Just curious whether you folks at XDA will be adding a forum/subforum for the Droid?
im just guessing this wont happen. this site modify phones by htc only.
yeah, like the HTC Palm Treo and the HTC Sony Ericcson X1, like he said

Actually, pretty sure HTC did manufacture the Xperia. The Treo on the other hand...
Anyway, I think it would be a shame to miss out on the Droid rush. It's going to be the biggest Android phone this year (if not longer) and will probably spawn a whole new wave of development.
HTC did manufacture the X1 and the Treo.
Historically, XDA-Developers has been HTC only. This is really crappy because there are other devices out there that could benefit this community if the forum sections were created. The Motorola Droid is one of them.
I'd love to see that happen
Since I just picked one up.

That's probably covered under the Hero subforum, since it's basically another CDMA HTC Hero.

I'm going to be really upset if my favorite XDA devs won't be working on the Droid platform.. I LOVE it and it's the first handset that can handle those crazy ROMs.
HTC Hero UI on Droid?
I just got a Moto Droid the other day over the Eris due to its keyboard and hardware specs...
BUT, the Eris has a much nicer UI (Home Screen, Contacts, Widgets etc) thanks to HTC (as usual)
Because both the devices are Android (however different versions from what I understand), is it possible to get the Widgets and Home screen from the Eris on the Droid??
I am obviously new to Android and have typically been a Windows Mobile user (Used the HTC TouchFlo on the Omnia and what not), and would really like to continue to use HTC's UI's on my Droid.
Do you think this is possible, and if so perhaps this particular topic could be a forum dedicated to it on XDA

The hero widgets are highly coupled with the framework of the device. Therfore if you wanted to run them they just simply wont work. There is a 3rd party alternative called beautiful widgets for $0.99 cents of the android market.
I have also picked up a Droid and want to see it here, until the Leo comes out this is the Android phone to have.
Ditto! Ditto! Ditto!
Agreed, lets hack this phone wide open even if it's not htc!
many unique problems for this platform, especially if you really want SenseUI.
Me personally, I'd rather see a Cyanogen build...but we need root first and foremost...and a good recovery img.
Screen capture of Droid Bootloader is here.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/cizake/4087662259/
We are not that far, with the help of XDA team we could get there so fast.
Just so you all know... Alldroid.org supports the Droid... we're also getting clues on how to root it!!!
PLEASE
I would really like to see a Droid/ any other andorid phone sub forum. this site has the most expansive wealth of information and i feel that having XDA as a resource for Droid users would greatly advance the android platform.
TO XDA: i know you folks only do HTC phones but please, listen to the community so other members can help us out. just so you know all other fourms related to the DROID are disasters!! help we the droid users!
i second this request!
Yes please. Expand your views. It's not only HTC thats interesting
Hi all,
Sorry if this has been answered before!
Does anyone know if its possible to install an Android rom on the HTC HD2? That phone with android would be amaazing.
Thanks!
Not without a whole lot of work.
It is definitely a waste of that hardware to put wincrap on it.
The one reason I would NOT contribute to running android on that device is that every one of those devices that HTC sells, some amount of your $$ gets sent to microshaft, so strictly from the perspective of "I absolutely will NEVER give ONE THIN DIME to those greedy evil bastards", I would ignore the hardware and not do anything that could potentially boost its sales.
Always possible with XDA Dev...see this active thread in the Leo section:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=578575
Thanks for the responses...
Yeah I would love to see Android 2.0 on a Snapdragon processor. I too have a distaste for contributing to MS by purchasing an HD2, but it would be worth it
I get the feeling the recently confirmed "Google Phone" will infact be a modification of the HD2. The thing is, it's so fricken perfect in terms of form factor, I hope they don't make it worse in an attempt to make it distinguishable different from the original
Fingers crossed. And thanks, Ill check out that link.

