when in keyboard, press 12# (right of space), then 1/2 (left of space).
< and > are available, but not ^.
Depends on what program you are in. I have ^ on page 3/4 in TXT and email. probably others as well.
My mistake, I saw it on 2/2 for TXT messages.
Thank you, I never realized that there was a 1/2 button. now I love my phone even more lol.

I found the typing area (the space below the message body) becoming too small after exchanging a few messages. Wonder if there are ways to enlarge the typing space to allow seeing 3-4 lines (now I can only see 2 lines). Thanks.
This seems to be a problem only when using the threaded SMS feature. I you turn that off, you get the full screen. The other problem with the threaded SMS feature is that it take away the character count which also drives me a bit crazy. Anyone know how to fix either of these two issues while retaining the threading feature?

It doesn't take away character count. It's right there on the top bar, next to the start button...
Drop this in /windows and overwrite. Might need total commander. I cant find the post but basically you edit the thread_sms html file in windows, i have this one saved in both my wife and my phones pre-edited.
note: you need to have show hidden filed turned on to see it on your pc.
you can use the freeware "TOTAL COMMANDER" and edit the file thread_sms.html. You can do a search to easily find it...i think it's in the windows directory.
look for this part:
<inbox:content id="COMPOSESUBECT" width="98%" height=35 spell...
and play around with the number in height (in this case 35). I think I tried 70 and got 3 lines for my text replies. Just change the numbers and see what works for you.
*you need to soft reset after editing the file.
Thanks, venelar & koppee1 for your help! It works.

Hey thanks a lot. I had been looking for it at the bottom of the screen where it appears when a new message is created. You have solved a big issue for me! I can kind of live with the small typing area but the word count thing drove me crazy -- I am a wordy guy.
i have installed wisbar advanced with the original theme. After that i havent the character count which has been in top. Is there any way how to get the character count back in threaded sms, or how to get it to the postion where is in the normal SMS sending... anyone hlep?
Hi, I installed the above thread_sms.html file from venelar (copied using resco explorer and soft reset) but now my threaded sms is broken, if I select a thread and click reply then nothing happens other than a slight screen 'flash'! Have disabled threaded sms in advance config and ordinary messaging is fine. Would like to get threaded back but like an idiot did not make a copy of the original file. Don't really want to hard reset and start all my settings again. Can anybody upload an original touch pro thread_sms.html file to help me out or suggest what I have done wrong?

it worked 4 me without the soft reset!
THNX much better now! now I can actually see what I typed...
After some experimentation:
Height of 35 = One-line SMS typing area
Height of 45 = Two-line SMS typing area
Height of 70 = Three-line SMS typing area
P.S. As per Pensador, a soft-reset was not required.
Doesn't work in Landscape SMS Mode

Changing this seems to only increase the SMS text area for the screen in Portrait. When I use the keyboard (i.e. screen in Landscape). Anyone know how to increase the SMS texting area for both orientations?

This is an awesome fix. This should be placed in the wiki.
Also, you don't need a soft reset and it works for both portrait and landscape.
Is there a way to do this in the registry or so?
Making the message-area bigger in the threaded sms-messaging that is.. because I feel that only three rows is way to little when typing.. tried to raise the bar but it seems hard stuck..
Um? this is limited by your screen size
you can always change the font size to see more...
unless i misunderstood your intention
I think he means that he wants to make the area at the bottom bigger, the area where you type in the message.
afaik you can resize the textbox by editing the "thread_sms.htm" in \Windows\ there is a "height=50" when you change it to 60 you get a bigger textbox
hope that helps

Use Total Commander and search for "thread_sms" and the file will come up. Choose the edit option, and edit away!
very useful... someone's already asked me that before.. i think i'll add it to the guides thread.
sorry, forgot to subscribe to the thread :/ but hope you figured it out
Thank you everyone, I searched and edited the html-file with resco/word at first but it couldn't save the file cuz it said it was used.. then i searched/edited it with total commander and it worked like a charm after a soft reset! Default height was height="35", changed it to 80 = perfect
Cheers

This is my first post so be graceful
I was wondering if there is some cab (prog) which could make an reply button within the Sense sms view. Currently there is only one button which makes a new sms .
Does anybody know if there is something like this ?

