Did the installation go well? Does it work with the HD2 without issues? Is it more finger friendly?
Just installed it, seems very good and much easier to use with fingers than Resco. However, Resco is still my prefered explorer because it's a lot faster (it opens the Windows folder in less than 3 seconds while ThrottleExplorer takes about 20-30) and it can copy and paste shortcuts. If that can be done in Throttle I couldn't work out how.

hi,
please advise if i am wrong with my thoughts.
i think it is useless and a waste of performance to use LNK files (at least the ms ones).
lets have a look at the calendar.lnk:
if you want to launch the calendar app, you are launching first the calendar.lnk. the lnk file points to a registry setting (mscalendar). so the launcher (or systemhandler or whatever) needs to lookup there to findout what the programm-name and the required parameters are (in this case "poutlook.exe calendar". now after a while of doing nothing effectively the system finally begins to execute poutlook.exe calendar...
so whats the point of using lnk files?
i see so many launchers, programms even tweak utilities which make use of lnk files.
e.g. if you change one of your softkeys with a tweak utility to "phone", it does the same useless thing: it points to a link file instead directly to cprog.exe.
hopefully i am totally wrong but then please give me some advise.
thx
lnk is shortcut files
same as in windows
in windows if you want to start your program from the desktop
and dont want to copy the tons of files the exe file needs to start
to the desktop too you have a shortcut to the exe file
Some more on the subject:
The use of lnk files does not slow down the loading, in fact it can make it much more officiant.
Take Skype for example: it has a large executable (several MB). If you were to place that exe under "programs" to launch it it will take the system several seconds (quite noticeable period of time) just to find the icon inside the exe so even if you were just scrolling through your programs the device would appear to hang while the icon was loading.
A solution to that (which now became official part of the program installation) was to keep the icon in smaller exe (a resource dll or just plain ico file can also be used) and the lnk will "state" that the icon is not in the main exe.
Another use of the lnk files is the one you mentioned your self:
poutlook.exe calendar
Without lnk files you would be forced to type any parameters manually every time just like in the good old dos days.
By the way, the process you described, lnk-registry-exe does not take that long on current devices.
Just try launching a given exe directly and check if you notice any difference in lag.
If anything, it is the certificate check combined with relatively slow read speeds of flash memory that make WM 5 and 6 devices look sluggish.
levenum,
thanks a lot for your time and explanation.
sure, i was aware that lnk files help you to launch more easily programs with longer command strings when you use the default launcher.
but how about a different launcher (e.g. rltoday), where you setup once your config within that launcher. would you really point to the calendar.lnk file (which points to registry, which points to an exe file) instead of typing "poutlook.exe -calendar" directly into the launching path within rltoday?
anyway, if you say that there is no time lag, the discussion is more or less of "academical nature".
thanks
oliver
I am not familiar with rltoday, but it all comes down to how the programmer implemented the launcher.
There are two different commands, CreateProcess designed specifically to launch executable files and for that purpose only.
SellExecuteEx that acts exactly like a click in file explorer. The writer of the launcher has the option of which to use and I suspect they often use the second command.
The reason is simple: they want to give the user as much options as possible. If you want to bother and look up the exe and its command line, good for you, go for it. But what if you are a regular user who just wants to get that stupid icon on his today screen?
He wouldn't know or care about lnk->registry->exe. He just knows to look under windows\start menu\programs for something familiar.
Also having to interpret input of different types may be extra work so some launcher creators may want to only allow lnk and let the system understand and run their content.
That way they do not need to implement options for different icons, command line parameters and control panel applets.
I was not sure where to post this. I was going to put it in the Development and hacking but since i am not a programmer nor do i know anything about writing apps so i figured i would post it here. I've tried searching for one of these but have come up empty. What i am looking for is a file/folder explorer that is more finger friendly because i find it hard to use the built in windows explorer or total commander with my fingers(and i'm sure i'm not the only one) and i hate having to reach for the stylus just to browse for files.(call me picky) it would be nice to see a finger friendly that would have the functionality of total commander or rosco explorer(being able to brows/edit reg). I'm not sure if anyone has any interest in developing this but i think it would be enjoyed by everyone. I had thought of making the background for it using Mortscript, but i'm new to using this and am not really sure how well it would work, and then have someone make a graphic interface to go on top of it.(probably not really possible) anyways i would like to hear feedback and maybe input from developers if any find this idea worth working on.
Thank you for your time.

File explorer
Have you looked at things like GS Finder or Resco explorer?
I know there not exactly 100% finger friendly, but if you change the settings so that the icons appear larger, and combined with finger scrolling this saves the need to get out the stylus.
Works for basic file operation, let me know what you think.
um i think its called TouchFlo, but it may be called something else now...but it will give you sliding of your files and all other apps including your contacts. and nothing will be changed, its your default file explorer, but you can scroll through the lists. it works pretty well, so check it out!
this is what I had in mind. When you get your phone/pda, say Mogul, out of the box, click Start -> Programs. The program icons are arranged in a dialpad formation. Well, I changed to quickmenu and everything is put in a list, which is alright, not a major boo-hoo, but for some folders I do like the "dialpad" kinda of presentation. I've not been able to figure out if quickmenu can be changed. Uh, also, well, the programs you list put things in lists also. OH, yeah, the other thing, shoot I forgot again... oh yeah, the ability to change the order of the filename/icon. It only allows alphabetical listings. I would like the custom arrange the files, particularly on the Start menu. Like the original poster, I am not sure how to search for it exactly, but fortunately came across this thread.
Finger Friendly File Explorer: Total Commander
Howdy all,
Start using Total Commander (freeware data manager (and more)) and make the following settings in the menu; Show - Large Icons
Done, have fun!

