I pose my question in regards to the extensiveness of a Nandroid or a Bart backup and restoration. I suppose my question stems from my lack of understanding on how they both work and the flashing process of ROMs.
My question is as such:
If I were to create a Nandroid/BART backup with radio and SPL version "A", and then changed/updated to radio and SPL version "B", would there be a need to revert back to version "A" before I can restore the Nandroid/BART backup?
I have had fun playing around with different roms, by creating Nandroid backups (my thanks to Amon_RA for his wonderful recovery and infernix? for nandroid script) and restoring them to try out all the little things. Might I add to the utter discontent of my partner for my phone always being in the "stupid black screen with little full stops" and her inability to call or use it.
I'm currently using the GYD rom. Content. But I'd like to try Cursor sense or the AOSP 2.3 rom and have not ever touched Radio or SPL flashing before.... I want to make sure I can revert easily before I tread into a brave new world....
Thanks
Ice.
For the AOSP 2.3 you don't need to flash a new radio/SPL. For cursorsense you do (so don't do it ;-))
Sound advice! haha

Hi there. I just recently was toying around with my hone, rooting it, installing some ROMs and stuff. After flashing the ion revision2 ROM, my phone would not go past the rogers screen. Being my stupid self, I never backed up with nandroid. What should I do now? Please help.
Make a Nandroid backup in future. Anyway, you can find a wiped Rogers stock rom here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=534464
I got my phone July of this year (ROGERS 32A) and immediately researched and successfully applied fatality's hero ROM... (rooted phone as well)
Recently my personal phone has turned into my work phone, and I've now added a 3G data plan (was previously only using wifi). Since I've been using 3G data, I've really noticed the short comings of this ROM (SLOW), and am now looking for a ROM that's basically:
A stock version of Donut with perhaps some small tweaks (multi-touch support?)
I've looked around the forum for a bit, both browsing and using search. Apparently I'm not as technologically savvy as I thought I was, as I just ended up getting fairly confused.
One of my problems is not remembering what I exactly did to get the ROM on my phone in the first place.
To put it simply my few questions are as follows:
1. If I don't remember what I did to the phone in the past (I do remember that the radio is still stock), will I be able to do something in the future that will mess up the phone?
2. I currently have sdk 1.5 installed. Do I need to upgrade to 2.0?
3. What's the best way to backup my call logs and sms messages? (hopefully a free version). Will this backup method work when going from a hero ROM to a near stock version of donut? (this is important as I have a lot of sms messages that I need to save)
4. Can someone recommend a near stock version of 1.6 that is de-branded and stable? (with all standard features fully working... maybe with multi-touch as well?)
5. Is there a good newbie guide for accomplishing this task? I seemed to find a few stickies, but I remember when I flashed this phone to begin with, there was one thread that was seemingly written for the mentally challenged (which really helped me accomplish the flashing task and made me comfortable with taking the leap)
Thanks for your help!
I've always used AmonRa's 1.6.2 with no issues.

1. Yes. I'm pretty sure you won't have any problems. I didn't (stock 32A from HTC).
2. No. But it won't hurt either. Just do it.
3. Search the market. I use Mybackup Pro ($2, methinks). There are some apps which do backup just the call log and another for SMSes.
4. Cyanogenmod ported for 32A. 2.4.9.1. Find the thread describing how to upgrade. You need another update (the 32A port which grants you working wifi).
5. I would try cyanogenmod.com - look for the wiki. And look through the two threads I mentioned.
Per.

