Basically I am looking to buy a PDA or smartphone or something. Hope this is the right place to ask. I will NOT be using it to place calls so carrier does not matter. Only will be used as a hobby device for modding and using WIFI internet on the road when I do not bring my laptop.
I was hoping that prices would be down on PDAs since many people are basically using an all in one phone that takes the place of a PDA.
I am hoping for it to be about $100 or less. I have seen some on eBay that look like they would work. EX: HTC Dash
What I would like it to have is:
Windows Mobile 5 at least, preferably 6.
WIFI-ready
GPS
Java. So I can add java games and apps.
Also, if I get this HTC Dash Tmobile it comes with WinMobile 5 but I have read you can flash a new rom on Dash 3g to 6 or 6.5. Has anyone done it with Dash?
What is the best device with a good community behind it?
Does the type of device I get limit my ability to run certain programs? Like by resolution or if I get a touch screen vs physical keyboard.
Does a Smartphone have any benefit over a PDA besides being able to make calls?
Would a smartphone be locked down by the carrier in the case of the Tmobile phone?
Any help would be appreciated. I am trying to get the most for my money but it is a unique situation since I do not need to make phone calls.
Hi & welcome,
The s620 is a good choice for $100 should be easy to find as in the UK they go for about £100.
Lots of modding can be done Excalibur forum 6.1 & 6.5 available.
Regards carrier they will be locked down unless stated by seller unlocked, in the forum noted STICKY there are 2 x unlocking services available that are cheap and reliable.
The Marketplace has a couple of s620's available.
Smartphones are more limited by software but is still a big choice available
There rock solid devices and work very well for cheap layout.
Hope that helps.
Yes that is very informative.
The Excalibur/Dash is the same phone, just rebranded for TMobile?
Also, if I get a locked phone can I use this in the forums "SDA_ApplicationUnlock.zip" to install WM6.5 Roms and basically any app that will work with an Excalibur? Or would I be better off finding an unlocked phone from the start.
Thanks for the help. I am just getting started with smartphones
Excalibur/Dash same just like you say different names due to carriers.
When i said locked meant as SIM, with regards flashing a new ROM some phones are just very much a plug in and flash and others will need SP_AllowCertificateInstall & SDA_ApplicationUnlock info here
Take a look through the STICKY as will give you an idea of what can be done
Happy to help.
Edit: Forgot to say when looking to purchase make sure the model has Wi-Fi, as there are a few models that don't.
Thanks alot for all the help.
Now I better understand what locking means in regards to the SIM card use.
But for me since I am not going to use the phone part. A locked vs unlocked phone should not affect me either way. Am I right?
^Right, U don't need it for WiFi use only...
Great. I think that is all I need for now until I buy something.
Thanks again
I think a HTC Touch is more of what I would like because it has the touchscreen, so it seems easier to use.
A new problem I have found is that some phones say they have GPS but it is not true GPS with a chip in the phone, but gets location from cell towers.
What is the best way to lookup if a phone has true GPS so I can use it without cell service? Where it gets my location from satellites.
Would looking on the htcwiki tell me what kind of GPS a device has?

Why do you say that because I have not bought anything yet?
Or do you think it is not going to be worth the money for what I want to do?
I really appreciate the help because like I said, I don't really know what I need. Just what I want it to do.
PDAdb is very useful. Shows that the CDMA of touch version of the touch does not have wifi or GPS.

Touch\Elf is a PPC so generally higher price, pretty much same spec as Excalibur but with Touchscreen, will give you more choice on software as the market bigger on PPC, yeah i was just being comparative on the $100 mark not spec
Take a good look around the forum see what kinda device you like and check the specs out on pdadb.net
I'm sorry about all these questions but I am a little confused now about the Titan/Mogul/XV6800 GPS and aGPS.
On the XDADeveloperWIKI says aGPS requires a data connection but..
a GPSOne whitepaper tells that the MSM7500 chip in the xv6800 supports standalone GPS so it would work for me since I would not have any service or coverage.
Also what I understand that I would need to flash a new rom for the GPS to work, but I still don't know if I need a data plan after the flash.

