing from /system/app. This means that the .dex files are created in /data/dalvik-cache when the phone boots. If you run
Code:
du -h /data
you'll see that the dalvik-cache folder takes about 30 MB space.
Hope this explanation helps.
Damn
So does that mean have to keep the pavlik folder? or is there a way to remove it without vaporizing the OS?
Thanks for the quick response by the way

I seemed to get 5.0.2 installed fine, but some of the text is displaying in funny characters? Any ideas?
hmmmmm
not sure. Maybe a quick wipe, reroot and install? Im not exactly sure waht u shud do. I had jf rc33 running on my g1, then i downloaded the 5.0.2 h rom and renamed to update.zip and flashed the update. Maybe restart it a few times. Also i think theres a thread somewhere saying theres a side update that cancels out chinese characters or something like that

Can't do much. That folder is needed for the phone to run.
One option is to move it to sd card.
Read this topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=504235
it's default fallback font's problem. you can get the original (DroidSansFallback.ttf) from a jf build and push it to /system/fonts (you probably won't have enough space to do so though)
the new build is so big that the original system partition cannot hold it anymore, so the haykuro decided to delete many things to save place, including the .odex files and the full version of the fallback font.
Do I HAVE to do a wipe before flashing the Haykuro ROM?
I'd prefer to keep all my data and apps.
5.0.2H bluetooth
Hey all everything seems to be working fine with 5.0.2H on G1, however bluetooth is still a little quirky. Seems to connect in stereo and headset, but no audio from bluetooth or phone.

any request?
Is this the JIME used in the ntt docomo Magic?
By the way for those who are thinking about installing this IME, it requires 11.4MByte of /system. Make sure you have enough space.
Also, can we get some screenshots?
Screenshots.
Here are some screenshots =]
Comes preinstalled with skins, and english keyboard is T9 style. Works very well. Please note that if you install this using adb, dont forget to use ADB REMOUNT, then run the .bat file.
Packaged update.zip installer. 11.4MByte of /system required! Check with df before using. Also requires testkeys to be installed (in other words you need to be "rooted")

Oh that is a VERY handy tip. Even though i've memorized the kanas, I still prefer to use alphabetic input. They even have a keyboard for fixed-width alphabet! <insert Japanese asciicats here>
Sorry for forking off discussion in Dream. Didn't see you already had a topic going on in Sapphire. I'll mark this thread for merge but I don't know how readily the mods will be to cross-subforum merging.
Feel free to link to the premade updater I posted above as well, if you like.

Highly unlikely, unless OMRON soft do it themselves.
Can you use the physical dream keyboard with this ime? <---Yes you can.
In order for it to work, you need to bring up the touch screen keyboard,
select romanji-kana input (the あ on the 文字 buton on the bottom left)
Slide open the physical keyboard
****touch the text field**** it will not work otherwise. An あ will show up in the upper left of the notification bar
Then type away.
i have only tried this on atk notepad, and sms so far.
P.S.
THANKS GUYS
I have been waiting for this for a long time.

It says bad signature or something along those lines? What Android build are you using? The update is signed with testkeys so it will only work on JF, haykuro, dude, etc. Won't work on official build. If you're still getting errors, try re-downloading the zip file. I have personally flashed it myself so I can guarantee that it works.
By the way, you must MUST verify you have enough space before installing if you are gonna use the update.zip because I don't think the recovery tool will throw an error if you run out of space. It just silently fails (i think).

It didn't even say that, just "bad". If it was "bad signature" then I would have half comprehended it. I'm using Ravenge's Rogers Mod, so it is definitely rooted. Strangely enough though, I tried again this morning to see what the actual words of the error were, and it worked. To an extent.
Now I can select the IME, but if I try going to its settings it does nothing, and when I try typing it just comes out normal. Closing the keyboard and touching the screen brings up nothing: no keyboard or anything...
Any help would be appreciated... If its unsolvable though, would I be right in assuming if I was to reflash the ROM I'm using, it would regain all the /system space lost through flashing the unusable IME?