yea.. amon's ion is great. u shud try it.
Amon_ras or the cyanogenmod ported for 32a. I prefer cyanogenmod.
I have never touched my radio but I have an engineering spl. that is not required though. To use the.32a port of cyanogenmod you need to have a recovery that can flash any zip, not just those named update.zip
Thanks for the suggestions... I really appreciate it.
Ok first off I have to say that this site is great I have found alot of helpfull and some confusing topics here lol. the other day I downloaded the cyanogen mod 7 and everything is working perfectly on my htc evo sprint
my only problem I noticed is that I dont know how to revert back to The HTC Sense ui. My other question is that I noticed alot of different roms on here and some I have tried installing but some wont work for me and some freeze when i attempt to reboot. Can anyone help me out please!!!
To revert back to Sense from Cyanogen, you'll have to reflash the ROM that came stock on your device. You should be able to find this in the forum for your device (EVO).
There are many different ROMs available here, some will work for you and some you may experience difficulty with. Most Devs usually post step-by-step instructions for installing their ROMs in the Opening Post (OP) of the thread. If you follow these you'll usually be fine, and you can always flash back to stock and start again if you get into trouble.
Good luck, and welcome to XDA
Did you do a nandroid backup first? If not, you should always do one before flashing. If you did, just restore through your recovery & you'll be back where you were before.
If CM7 is functional but you just don't like it, I would go ahead and do a nandroid backup anyway, so if anything messes up you'll at least have something working you can restore.
If you want something like stock, I would suggest the Sprint Lover's Rom. Myn's Warm 2.2 would also be good, or you could try out Warm Z which is the new version of Sense. I'm assuming you like Sense as a UI & as a launcher?
I've heard great things about Mikfroyo as well. If you're new to rooting/flashing, I would suggest using a stable Rom instead of an experimental one - at least until you get the hang of it.
If you're having trouble flashing ROMs, try switching to Amon Ra recovery (I assume you're using clockwork) and try flashing again. You can do this through ROM Manager (it came with CM7). Just choose "flash alternate recovery".
Before rooting, modifying, and flashing ROMs, you're supposed to have a clear understanding of it all. I suggest reading the stickies in the Evo forums & any guides you can find. Read everything. Seriously.
I have an Evo as well, so if you need anything, I'm here. Just ask. If you need some guidance & handholding, send me a pm & I'll walk you through everything. Just be sure to educate yourself. There's no such thing as knowing too much when it comes to modifying your phone.
EDIT: If the phone gets stuck on the splash screen after flashing a Rom, it's most likely because you didn't wipe properly. Be sure to wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache & dalvik cache.
Thank u kindly
Both of you were helpful I will take my time and read and explore the forums in hopes of understanding clearly yes i am running clockwork is this ananran better? if so how can i use it ?
Beginner here.
I already know the difference between stock ROM/firmware and custom ROM, and why they're called such.
What I don't know is why overwriting the stock ROM with a custom ROM is called flashing, as is with flashing a recovery.
Regarding stock recovery and custom recovery, why is it called recovery? What exactly are we recovering? Also, is the recovery the cellphone equivalent of BIOS?
Thanks guys.
This maybe a bit of a geeky reply from an old timer, sort of along the reasons why we call it "rooting" a phone...
ROM stands for Read Only Memory and the original ones could NOT be written to or could only be written to once (fuse ROMs). Eventually we got EPROMs (Erasible Programmable Read Only Memory) that could be erased with an ultriviolet light and programmer (I still have one of those). Then came the EEPROMs (Electronically Erasible Programmable Read Only Memory) which were the forerunners to the modern flash ROM memory. They could be erased and reprogrammed without removing them from their circuilt. That evolved into the Flash ROMs, typcally NAND ROMs, which can be erased and reprogrammed (flashed) in blocks. So, flashing is simply the term for erasing those blocks of flash ROMs (typically several K at a whack) and programming it with the new data. Why the term "flashing" was chosen for that operation I believe had something to do with the way the NAND or NOR cells worked.
AFA Recovery goes, well, recovery is the inverse of backup. You back something up and, in the case of a disaster, you recover a device (computer, phone, whatever) by restoring that backup. The recovery ROMS have the ability to back up the device and restore (recover) the device. Makes sense.
thanks mhwarfield!
I've done some searching (and googling) and it appears that if I flash an ICS ROM (I'm looking at Existz at this point) I will be able to go back to my Nandroid backup of Rumrunner Gingerbread by flashing that, but I will need to flash a Gingerbread RIL and Radio (if these are the same thing, please excuse me, I'm just a "user" standing on the shoulders of the giants who create these great ROMs). Is this correct? Is there indeed any way of backing up everything, including radio/RIL? I'm thinking there isn't but it's worth asking. Thanks for any advice on this.
Short version, you don't need to worry about the ril and radio. The radio remains the same always unless you decide to change the radio.
The does change with roms but flashing the backup it will automatically restore whichever you had.
The ril for all non sense roms will be the same one. The other rils will not work on a non sense rom.
On sense roms you can play around with the rils to see which one works best with your radio.
However, it is best not to start playing around with those until you get familiarized with flashing roms, back ups, etc.
Edit: before flashing a new rom boot into recovery. After having the rom in your sd card.
Wipe data/factory reset.
Wipe dalvik
Format all partitions (except sd card)
Flash rom
Reboot.
Sent from a dream.
Ril's are always part of the Rom. Aosp always has ril 0018g. Which is compatible with 06.06.30, 09.04.11 and 10.04.03. Rumrunner is compatible with 10.04.03. So I would just stick with 10.04.03 if just using these two roms. If you flash any sense 3 or higher then use whatever matches the ril in Rom. With aosp you don't want to mess with the ril, but sense can be changed. It seems complicated but is really simple, just a lot of numbers. Hit up the radio thread in dev stickies for more details on radios and their matching ril.

Also do a complete backup before going ICS. Then if you need to go back, full wipe and then restore.