Do you think when you buy a porsche or a ferrari and you can not drive because the wheel fell of or the windshield blew off in the middle of nowhere the factory tells you: oh sorry this a new model, you keep testing it and maybe if we get enough complaints we will fix it. NO!
When you pay top dollar you get a device that works out of the box, period.
HTC is using us as their testers, but makes us pay a 1000$ for it and lose our time perfecting a half-product they placed on the market before it should be released, plus the customer service treats us as idiots and lies directly : oh we got a lot of good feedback...(yeah right like I was going to call them to say how good a device is), or we dont know anything about a gps lag....f*uck you sit in the car a take a drive idiot!!

So, what you're saying is HTC is just like Windows? ;-)
i agree htc brings out to many high tech phones.with a very high price tag.but there are always major bugs.no kinda of exception for a $900 usd phone that all of sudden does't have 3g.
now most us owners lost a good $300 of the price in less than a month because it doesn't support 3g.htc doesn't even say there working on a new radio.
i know apple brings out a new product every 90 days,at least they listen and stay with product updates.

Oh come on. Everyone knows that if you are an early adopter, things never work quite as they ought to. Happens with every major tech release. It shouldn't but it does.
The reality is that the majority of features on the TP work just fine and fortunately thanks to the geniuses on this forum, the GPS lag has been all but eliminated. No doubt at some point (provided we press HTC), a fix will be released.
So when you get your Nokia, you should look forward to a whole different set of problems - no platform is even close to perfect.

This post I really can't agree with, when they released it they never intended it for North American sale, and you knew that when you bought it. Did you read the part in the specs where it said UMTS 900/2100? If you did, you should've said "hey, this doesn't work with 3G on AT&T... I'm not going to buy it." Why don't we blame Toyota for their Corolla not running on diesel? Oh yeah, because it was never meant to.
When I got my N95, the battery life was terrible, it kept running out of memory and i had to use hacks to bypass their silly protection and install unsigned apps. I also had to use nemesis suite to hack the device and change the product code to prevent it from loosing Greek when I used Nokia's updater to upgrade the firmware, which cannot be downgraded and now, newer devices and latest firmwares cannot be hacked yet, so if you do buy one you won't be able to install unsigned apps.
At least with HTCs we have this magnificent community to create custom ROMs and rectify most problems. Just my .2 cents
Hands down...best $1100 I've spent in a long time. I knew going into it that I wouldn't have 3G here in the US. The advantages I have over my T-Mobile Wing (US HTC Phone) is countless. I have minimal glitches, but with all phones that do more than make calls, it is to be expected. I'll be a beta tester anytime for HTC!
i totally agree with the OP,in other hand if the devices were perfect we would not have XDA devs
what 1 must realize in todays competitive markets things get rushed out the door to make a buck ,hence why all devices will be never out of beta stage. there is 2 solutions for the problem; 1- stop buying new devices .2- learn to live with it.
well the thing is that HTC doesent even want to realize that their devices have flaws. And all the flaws are software related. In other words fixable. just look at the TyTn2 and the driver issues there. There still is no fix from HTC. And people here on the forum had to use drivers from the Diamond to fix it. HTC just keeps on making excuses like the HTC Pro was never ment to be a multimedia device when support is confronted with the fact that the TP plays video poorer that the Diamond. I know that the pro istn a multimedia device. But i expect that the hardware that i have paid alot of money for actually does what its supposed to. Why on earth shouldnt it? I love my TP, but HTC should reallt take care of their reputation..

I've been developing software for mobile devices for five years, and worked with hundreds of models of handset from Europe and North America. I'd rate HTC devices as "above average" in terms of quality. Nokia are neither better nor worse. Get the first Nokia models of a new series, you're in for some "fun".
I have a Nokia. The MP3 player causes the phone to reboot randomly. If I cross timezones, then when I get home, some birthdays in the calendar have moved to the wrong day. Sometimes, it suddenly stops working, saying that the "SIM Locked", and I can't make or receive calls until I reboot it. It's Orange branded, so the Nokia firmware update tool won't support it. Other than that, it works a treat...
I could give you a similar list of problems with other Nokia models, or Sony Ericssons, or Motorolas... and I wouldn't even consider a Samsung, NEC or LG.
And I suspect that anyone buying a Ferrari for the reliability will be sorely disappointed.

