Windows Mobile Phone for visually impaired - General Questions and Answers

I have a rather unusual question for the members here. My sister is completely blind and I have been looking for a phone that would help her in every day tasks. I have found a program called Mobile Speaks that works on Windows Mobile phones that reads the screen out loud for the user and the same company produces a program called Mobile Geo that works with Mobile Speaks and the built in Microsoft Voice software to help visually impaired people navigate with a GPS receiver. So I am looking for a GSM Windows Mobile phone that has built in GPS receiver that she may be able to use. The biggest thing that I'm having difficulty finding is a phone with a keypad that isn't completely flat so that she can feel the difference between the different keys. Ideally I think it would be easier for her to have a typical 10-key or 20-key and not a QWERTY only phone. So if anybody has any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone use this software with the touch cruise?
I have been an avid user of this software for a long time now, and it just seems soooooo slow on the cruise.
I was previously using it with an HTC Apache and it seemed much more responsive...
Anyone else have similar issue?
========
Update: I enabled turbo mode and edited some other settings and enabled data compression and it seems to improve the functionality.
Hope this helps someone else
I've been using 6.01 build 1256 on my Kaiser and now for some weeks on my TC and it's performing the same, fast and good.
No problems at all here.
I'm using it with an Orbit 2 and it seems fine to me, just like the Orbit, TytN and Tytn 2 I've used it with. The only niggle is that I use it to type out SMS messages when I'm at a PC but the word suggestion feature on the Orbit 2 (which seems to be a replacement for the usual Windows Mobile one), gets in the way a bit so that I have to type s-l-o-w-l-y or it drops characters. I'd love to know how to switch the Orbit 2 back to using the normal word suggestion thing.

The skin for the Touch Cruise?
It won't let me download it either...you have to have a "registered version" of the program and have a valid lisence to download skins for the updated phones...it's not a big deal though, I just use the default skin, it looks fine.

I've registered it so I've got the skin, but TBH I always use it with the skin feature turned off anyway, it's too much window around the screen. The phone is usually close enough to hand to press the physical buttons if I need to.
I have got skin on all possible to phones but Cruise far from it nor and registered PCP Shall I
Can you please help me with Pocket Controller.
I just installed it to both Pc (and when connected the cruise with USB active sync) , to the device. I can not connect to the TC.
When I press Connect it tries to oconnect:
Please Wait...
connecting using LAN/WAN...
connecting to 169.254.2.1...
establishing connection...
But nothing happens. not connection at all
thanks
There are other alternatives like EveryWAN RemoteSupport
Do you think that a free tool limited to cable/USB remote control of a PDA would be useful ?
e.g.: the product referenced here: EveryWAN RemoteSupport, is capable of much more, but I could decide to make a free version to help developer community.
The product which is designed to work over cellular networks and wifi would be restricted to cable/USB connection and totally free of charge or time-bomb.
PS: I am part of the company making the product ... which is a companion to our flagship Mobile Device Management and security product called EveryWAN MobilityManager

Not to be a stickler, but I don't think uploading the skin onto here would be a good idea, since you can only get it if you have the registered version of the program.
EveryWan looks like the Enterprise version of pocket controller..
It looks very interesting, and I'm glad to see that there are people making amazing software like that for free.
Personally, I do not need all of the extra features which is why I'll stick with PCPro, and also the reason why I didn't download the enterprise version.