So do you own an HTC HD2 or not? If as you say you shouldn't have one, and how you would know if Android is not easy to install on HD2?
You can hate MS as we all do, but don't bad mouth a great piece of hardware, which maybe great if it runs Android.
wouldnt it easier to buy the nexus one ?
specs are close enough ....
maybe the release of this will make a port easier
http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2010/01/26/htc-supersonic-htc-a9292-render-and-live-picture/
I too, would like to see an android release on the HTC HD2... I really expected more from winmo 6.5
i hope there will be a port for winmo6.5 on hd2
We're all waiting for this mate.
Better be aware of who you support

You complain about MS but think that Google is better? Really! You might want to check into the politics and beliefs of the Google CEO Eric Schmidt. In one of his most recent interviews he stated that he saw nothing wrong with controlling the news available to users via it's home page and search engine. Funnier yet is that they complain about China's censorship, I guess he beliefs censorship is ok as long as he is the censor.
Anyway, didn't mean for this to become a rant, but Google is no better than MS when it comes to attempting to control a market. Windows & Palm were first on the scene with smart phones and both of their operating systems have grown tremendously. I would even say that Apples iPhone OS would not be as intuitive today if it were not for MS and Palm.
Do you really want to port your own version of Android to HD2? It will never be as smooth and fast compared to say just buying an HTC Supersonic.
Also, what do you do with it when everybody has moved to Android 3.0? You won't have any support for it. The ROM Cook may no longer be interested with porting Android 3.0 to what would have been an old outdated piece of hardware in a year's time.
You're better off just buying an HTC Supersonic. At least you could pray that HTC would give you future Android versions when they become available.
I've played with a Nexus one and a HD2. The hardware is not close in my opinion. The supersonic (Evo) looks great but it's cdma.

I'm sure (or at least hopeful) that a GSM version will be available later. It's a shame to have such an excellent spec hardware not available to the rest of the world.

Really! I've gotten so tired of my Pro2 with WM 6.5, I would buy one in a heartbeat if it was GSM and supported my carrier's 3G. But of course, AT&T has to get the worst Android phones in history in its lineup while forgetting about HTC completely.
If the only thing to edit is the radio rom, shouldn't be such a big deal for all the developers here.
Really looking forward to my HD2 running android!!

I hope you know why At&t doesn't want htc smartphones on their lineup? The reason is because they dont want any htc phones to destroy the iphone. Which is true...sales will drop if a htc 4"3 screen showed up. Not to mention apple is sueing htc.
I just noticed the HTC desire has almost identical specs as the HD2, except for the screen size, most of it is the same, both are gsm....cant they port the android os from the desire on to the HD2..??

You're not disappointed in the way they've tried to lock down other devices in the past? The HTC Legend is a prime example. The devices HTC created were never meant to be rooted and/or modified in the first place; hackers and devs just happen to be skilled enough to do so.
It's just like Microsoft saying "That our phone is uncrackable" and they get word a person that hacked it within a couple days of getting the phone. No product is released with the ability to do everything, that is why skilled hackers / programmers create the rooting / jail breaking software.
Well don't the Motorola Droid line and the Atrix have encrypted bootloaders? AFAIK no one have yet been able to load custom kernels on those phones. Anyway I don't think HTC have gone that far yet(until now??). If that's the case the 2x will be my next phone, especially now that Paul O'Brien seems to be making excellent progress with it.

You listed the reasons why people like HD2, it's development it amazing and the phone is nice to use...And the Sensation or any Android won't be getting WP7, Winmo or any closed source projects. Publicly porting WP7 is illegal and Microsoft or whoever will send the dev a cease & desist letter or email. You are not allowed to port Windows ROMs to non windows phone(Android, iOS,etc).

I have never been so sad about a phone ever.