It seems to me that what's getting under your skin the most is that customer service is saying their aren't serious problems, and that the phone is primarily working as intended.
Well, thats their job. Have you not ever seen a CSC in person at a corporate office? It's a bunch of highschool grads who don't know anything about anything that just talk nice, create a ticket in whatever helpdesk software they are using, and forward it or close it.
Just call in, politely state your problem, and if they get enough calls logged, development takes notice and things get fixed.
I think what you need more than an $1100 phone, is a $20.00 script for Xanax. Best of luck with Nokia though.
Mobile phone manufacturer in 'not everything works properly' shocker.
Our brand new Audi had a digital display that was on the blink from the moment we bought it. And sometimes the front windows would lower themselves 6 inches after you'd locked the car and walked away. Lots of other owners had the same thing. Think Audi fixed it? Fixed any of them? The replacement Porsche (I'm not showing off here by the way) has an lumpy idle, unreliable horn and the steering pulls harshly to the left. Fixes from Porsche? As if.
In common with a previous poster, my experience with Nokias was far more frustrating than with HTC. And if you want diabolical, allow me a few hours to relate my experience of being the fairly happy owner of a Sony Ericsson P800 even happier with the P900 and then to be floored by the abomination that was the P910. Never never again.
Yes mobile phone manufacturers are guilty of getting things wrong, but in that knowlege, I'm just happy I own an HTC and know about this forum.

Amen to that brother. While I may not own the Touch Pro, Fuze, or whatever the hell you feel like calling it, I know for me personally, HTC has put out some of the best phones I've ever used. I remember way back when, I was in love the Moto Razr (ew, I know) but then I laid eyes on the good ol' boy that was the Cingular 8125 aka the Wizard. I've been hooked on HTC ever since. Lets face it, if you try to go back to a cheesy ass LG or Samsung phone, you're going to be disappointed as all hell. They just don't compare to the customizable nature of the WinMo HTC devices. Granted pretty much all of HTC phones have had (and still have) their share of issues, but lets get real here, they are simply the ****. I've had my 8525 since its release and there's no way I'd switch to the X1 for example. SE?? Would you rather have a WinMo rookie in SE or the season veteran that is HTC? I don't know about you guys, but I like experience.

Put this in my sig, legendary. haha
Hopefully when Microsoft gets off their lazy asses and overhauls the OS, it will be easier for the manufactures to make a reliable device.
I have an HTC Wizard 8125 and really like it. If I could easily upgrade from the WM 5 and control the font size when texting (reading and writing) and other screens, I would keep it. Will any of the phones out now do these things? This is not a work phone and I'm not a game player if that helps. Just a lot of email, internet and texting. Any suggestions for my next phone?
The best hardware keyboard device on this days is Rhodium
Definitely a great device for what you need
That's kinda pricey. anything in the $200 range?
Raphael/Touch Pro/Fuze on eBay.
I bought 2 Brand new ones off eBay for only $350 ($175 Each). Had to unlock them myself, but that wasn't a big deal.
They aren't TOO expensive. You might find a few cheap ones.

maybe get a kaiser they are pretty cheap.
HTC Universal.
fuzes are horrible phones, i'd rather use a wallaby.
i have a kaiser, it's more functional in android than it is in WM.
i'd say go with a uni or athena. athena would be fun.
on second thought i should add more details.
640x480 vs 320x240
3.6" screen vs 2.8"
wifi/bluetooth/fullsized SDHC and 520mhz vs 200mhz.
I really love my uni. to the point of breaking one and buying another, despite having..a large amount of backup phones. the os runs in 320x240 so it's..better for fingertyping+large text.

in my experiance, they are. but hey i'd still be using wm2003 so what could i know right =D
wizard was my second. until its screen met with the hard wood floor of sonystyle.
also, uni has a 3.5 stereo jack. which is quite handy comapred to a 2.5/extusb on newer phones.
For a keyboard device you should consider & try the Rhodium!
So after looking at these, I have to admit I really like the Rhodium. I see one on ebay for $357. But it is TMobile and I am on Cincinnati Bell. Is it easy to unlock? I had to unlock my Wizard as it was from Cingular. The ad says that the 3g will only work on TMobile. Think that is true? or can that be hacked? Is that the right term?
if its unlocked you can use it personaly i have a wizard (3g) running WM6.5 and if you do its text and email and that stuff theres not much point in upgradeing unless you want to start doing more stuff