Okay... look here for all the apps we use on our hd2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=603880
On Windows Mobile.. you can look for apps outside of the "marketplace".. you download them as a .cab file (on pc or phone) and place them on the sd card if you want... which out the box is unique to windows mobile (doesn't eat up phone memory (but not that we lack it on the new hd2 lol))
Once the .cab file is on your phone/sd card... in the phone you go to file explorer (in the start menu)... click on it and navigate to where you placed the .cab file and run it. You can save the installation to the "device" because there is plenty of memory and tends to run better.
To awnser your questions;
[1] Google voice idk, but im sure google will have a wm app out soon (if not already, im not 'in' google voice so dunno)
[2] Last.fm Googling around a bit i see they (or someone) released a windows mobile app in 2008, but all links to it trow a 404, so check out their mobile forums, specifically this sticky
[3] Pandora, just read this; http://www.pandora.com/on-windowsmobile (Point your mobile phone's browser to www.pandora.com)
[4] Incomplete emails Thats just a setting since most people use gprs/hsdpa, im sure you can change it, either somewhere in the settings or trough a registry edit
Though i just have to say/write this, DONT GET ME WRONG but honestly, you shouldn't try to make this like your iPhone, although Microsoft/HTC are clearly trying to 'collect' some iPhone users, overall the HD2 isn't user friendly enough to be a iPhone (yes i sayd it) That doesn't mean you shouldn't stick with the HD2 though, just forget the iPhone
To put some strength behind my 'user friendly' statement, if your ROM is from before 1.66, the HD2 will have quite some silly bugs, like SMS messages that get stuck in the outbox but only (if your lucky) send 3 weeks later, problems with the camera, not beeing able to read/write large miniSD cards & more.
On the other hand, if your in any way IT related or just in general good with computers, this is currently the best phone on the market (counting HD2 and HD2b as one) it does the latest wireless connection methods, has build-in gps, compass and g-sensor, a 1ghz gpu, a 'gpu' (kinda) and more geeky features, and hey, it can emulate most psx games at full speed (www.fpsece.net)
I'd just strongly suggest you to get a new ROM from the HTC site, assuming you have a device with pre 1.66
I hope the above helped a bit, not trying to make windows mobile even more confusing for you, just trying to tell you that it cant really be compared to iPhone/Android, it can be compared to windows, there are actually millions of apps, nobody ever felt the need for a windows marketplace until iPhone got one and Microsoft had to compete, at which they currently fail hard i agree, the windows marketplace thing is a joke, just use google.

Theft detection software with GPS

So far I've found three programs that will detect an authorized SIM card, send an SMS to a specified number, along with GPS coordinates. These are:
Mobile Justice
Ultimate Theft Alert
and W.I.M.P.
What would you guys recommend? I'll be getting the Touch Cruise soon, if that helps.
Thanks in advance.
Try remote tracker
Sprite Terminator?
What's the latest and greatest FREE app for theft recovery?
At this point I am looking for WinMo 6.5
I cannot seem to find WIMP (Where is my Phone) anymore with a current version?
http://www.mylookout.com looks cool.
If I wanted to pay, I would get the McAfee WaveSecure.
I like the idea of someone putting in their SIM card and SMSing their number etc to a friend of mine.
And turning on GPS itself to help track it.
THANKS!
TheftAware
For Android, TheftAware offers a comprehensive solution.
I believe that it meets all your requests, and on rooted devices, it can install itself into the system area, so it is not as easily detected and removed.
With this product, you do get what you pay for.

Hello girls and boys,
Like you, I was yesterday looking for this frantically as I have just got an Android device as my work mobile and have an old Windows Mobile 6.5 phone (Touch Pro2) as my personal mobile which runs Microsoft Voice Command 1.6 and can do quite a bit without needing to touch the handset (illegal whilst driving in the UK). I have to say; I was finding it difficult to believe that with all the awesome power of a Desire S when compared to the TP2, why is it I can't find an offline voice command application? Google's Actions are great yes, but does it REALLY need server side processing for these commands? I then came across a forum where someone suggested Vlingo and no-one really acknowledged the post. What a great app! Totally free, works with bluetooth headsets and actually does speech to text as well WITHOUT needing to be online.
I suggest you guys take a look as it seems to be a great piece of software that's pretty well written. http://www.vlingo.com

[Q] How to activate voice commands?

Hi everybody,
I am new to this forum and I have hesitated for a long time before I signed up. The reason for my hesitation: I didn't want to start off crying for help. Nevertheless here I am. After about a week of searching the www I thought what the heck. That is the purpose of a forum, share knowledge.
I am a (German) retiree living for many years in El Salvador, I’m old but because of my curiosity I feel quite comfortable with modern technology. I have installed and configured Garmin Mobile XT (which I found on the web while looking for answers ) and it works perfectly.
For about 10 years I have been a customer of TIGO (Millicom) and never got anything for free from them. So I decided to ask for something and I got a free Phone (he who doesn’t cry, doesn’t suckle ). It’s a Samsung SGH-i637, non-touch-screen, in your neck of the woods known as Jack (internet wisdom) and distributed by AT&T and with a certain keyboard layout (AT&T button).
The OS is WIN Mobile 6.1 Standard and I want to use voice commands. Every lead I found refers to that particular button to activate that option. Now, my phone doesn’t have that button, it has the Windows Live Messenger button instead which, surprise surprise, takes me to Windows Live Messenger. Some people said to look in Start-Settings-System. No such thing in my phone either.
Just as I have surfed the net for days I have done the same of all the menus in my phone.
Now my questions:
How to access that option?
Does WIN Mobile 6.1 support that option?
Do I have to upgrade to WIN Mobile 6.5?
Is an upgrade recommended? (Pros/Cons)
I really hope that some merciful soul can take this burden off my shoulders.