If you type df in Terminal Emu how much space do you have left in /system?
You can always reclaim all the space taken up by removing the files manually-- no need to reflash. Just remount /system as rw and then rm the applicable files from /system/lib and /system/app

Missing apps after HERO upgrade

I was wondering if anyone else was running into the problem I'm having, and if it has been covered before and I missed it in the search box earlier I apologize. I just recently tried to upgrade to JACHero2.6 and my market app (most important) along with several others are missing. The apps are automatically installed on all my other roms, it is only with hero that I end up missing alot of apps. I have a correctly formatted SD card and I did a wipe before I installed this and tried the whole process twice. If I am forgetting to do something special prior to installation or afterwards please let me know!!

you may have gotten a bad download. try redownloading it again. do you have 3 partition (fat32 ext2/3 linux-swap) if not i suggest that for jac's 2.63 also make sure you check file extensions in recovery screen. hopefully this helps
Yes I have my card that exact format and I tried using the filesystem checker in the recovery screen it said filesystem check was complete!! I'll try doing the whole process over again but I'm not sure how that would help, and it is sad too this is the best damn hero rom i've tested to date, its fast as hell!! If it weren't for my apps not being here i wouldn't be planning on a future rom update in the near future or until some big release happens.
make sure you always check md5 sum of all your hero build download
you could of had a damaged downloaded rom and this could affect your rom.
Just tried to download a fresh copy of the rom, checked to make sure my sd card was working properly, wiped and re-flashed yet my market app and the same apps I was missing before is still missing. It should be included that apps on my ext2 were coming back like they should be just not all of them, and not a few apps that I thought should be included with the rom. Is there anything I should check that I may not have yet?
I would use Root Explorer to check if the apk files are still under system/sd/app if they aren't... well, there's no way you're going to see them again unless you re-install them. You can also look under system/sd/app_s if that's there. Other than that, if you can't find it, it's not there. (If you know the exact name of the file or at least part of the apk file name, under terminal type: find "file name" (w/o quotes ofc)
You can add wildcards (*) if you don't know the exact name of the file. If the apk file is still there... well... let's just see if its there first.
I checked using terminal, I typed "vending.apk" and tried to check the dir's you specified for the apks. If they are there I can't find them, although I am a bit limited as terminal is the only app that came loaded with which to check for files. If the apk files are indeed not there then why would the apps install on their own without a problem on any other build but hero??? I must be doing something wrong right? I am open to any suggestions at this point, even using a different rom to check for something, my goal is to have this rom flashed with my apps working soon!
heres the vending.apk from jachero 2.63 you can try and adb push it to /system/sd/app_s and see if it works.
Thanks, I'll try pushing that over but I'm still worried about the rest of the apps I'm missing. Would there be anything else I could try to make it possibly fix all the missing apps? What could be causing this problem in the first place? I did notice that my sd card has an ext2 rather than ext3 part, will that cause all of this to happen? I'm still pretty lost on this. I tried going back to another rom just to make sure my apps would still all pull up correctly, and they did so it has to be something related to this most recent build of jachero, or something
welcome to the club my friend (-;
i have the exact same problem and noone was able to help me yet.
It must have something to do with Jacs apps2sd method. i read some tweets between him and cyanogen that it might be a little 'rough'.
however - it's always the same apps that are missing, in my case it's (badly enough) launcher.apk AND rosie.apk which pretty much means that i can't solve it.
i also tried everything i could with ADB - without luck. I somehow have the feeling that theres something staying on the phone even when wiping and formatting.... I'll check this through ADB this evening.
look @ my recent posts:

for previous moaning from myself ( (-; ) and discussion with others in the JACthread. Basically the last 15 - 20 posts are about nothing else (-;
I will also do some logcating today - i've already seen the errors through install (rosie.apk couldn't be parsed etc) but i forgot to save it (and the command promt only saves 100 lines or something)

Just tried opening the update.zip file and verified that all the apks are there. Which makes me wonder what exactly is up. Im thinking it could be an apps2sd issue, like what was said above. I didnt have this problem with older hero roms that i can remember. TBH I could try pushing apps with adb but that wouldn't bring back my other 3rd party apps floating in ext2 limbo. So I'm out of ideas ;(

try going to the recovery console and entering upgrade_fs and that will change your ext2 to ext3 and see if wiping and flashing change anything. also if you have root explorer you can check your /system/sd folder to see if all of your third party apps are there
Just tried upgrade_fs and it gave me a "unable to allocate block" I noticed there is little if any room left on the ext2 partition. Would that cause all of this? If not would it be worth a shot to resize the partition and give it more space from my fat32 then try to upgrade wipe reload again?
If you're out of ideas, then I would attempt to resize first (but backup your fat32 first) and then see if that solves it, if not, then I would format, wipe, and update...
but are you sure those 3rd party apps are not there? Try using Root Explorer to determine if the 3rd Party Apps are there, if they are, just pull them to your sdcard and try installing them again with ASTRO or something like that.