Plaspop

Or you can press the right softkey and select reply. There's many way to reply on your sms, but the first one is the most simple a fastest one
I made a custom version of Connectbot that works with the key mappings in the new official CM7. Thanks to mkasick for previous work.
*NOTE*
In order for the keys to work, you must set the 'Directory shortcuts' option in Settings to 'Use left-side keys'
Here are the changes from the Connectbot git tree:;
- Smiley emits grave accent ( ` )
- Sym is now ctrl. Pressing Sym twice emits escape.
- Shift is tab (unchanged)
- Fn once is forward slash ( / )
- Fn + LeftArrow = Home
- Fn + RightArrow = End
- Fn + UpArrow = PageUp
- Fn + DownArrow = PageDown
I've attached the modified .apk as well as a .diff
Please let me know if this works out for you CM7 users.

I love you.

This is awesome. I made my own connectbot apk ages ago for the stock rom and just discovered that the keymappings were different in Cyanogen.
Only thing I notice is fn-N gives a backtick on my phone, instead of @, and I see no way to send an @. I'm using nightly-9 right now. It's been so long since I've built an apk it's going to take me a while to get set up again so I just thought I'd see if it was just me this was happening to.

I'm pretty sure the smiley face button on your epic keyboard is for the @ sign... not running cm7 right now but I'm pretty sure that's what its mapped to....

it's not, that's the actual problem... anyway I mostly wanted to find out if it's something specific to my phone/install/whatever or not. Fwiw I get backtick for both smiley key and FN-N, and FN-smiley gives 0.
SYM works as control as expected, as do all the rest of the FN-letter combos as far as I can tell. Depending of course on what "directory shortcuts" is set to.
from looking at the patches, this one explicitly replaces "@" with "`" which seems to assume there's another way to get "@"... Maybe there is and I haven't figured it out yet.
The basic problem here is that either my particular phone or CM7 on the epic in general doesn't distinguish between Fn-N and the smiley key at the keymap level. I'd like to know if other people also have the problem with this version of connectbot where smiley and Fn-N both send "`" (backtick)
As a quick and gross hack, rather than figuring out the key layout stuff, i made a version that 1) doesn't replace "@" with "`" and 2) lets you generate "`" by typing [email protected] (ie, SYM-SMILEY)
(This is gross because "`" isn't a control character, but it's not the end of the world because [email protected] is traditionally the NULL char, and you can already send that with ctrl-space, so nothing's really lost. )
ps if you want this version for some reason, you're welcome to it, but it would be better if someone who knew what they were doing pointed me in the actual right direction.
Thanks for doing this, but not all key mappings are working for me. Shift is still Shift, not TAB, Fn '/' is not working either. I'm on CM7 nightly 11, using hard keyboard.
Also, if I get Shift working then how do I do a regular Shift?
thx
I edit /system/usr/keylayout/s3c-keypad.kl and alter it so key 42 and 43 are different.
key 42 DPAD_CENTER WAKE_DROPPED
key 43 TAB WAKE_DROPPED

This makes cm7 work fine with the latest epic connectbot, if I remember right.
Good idea... Is there a tool that lets you see the actual keycodes generated as you push buttons? that would be pretty helpful.
Thanks, hazridi! That works perfectly for me. Attached is my patched .kl file which you can just rename (to get rid of the .txt suffix this forum required for the upload) and drop into /system/usr/keylayout.
I just flashed MIUI v4 2.8.3 on my Infuse and was quite happy with it. The only complaint I have is that I can no longer change input method by long pressing the text input block and select from the pop up menu. Instead, when I long hold the text input block, the magnifier is activated. (I have to switch between English input method and Korean input methods quite frequently. With stock ROM, I can just long hold the text input block and select from the pop up menu.) Is there a way that I can disable the magnifier and have the input method selection menu poped up on long hold?
Thanks so much!
taylorlee,
My keyboard is working so I am not able to duplicate the issue. Since you can not post in the development section yet, I will take your post over there- reason being is the OP has 7 builds on 3 devices and he may not see your question here. He is on vacation so give him a day or two to reply if he has an answer. You can check here for that http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1658725 Your question is on page 129. There will be a new build up in a day or two, you may flash it and see if it corrects the problem. Regards.

About the magnifier thing. Its a feature I believe. The way to switch input is when on the text box pull down the notification bar and do it there. Hats where those options are kept now.