You can get the phone sim-unlocked for $10-15 through various online services, and then you can use it on CB just fine, they share the same 3G frequencies as T-Mobile. The ad just said "T-Mo only" because you can't use AT&T's 3G bands with it (you'd need the Tilt2 version of the Rhodium). So, just make sure the ones you're looking at online are the T-Mobile version, which are pretty easy to spot
I started off with Cingular 8125 too, and would still be using it if I hadn't lost it this past fall I went straight for the Tmo TP2, and have been extremely pleased with it.
Now, having said all that...before you spend any money I'd be sure to take some time searching the Wizard boards here to see if there's any way to do what you're looking for...I know at the very least that text size in SMS can be altered by using 3rd-party SMS clients. And, I know it's possible to get a WM 6.1 ROM onto the wizard, which might open up more options for you as well.
Hi, new to HTC phones, been an apple fanboy, but now I'm trying out different phones. I've been eyeing this one, HTC Fuze of late, cause mainly, I don't have a data plan and don't plan on too either. I want to know what owners think about this phone, and I can decide from there.
I mean many youtube comments of reviews over this phone been on both sides, and I mean the phone has been discontinued and people say from all the bugs and problems.
Sway me people on the XDA forums! Are you happy with the choice of this phone and recommend it? Or pull me out of its death trap.
Please comment cause it would really help. Thank you.
Fuze is a pretty good cell phone. It's vga lcd is impressing!!!
I use mine daily for work & leisure with a TAEL ROM, works fine for me I like it.
If you can live without a keyboard it may be worth looking at the Diamond 2.
These devices are good but you do need to more technically capable to get the most from them.
Will be sticking to mine for a while as minimal button & no d-pad devices are ****e in the real world, I have yet to see anyone who can type as fast & error free on a touch keyboard.
I've had my fuze since it came out and i love it. I usually run the latest energy rom on mine though and I didn't like the phone near as much without it. So my advice is if you have a little computer know-how and are willing to read the forums the hardware is just fine and everything is here to make the fuze exactly what you want it to be, well aside from the 1Ghz speed and wvga res of the new gen of phones I'd say go for it
Oh and I second the look at the diamond 2 if you don't need hardware keys cause it has a better blue tooth stack, but no keyboard means I won't buy personally
.

for around 100 bucks its a really solid phone assuming you only need english load up the latest http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=536751 energy rom(id suggust cookie 23xxx builds) and all those problems disappear (except camera, still as in reviews)
once you put the new roms on it you would think it was released in late 2009
So does any one know what are the best roms and changes?
it all depends on which phone did you previously used...if you have used low level phone..then definately you will like this......i love this phone.....especially when using energy roms.....as previously i had htc opal.....
I had the HTC Fuze and the problem with these phone with a keyboard is that it will eventually break over time. The phone was also thick and heavy. Oh yeah, the D-pad was practically unusable. I dont know if the Touch Pro shares the same problem as the Fuze. Anyways the main thing that got me to sell the phone was the keyboard breaking.
the board will break????
I just bought a Motorola Atrix and a HTC Freestyle. The Freestyle was only
$20 on Amazon and didn't require a data plan so I figured why not? Free phone basically. I was just curious as to why it's not a smartphone? I mean, I know it runs BREW, but what functions are lacking that kick it out of smartphone territory? At first I thought it might be the lack of wifi, but the original Palm Pixi wasn't released with wifi and it was still considered a smartphone. Then, I thought maybe because of the lack of an app store, but the original iPhone and all of WM 6.1 lacked app stores. So then, I thought maybe the hardware was the problem, but it has hardware comparable to the low end Android devices of last year... It's a great phone for the price. Excellent build quality and great looking as well. Just a little curious about why isn't it a smartphone!?
as you said maybe ths hardware is the reason?
chipset or something else ?it cant be totally same as some low end ANDR devices
if that you can even just cover ROM to get an ANDR device by only $20?
maybe dismounting the phone will takes you the reason
PS:HTC phones sold such cheap in your country?god damn....i haven't get any cheap HTC phone without data plan like that or even close to.....and it is said Freestyle will be sold $99.99 with a 2year plan by AT&T!
The wifi isn't what determines a phone to be a smartphone, or a feature phone. The Freestyle runs Brew, which Brew is mainly used for feature phones. It doesn't need any type of data.