What is so special about the HD2, is the ability to run so many dif roms/ports. It is a devs dream phone to work with. It is also very easy to flash rom/radios onto. It is so easy even I did it several times with mine, and I am really stup-it when it comes to stuff like that.
The phone has its quirks.. but overall it is a great phone. I had mine for 3 years before I sold it ($350. thats more then I paid for it new BTW) and never had a single problem with it. I would still have it if not for the Sensation.
It really is to bad that wp7 had to ruin the run/development of win op platform. There are so many possibilities still to be developed for it. Take a look at the HD2 forums and it is amazing what they have done and continue to do with that op system.
Ok then how about HTC Wizard? I have mine now...and the battery still keep alive about 4 hours...
Mine is Qtek branded - basically HTC's commercial brand in those times...
Remember that Wizard has started with WM5 and they put even wm6.5 on it...(to not mention wm6.0, and wm6.1). I dont think they managed to run WMP7 on it...
From my oppinion Wizard was a phone that will go in history with glory.
That cute slide keyboard...
Was to bad the absence of an internally GPS but paired with a Nokia LD-3W bluetooth GPS was perfect...

I doubt that any device can top the hd2 in development at this point .. Winmo 6.5/6.5.3, wp7/7.5, ubuntu, android 2.1/2.2/2.3, win95, sense 2.0/2.1/3.0/3.5 and probably when ics source code released it will go on it too .. totally loved that phone

I love my hd2's so much I have 2 as my "backup" phones I probably flash at least twice a week on them. The funny thing is of the 7 phones I've been through this year alone I can happily say the HD2 is the only phone that has never let me down and is still mine and my g/f's "go to" phone whenever our dailies take a crap or am awaiting to get a replacement or between phones....
I realize they are not pulling off some 4,000+ quadrant scores but at the same time none of my other phones have stayed intact or lasted as long as my HD2's have...I'm actually glad HTC provided all the crappy quirks such as sleep of death lcd, hardware button failures, short battery life and most importanly WinMo 6.5 and crappy initial firmwares as it only accelerated development for a means to Android on the HD2 Plus not to mention all the people that unknowingly sold their "bricked" hd2 for dirt cheap(as low as $75 in my neck of the woods on CL).
I hope my answer satisfies the OP.

No clue but if we can figure out how to crack the internals the One XL and Droid DNA will be the devices that we can use for kernels and ROMs to some extent.

Doesn't really work like that... you have to build a hybrid kernel from the ground up with the engineering unit and they specs are totally diffrent on all the devices you listed
Who is this we
Sent from my LG-LS855 using xda app-developers app
We is the developers in this forum.
The 8X is kind of different but kind of not different. The audio subsystem is shared with the Droid DNA, as is the front and rear camera (most likely), and the Evita/One XL shares the same display resolution and same SoC and such, so those two devices will likely provide everything needed for a hybrid kernel that will run Android on this device.
The problem is actually getting the firmware to load that kernel. From what little I understand about the WPx devices, there's a TPM module inside that needs to be side-stepped and the bootloader system is different from the Android variants, which makes life a lot harder.

No offense, just my mind speaking at loud.

because if you wanted a Android device, you should of just gotten one...
Well friends I have read on many forms that if anybody wants android then they should buy android device, & those want windows phone should buy a windows device, BUT LET ME TELL THE NEW SMARTPHONE members,
" its not stupid to ask for dual OS on a newer device, most of us have our PC with dual OS whether win95se & win98se, or windows Me & win XP or vista or XP & win7, and Linux" so it should be promoted at an open resourse like xda forum, rather than asking to buy particular is device, its just matter of interest for experienced developers to work for these multiple OS. On one device,
I can just say a tag from one of our famous xda developers 'BePE' " ITS Our device & we are the one to decide what we wish to run on our purchased devices, we paid a handsome money to buy these devices, &its not Microsoft or apple or google or Nokia or etc to lock up our options just in the name of security and putting so many locks(developer lock, root lock, interop unlock) its a free world
For those who think its absurd I will just say that (HTC magician &ppc2k)
I Have seen happen from early devices, right from k-jam to jasjam to to JasJar(aka universal) to HTC tytn to HTC diamond to HTC topaz to HTC Blackstone & finally to the legendary HTC hd2 every user who believes that user is the person who decides what he wants to run on the device, as they pay a handsome amount to buy the devices