On my Fuze, when selecting to see the Windows sub-directory, it takes FOREVER to display. Even if you shutdown File Explorer or reboot and restart File Explorer it just picks up working to try to display the Windows subdirectory. I also tried Resco Explorer to see if it might be the File Explorer program. I received similar results.
Any ideas? Could there be something unique about this sub directory or maybe something with the File System?
It has A LOT of files to load. that's why. It takes long for me also. A little faster on Total Commander though.
get advanced config and do the fatfs cache tweaks - my windows dir contains 4436 files/folders - after tweaking it takes file explorer around 4 seconds to enumerate the directory. total commander takes around 5 seconds (but that was ordering by date, not name)
I have noticed that it is greatly affected if you install all of your apps to the device. I did a hard reset just to check this, and it loaded in about 3 seconds while completely default. With several apps installed it now takes about 10 seconds. Pain in the butt if you left it in windows and it opens the windows directory when you start file explorer.
How much does the advance config tweak help? Also are there any adverse affects by doing the tweak?
I already have all of the fatfs tweaks applied thru the Advanced Configuration utility. It seesI have installed a lot of stuff that just goes into the Windows sub-directory. I'm now trying tofind out which of these files are extraneous and will get rid of them.
Thanks for all of the suggestions! If there are any more I will certainly try them.
Load up one of the latest leaked ROMs (either the AT&T one or the WWE one), or a cooked ROM based on that and you'll see HUGE improvements.
One thing that seems to affect it though is installing a different version of Manilla (especially a CFC one with HD contacts).

This issue can be fixed if you can manage to set attributes to hidden on the files you add into your sys and oem. I have done this on HERMES and our windows directory loads on all 6.1 roms in less than a second

would i have to do this when building the rom? Or can I change the attributes of sys files, say using total commander or the like?

Sorry for my lagg there umm you will need to hide modules in sys and oem before cooking rom.. it works great on the 6.1 builds we have made
It depends on what programs you have installed. I installed a .cab that replaces your TF3D theme to the original one w/a flip clock. After words it took almost an entire minute to load up my windows directory.
well..considering some of the tf3d themes have 1000 or so files, that might have something to do with it.

yep. thats why it's sweet when it's cooked in and set files to hidden as your rom will run soo fast
I've buggedup my explorer. A week or two ago i was installing a bunch of programs and everything seemed to be working fine, and then one day i was doing something and went to the windows directory, and explorer just simply bugged up, it only showed the hourglass icon (ok, it's not an hourglass but i don't know what exactly that icon is), and now everytime i start explorer it shows the same thing.
what can i do to fix tis? i'd like to be able to browse through win directory, or atleast to browse other dirs, i can use TC for win directory.
there are many threads about this, so next time try searching for a bit
anyway:
I got this problem when i was using a really slow rom a while back
i just had to leave it for ages and ages and ages and eventually it works itself out. Then you can go to other folders, but if going into the windows folder does this to your device, i wouldnt advise going to it again.
its boring waiting for it to respond but i hope it helps
now now cris
Try using total comander although that can be just as slow. But using file exp, ensure the view is on file name, not type. Displaying view as file type takes 10 times longer as it has to re-organise all the files, viewing by name you will see a MASSIVE difference in speed.
I have searched quite thoroughly, both on this forum and wider, for a solution to this. I may be being thick, but...
When I've installed (to either the device or the SD card ) Resco Explorer I get "this is not a valid pocket pc application" when I try to run it. I've tried running it from the start menu shortcut and from the application icon in Program Files.
Would really appreciate help with this as I am unable to do any of the nice HKLM tweaks out there without Resco Explorer.

Sounds like you may have downloaded an incorrect version. Can you give us a link to where you got it from?
Well its not exactly an official source, if you see what I mean. I dont mind paying for the application, if it proves to be useful and easy for me to use. Until then I guess Im a bit stuck then.
Ive tried .cab of the 2010 beta and the 2008 "rescoexploreren_p.exe" app, installed via the PC.
You can download a free trial of Resco, but I'd recommend Total Commander. It's not as finger friendly as Resco, but it's certainly more wallet friendly (as in, it's free )
You can Google it or find it on here.
on my leo, resco file explorer 2010 runs without a problem. so i think it's because of your 'source' why it's not running on your device.
try the official demo or search for better "source". but first be sure not having downloaded a virus (actually infecting your pc)
On my HD2 Resco Explorer 2008 running without any problem, downloaded from resco.net and installed via pc.