I have used BREW before, and it's 100x better on the Freestyle. Everything runs so smooth, and HTC Sense makes Brew 10000x better looking. To give you an idea of how it would look without sense, take a look at the LG EnV 2.....
I was considering selling the phone, since I honestly don't need two phones and making a profit. But, I can't find any for sale on ebay to base a price off of and sell there. There's also no cases (not even the cheap chinese stuff) either or any accessories and it came out 3 days after the Inspire did.

Don t worry about smartphone or not, is a good mobile phone or not? That is the most important
This is capable of android os
I talked to a HTC customer rep and he told me that this phone had the hardware capable to run android os (with the exception of wifi not existing). I simply don't know what version to install on this. Has anyone tried this? I am tired of seeing posts where people say it is not capable of running droid os.
I'd just be happy and milk it for all its worth.
This phone is amazing. Very surprised by the poor sales of WP7? I mean why wouldn't anyone want it! Previous iOS and Android user. Love WP7... Don't think ill go back... Maybe EVO 3D just to stay on top of tech untill newer WP7 Sprint phone
I agree, Love WP7 despite the lack of Mango. I guess it's a multiple reason situation. Recent report of sales reps steering customers away from the OS. Users that can't live without tethering. Others who are addicted to customising WinMo who have transitioned to Android. Maybe some don't like the size, weight, keyboard. Doesn't help either that on Sprint we only have one choice so far. I like it so far that I am willing to wait it all out.
I like the phone too. However WP7 is just not functional enough for me. To be honest I bought the hardware only and I am trying to figure out a way to change the OS. I need a vpn client with certificate support, full exchange support and good JAVA. Unfortunately this device supports nothing out of the box. No VPN, no Exchange sync via wifi ... Just that the JAVA is native, but I do not need it as I cannot connect to my corp system without VPN.
Further music and videos are pain in the ars as the most common formats are not supported.
Please review my questions in the Android on HTC arrive thread in this section if you have some extensive knowledge and if you are willing to help me run something different on this device.
No idea, friend. I had to forgo 4G to get this phone but WP7 was so compelling that there are now 2 gleeful Arrive users in my household. We love these things to pieces and Mango is going to make them even more excellent. I can seriously say that MS has knocked it out of the park with this one and I stand behind the platform all the way.

Sorry drelisimo, but I think that you are mistaken. WP7 certainly does support exchange sync over Wifi. I have done it on 4 different WP7 devices MANY times.
I agree that java and VPN are another matter, but then if you had done your homework before buying the device, you wouldn't have had any nasty suprises.
As I said I bought hardware with the idea to tackle the OS later somehow. I did my homework and I am not surprized.
Anyway, would you please tell me how did you sync your exchange over wifi? It always tells me that I need my data connections to be turned on.
Thanks.
as stated, probably the largest reason Windows Phone 7 sales are so slow is because sales representatives aren't pushing the products.
an example article found here --> You Can't Buy A Windows Phone If They Won't Sell You One.

currently, there is a sales offer where i can get the 7 Pro for half the price, is it worth?

The only 2 things its missing is tethering and downloading files straight to the phone.
If I had these two features there would be no doubt that this phone was huge upgrade from the tp1
Hopefully we'll get tethering figured out in the next few weeks and hopefully someone smarter than me is working on a way to download files to the phone
(did that all the time with mp3s on my tp1)

I would say that the two biggest gaps are tethering and 3G-only. That being said, I love the device so much that I easily overlook those features.
I actually am fine with 3g. Almost everywhere I go has wifi. 4g kills battery life. 3g is pretty fast for most everything I do.
Mango will address every complaint I have, but until then, I am still a very happy camper.
I have not received the info, but after further research I just understood that I am asking stupid things.
Otherwise ... the phone is maybe the best piece of mobile hardware I have ever acquired.
Cheers.
